If you learn the food call you will bring them in from so far away. Crows are by far the smartest bird. I'll give a great example how I know. When a crow finds food all other crows will attempt to steal the food. One time I was eating lunch. An apple for my snack. I pitched the apple core by a tree. A crow came and picked it up. It then flew on the roof of a house across the street. He made no sounds at all. Standing on the gutter of the house he broke the apple core in half. He then stuffed half in some leaves in the gutter and carried the other half to the peak of the roof. Then he started calling. Within 20 seconds about ten crows came blasting in. He started to run with the half apple core and then he intentionally dropped it. The other crows began fighting over it. After one grabbed it they flew away fighting over the core. The first crow waited until he could no longer hear them and walked down the roof to the other half apple core he had hidden and sat quietly by himself self and ate the half he hid undisturbed. Very clever crow are.
I feed the birds that come into my garden. One day, after I'd put out food, I watched a single crow come down and spend several minutes gobbling as much as possible. Only after that did he call the others to alert them about food. It was so funny 😂
Do you have any information about where one could find specific sounds for specific breeds? Specifically trying to find out some hooded crow sounds as they are in the park in my back yard and I'm lazy enough that I bought a whistle so I can call and feed them from my balcony.
@@Riael I have also seen crows eat baby birds out of the nest they'll sit in a tree on the top of a house and when they see the mother coming and going to the nest they will steal the baby birds and eat them right out of the nest And they only figure this out by observing the mother coming and sits on the none the wiser but if they see her coming and going multiple trips then they'll go after the nest

They’re killed to protect crops by most hunters. I raise pecans and they’ll steal my entire crop if I don’t keep them scared to enter my orchard. Even staying after them constantly they still rob me blind. They build up in numbers as pecan season gets into harvest time from the northern crows migrating south. They kill songbird babys, ducklings and chicks. And yes they’re very smart and the hardest animal to hunt IMO.
The crow call is used by hunters to locate turkeys. I'll often copy the crows when I'm (bored) fishing. If they call twice, I'll call twice, etc. A crow once showed me he/she could count up to seven and back. Clever.

Hi guys - very interesting and fun to read. I live near the coastline and have many coastal birds here. I started of feeding Yellow billed Kites ( Hawk) with chicken necks bought at the butchery. Then endangered species arrives like the Wooly Necked Storks. Jeez, they cost me a packet - at one stage 15 of the and they arrive for feed 3 times a day! And they sit for up to 7 necks serving! Then a crow individual arrived. then its mate, now grown to 5 every day! definitively offspring. The storks as well - few of them with broken legs, off foot etc etc. It's become a daily chore now. Feel too bad to leave home fo rmore than two days. But anyway, love the birds and holiday makers visiting area are amazed. Never help with the budget though.... ha ha ha
I have been leaving peanuts and almonds out for the crows and they see me do it but they still don’t trust me enough to get anywhere near them till I leave. I do it on my private deck in the city. Maybe they don’t trust me because they are city birds

I have been making more of an effort to attract birds lately but instead of crows/ravens i now have a bunch of blue jays moving into my yard...I had previously only seen one in my life, and now they are everywhere. They are beautiful and interesting to watch but they are loud! I hear them scolding non-stop while i'm inside. They sound pretty pissed off, but i don't exactly know their language.
It's interesting that you brought this up. When attracting crows and ravens, jays tend to be attracted too, since they're in the same family of birds. I'd say their language is pretty much the same. Crows, ravens, jays, magpies and jackdaws (all in the Corvid family) have very similar behavior and language. I usually end up attracting Steller's Jays along with crows when calling crows. Once Jays become established to a location, they'll keep coming back.
Yes it is definitely the steller jays that have moved in! They are noisy but i like them. I have even moved some food to a window basket right in front of my kitchen window so i can eat with the birds :) I'm even starting to differentiate individual birds from behavior and small variations. Sometimes they peck at the window when the food is out, so i always tap on the window when i refill it. Still haven't gotten any crows or ravens (at least not that i have seen) I'm actually lucky to have quite a bit of wildlife in my area and even my yard, there are little quail families, squirrels, bunnies (that were actually born wild in my yard) deer, and there are horses and beavers down the road. There's even a rat that seems to live in my carport. oh and some bats. apparently my place is a popular destination for everything but people!
Those two crows were like "Yo, what's all this racket about? What's going on?" and later "Ugh, it's just one of those weird feather-less animals learning to speak, let's go home!" xD Anyways, great demonstration. I wasn't even aware such a tool existed!
I think the reaction would be more "shock" and "terror". How would you feel if you were walking down the street and a cat walked by and said: "Hey man, how ya do'in?" You would probably have a heart attack.
Depends on the animal, crows are real smart. They might just be as curious about seeing us mimic them as we are when we hear a raven croak a hello or a lyrebird imitating machinery

