HMS Prince of Wales comes home! Largest warship in the UK is fixed 🔧 🇬🇧

- After suffering a major issue with one of the propellers last year, britain's largest warship returns home after repairs. The Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, is one of two in the class homeported at His Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth.
The Royal Navy aircraft carrier was welcomed back to HMNB Portsmouth by family, friends and supporters on Friday, August 4th, following 9 months of repairs in Rosyth, Scotland. The £3 billion ship was en route to the US in August 2022 when it suffered an issue with the propeller on the starboard side, which led to damage to the rudder on the vessel. After repairs and a period of sea trials, the 65k tonne carrier returned ahead of an upcoming deployment in autumn.

The HMS Prince of Wales is designed to embark F-35B Lightning II vertical take off fighter jets, as well as a number of helicopters. Aircraft are typically not on board while in port. Serco provided several tugs to help guide the ship in, while Ministry of Defence Police, working with Hampshire Police, escorted the vessel into Portsmouth Harbour.
As an American, I love seeing England have carrier capability again. Both UK carriers are incredible pieces of engineering and force projection. Whenever a world military crisis unfolds, one of the first questions asked is....."where are the carriers"
Thanks - really love seeing your supreme A/Carriers visiting Portsmouth - about once a year; these are giants of the sea along with a lot of wing on your fight deck, only a fool like China would ever invade Taiwan or N. Korea vs S. Korea and Japan (most likely soon) and get a good spanking in return by might of US Navy + Royal Navy and other Allied Navies in that region.
Uk has more admirals than boats. A farcical navy.
@@dafyddthomas7299 You should not rule out Iran and Lebanese, the Arabs & putin. America is attacking Syria and other places and stopping air attacks on Israel which I agree with Israel for defending there country but the Palestinian loss is a bit much. But they were given time to leave and they backed hamas into power. Unfortunately it’s quite a mess but a nuclear war is just around the corner. England will only need 2 nukes and we have subs that are armed secretly out there somewhere which I’m guessing I’m not sure of. It’s very sad that men can not sit round a table and talk things through rather than annihilating them through wars.
@@MyBelch probably right.
@jeffreycox363 I think the first question is, can I have some clean underwear Dear. I’ve just soiled them.
These beautiful craft were built a mile from my home here in Fife, Scotland, I believe they are built to the same recipe as Irn-Bru, made from girders.
The ships were partially made in Scotland you mean, as for iron brew they changed the recipe. No wonder that’s made in Scotland
Thanks Cobra! Exciting times for HMS Prince of Wales later this year... She's due to sail to the US to conduct further flight trials. The expectation is that this will include further Shipborne Rolling Vertical Landings (SRVL) to broaden the flight envelope - i.e. increased bring-back loads, etc. I also suspect that she will begin Mojave UAS trials as the RN has contracted the lease of an airframe from General Atomics. This could be a really exciting development as the introduction of UAVs to the QEC air group could be a game changer!
A Friday afternoon job that one! Never worked properly since it was built! Here’s hoping for a better future!👍😁
It's not as good as the first one and the Navy knows it! Time to sell it to India! We don't need 2 of these money pits!
@@senianns9522India has its own carriers they dont want this heap gjve it too russia with tug boats .
Nice the HMS prince of wales Return Home. Makes me proud to be British!
That is most likely the only reason it was built.
@@hurri7720 it was built to protect us in the UK and NATO partners. We don’t usually spend billions on a Aircraft carrier to just sit in Portsmouth.
A aircraft carrier, without aircraft, excellent protection, money well spent... Have you tried to see a doctor lately ?
@@andrewcollins8774 Long live the glottal stops? You’ve actually won a disciple!
@@andrewcollins8774Someone is telling porkies I saw photos of wales flooded now shes suppose fixed.
Thanks for that. Portsmouth is such a busy port where there is always something interesting going on. I like the bit where the Kings harbour master was giving that cruiser the hurry up to get out of the way.
Awesome! I love watching all those ribs and other police vessels scurrying about! Can't be too careful in this day and age!
Right on! It is pretty interesting to watch the whole closure process foe the hour it's transitting into the harbour.
Thankyou mate👍
Super vid. Thanks.
Well on wards and upwards for HMS Prince of Wales the journey starts Now good luck 🍀 proud the Royal Navy has two massive aircraft carriers to take on All challenges 🤝🙏🙌
yes, and all I got last year for an NHS pension rise was 89 pence a month.
Two giant carriers and enough aircraft between them to almost fill the hangar deck of HMS Ark Royal. And she was a third of their size.
Great Video as always 👍👍
How about sending a Navy vessel to patrol British Waters, instead of waving one off to USA 🤔🇬🇧
Police in full show off mode that day.
A lovely sight, and now with both of the carriers in port at the same time. It seemed a bit naked as it had no phallanx CIWS fitted yet, but that's probably for its first visit to the US. As they are both in, I'm tempted to do the 3hr trip from the Midlands just to see them close up.
Seen them both & definitely worth a visit
I'm trying to check how long they are both going to be there for now. I guess the Prince of Wales may ne tied up for a bit, but the Queen Elizabeth may deploy if needed. It would be a pointless journey down there if they are not both there. I was down there mid 90's when one of the old carriers was docked (can't remember which one though), and at that time even that carrier looked impressive.
I was in Portsmouth last weekend for a trip and I had no idea before that their home port is there until I spotted them from the tour boat. It was an amazing sight. I got a lot of shots from both. And a nice 5 minute long video. :D BTW that was the first time when I saw an aircraft-carrier in real life. Very close. They are huuuge. :D It wasnt easy to fit one into 1 picture, but the tour boat drove to a further distance so we managed to fit both into one pic. I will never forget that day for sure.. Ohh plus on top of the aircraft-carriers i was able to see the Type 45 Destroyers, the Type 23 Frigates and a lot of other military ships too. Next one on my list is to see a nucelar powered submarine in real life. Hopefully i will be able to one day.
I hope to get down there next week, but i have noticed that the Queen Elizabeth has apparently sailed, so it will only be the Prince of Wales that will still be there, but that will be enough to keep me happy. I went to Portsmouth about 25 years ago, and one of the old, smaller carriers was in at that time, but I can't remember which one it was Back then there was talk about getting these new bigger carriers. It's about time I updated my photo collection i think.@@sulyokpeter3941
Now all we need is the rest of the 148 F-35's that were supposed to be ordered! I believe we have 32 so far, RAF & RN combined.
Actually couple of weeks ago 3 more arrived for the navy. So UK have 35 now. 113 to go. :D
Great! that will really terrify the Chinese! lol.@@sulyokpeter3941
Beautiful, beautiful site sight to see, I was also waiting for all the trolls to come out. U.K. is so lucky to have this at their doorstep I hope it won't take too long to fix. whatever is wrong with it. ALL THE BEST WISHES FOR U.K. FROM N.Z.❤❤ CHEERS 8:11
She all fixed! She's now returned to port following sea trials to demonstrate that the repairs were successful. She will now prepare to sail to the US to conduct further (exciting) flight trials...
I miss our glorious Queent

