In this video we show " What is the difference between a raven and a crow ?" Know that in the western US we have Common Ravens and American Crows, so that's what this clip is comparing.
After viewing this video, test your Raven knowledge or learn more about ravens and crows by taking our "Raven Crow Training Test." Twelve action clips of real birds with original sound just as you would find them in the wild plus three bonus clips challenges all corvid lovers to try to identify the Common Raven from the American Crow.
Examples from all over the western United States include; The Grand Canyon - Arizona, Santa Fe and New Mexico, Olympic Peninsula - Washington, Bryce - Utah, Crystal Cove State Park - California and more.
And remember the test is just for fun and actually serves no other purpose...
Music is "Soaring" a piece written by my nephew Justin Enayat specifically for my raven videos, and I love it for I think it captures many of the emotions one would feel will flying and diving the way ravens do! - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

Ravens are crows who put their skill points into the tank tree rather than agility
I didn’t know that ravens and crows hung out together. I assumed all the “crows” in my neighborhood were just different sizes due to age. Now I realize a good number are ravens. Thanks for the education. I’ve been feeding a few regulars and now I hope to figure out which might be ravens. I flew hang gliders for more than 25 years along the Northern California coast and soared with ravens hawks and gulls quite a lot. The ravens were the most playful and always a joy to watch.
Me too. I just realize that the "crows" I thought I've been feeding are ravens. Interesting...
the raven are one of the most intelligence bird or animal you will find out there lol like dolphine
@@pedronchoxgrc19 same with crows. The whole family is intelligent
@@davidc. na actually raven are more intelligent than crows
They rather look alike, so I guess they're thinking hey that looks like my cousin, or brother from another mother.

Ravens much higher intelligence than crows
Crows and ravens are very funny to watch
so you're telling me Ravens will politely escort other birds out of their territory and that Crows are the ballsiest things on the planet and will dive bomb a hawk?
That is the way it "appears" from my limited and ground view ... ?
June Hollybell - small birds, in mobs, will harass both crows and hawks to drive them away.
I've seen a crow chase an eagle away in another video.
Pretty much lol the crows in my neighborhood will harass and dive at this one hawk that keeps coming back, but the crows here are all cowards and fly away before anything can really happen
Crows or even rooks will harass any bird of prey here. I often see them nipping buzzards in mid air or sparrowhawks. It is a strategy not uncommon even in mammal species on the ground. If you are harrassing that predator it is not able to hunt you down because...you've been busted. It eliminates any chance of a sneak attack which predators rely on.
Crow: "who are you?"
Raven: "I'm you but better."
But crows dive-bomb enemies, lol.

As a French, we are often using only one name for both Raven and Crow = "Corbeau". Very interesting video to capture the difference. Thanks a lot.
That is because they are both members of the Corvidae family which includes crows, magpies, rooks, jays, jackdaws and a few others...
An American crow is called la corneille d'Amérique and a raven is a corbeau with the correct name grand corbeau. Both are corvus subspecies but crows and common ravens are different like this video shows so well best video on comparing the two , here in Quebec we have both and they are fascinating to watch a compare
Thank you,great until the end.
🤔 In Romanian Raven=Corb Crow= Cioară
As you may know both Scotland and France were allies the old Scottish name for the crow is Corbie, what do you think? The French influences 🏴🇫🇷
Great info, last year I saw a raven close up on the ground and immediately knew it had to be a raven and not a crow because it was MASSIVE, at least as big as a hawk. So cool to see it up close, and it definitely had a more calm and less cautious temperament than crows.

I have a fondness to crows and ravens. I have been walking the same walk about 5 times a week and ive made friends with a crow, he or she has a small light spot around coin size on the chest. I have always stopped and spoken to it and it genuinely looks stunned a human is trying to communicate with it but intrigued by me. Very skittish if i move to quick as its always on high alert, but it seems to genuinely like me. or the attention. I have been bringing it some small bits of bread every other day as a gift to say thanks for the friendship.
I never understood the difference between the two and thought I had seen ravens until I saw one in the flesh for the first time yesterday. I thought it was a huge mutant bird and was impressed by its enormous size, really impressive animals.

