What a scandalous story! 😮 The shopping spree videos were some of my favorite from Nintendo Minute, and I had NO idea Krysta was acting! And here I was just enjoying the shopping spree videos; not knowing anything about the utter chaos behind it 😂
I had never seen the episode before and I think you're right Krysta. Even after knowing the story, I can't find clues showing that you had to act. There's no way to prepare for a worst case scenario like that, and it must've felt horrible. I think I would've dropped the video entirely. IMO producing a great video after a blow like that is beyond pro level accomplishment! (and totally understandable if you had to vent and swear to make it through)
So I'll go off in a long comment regarding the entire Splatfest situation we have going one. Yes Kit, there *is* something fishy going on with the matchmaking, but there are *several* things that aren't working properly. First of all, the matchmaking in Splatoon considers several factors: Your level, your performance (match stats Kills to Deaths ratio, turf inked), your weapon freshness (which is a meter that goes up and down as you win using the same weapon, basically indicating you know how to handle a certain weapon and you're good with), how close you are to other players (physically, since the game is p2p, the closer 8 players are together the "better") and also weapon range. Each weapon has a range number asigned and the game tries to even the total sum between teams. Chargers have high range numbers, some shooters have very low range numbers. However, *the game starts making these specifications and limits more broad or "lenient" as the time you've spent in queue goes up, and Splatoon "gives up" rather quickly.* They really want you to be playing the game as soon as possible instead of providing a balanced gaming experience, at least during Splatfest this is specially obvious. There's no queue time that goes over for 90 seconds. Good in theory, really bad in practice. So there's that, to start with. That's why it was so common to get put against people that were above your level, unbalanced weapon range (long range wins over close range no matter how you paint it, specially considering the map design and the current pool of maps and weapons we have in the game at this point in time), and to be facing named teams or pre-made squads. The game *will* put you against anyone who is available for the most part if it means that you won't spend over 2 minutes looking for a game. Which brings me to the next issue. Splatfest Normal and Splatfest Pro. Normal mode allows you to squad up and go in with a full team of friends, which could easily be coordinated via discord or anything else, and those people will still be freely matched against people who decided to play Normal but without any friends. It's in Pro where you *can't* play with friends or a coordinated teams, and allegedly matchmaking should be more balanced: after 5 matches you get asigned a "power" which is a number that goes up and down as you win a lose. This "power" number is used to balance matchmaking in Pro, so if your power is low, you should be paired with and against players that have a power number similar to yours. But it's weird: so really tryhard teams and clans (competitive groups and communities) can go in and play together, be in voice-call and all that fuzz in "Normal", but in "Pro" you basically go solo and rely on pure skill and adaptive-alone-strategy... what's up with that? Next: Team Gear had an overwhelming 60% of the popular vote, which means that you were getting 5 matches against your own team out of 8 matches you tried to play, basically rendering the matches worthless for the most past. Yeah you still gain a bit of experience, but the whole contribution to the Clout count feels non-existent. Why do you face your own team? So you actually have a chance to play *and* so you don't spend much time in queue/looking for a game. Again, the game wants you to play quickly, no loitering around in the lobby. After that, Tricolor Battles were patched *out* of this Splatfest after Nintendo realized that they're a very unbalanced game-mode. In the World Premiere Splatfest the winning % was REALLY low for the team that had to defend, meaning Team Scissors, the team that was leading the Splatfest had no way to "recover" from getting the lead, since Tricolor Battles doomed them to ultimately lose as they were in the hard impossible-to-win-now position. When they (Nintendo) realized this, they sent in a patch to make them happen less often "while they work on fixing them". This is where again "time in queue" enters into play, as the game *already* defaulted you to a regular Turf Wars battle if you spent too much time in queue waiting for a Tricolor Battle lobby to conform (which took a bit more of time since it needed 4 people from one team and then 2 and 2 from the rest). This time around Tricolor Battles basically did not happen, the chance of the game saying "okay we'll give you a battle" and then forming a lobby for it was ridiculously low. Tricolor Battles haven't been fixed yet, and might not be for a while. Splatoon 2 *didn't* have these kind of issues for the most part. In patch 4.0.0 during 2018, Splatoon 2 redesigned the Splatfests, and that's where they introduced Normal and Pro modes, as well as Clout, and x10 and x100 battles. After that, it became a similar experience to what we had this weekend. It has never been this bad however, I've always said that Splatfests are the worst way to properly experience this game: Game modes aren't available, matchmaking is thrown out the window, connection issues are rampant. Also, let's not forget, the game makes and lets you select a region for Splatfests, yet playerbases still aren't closed off to being put in lobbies from other regions: let's not tiptoe around it, we all faced full lobbies of japanese players and let's be clear, no one likes it.