i love crows i did a really big project on them, i think killing them is very mean because crows are very intelligent and have very strong relationships with their family
When crows travel, they frequently travel in flocks -obviously. But when you see a crow traveling solo at higher altitude, he is usually scouting in preparations to bring the rest with him. Being ultra clever with excellent vision, he most likely saw you and curious about your calls. Nice video !

i love crows they are vary intelligent , they live 20 to 30 years, they can mimic speech if raise from young, they mate for life. When one goes ground to feed look for the mate watching ;-) They know if you are friend or unknown. Feed them, they will return same time next day watching for you, yes you, they remember you or your car ;-) Respect them as they feel you ;-) Yes, they have either great photo memory and/or read you if you are good in mind, heart, body language ;-) I've learned their language. Yes they respond to me sometimes. They are smarter then apes. They wait for me on schedule. Some mimic sounds I make when tossing food. They know. They ask. I share if I have. I respond to call very close, 10 feet sometimes, trust, memory, I show open hands and they seem to know and fly off ;-)

💙🌷... Hello Everyone. I am so excited. I've begun crow calling. For the purpose of being at one with nature and not disturbing anything. I can't believe it!! One big, healthy looking crow showed up ... 3-4 times. He appears to be a male. I don't have the Lohman device so I did my best with hand calling/gestures. I saw him on the telephone pole; staring at me and the vibes I was getting was positive. It seems we made a "connection" ... I hope he comes back. I've got some peanuts and that will be my next step. Brilliant :) I've only considered calling crows in the past few days, tried responding to a pair today just with my voice (not a bad attempt, but a bit too high for my range!) and they flew over to investigate, fairly high, then kept going. I'm off to buy a crow caller now! Also, I've never seen someone who lives in Windows XP before :P

Am so attracted by your linguistics of crow call and wonder how to treat one very curious local crow with whom i had happened to make an eye contact at my morning walk, Since then i would be often spotted by it and get scared when it playfully approaches me from above. Awesome video. I've been looking for something to attract the crows that come to my garden, so they get the food I put out. I really hope I can find a crow caller!
I use a MP3 recorder that has a recording of a three hour loop of Crow sounds. I set the MP3 player that is also connected to a small but loud speaker into the tree by tossing a rope over a branch and then tie the MP3 player at one end of the rope. Then I pull the MP3 and speaker at the end of one rope at the highest point of the tree. The higher the sound , the better. Now, I have pet crows that come to me and I have neighbors who think I weird but I don't give a care . You also have to put out food for them at specific times like 10am and 5pm every day routinely. They love eggs and potatoes. I put a very small amount of shinny glitter (neighbors are like WHAAAAT???) around the food just enough to get their attention when they are flying in the air i also have crow decoys.

Crows are complicated creatures in fact. I've read that the calls and their meanings even vary widely from place to place throughout their range. I can't keep any of it straight, but at least it's to fun to mimic them.

Does anyone have an idea as to how to make a "food" call/sound for crows? I ordered a crow call for this purpose. I have crows that now live on my property, as I've unintentionally developed a reputation among wild animals as the local sucker who feeds and befriends them. I have a particular fondness for the corvids. Sometimes I'm late with the crows' breakfast and they wander off elsewhere in search of it. I'd love to learn how to use the call to let them know when it's meal time. I'm afraid of accidentally "yelling" at them or scaring them off with the call, in my crow language ignorance.