Fun to watch!
Welcome home!
welcome home xx
Lucky the cops are there to protect a couple of warships hahaha
Two cops with a 18 year old woman driving!
Pretty stupid comment. You’ve clearly failed in life to be so bitter!
If you knew you’d know!
The US Navy ship Cole was badly damaged with loss of life by a boat loaded with explosives. The Queen Mary 2 is normally protected when entering and leaving ports around the world. These are headline grabbing targets.
The Military Police protect Royal Navy vessels 24/7 when they're in port...
Good stuff.
No 'cats and traps' on either vessel significantly limits the air wing that can be flown from their decks.
They knew that but they couldn't use steam catapult and the General Atomics EMALS wasn't really ready for the world then. And worst of all, they ran out of money.
lets hope it can stay out longer next time
The drydock tour continues
This is why we need a third - in case one has issues.
As an American, I’d love for the UK to build another carrier and increase the size of the Royal Navy. Hell, I’d like to see the whole of UK armed forces to increase in size. A stronger UK is a stronger NATO. IMO, the UK should be second only to the US in its place within NATO.
With just america alone, I don't think any other country could come close to the air superiority america has with its like 11 carriers.
What like people invading our country on a daily basis in rubber dinghies in their thousands? There will no doubt be violent criminals amongst them including murderers , but they are most welcome to roam the streets here .
We were a few hundred feet away from the carrier, as she came in. You can see our yacht at 6.49 and few other shots. The white hull with red stripes, with the Navy rib passing closer to the camera. Portsmouth is our home port.
Yesterday's answer to todays' questions. One Kinzhal is all it would take to send this anachronism to Davy Jones' locker. And what exactly is the purpose of this vessel, because it has nothing to do with protecting the shores of this country?
I don`t see what defence measures we have if these ships are attacked while in port, I know we have quick reaction fighter jets but could they be scrambled in time to save them. And what if we have multiple attacks is there enough firepower around to defend us properly, what do you fellow viewers think or know 😁
I’ve heard it goes out on 1st September, does anyone know the time?
Fantastic video.👏🏻👏🏻.
Our Safeguard 😊
The police have more active boats than the navy,as ex RN all very sad.
For now. Very soon we will be able to see the brand new Type 26 frigates and the Type 31 frigates too. Around 2026(According to the navy). HOPEFULLY! Fingers crossed! At least we got the Astute-class submarines. They are one of the best and advanced ones in the world right now. The 1st one in the top 5.
@@sulyokpeter3941😅😅😅😅😅
How long are they in port for? Im due to visit in a couple of weeks...
Has it ever gone without it getting fixed, a white elephant
The lateral asymmetry of this QE class is so pronounced it can't have been easy to design it to be balanced, whatever its loading condition....
Is she bigger than the Queen Elizabeth?
Bloody police on the roads, in the water flashing blue light turn on. Do they get a kick out of it or are just late for their incessant sick leave!
That has to be the most puerile comment I’ve ever seen on YT. Does it make your sad little life feel edgy?
Loved the video! Was that other carrier QEII? Also what was the sailing ship with the cannon? Thanks for all your work
The ship with the cannon is the museum ship HMS Warrior (1860), the first major warship constructed of iron (the French ship Gloire that preceded it was an ironclad, ie wooden clad in iron). It is very worthwhile visiting Warrior if you're ever in Portsmouth - and it's usually far less busy than HMS Victory (Nelson's flagship), where groups of tourists are herded round with little time to explore.
Thank You for all the information. It’s very interesting. I will have to put Portsmouth on my bucket list I’m in the US.
@@loritrainor7052 ...in the UK, surely? 😄 Hope you have a good visit.
Edit: Sorry, I misread what you'd written. But do visit Portsmouth and its historic dockyard - if either or both of the carriers are in you can catch a glimpse of them from there, but it's worth taking a cruise round the outside of the dock on one of the little boats that offer this, and you then get a good look at any warships moored at the quays.
When the time comes, I will remember this. Excellent info.
I’m in NJ and before Memorial Day New York City (intrepid Air & Space Museum) hosts Fleet Week NY, navy ships from the US as well as other countries. Truly an amazing and incredible site to see these carriers as well as other ships come up the Hudson River.