This is because of the FOMO video game gameplay elements in _Splatoon 3,_ but I had no idea that the last Splatfest for _Splatoon 3_ was *_this_* bad in terms of matchmaking - laughing out loud, here!

I haven‘t seen the shopping spree video in question but the whole story behind it sounds very funny! Krysta being angry at Kit using loopholes gives it a lot of personality and makes it relatable, we would’ve never known about that part just by the video alone though
Let Krysta's cat have a place on the podcast! :D I think I would put the gift card toward either Persona 5 Royal or Romancing Saga Minstrel's Song remastered and another smaller indie game like Strange Horticulture or The Darkside Detective. I remember that Nintendo Minute episode and definitely never felt like anything was acted. Immensely frustrating, but you rocked it, Krysta.
"The Morally Corrupt Kit" should be a final boss in some Diablo game! Lol. You can tell Dame Krysta is still seething while recalling that incident. What a fun episode!
Have you considered expanding the Scavenger Hunt series beyond the NSO games? Maybe have a deck of cards with prompts like "Earn a trophy just for completing the tutorial" or "Defeat an enemy in just one hit" and then you'd need to go out and purchase second-hand games (within a budget) that would let you do all those things (kind of like with the shopping spree)? I think it's a really cool format, and I'd like to see it expand.

i have a challenge for krysta while ur cat watches u & kit race each other in mariokart 8 Deluxe DLC wave 2 8 races track while we wait for wave 3 around thanksgiving 2022 the loser between u & kit to the other after 8 races must have to complete the whole bayonetta 3 game blindfolded but the winner of the mariokart 8 deluxe races are ur eyes only while u play it from behind there back around there waist saying like this say if kit wins mariokart 8 deluxe DLC wave 2 8 races krysta u must be blindfolded behind kits back while playing bayonetta 3 the blindfold on one of u must not come off ur eyes till u complete the entire game while the other person is ur eyes while holding krysta's cat if ur cat leaves ur both blindfolded and must complete the game with ur cat as both ur eyes only
For Splatfests, make sure you select Pro because the Open matches you against teams of people, but Pro are all solo queue players. It’s not much better for matchmaking, but it helps a little.
The game that I would buy with the Nintendo eShop card would be "We Are OFK". I was really interested when I watched the first trailer and hearing you guys talk about it in a past podcast episode made me more interested in it! I also love visual stories~

44:51 I played through Star Fox Zero recently and my gosh, that gorilla boss where you have to land on this tiny spot on its butt, within a few seconds, while it can still move around a bit, was one of the most infuriating things I’ve had to do in a game.
1:36:24 SAME!!! My earliest memory is just realizing I’m a person and waking up and playing super Mario sunshine. That was at age 3 and I’m almost 23 in a few months!
It's always interesting to hear all this behind-the-scenes info. I never would've guessed that Krysta's part of the shopping spree video was acted. As for the giveaway, I would probably use the gift card for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, if it was going to be for a new game. Otherwise, I've got a few full-price retail games on my eShop backlog -- that have yet to go on sale -- that I could use it for instead.
I think that the Mario movie is going to have a Mario and Rabbids-like reception. A lot of people are making fun of it and expecting the worst now, but I think it will end up being pretty good! Though it obviously won’t compare to the follow-up Legend of Zelda movie directed by Kit and Krysta 😜

