1,000th Video + How Invisible People Started + How YOU Can Help End Homelessness

  • This is Invisible People's 1,000th video uploaded to UA-cam. Almost 900 of our videos are first-person interviews of homeless people sharing the realities of homelessness unfiltered and unedited.
Invisible People is a pioneer in innovative storytelling, and social media use to educate the public on homelessness, and it's all made possible by supporters just like you.
I take this milestone very serious. It's the end of 2019. It's the end of this decade. Invisible People has continued to make history since our beginning in 2008. Although we have been around for eleven years, 2020, and beyond Invisible People will grow to reach more people and have more impact in helping to end homelessness.
When I started Invisible People, I could not edit video. The laptop I had didn't have a hard drive fast enough for video editing. Being a television producer by trade, I almost didn't do this. To me, a video has to have broll, music, and graphics. No one just uploads a video without editing it, but the raw and unedited videos uploaded to Invisible People was the magic that connected to people.
For the last week, I wrestled with the production of this video. I guess the TV producer is still strong in me. I started writing a script. I started gathering old photos. Then my friend Chis Brogan responded to a tweet with these three words, "just press record," which is how Invisible People began, so I did just that.
I pressed record and started talking. I didn't plan on going on for an hour, but you are all family now, and once I started talking, I kept going.
In this video, I share about the very early days of Invisible People. How I got the idea from a coffee table book in my boss's office. How he laid me off shortly after, and then I had the time. I share about working temp jobs at the Los Angeles Winter Shelter and how that changed me. I talk about my very first trip to Sacramento's tent cities after Oprah highlighted them on her show, and it turned into a mess. That trip then led to a tech startup bringing me up to Seattle to talk to their developers, which led to meeting Chris Pirillo, who bought me my first iPhone with the ability to record video. Chris then asked me to speak at Gnomedex, and that's where I met Chris Brogan, Jeff Pulver, Liz Strauss, and so many of you that helped Invisible People grow to fight homelessness.
Thanks to all of you that support us on Patreon [ / invisiblepeople ] or via or website [invisiblepeople.tv/donate] and generous donations from Craig Newmark Philanthropies and Hanesbrands Inc, this year Invisible People was able to launch a brand refresh and a new impact and engagement strategy. We now have a place for people to learn about homelessness, we post original news stories daily from both housed and homeless writers, and we launched a campaign for you to be able to contact your state and federal legislators.
In 2018, we reached over a billion people. So far this year, we reached over 1.3 billion people, up 300 million from last year. That number doesn't include the close to 30 million yearly views on UA-cam.
I also share in this video how you can help to end homelessness. 1) educate yourself and those around you 2) support local homeless services that are working to end homelessness, not just maintain it 3) advocate for more affordable housing, more support shelters, more housing, more shelters, and more support for addiction and mental health.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

Im a formerly homeless recovering addict. I am going to school through a program where formerly homeless people and former addicts are preferred. Three months of school, a jobs fair and 3 months of internship and i will be working for the county (Contra Costa County California) helping people like my forner self. I need to understand the problem as best I can so i dont become another useless bureaucrat.

I understand people have experienced terrible events in their lives. The point is, if you provide people with a home “Not A Box” it will help them build wealth and stability. Stability is the Key to success. I too was homeless in 1984-85 in Hayward, California. I got myself out of it quickly. It took me over 30 years to finally break free from having to pay rent to a landlord. I have never used drugs or consumed alcohol yet I ended up homeless. I have been single my entire life. I have had friends that have helped me, but that’s not the solution to the problem. I am also Poverty stricken with very low income. But I pay my mortgage and utilities because I never want to be homeless again.

Very inspiring pep talk. I’ve talked to my attorney about everything we need to do legally to do something like this on the east coast. We are now working on a type of advocacy journalism to tell stories of people that are experiencing homelessness to help advance problem-solving in the sector. It will also give us a scope on the issues surrounding their barriers in housing and self-sustainability. We thank you so much for pioneering this kind of reporting and we hope incorporating something like this into our program will resonate with people seeking a way to help end homelessness in West Virginia. Keep up the great work! We will be watching and learning.

THANK YOU, MARK. I know this was posted in 2019 and we are now going through a pandemic that no one could of imaged. This will probably change some of the plains for Invisible People BUT I know this will not bring you down. Your work is to important to end the story at 1000 video's. Don't stop doing what you do for homeless. Thank YOU !!!!

Congrats! You and Invisible People are doing amazing things and I look forward to seeing the continuation of change you create among the public in regards to homelessness. You've educated me and so many others that otherwise wouldn't see the reality many of these folks live on the daily. Found your channel right after a trip to NY where for the first time in was bombarded by homeless folk trying to rob me of money. I was a tiny 17 year old 5"3 barely 100 lbs. It scared me. But it also put into perspective that those were people though not going about it the right way were trying to survive. I dont hate them for what happened but I feel bad they had to go to those lengths. I'm used to drug addicts in my neck of the wood in NH but it was an eye opener to how cutthroat the streets can be in those more populated areas where homelessness is on the rise. I tried to help some folk but they refused it unless it was a crisp $20 since it's the price of alot of their drugs of choice. I saw people wrapped in thin tattered fabrics to keep themselves warm as people walked all over them. It was horrifying. One of which we came across was no longer alive, he was partially frozen to the sidewalk. And yet people around him took no notice, all rushing and shoving to get to work. It broke my heart but really showed how disgusting people really are. That was what I took from my trip to NY, the cruelty. Seeing that it's like that and worse by tenfold in other areas makes my heart break in two.

I had not practice my english since high school, so I dont know if Im writing this in a proper way. I just want to say thank you Mark for the job you are doing, its amazing and really inspiring. Im an arquitect from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I can tell you we are living a hard time right now: 45% poverty, 50% anual inflation, and a lack of 2,5 millon homes in a country whith a population of 45 millon people. That been said, in Buenos Aires whith a population of 3 millon, 20% of the houses/appartments are inhabited for different reasons. I hope governments do the right thing about social housing in a very near future. Regards.

WoW, am i ever glad i stumbled across your 1000th video acknowledgment and talk !!! What an incredible story ! I had watched a couple of your interviews & the Haight / Ashbury Youth Homelessness video and became so curious about the story behind this project. And hey, what do ya know, I practically tripped over this just released answer ! What an amazing unfolding of the whole story!!! I think you just might be cutting the key that will unlock this huge issue, allowing for the assembly of a movement from your viewers: kids in school, community groups, mayors [!] recognizing where they could fit in with helping. ~ Congratulations on all the good things, set in motion for this coming New Year, which has only just arrived ! As it continues to show up, may it be a year and a decade for the Visionary, such as yourself.

That's a great video. I just love listening to your story. And through these kind of videos I get to understand how Invisible People works and what is behind all those story telling videos of homeless people. Because I really didn't understand, now I do. You really give everything into this and your intention is so pure. Thank you for explaining all of this.

Mark look at the difference that you have made people now think differently when it comes to homeless people they don't grab them with a drug addict or alcoholic and y'all know that it can happen to anyone they know where to go for help when they have a problem