Its just 3 long CAWWW CAWWWW CAWWWs wait a second & repeat. *Sentry Call - Crow's use this to alert of danger. It's 4 caws. 1 long, 2 short, 1 long CAWWW-CAW-CAW-CAWWW Just be patient & consistent. Once they learn your area, face & you're feeding them you won't scare them away. I'll do some hideous caws just to laugh at myself but keeps it fun like mocking them. They're smart. Eat most foods. They seem to like the unsalted peanuts in the shells the best. Come Back Call - what crows use when they fly by another crow Just 4 caws. 2 short & 2 long Fighting Call - If the come back call doesn't work, try the fighting call. Crow's use this when they're close. You can use it along with the come back call. It's a very excited call. 5 caws 2 long, 2 short, 1 long I memorized the calls on my crow call package. Good Luck!
Andrea, it's a complex language and quite nuanced. That particular call I'm not sure about. Justin has good ideas. If you keep feeding them, I suspect the call will become less important. I love Corvids as well. Fascinating birds!
I'm going to use your video to attract them to my home. I have food for them. I'm not sure what they like, but I got some tree borers and meal worms. I have walnuts, but I don't know if they would like them too.

The three elongated calls are disdain, I think. Or like, annoyed with this BS. Evidence: one did it on a rainy day with nothing going on while sitting on a perch soaked and very uncomfortable, with no other social activity around. But I have also heard a pair, one was in the tallest tree right before the daily migration make two elongated calls in this same tone, and the other (in call and response style recognition) quick called two times back at her. I believe that two quick calls signals something coming in from above, or, in-context, could represent going up in flight. The elongation could take the same contextual meaning of the word and imply an addional emotional connotation? Is there a place we could aggregate crow language?

Yeah, these are all the sounds I hear them use in a park where I give them water in a bird bath and they come to swim. This was very well done. Why don't you sit and wait for them to come? If you blow in it all the time they won't come. I wonder if I can get them to come to me easier with this crow whistle, than with an ordinary one?
I will try the gargle with my call, the predator alert you talked about is spot on, anytime I want to disperse the crows I use two short barks a couple of times and they fly off or hide, I also am going to put out food like someone else suggested in the comments.
Awesome! I agree the other videos don't explain very well how to make the sounds. I had to keep experimenting until it sounded right. My motive for using the crow call is for bird photography. Gets them to come real close!

Oh yes, I like to show appreciation for everyone commenting on my videos, and even on my old videos. 😀 I'm not sure how to attract them for food. I'm not sure if there is a call specific to that. I don't see anything wrong with hunting animals to eat them. I just don't agree with killing solely for sport. After all, we evolved to eat both meat and veggie. People who are even against hunting for food fail to realize that the meat they buy in the store is killed. And store bought meat might even have been killed more inhumanely than the average hunter in the woods hunting game. I do like my meat and the taste of freshly hunted game!!

I am an artist and pretty much only make crows (ravens) I did not even know why i make these. As i learn more and more about them i get more fascinated about them. i couldn't find any of it , a store told me there is no tool like this in Syria , they have almost all the animals voices except the crow , i bought speakers instead and connect it to my ipod and switch on crow voice ! , isn't it good idea ? but the problem i have American crow song and in Syria we have Hooded crow , there is some different between there songs , anyway thanks ^^
I’m just learning to use my new crow call, how long did this take you? I am struggling with rhythms, how long do you burble for? Also is it through the throat? Or are you doing it through your lips like a trumpet?
It took me a good solid two weeks to get it right. It is kinda hard to give technique advice through the comments, just as when I was learning to use it, I found peoples' typed instructions on the internet to be fairly useless in helping me. What I did, and what I think will help you the most in learning the technique, is to listen carefully to the sounds the crows make and simply practice imitating them. There seem to be many videos online of crows sounds or perhaps just listening to the crows in your area. That's what helped me more than anything else. But on the longer crow call sounds, burble the entire time you're blowing through it. But not on the alarm calls.
Also I've heard that if you leave peanuts that's a start to develop some sort of communication or relationship. I'm not for sure I'm new at this. Does anyone know about this? Thanks again. I'm going to bring my camera to see if I can take some pictures. Chandra

Those two crows were like "Yo, what's all this racket about? What's going on?" and later "Ugh, it's just one of those weird feather-less animals learning to speak, let's go home!" xD

I’ve never thought about how odd it would be to see a human mimicking animals from the animal’s point of view.
I think the reaction would be more "shock" and "terror". How would you feel if you were walking down the street and a cat walked by and said: "Hey man, how ya do'in?" You would probably have a heart attack.