Oh Wow, it’s always rough to deal with a camera not recording 😬 the video still came out great! When it comes to Splatfest matchmaking, at least, if you're playing solo then you probably wanna play Pro a bit more often, since you can only queue for that if you're not teamed up *and* it tries to have everyone have the same weapons for each team. Open mode allows teams to play with/against solo players, and doesn't consider the weapons when making a match. I don't know if there's any method of trying to get people of similar skill levels in the same match, but personally I've had plenty of good ones where we didn't get steamrolled or where we absolutely dominated the other team. There were a few though, and I've heard people had worse luck than that, so maybe it was a roll of the dice, or a question of what players went to which teams.
For me I Would get the DLC of Super Smash Bros Ultimate characters and especially Byleth I am obssesd with her, She is my favorite, I am really a big fan of both of you Kit and Krysta Since Nintendo Minute, and I wish to win as well😊😊.
I mean, of all the amiibo to kiss, Chrom is a pretty good choice. The amiibo won't have bits of orange peel in his teeth. I think I might save the $50 to put towards the digital deluxe of Theatrhythm Final Bar Line!

Aw, so mindful of Mama Yang. Here's to an easy recovery if she's not already better! I definitely still kiss a plush of Chopper from One Piece my friend gifted me one Christmas, right on his hat, speaking of inanimate objects. Overall great episode. For the giveaway, realistically, I'd most likely put that money toward renewing my subscription to the Expansion Pack tier of NSO. For specific games, let's see... excluding what I'd prefer to own physically, which is most of them, I might hit up No More Heroes 2, Shin chan, Omori, Age of Calamity Expansion Pass, or whatever wish list items are on steep sales to get the most out of it-don't know yet.
I would get Bayonetta 3 if I happened to win. Also, 2 things: 1. that was awesome acting, Krysta! 2. you and Kit are so relatable when you "fight". Reminds me of the random stuff my friends and I would argue about. I love it.

@45:06 buying a video card alone in today's market ;) Also buying for PS5, Xbox Series, even Switch can be a $1000 plus purchase considering a launch purchase can easily include console, several games, controllers, etc in a single purchase. With younger gamers there is this push for making a single purchase for say an Xbox Series console then buying Game Pass and not buying any more games after that, not even cheap releases. Obviously they aren't factoring the subscription into their cost, but I've seen quite a few people that buy a console and a membership only.
I would say Ring Fit Adventure to annoy Krysta, but I already have it so Pokemon Violet. Also people coming into work sick (and then spreading it to everyone) was so common before COVID.
Nice stuff as always. If I won the Nintendo™ eShop™ card I would probably use it on another year of the N64™ subscription. I know it's not perfect but I've been getting a lot of mileage out of the service.

Krysta's early memory is frankly a good lesson for all kids. Learn a phone number by heart, and always have it written down somewhere! Don't assume you'll always have your phone and contact list handy.
I would buy Splatoon 3 since the singleplayer campaign looks interesting. Plus, a new update is coming out or already came out, which fixes some connectivity issues, so I think I have a chance at actually playing another competitive game again!

If I won and had some extra eshop money I think I would try Stardew valley. I’ve heard so many amazing things about it and it seems like it would be right up my alley as someone who grew up with the old Harvest Moons, but I can’t really afford to buy many games, or any games realistically speaking. So what few purchases I make I do have to be very deliberate with, in the face of greats like Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild I’ve never been able to give this indie darling a chance.
Yes, matchmaking in Splatoon 3 is atrocious right now. I have no idea what the deal is. I rarely see a close, even match. It's more often than not a complete blow-out on one side or the other. I've also noticed that it doesn't seem to even attempt to put balanced teams together. You'll see a team with 3 rollers and a paintbrush against a team with a good range of weapons. Matchmaking is definitely busted. And between the wonky matchmaking and the constant communication errors (which they supposedly patched, but is still happening way too often to be acceptable), I'm about done with the game, honestly. I can at least say I'm 2 for 2 in the splatfests, teams Rock and Gear. Not sure I'll be participating in future ones, though. The game is more frustrating than fun in its current state.
If I won the e-shop gift card, I would preorder Harvestella. I really like those kinds of games that allow to you slow down and relax with some slice-of-life stuff, but also allow for some action here and there. Fantasy Life on 3DS was one of my favorite games for that reason.
For $50 I’d get a few digital-only games like Shovel Knight Dig, Olija, and Carrion. I prefer physical copies, unless it’s several times more than a digital copy. Would be neat if you could use eShop credit on the My Nintendo Store. Don’t think it’s possible.

