Good review. One subtle character trait I found wonderful was Rocky was playing with the racquet ball again like he did in the very first movie. When I finally became aware of it, it just hit me like a ton of bricks. No words, no long exposition that the old Rocky is back, or pointing it out heavy handedly like, "See this ball? I used to like to bounce this ball around when I was younger. Adrian liked that about me", or anything stupid like that. When Adonis came into his life, and started pulling him out of his shell, his funk, the ball came out with him, because it's a show of life and vitality, a renewal of the old energy Rocky has always had in him, but went dormant after so much personal tragedy. It made his statement to Adonis at the end about fighting his sickness even stronger, because he showed him how to fight again. That one little detail is filmmaking. That was wonderful, and in my estimation totally beats out all of the metaphor and symbolism Birdman had. Make no mistake. This movie is to Stallone as Birdman is to Keaton, and this movie does it better.
Creed is like a reverse Southpaw but much better. And Michael B Jordan's great performance in this movie shows that he is not a reason that the new Fantastic Four movie didn't do too good.
+s Hill Totally agree! those were all phenomenal young actors, who could have made a brilliant film had they been given a decent director and better story!
+s Hill Hell people even give Toby Kebbell stick for Doom but go ahead and watch him in black mirror, the escape artist or even the 2nd apes movie. He's the real deal! Like MBJ all those guys are talented people who had to work with a terrible, terrible script.
Well technically they did reference Rocky V when Donnie asks Rocky to train him and Rocky says "I don't do that stuff no more." Because he had such a shitty experience from training that bum Tommy Gunn lol
Here's hoping that MB Jordan is just beginning to build a great portfolio of roles. It doesn't seem like Fantastic Four harmed his reputation much, especially because Creed isn't soon after.
Yeah, Clubber Lang egging Rocky on is the best...the whole bit about being a paper champion and making a pass at Adrian. But my favorite bit? Is when Clubber Lang makes a go at Apollo. That exchange was gold.
To be fair, Michael B Jordan has been acting from a young age. He is Wallace from The Wire, and that character really was one of the best tragic Characters in the show imo.
That fight that was one shot, incredible. It was probably edited to look like one shot, but it feels very real because as he takes damage to the eye and face it progresses and your like how did they do make up for that??? It is a great movie!
This movie is great! Hope they keep on with this series I'd love to see more Creed films! I hope it gets as famous as Rocky did. Basically Rocky is the New Mickey and Creed is the new Rocky. This movie is so much better than what you expect.
I didn't know you guys started back up after spill Korey! I'm sorry it took so long but I'm glad to say I'm back with you guys. Hearing your voices together really takes me back. I'm so excited to be watching you all again!
total agreement on this review. I grew up with the Rocky movies so they all ( even 5 ) hold their place, but this was personally my biggest surprise of the year. Def a full price.
Yeah, I've been gushing about this movie ever since I seen it!!! I can't lie, it's borderline Better Than Sex rating for me!!!! I can't really find anything bad to say about it to be honest. Major props on the soundtrack and that awesome ass score by Ludwig Goransson as well.
I love how in the scene where he asked who won, Rocky NEVER answers that question. Not even a hint of who won that fight.....Damn I am going to have to see this film now.
Just came back from seeing Creed. Wasn't expecting it to be horrible, but I am surprised by how damn good it was. I've never seen a Rocky film before, but I will make a point of watching them now. I hope this film gets nominated for an Oscar at least. Doesn't even have to win it, but Stallone and MBJ deserve the recognition.
I finally saw this movie last week, and you know what? it pisses me off that Sylvester Stallone lost the supporting actor award to the stoic emotionless guy from bridge of spies. no seriously, I have never been so pissed off that someone so deserving lost to an actor who's role could have been played by a stuffed animal, and it would have been just as convincing. Sylvester was cheated out of the award
@@joshp5284 I highly doubt that the guy can try grizzlier like his one from Copland or if Tarintino is willing to give him a chance I can see him playing a bad guy
Fruitvale Station reduced to a low budget drama!? Whoa? Fruitvale Station is an amazing movie and so effective emotionally that I couldn't see it more tham once. Ryan Coogler is an amazing talent. I really coild watch Creed many times because it's masterfully shot, the screenplay is really good and as a Rocky fan, I love rhe subtle reference to the original score and the few Rocky-esque moments. I enjoyed your review
Korey's summary of the film is kind of.. off. That's not what the film is about. Nobody says "oh, you're good because you're the son of Creed", they say "Just because you're the son of Creed doesn't mean you're any good". That's an important point of the film. He's fighting FOR his fathers "inheritance". Anyhow, great commentary otherwise.
Watched Creed last night. (loved it) Listening to DT's review right now. Going to see Creed || later today. Already have DT's Creed || review downloaded to my phone. "Today is a good day" -Ice Cube
+Sláine McCool I don't know if a sequel is good or bad for this movie. Personally I feel they should not make a sequel this ended the Rocky franchise perfectly.