Depends on the animal, crows are real smart. They might just be as curious about seeing us mimic them as we are when we hear a raven croak a hello or a lyrebird imitating machinery

i love crows i did a really big project on them, i think killing them is very mean because crows are very intelligent and have very strong relationships with their family
What kind of crow project did you do?
When crows travel, they frequently travel in flocks -obviously. But when you see a crow traveling solo at higher altitude, he is usually scouting in preparations to bring the rest with him. Being ultra clever with excellent vision, he most likely saw you and curious about your calls. Nice video !

i love crows they are vary intelligent , they live 20 to 30 years,
they can mimic speech if raise from young, they mate for life. When one goes ground to feed look for the mate watching ;-) They know if you are friend or unknown. Feed them, they will return same time next day watching for you, yes you, they remember you or your car ;-) Respect them as they feel you ;-) Yes, they have either great photo memory and/or read you if you are good in mind, heart, body language ;-) I've learned their language. Yes they respond to me sometimes. They are smarter then apes. They wait for me on schedule. Some mimic sounds I make when tossing food. They know. They ask. I share if I have. I respond to call very close, 10 feet sometimes, trust, memory, I show open hands and they seem to know and fly off ;-)

I agree. And I believe that to be true for any animal. As I mentioned in a previous post on a related matter, my sole purpose for owning and using a crow call is to get them close to me so I can photograph, film and study them. Crows are the most intelligent of all birds. Well, Corvids in general. Jays, Magpies, Ravens, Jackdaws. The crow call even attracts Steller's Jays where I live. Perfect for getting that great photograph!
Thanks for the video. I was trying to figure out if a crow could sound like a shrieking woman, specially one falling from a building. Now, I know it's possible! The look on your face when you attracted crows was golden.

💙🌷... Hello Everyone. I am so excited. I've begun crow calling. For the purpose of being at one with nature and not disturbing anything. I can't believe it!! One big, healthy looking crow showed up ... 3-4 times. He appears to be a male. I don't have the Lohman device so I did my best with hand calling/gestures. I saw him on the telephone pole; staring at me and the vibes I was getting was positive. It seems we made a "connection" ... I hope he comes back. I've got some peanuts and that will be my next step.

Brilliant :) I've only considered calling crows in the past few days, tried responding to a pair today just with my voice (not a bad attempt, but a bit too high for my range!) and they flew over to investigate, fairly high, then kept going. I'm off to buy a crow caller now!

Interesting! I have a whole set of Bird Whistles that look very similar. I bought them in Brazil and each one has the sound of a specific bird found in Brazil.

Am so attracted by your linguistics of crow call and wonder how to treat one very curious local crow with whom i had happened to make an eye contact at my morning walk, Since then i would be often spotted by it and get scared when it playfully approaches me from above. I use a MP3 recorder that has a recording of a three hour loop of Crow sounds. I set the MP3 player that is also connected to a small but loud speaker into the tree by tossing a rope over a branch and then tie the MP3 player at one end of the rope. Then I pull the MP3 and speaker at the end of one rope at the highest point of the tree. The higher the sound , the better. Now, I have pet crows that come to me and I have neighbors who think I weird but I don't give a care .
You also have to put out food for them at specific times like 10am and 5pm every day routinely. They love eggs and potatoes. I put a very small amount of shinny glitter (neighbors are like WHAAAAT???) around the food just enough to get their attention when they are flying in the air i also have crow decoys.

Crows are complicated creatures in fact. I've read that the calls and their meanings even vary widely from place to place throughout their range. I can't keep any of it straight, but at least it's to fun to mimic them.
Hi guys - very interesting and fun to read. I live near the coastline and have many coastal birds here. I started of feeding Yellow billed Kites ( Hawk) with chicken necks bought at the butchery. Then endangered species arrives like the Wooly Necked Storks. Jeez, they cost me a packet - at one stage 15 of the and they arrive for feed 3 times a day! And they sit for up to 7 necks serving! Then a crow individual arrived. then its mate, now grown to 5 every day! definitively offspring. The storks as well - few of them with broken legs, off foot etc etc. It's become a daily chore now. Feel too bad to leave home fo rmore than two days. But anyway, love the birds and holiday makers visiting area are amazed. Never help with the budget though.... ha ha ha

Does anyone have an idea as to how to make a "food" call/sound for crows? I ordered a crow call for this purpose. I have crows that now live on my property, as I've unintentionally developed a reputation among wild animals as the local sucker who feeds and befriends them. I have a particular fondness for the corvids. Sometimes I'm late with the crows' breakfast and they wander off elsewhere in search of it. I'd love to learn how to use the call to let them know when it's meal time. I'm afraid of accidentally "yelling" at them or scaring them off with the call, in my crow language ignorance.