Yes! I tried the early access. It's such a charming game, with some Animal Crossing elements. If you enjoy AC, you would almost certainly enjoy Dreamlight Valley. (Do be aware that, because it is still in early access, there are still a few optimization/performance hiccups, but nothing too severe. I have enjoyed it very much, and have already dumped 150 hours into it! Ha! Word of warning, however, if you do get it: Do not time travel, like is common in AC! Make sure your Switch system is set to the correct date and time when you play, or else your resource spawns and season event can become glitched.)
I'm with Krysta on the story time. I have a friend who, like Kit, will try to find all the loopholes in a set of rules, or any exploit, or cheap tactic in a game, and just abuse the heck out of it over and over and over. "Well, the rules don't say I _can't_ x, y or z, so that must mean I'm able to!" It's so irritating. Like, any person reading the rules knows how they were INTENDED, but because a certain word is used, or a comma is missing, or some dumb, insignificant thing like that, "Oop, there's a loophole, it can be interpreted a different way, so it must be okay for me to do it!" Just no! Stop it! Be honest and decent about it instead of trying to worm your way around things for some kind of advantage, or to get away with things you know you shouldn't be allowed to do! Definitely standing beside Krysta on this one. Kit shouldn't have gotten any points for "extra time". Zero. Because he didn't complete the challenge early. He left at least one item on the list that he didn't have an item for, whether it was right or wrong. Until he had an item for each clue, the clock should have continued running. Even if he just grabbed some random thing that ended up being wrong, one item per clue, or the clock doesn't stop.
I also really enjoyed the shopping spree videos; I couldn't tell it was a second take either! My win rate in Splatoon 3 is TERRIBLE and it has me wondering if it's just that I'm below average or if the other players are just jacked. What game would I buy with the gift card? 🤔 I just purchased the Trials of Mana remake and FF9, but I'm trying out the Harvestella demo right now so maybe that when it releases?
I gotta say that this is one of my favorite episodes so far! The storytime in particular was really interesting! 😂 Considering the giveaway, I would use the eShop card to upgrade my NSO subscription. There are already many N64 games I would like to try out and I would love to play the original Mario Party games that are coming to the service soon. With the money that's left I would finance a part of my Sparks of Hope purchase. 😊
With new games coming out I thought it'd be cool for you guys to do a coop playthrough of pokemon. Something I did as a kid and saw some content creators do this thing where after each gym (or whatever the next milestone will be in scarlet violet) you battle each other and see how it goes. That said another rad game I'd love to see played by you 2 is pikmin 3 with the switch coop stuff!

I’m a little jelly of Krysta, having never played the single-player GoldenEye before. I don’t know how it will land tho, as I’m very biased having been there when the game was HOT (and rare, no pun intended) in late 1997. Not only was it exploding with word-of-mouth support, but you simply couldn’t buy it. If a friend had a copy, instantly became popular.