It's a tough call to make. Since this is a reboot of Rocky 1, all the same notes still remain to be hit. We still need to see a film where Adonis wins. We still need to see him get married. We still need to see him grapple with being the father Creed wasn't for him. And inevitably we need to see Rocky die. That could be 3 more films right there, or more. So, we'll see. But I think it would be fine if they ended it at Creed.
I like the ending the best. I was glad that he didn’t win not because I didn’t want him too but if he did it would of just killed the whole movie. This made it more realistic. He’s not gonna win his first match great set up for the next movie
Dave C R Stallone said he went to the Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner fight. Wepner (a white dude) lost the fight but he went 15 rounds with Ali and even knocked him down at one point. I think it's Stallone's episode of "In the Actor's Studio" where he talks about it.
Dude that Rocky dialogue about his legacy actually messed me up. Creed seems like it's definitely a good movie, shame it won't be out until 2016 here in Switzerland.
Great is one of the best well written movies I've ever seen along with the Rockies very well written specially of the passing of the torch from Rocky Balboa to create son just an amazing piece of work and I could definitely see Michael b Jordan play the next Superman put them in a Superman costume give him a good script with good storytelling and please take my money cuz I go and pay to see that get over how talented and dedicated Michael b Jordan has to roll and I definitely can't wait to see more Creed movies in the future and to see who he ends up passing the torch to in a few decades
Personally hate the rocky films...... Until Creed and that made me a fan (only the Creed films) of the films and I loved II and cant wait to go watch III!!!
Can't believe you guys liked this so much, let alone the majority of people who have seen it. This was was so formulaic, cheesy and downright disrespectful to boxing with how unrealistic it was. I must have rolled my eyes about 50x while watching this. Give this a rental.
I am 5 years late to the party since I just came across your channel about a month ago (and I love it); but I feel compelled to disagree with your comparison between this and Southpaw. This is Ryan Coogler's 2nd film and while it had potential I felt it was an epic fail. The fight scenes in this film versus Southpaw pale in comparison. Fuqua was an actual golden glove boxer and it shows in the grittiness of his fight sequences whereas Coogler's felt staged and unauthentic. What is lost on most people who ive heard critique Southpaw is that it is that while it IS a film about boxing, the boxing is more of a subplot to the main storyline which is the father-daughter relationship. I "like" Michael B Jordan, but I honestly feel like as an actor he is somewhat one-dimensional. Whereas Jake Gylennhal truly embodied his character in Southpaw. I do agree that the attempted homage to the first Rocky Movie w/Jordan running down the street, while it could have been great, turned out to be cheesy and overdone. My main issue with Creed is the typical white savior complex played through Stallone's character. While I do agree Sylvester is f*ckin phenomenal in this film, it is a throughline that is all too often displayed in hollywood films in general. I appreciate you guys for these reviews, they really help me get through my days, please keep up the EXCELLENT work

Just watched Creed and I have to say as a big Rocky fan this was the poorest of the lot! Also, have you guys never watched Rocky Balboa? By the sounds of this review you haven't.... In Creed the best and most interesting performance was Stallone, he was outstanding. Unlike the original movie the rest of the characters were so uninteresting and I didn't care much for any of them, including Adonis. That's not taking away from the actors as they done the best they could. I totally disagree that this is the best and most human Rocky since the first. Rocky 2 is an incredible sequel and Rocky is as human in that as he is in the original where we see him try and make an honest living, not be able to find a job, provide for his family, he gets married, nearly loses Adrian and becomes a father and all the while realising he has to fight to survive. I really don't think Rocky 5 gets the credit it deserves. Once again Rocky goes back to his roots in that one with Stallone giving another great performance in a more drama based gritty Rocky like the first where he loses everything. We also already had a kid from a broken home who was abused as a child who Rocky trains against his initial apprehensions and he nearly loses his own family in the process! Rocky Balboa is the closest to the original to date, again Stallone puts in his best performance since the original as Rocky only to be topped by his performance in Creed. Everyone knows Rocky Balboa was kinda a rehash of Rocky and I enjoyed that one, a perfect bookend to the series, it was also the most emotional Rocky. But now we see it again with Creed and it's really getting old! With less entertaining and interesting characters and not as emotional as Rocky Balboa where we watch Rocky grieving for the loss of Adrian and we as an audience grieve with him as we've watched that relationship start and grow over the years. The conflict with his son is also very powerful in that movie. As a Rocky fan and a boxing fan I just wish they had of came at it from a different angle for a change. Could have made it a lot more interesting. I was bored through this. I don't think it can touch any of the other Rockys.
Good review. One subtle character trait I found wonderful was Rocky was playing with the racquet ball again like he did in the very first movie. It was the Fox executives that messed up the movie. They cut out scenes and poorly edited the 3rd act without Josh Trank's approval
