Even though she is in her home port, it's easy to forget how vulnerable the ship is at this very first part of her voyage. You can see a number of machine guns being manned on the ship along with armed MOD police launches. You can see the black rectangular array of the S1850M radar in full motion, capable of tracking 1000 objects simultaneously including stealth aircraft, drones and ballistic objects in the upper atmosphere. It's interesting to note, unlike it's American counterparts, the QE class is not equipped with Rolling Airframe or Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles for air defense and is completely reliant on the battlegroup for protection. While a formidable and powerful asset in her own right, the facts elude to the sheer amount of support and accompanying vessels she will require for the duration of her voyage. One can truly appreciate the cost and technical requirements to be able to project this type of power at sea and understand why very few nations are able to build and maintain aircraft carriers.
She is underway on her own power, tugs are only there if needed in an emergency and to ensure at slow speed when she’s difficult to manoeuvre and liable to be pushed by the wind, that she can remain safe in the channel and pointing in the right direction. Front tug keeps the line taught n case it needs to pull suddenly, if it did that with a slack rope it risks snapping it. Armchair Admirals, who needs em!
Do a story on how this carrier has lost 2 aircraft while just in training and has never ever been deployed. (It lost an f 35 the other year before one of the multiple breakdowns)

Always amazes me how she always has a clean deck. Not like the Americans who portray their force but aligning their planes on deck when departing and arriving.

U.K. carriers do not have their air group embarked in harbour. The squadrons disembark to their home bases whilst the ship is in the English Channel. With these modern carriers we only have one squadron of F 35's between both the carriers now the numbers being made up by aircraft from the US Marine Corps. The reason for this is largely the safety aspect of avoiding having aircraft taking off and landing over a populated area ( Portsmouth/ Gosport).

Why didn't they fit bow thrusters to these ships be far more manoeuvrable
Most Military Naval Vessels dont have this because it would slow the ship down.. and create additional "noise" in the water..