Yeah you still gain a bit of experience, but the whole contribution to the Clout count feels non-existent. Why do you face your own team? So you actually have a chance to play *and* so you don't spend much time in queue/looking for a game. Again, the game wants you to play quickly, no loitering around in the lobby.
After that, Tricolor Battles were patched *out* of this Splatfest after Nintendo realized that they're a very unbalanced game-mode. In the World Premiere Splatfest the winning % was REALLY low for the team that had to defend, meaning Team Scissors, the team that was leading the Splatfest had no way to "recover" from getting the lead, since Tricolor Battles doomed them to ultimately lose as they were in the hard impossible-to-win-now position. When they (Nintendo) realized this, they sent in a patch to make them happen less often "while they work on fixing them". This is where again "time in queue" enters into play, as the game *already* defaulted you to a regular Turf Wars battle if you spent too much time in queue waiting for a Tricolor Battle lobby to conform (which took a bit more of time since it needed 4 people from one team and then 2 and 2 from the rest). This time around Tricolor Battles basically did not happen, the chance of the game saying "okay we'll give you a battle" and then forming a lobby for it was ridiculously low. Tricolor Battles haven't been fixed yet, and might not be for a while.
Splatoon 2 *didn't* have these kind of issues for the most part. In patch 4.0.0 during 2018, Splatoon 2 redesigned the Splatfests, and that's where they introduced Normal and Pro modes, as well as Clout, and x10 and x100 battles. After that, it became a similar experience to what we had this weekend. It has never been this bad however, I've always said that Splatfests are the worst way to properly experience this game: Game modes aren't available, matchmaking is thrown out the window, connection issues are rampant.
Also, let's not forget, the game makes and lets you select a region for Splatfests, yet playerbases still aren't closed off to being put in lobbies from other regions: let's not tiptoe around it, we all faced full lobbies of japanese players and let's be clear, no one likes it.

Have you considered expanding the Scavenger Hunt series beyond the NSO games? Maybe have a deck of cards with prompts like "Earn a trophy just for completing the tutorial" or "Defeat an enemy in just one hit" and then you'd need to go out and purchase second-hand games (within a budget) that would let you do all those things (kind of like with the shopping spree)? I think it's a really cool format, and I'd like to see it expand.

For Splatfests, make sure you select Pro because the Open matches you against teams of people, but Pro are all solo queue players. It’s not much better for matchmaking, but it helps a little.
The game that I would buy with the Nintendo eShop card would be "We Are OFK". I was really interested when I watched the first trailer and hearing you guys talk about it in a past podcast episode made me more interested in it! I also love visual stories~

44:51 I played through Star Fox Zero recently and my gosh, that gorilla boss where you have to land on this tiny spot on its butt, within a few seconds, while it can still move around a bit, was one of the most infuriating things I’ve had to do in a game.

When it comes to Splatfest matchmaking, at least, if you're playing solo then you probably wanna play Pro a bit more often, since you can only queue for that if you're not teamed up *and* it tries to have everyone have the same weapons for each team. Open mode allows teams to play with/against solo players, and doesn't consider the weapons when making a match.
I don't know if there's any method of trying to get people of similar skill levels in the same match, but personally I've had plenty of good ones where we didn't get steamrolled or where we absolutely dominated the other team. There were a few though, and I've heard people had worse luck than that, so maybe it was a roll of the dice, or a question of what players went to which teams.

For the giveaway, realistically, I'd most likely put that money toward renewing my subscription to the Expansion Pack tier of NSO. For specific games, let's see... excluding what I'd prefer to own physically, which is most of them, I might hit up No More Heroes 2, Shin chan, Omori, Age of Calamity Expansion Pass, or whatever wish list items are on steep sales to get the most out of it-don't know yet.
I would get Bayonetta 3 if I happened to win. Also, 2 things: 1. that was awesome acting, Krysta! 2. you and Kit are so relatable when you "fight". Reminds me of the random stuff my friends and I would argue about. I love it.

@45:06 buying a video card alone in today's market ;) Also buying for PS5, Xbox Series, even Switch can be a $1000 plus purchase considering a launch purchase can easily include console, several games, controllers, etc in a single purchase. With younger gamers there is this push for making a single purchase for say an Xbox Series console then buying Game Pass and not buying any more games after that, not even cheap releases. Obviously they aren't factoring the subscription into their cost, but I've seen quite a few people that buy a console and a membership only.
I would say Ring Fit Adventure to annoy Krysta, but I already have it so Pokemon Violet. Also people coming into work sick (and then spreading it to everyone) was so common before COVID.
Nice stuff as always. If I won the Nintendo™ eShop™ card I would probably use it on another year of the N64™ subscription. I know it's not perfect but I've been getting a lot of mileage out of the service.