Just be patient & consistent. Once they learn your area, face & you're feeding them you won't scare them away. I'll do some hideous caws just to laugh at myself but keeps it fun like mocking them. They're smart. Eat most foods.
They seem to like the unsalted peanuts in the shells the best.
Come Back Call - what crows use when they fly by another crow
Just 4 caws. 2 short & 2 long
Fighting Call - If the come back call doesn't work, try the fighting call. Crow's use this when they're close. You can use it along with the come back call. It's a very excited call. 5 caws

Andrea, it's a complex language and quite nuanced. That particular call I'm not sure about. Justin has good ideas. If you keep feeding them, I suspect the call will become less important. I love Corvids as well. Fascinating birds!

I'm going to use your video to attract them to my home. I have food for them. I'm not sure what they like, but I got some tree borers and meal worms. I have walnuts, but I don't know if they would like them too.

I thought so too. That's why I found it fun to try. One time I summoned a few hundred crows. It was INSANE! Here's the aftermath of it that I filmed. In the video I said "Something" got the crows all fired up. That something was me. For some reason I didn't want to admit to it in the video. The three elongated calls are disdain, I think. Or like, annoyed with this BS.
Evidence: one did it on a rainy day with nothing going on while sitting on a perch soaked and very uncomfortable, with no other social activity around.
But I have also heard a pair, one was in the tallest tree right before the daily migration make two elongated calls in this same tone, and the other (in call and response style recognition) quick called two times back at her.
I believe that two quick calls signals something coming in from above, or, in-context, could represent going up in flight.
The elongation could take the same contextual meaning of the word and imply an addional emotional connotation?
Is there a place we could aggregate crow language?

Yeah, these are all the sounds I hear them use in a park where I give them water in a bird bath and they come to swim. This was very well done. Why don't you sit and wait for them to come? If you blow in it all the time they won't come. I wonder if I can get them to come to me easier with this crow whistle, than with an ordinary one?

I will try the gargle with my call, the predator alert you talked about is spot on, anytime I want to disperse the crows I use two short barks a couple of times and they fly off or hide, I also am going to put out food like someone else suggested in the comments.

Oh yes, I like to show appreciation for everyone commenting on my videos, and even on my old videos. 😀 I'm not sure how to attract them for food. I'm not sure if there is a call specific to that. And I bought mine off of Amazon, but it looks like they're not selling that brand anymore. It seems you can still buy crow calls on Amazon though. I have no idea how good they are, or how they compare to the one I have.

I don't see anything wrong with hunting animals to eat them. I just don't agree with killing solely for sport. After all, we evolved to eat both meat and veggie. People who are even against hunting for food fail to realize that the meat they buy in the store is killed. And store bought meat might even have been killed more inhumanely than the average hunter in the woods hunting game. I do like my meat and the taste of freshly hunted game!!

i couldn't find any of it , a store told me there is no tool like this in Syria , they have almost all the animals voices except the crow , i bought speakers instead and connect it to my ipod and switch on crow voice ! , isn't it good idea ? but the problem i have American crow song and in Syria we have Hooded crow , there is some different between there songs , anyway thanks ^^
I’m just learning to use my new crow call, how long did this take you? I am struggling with rhythms, how long do you burble for? Also is it through the throat? Or are you doing it through your lips like a trumpet?
It took me a good solid two weeks to get it right. It is kinda hard to give technique advice through the comments, just as when I was learning to use it, I found peoples' typed instructions on the internet to be fairly useless in helping me. What I did, and what I think will help you the most in learning the technique, is to listen carefully to the sounds the crows make and simply practice imitating them. There seem to be many videos online of crows sounds or perhaps just listening to the crows in your area. That's what helped me more than anything else. But on the longer crow call sounds, burble the entire time you're blowing through it. But not on the alarm calls.
Why am I watching this? It's 1:20 in the morning. I don't have one and I don't need one.
Also I've heard that if you leave peanuts that's a start to develop some sort of communication or relationship. I'm not for sure I'm new at this. Does anyone know about this? Thanks again. I'm going to bring my camera to see if I can take some pictures. Chandra
