I haven’t had the issue yet but what’s your mileage when it started happening and what’s it do just miss second gear or have trouble going into second hitting neutral

Good video! I have a 2002 FZ1 with the second gear problem. It has the same engine and transmission as the Gen1 R1. Hopefully you can post more videos of your repair along with the cost of the parts that you had to replace. I'm interested to see how it came out! Proud to be subscriber #2 :-)

+Tom V (1down5up) its been about 2 months since i rebuilt the transand this is the only thing i filmed, ive been riding almost every day since then. ill put up another video of the bike soon,
as far as big parts go i replaced the left shift fork, fork guide rod, 2nd and 6th gear on the drive axle, all gaskets that i took off (i tried to get metal gaskets cause it'll make it alot easier in the future if they have to be removed), new cir-clips and washers for the gears, any rubber O-rings i came across, and the exhaust gaskets that go in between the headers and the ports.
total was about 450 including gaskets and O-rings i bought twice to be safe,
youll also need new coolant and buy 2 services worth of oil id recommend after first start up and ride to change the oil and filter after about 50 miles or so...thatll be another ~$150 on top
i referenced the manual to see what parts other than the obvious needed to be replaced and what needs lock tite, torque specs ect...
also if you go thru with it put some yamabond on the little breather tube oring that sticks out the bottom of the pump and fits in a hole in the oil pan, its the only place i found a leak, had to drain all oil and remove exhaust and oil pan to fix it...
sorry for the super long text but ill make a vid explaining all this soon, thanks for watching

How did it work once you put it back together? Mine has slipped a few times maybe 6 times and I didn’t stay in it when it happened. I let out asap,so I don’t give it the beans in second gear. I’ll go to maybe 8/9k and shift.
Spoke with a shop in Florida and he fixes the issue and cuts the gears so they hold better than stock.
Was yours doing it bad when you decided to fix the issue and about how many hours did this take?

YAMAHA nie znalazła w skrzyni biegów miejsca na drugi bieg. Tryby zazębiają się o 3 mm. Tak nie wiele trzeba by to naprawić. I drugi bieg nigdy nie wyskoczy gwarancja na całe życie.

it looks like the upper part of the engine is still together. Did you have to take the head and upper crankcase off to get to those gears? Or are all the bolts on the bottom?

No, you can get to both sets of gears just by splitting the cases.

The gears were already slipping when i bought it from the previous owner, my guess is not shifting correctly with the clutch when you rip it from first to second.

i don't know if its a common r1 problem cuz sometimes when i shift from first to second it comes to neutral, but i guess its a rider's fault for not shifting firmly, thanks again

how hard is it to do this??? I need to get it fixed.

If your doing it yourself, the hardest part will be dropping the engine , youll need a mate or a floor jack.

How much can I expect to pay a shop to do it? 2,000 bucks? I can't believe this is a problem in our bikes!! Way to major of a problem ... =/