Informative and interesting. I've been wondering how to tell them apart my whole life, without really looking into it. I think I assumed they were probably the same bird with minor variations.
The largest and most beautiful crow/ravens I've ever seen is in the highlands of northwest Mozambique where I was working as a pilot for UNHCR back in the 90's. The ravens/crows were the largest I'd ever seen and were sometimes marked with white. I imagine they were ravens because of their size. These two-toned ravens were the only one I've ever seen that deviated from the standard all-black color. Quite strikingly beautiful. As I recall, they sounded like the standard "caw caw caw" calls typical of covids.
Magpies perhaps !!!
"covids" has a totally different sound. Uglier if you ask me...
No no. They are far too large, plus they conform exactly to the covid morphology.@@user-hq7br2nh3r
One of my favorite crow memories is watching 2 crows mess with a flock of seagulls. My sister was feeding seagulls outside a second story window and crows kept snatching the food, getting the seagulls to chase them, doing a loop the loop, and chasing the seagulls before divebombing any seagulls going for the food so they could snatch it and anger the seagulls.
The crows seemed to be having a merry time of it and the seagulls seemed frustrated that they couldn't out maneuver the more aerodynamic and smarter crows.
*My surname is of no relation to the black birds, but I respect them.
A raven is an Edgar Alan Poe poem... Crow is a movie.
The Crow is a bunch of comics as well. ☆
@WarPaint 47 Yep.
Also a big difference is that one helps elephants learn to fly and the other guides souls to the other realm. Little trivia.

I knew we had crows in our yard because of their sound. I love watching them chase owls away from their nest. They are so smart and work so well together.
I've seen about 20 crows harassing an owl.
I noticed a number of Ravens hanging out in multiple viewing areas along the rim of the Grand Canyon in 2019. Very smart birds! No doubt they're using their charm to get treats from tourists.
The large primaries on the end of the wing are called Pinion feathers. A Crow has 16 of these. A Raven has 17. So I guess the difference between a Raven and a Crow is only a matter of a pinion. XD

AK has ravens and they are marvelous wonderful birds. A lot of people think they are pests because they are dumpster divers but the truth is they have distinct personalities and in time you can make friends with ravens. Up in the mountains I had a raven that would fly across the canyon and pass directly overhead and I could hear its wings thrashing the air as it flew. Every morning we’d exchange greetings before it moved on. I miss the wilderness of AK.

Ravens also are seen in male-female pairs. There was a hawk shadowing a raven. The raven called its partner who responded -- the hawk took off! I had a raven visit my concrete used-to-be a birdbath now a feeder today, Rare, only saw one once before do that. It looked young and was clearly not a crow. Good video!
The rare occasion where it's 100% of the time on topic with differences and not 80% creating expectations 15% making call to actions and 5% of actual information. Congratulations.
TY. I used to have a pet crow who slept outside in the woods at night. Clyde the crow was big and very smart. He would steal things in the house that were shiny, but Clyde always replaced what he stole, with a rock or leaf, or pice of junk. My pet crow had a sense of fairness. RIP Clyde
We rescued a crow on Christmas day when the temps dropped to 20 below. Of course the kids named him christmass ! He moved into the barn at our house with the horse's for the remainder of the winter. Long story short .. he hung around for 4 years and loved stealing the clothes pins off the laundry when the wife hung clothes out. We sure missed him when he left!

@@virgilhuston6776 I have 4.... ravens... crows... I don't know what the Hel they are, that frequent my backyard. LOL. But I've named them Munnin, Huggin, Synnin and Loki. I'm attempting to convince the wife that they are freezing outside and that they should live with us! She has not been.... receptive... of the idea.
@The Muckler That's what I thought too... But these have a wing span of about 3 - 3.5 feet and stand about a foot maybe a foot and a half tall. I've looked at their tailfeathers in flight and they are almost straight across, not really curved and definitely not tapered. They are big enough that when my mom saw them in flight, she thought they were buzzards until one landed in the yard across from us. (edit) I realized after I posted, that this was on a different thread. LOL. So, the birds I've got frequenting my yard tend to soar... a lot. They make the typical crow calls most of the time, however, I HAVE heard them croak at me several times. Usually when I'm late with their breakfast! LOL. They have "escorted" a hawk from my yard, but didn't fight it. Well, one tried to but the other three seemed to scold him for it.

I heard Ravens can remember a person up to five years , and a Raven can count up to five .
More and more researchers are doing all kinds of experiments on these birds. Now, they are finding out new things all the time. Course those of us who have worked with the birds for decades have tried to tell them for years but things have to go thorough the "system" to be "accepted."

