Homeless People Living in Freezing Cold in Ithaca's Tent City, The Jungle

  • Only moments after walking into Ithaca's infamous homeless camp known as The Jungle, we learned of a homeless woman who had severe burns from trying to put out a fire the night before. When she came out of the shack they were living in, you could see how the fire burned through the layers of clothes she was wearing on her arm and leg. The woman is screaming in pain.
Luckily, Deb and Carmen were there to help. There was also an outreach worker from the Department of Social Services, but he didn't have a vehicle. Deb took the young woman to the emergency room where she was treated and later released.
This all might seem a little odd to ordinary folks, but Carmen and Deb are not typical. They are not social workers. They are not even volunteers. They are simply concerned citizens doing what they can to help their homeless neighbors.
Deb's husband is a dentist. The original plan to start the day was Deb was going to outreach with us and then drive a few of their homeless and formerly homeless friends to get dental work done. Compassion to help people is deep-rooted in both Carmen's and Deb's families!
Others are part of the Ithaca Homeless Crisis Community Group [ / 869415259888079 ] doing what they can to help the homeless people living in shacks and tents. Still, there are not enough people and not close enough resources to support all the people who need help.
Ithaca is a rural community in Upstate New York. Although the cost of housing is high, the funding for social services you'd see in a larger city is not available. There literally is no place for all of the homeless people to go to get the help they need.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

We have a van called “ a cup of water” that drives around & delivers prepared food water & some supplies to homeless camps in Maui. Believe it or not when we moved camps I called them to let them know where we were & that was a hard time for us we needed their visit.. however they said our area was deemed “ to dangerous “ & will not come to us we even offered to meet them at the road but it was a no. They offered us to come to the office but I have no vehicle & I have kids I’m not going to force to walk miles there & back.
Things have gotten better I am working Fulltime, one kid is getting straight A’s & my 16 yr old is now working too. Still houseless. But we have each other. Wherever we are together is home. There aren’t much resources here. All my kids want is a house & we can’t afford one here w/o help. Not sure if anyone will read this but the impact & importantance of what you guys are out doing is tremendous. It can be life & death. It can also be the only kindness they are showed at all .. ever. 💜 bless!

I believe it's up to everyone to help someone without expecting anything in return If everyone did that there wouldn't be anyone needing anything.unfortunatly the world isn't like that.I want to be one who does something and it starts right here where I live. We have the same thing here people that are homeless, sleeping in cars in the woods. We have to do Something right here where we are that's going to make a difference If you have 2 hands and 2feet and are able we can do something to help!

Being realistic the problem of homelessness is not going to get better, most likely worse. So, I would like to suggest to you a solution to the homeless problem in your immediate area. I have given this problem much research in alternative lifestyes and one that looks extremely promising and really cheap to create. Why not build living spaces into the earth. Many people are doing it for several reasons that make a lot of sense to me. You have 25 people on how much landspace and whose land are they on is my first question? If you can embarrass the official society in doing something I think you will get no hassles from the city your in. Because this solution is clean (unsightly) and solves the problem of heat, and serves as permanent housing for the homeless. Here are two videos on UA-cam to watch, search: Dan {Price's underground home and then search Idaho Modern Old timer builds u...d & solar $50 houses. Also, socks are the most important item a homeless person needs. Hope to here back from you. Dan

We can all buy a cup of coffee or tea when it's cold a bowl of soup or a bottle of water. Cheap cooler so they can get ice. All sorts of things we already have. I left a church for the very reason spoken here. It was a very wealthy church with no outreach programs. There were 2 or 3 men on their "benevolence committee" that would have someone that came to the church for help fill out an application and interview them deeper. I felt there should have been a soup kitchen and clothing and food pantry. I was able physically back then. I asked and no one would let me help or listen. Everyone is in their comfort zones in the churches. I am physically disabled from a car accident and can't walk alone. I am not able to do much financially. Every day I pray for God to show me how to help them and dream of creating a tiny village. I was raised in foster care. My biological mother walked up and down peddling pencils. Nothing wrong with that. She's gone now. I wish I had been able to do for her. If I started a tiny village I'd probably dedicate it in her memory. She was a traumatized army nurse veteran. I can't help build. I can't help buy. I do what I can and trust God for it all. People say "they make their choices". No. Many times they don't and if you do anything in Jesus' name, He will multiply it and bless it. I have lived much more trauma than mentioned here. I know what it does. I've lost a son. I've been abused. Spit on. I've been very close to where these are now. I've gone weeks without food, still walk yo work in the freezing cold rain and not have the money to run my heat with no food. I've lived on free saltine packs and butter from food places while others ate. If anyone reading this has gotten this far, please pray for these, for me (I'm crippled now), and do what we can to serve our fellow man as Carmen said. God bless him and Debbie. God bless you Mark. God bless the homeless people. God bless us all.

I watched the video 2 years ago when that couple had just lost their baby. I'm so sorry to hear that she's still out there and that she's been burned. My heart aches every time I c these vids. I'm in Rochester, just a few of hours out of Ithaca. If you know of a tent city in this area and can give me info on it, I will gladly help any way I can. I do take bagfuls of clothes to the Open Door Mission in the city but I know there has to b a camp in Rochester. It's much bigger than Ithaca. There was one and the city came, bulldozed all their tents and had all their belongings tossed in huge loaders and hauled away. It was under one of the large bridges near the river. And they lost everything. I'm on disability and can't go trudging up and down hills but I have a vehicle, funds and time to help those living outside in this freezing New York winter. Again, if u have any info on a camp in the Rochester area, please let me know. God bless you and Carmen for doing what you do. And Carmen is right. THIS is exactly what its gonna take ..regular ppl who have been doing nothing and HAVE the resources etc to get the homeless BASIC human necessities. Even hoarders IN EVERY CITY could at least give these poor homeless ppl stuff that is just being hoarded. (just a thought) Anyone who has way more than they need and plenty of time and KNOW about those are struggling to this extreme nearby ~it's about time to get out of hiding and take action!! And help your fellow humans. What's it gonna take to motivate y'all? I know there are soo many ppl who do nothing and could easily do SOMETHING. Ignoring the homeless will not make the problem disappear. Colin IS SO RIGHT! How bout keeping the preaching out of it all and just prove what u believe through action.

What happens when homeless people outnumbers the wealthy people? Can government be overturned? Or will complete chaos abrupt? Will the majority take advantage of the minority? If fear ever prevents the poor people from being helped, is there any hope? And now these three still exist faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love. We all need to focus on love. Love conquers all. 1 Corinthians 13 tells us what love is.

YES they NEED to make sure our veterans arent homeless and hungry but also there's A LOT of people looking for sum1 to save them when they should be saving themselves ! All we have in this world IS OURSELVES ! If u cant help urself in most ways.. No one else can 🤷 They need help mentally etc (some) But u can only lead a horse to water... Not make them drink it !

    Finally after many phone calls
    And news got wind
    And they actually got help
Thankfully owner of the property left them stay there
Until media got ahold of it
    And they got help