Thank You for the inside tips.
@@loritrainor7052 If you love navies, you will really enjoy Portsmouth! You can visit HMS Victory (Nelson's flag ship), HMS Warrior, The Mary Rose, HMS M33 (WWI minelayer), and HMS Alliance (WWII submarine) as well as go on the harbour tour!! p.s. I've been to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and I loved it!
Супер ястреб океанов ! ! ! !😎😀😋🙂
Fantastic sight 💪🇬🇧 Just waiting for all the troll comments 😅 Fortunately if the drive shaft of your car breaks, it doesn’t need to go into dry dock unlike a 70,000 ton aircraft carrier! God save the King!
Already seen negatives but onwards lol
great place for a swim
I wonder what acts as ballast on the port side to balance the weight of those two islands on tne starboard ?
Must be interesting executing tight curving manouoevres. Wonder if that's why one of the prop shafts gave out prematurely . . Load and torque differences ?
I have said this before but I will say it again. When Winston Churchill was first Lord of the Admiralty in the First World War he wanted the Dominion countries of the Empire to fund their own 'Dreadnought' and be the centre of a Battle Fleet. Similarly today, within the Commonwealth Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, all countries of whom King Charles III is King should fund an aircraft carrier and with destroyers, frigates, and submarines already within their fleets, they would instantly have three mighty Carrier Fleets coupled with our two, we would be invincible to China and Russia. There would then be, by rotation, at least one Carrier Task Force on station in the South China Sea. Coupled with our allies the U.S., who could stand against us? Through Strength is Peace.
Park it in the « English » Channel, to bring more over….what else can the Navy do?
what would happen if the anti radiation wash down was activated when a missile was inbound?
Now with two carriers seaworthy we can protect the the channel from invaders....
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
When a Nimitz-class carrier leaves or enters port, her flight deck is crammed with fighter aircraft as a symbolic warning to potential adversaries to not mess with her or the rest of her fleet.
This ship, and her broken sister, leave and return with conspicuously empty flight decks and a highly superfluous police presence.
This is hardly likely to cause sleepless nights in the Russian or Chinese High Command structures.
Because the Spitfires & Hurricanes are top secret aircraft.
I mean China and Russia don't have many carriers either, with Russia only having one and China having three and that's nothing compared to the 11 american super carriers, yeah UK are behind by a bit, but it would be great if it all worked properly.
@@Spendingryan The Russians and Chinese have the means, with their hypersonic missiles, to sink any capital ship that’s categorised as a risk to their national security.
There’s no defence against them, not a warhead travelling at Mach 10.
I would suggest that carriers are as redundant now as the battleships became during WW2.
@helmethead72 those are dangerous, CIWS can't shoot those down right? What about standard missile, also there is USS Preble which has a laser installed but yeah those ships would be in danger
The Russians beat the nazi's remember
Supreme engineering indeed - two great A/Carriers; wished they had some planes on flight deck when entering / leaving port and in ideal world - wish the Royal Navy be double in size - especially to go against tune of Put skin and menancing China (Taiwan) and Kim Gone Loon (N. Korea vs S. Korea and Japan - extremely likely to attack shortly).
HMS WALL FLOWER
Home port for ship and crew should be Davy Jones locker!
would that throw any missile off or no?
Serco running our port tugs for the military? 😳
What’s the other carrier it goes past it looks identical
HMS Queen Elizabeth, the first in the class of two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.
Until the next problem...she does seem an unlucky ship judging by her short life so far 😢
Any jets yet to arm it with.
Plenty jet skis

these two hulks should go into dock and not reappear until fit for purpose and designers, builders but on notice. up to the Defence Minister "If We Still Have One" its a total and utter disgrace

Too many edits, very disorienting! I'll grab the video somewhere else!
What even is the point of having a military these days? Totally pointless.
The Russians must be Shaking in their Boots when they see this Aircraft Carrier with no Planes. As it is here its nothing more than a Big Metal Lump. Maybe they are waiting for ULEZ to come in so they can buy Planes.