Krysta's early memory is frankly a good lesson for all kids. Learn a phone number by heart, and always have it written down somewhere! Don't assume you'll always have your phone and contact list handy.
I would buy Splatoon 3 since the singleplayer campaign looks interesting. Plus, a new update is coming out or already came out, which fixes some connectivity issues, so I think I have a chance at actually playing another competitive game again!

If I won and had some extra eshop money I think I would try Stardew valley. I’ve heard so many amazing things about it and it seems like it would be right up my alley as someone who grew up with the old Harvest Moons, but I can’t really afford to buy many games, or any games realistically speaking. So what few purchases I make I do have to be very deliberate with, in the face of greats like Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild I’ve never been able to give this indie darling a chance.

Yes, matchmaking in Splatoon 3 is atrocious right now. I have no idea what the deal is. I rarely see a close, even match. It's more often than not a complete blow-out on one side or the other. I've also noticed that it doesn't seem to even attempt to put balanced teams together. You'll see a team with 3 rollers and a paintbrush against a team with a good range of weapons. Matchmaking is definitely busted. And between the wonky matchmaking and the constant communication errors (which they supposedly patched, but is still happening way too often to be acceptable), I'm about done with the game, honestly.
I can at least say I'm 2 for 2 in the splatfests, teams Rock and Gear. Not sure I'll be participating in future ones, though. The game is more frustrating than fun in its current state.
If I won the e-shop gift card, I would preorder Harvestella. I really like those kinds of games that allow to you slow down and relax with some slice-of-life stuff, but also allow for some action here and there. Fantasy Life on 3DS was one of my favorite games for that reason.
For $50 I’d get a few digital-only games like Shovel Knight Dig, Olija, and Carrion. I prefer physical copies, unless it’s several times more than a digital copy. Would be neat if you could use eShop credit on the My Nintendo Store. Don’t think it’s possible.

Yes! I tried the early access. It's such a charming game, with some Animal Crossing elements. If you enjoy AC, you would almost certainly enjoy Dreamlight Valley.
(Do be aware that, because it is still in early access, there are still a few optimization/performance hiccups, but nothing too severe. I have enjoyed it very much, and have already dumped 150 hours into it! Ha! Word of warning, however, if you do get it: Do not time travel, like is common in AC! Make sure your Switch system is set to the correct date and time when you play, or else your resource spawns and season event can become glitched.)

I'm with Krysta on the story time. I have a friend who, like Kit, will try to find all the loopholes in a set of rules, or any exploit, or cheap tactic in a game, and just abuse the heck out of it over and over and over. "Well, the rules don't say I _can't_ x, y or z, so that must mean I'm able to!" It's so irritating. Like, any person reading the rules knows how they were INTENDED, but because a certain word is used, or a comma is missing, or some dumb, insignificant thing like that, "Oop, there's a loophole, it can be interpreted a different way, so it must be okay for me to do it!" Just no! Stop it! Be honest and decent about it instead of trying to worm your way around things for some kind of advantage, or to get away with things you know you shouldn't be allowed to do! Definitely standing beside Krysta on this one.
Kit shouldn't have gotten any points for "extra time". Zero. Because he didn't complete the challenge early. He left at least one item on the list that he didn't have an item for, whether it was right or wrong. Until he had an item for each clue, the clock should have continued running. Even if he just grabbed some random thing that ended up being wrong, one item per clue, or the clock doesn't stop.
I also really enjoyed the shopping spree videos; I couldn't tell it was a second take either!

With new games coming out I thought it'd be cool for you guys to do a coop playthrough of pokemon. Something I did as a kid and saw some content creators do this thing where after each gym (or whatever the next milestone will be in scarlet violet) you battle each other and see how it goes. I don’t know how it will land tho, as I’m very biased having been there when the game was HOT (and rare, no pun intended) in late 1997.