One day a few years ago, my pet duck started "Talking" to a crow that was out of its sight. There was 15 minutes of non-stop, "Caw! Quack! Caw! Quack! Caw! Quack!" What they thought they were saying to each other I'll never know.
They where probably making a James Bond plan to kill you
Watch Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds " . YoU wIlL kNoW wHaT tHeY WeRe SaYiNg !
Lolol...😎
Duck: "Got the stuff?"
Raven: "Yeah"
they were probably not saying much
I fell in love with crows when I lived in Kansas City. We lived in Prairie Village, and I had a murderous cat that they used to follow around - they'd steal his kills. I saw a crow snatch a live baby bunny from that cat. The bunny was definitely still alive. (It was disturbing.) When we had leftover pizza, I used to frisbee it up onto the roof of the screened-in porch. The most exciting experience I had with crows was seeing them assemble -- by the hundreds -- in KC's "Plaza" shopping district.
I am late to discovering this, but it is wonderful and so informative! Thank you for creating it.👏
My wife has befriended a local mob of crows for years now. They defintely know and trust her and my daughters and me somewhat and they are very vocal when the ladies are around at snack time. Not just cawing.Clicks, chirps, clacks and grunts are all there along with gestures like ruffling feathers, preening, fluffing wings. They have a very wide range of communications. They know me but while they will sit close to my wife they keep their distance if I am near.
Funny how person precise they can be!
I've seen a raven exactly once in my life, but I knew immediately because it was a damn big bird alright!
I had never seen one until I moved to Southeast Alaska. We see dozens of them every day here! The whole place is filled with the lovliest symphony of their calls, and they can make sooo so many different sounds. They love hanging out around grocery store parking lots, and will often hop in the back of people's trucks to look for fish scraps. They're not at all afraid of people, and will kind of talk to you as you walk by, haha. They're very sweet actually, and super intelligent.
Ravens are majestic!
Blue black gorgeous feathers. ♡
How do you tell crows from Starlings? my wife, who has been a bird watcher, says that starlings have a shinier coat on their heads that has a purplish glow in sunlight. Is that true?
@@glennso47 starlings have white spots and fly much differently than corvids.
@@glennso47 I have a family of them that comes back each spring to set up house under the eaves of a church next door. I'm on the third floor of my building so I get an eye level view from my kitchen. 1/ They seem to snipe at each other all the time, they can't just take it easy sitting in a row on the eaves trough for very long before one gets to harassing the others. I can't make out if it's the adults or the young that catch up to adults in size very rapidly. 2/ They have developed iridescent spackling on their breasts this fall. I'm told that's a trait of starlings. Yes their plumage has some sheen in bright light. 3/ They carry parasites like mites so I wouldn't encourage having them hanging around near your own living space.
I TRULEY enjoyed this video. THANK YOU!!❤
Crow: "Get the f**k out of here or I'll kill you!"
Raven: "Let me escort you out from my property, kind sir."
As s former Literature professor, I’m pleased that people are still quoting a poem originally published 175 years ago! Poe rocks !
Fyi, saw his dorm room at University of Virginia, kept in origional condition.
We're still using wheels, too. Tell your engineering colleagues. Haha
Connie Crawford Romeo and Juliet sucks just saying
money way Just saying- people have been reading and enjoying Romeo ad Juliet for 423 years! Have you written anything that will continue to still be read for such a long time? Lol! That’s over 16 generations of human civilization!
Just 175 years? This poem in Old Norse about a raven is more than 1,100 years old: heimskringla.no/wiki/Haraldskvæði_(Hrafnsmál)_(B1)
It's was written by Þórbjǫrn hornklofi around 900 A.D. Here translated to English: hafrsfjord.org/en/haraldskvaethi/
7:28 That's very ringtone worthy
Thanks for this, a very clear guide for telling the difference.
I love all Corvids, but Ravens have my heart. 💖
I thought I would add that Ravens do have a tendency to travel in pairs/small groups and Crows tend to gather and stay on larger groups. 💖💖💖
Fun fact. In Russian the words Raven and Crow have the same root and actually almost identical.
Raven - Ворон
Crow - Ворона
Because in Russian the letter "a" is usually put in the end of feminine words, there is a misconception that Crows are female Ravens (and the other way around).
True
The same thing in lithuanian. Raven - Varnas, Crow - Varna. People here also sometimes think that.
Which is funny, because in birds, the females are bigger than the males, haha
In Italian there isn't a different word for those two birds. Both are called "Corvo"
AvoidingCape they probably couldn't tell them apart haha
I never knew I could learn to tell the difference between these two birds but now I certainly can! Thank you, sir!
Thank you so much. This is the best coverage on ALL the differences.
Great video.
The question at the beginning was a real attention catcher and the video was very informative
so basically a Raven is level II

Us humans and our need to make everything into black and white, have piles of data about a species written in numbers, described by math. A raven is a raven. Pure and simple. Fascinating birds!
As a 67 year old deer hunter , I’m amazed to hear new vocalizations from the ravens every year while in the forest, it is said by scientists that they have over 300.
There was a crow that used to call and whisle the dog to round up the cows, it could mimic my dads voice as he called out "go way back joe. "
I recon crows are smarter than they get credit for being.
They can mimic human speech
Goddamnit boomer go back to your hole who let you out
If you're fascinated by nature why do you kill it?
@@user-dt3hk7fu8w i do not approve of boomers but but i don't approve of you either.
I like them both but I'm struck by the sheer beauty of Ravens especially in flight.
This was such a great video. A lot of interesting information. Beautiful music as well.
I love this dude talking to them and thanking them.
