  • If you think you can't do something flying or what ever, watch this.
    I was very moved by this young ladies ablities, but may be her attitude was even more impressive.
    This young woman, Jessica Cox was born with out arms and learned to fly. As a former flight instructor and a professional airline pilot. I can tell you this is really an inspirational thing to everyone, much less pilots. Way to go Jessica. Watching her fly so smoothly and confidently is very impressive (even with two arms). Trust me I know, nicely done. Wish I had this video when I was teaching full time.
    The plane she is flying is called an Ercoupe (pronounced air-coupe) which does have rudder pedals. The Ercoupe was made in the late 40's and early 50's. The unique thing about Ercoupe is it's one of the few airplanes to be made and certified with out pedals. With out rudder pedals Jessica is free to use her feet as hands.
    There have been other handicapped pilots who convert and modify controls of other planes but Jessica's plane is stock. I belive shi is the only one to fly with no arms in a stock or modified plane of any kind.

    I used to fly many years ago. I think she is very good and as cute as a bug. What is amazing about people like her is not allowing her handicap to keep her from achieving but generally people like her are not even aware or think they are handicapped at all.

    She's flying an Ercoupe. See the video notes. The Ercoupe is made standard with no rudder pedals, the yoke (wheel) is tied into the rudder and nose wheel steering. The brake is a hand-brake, in this case a foot brake. Some handicapped pilots have a plane modified with hand controls, say if they're paralyzed waist down. However in this case she's a perfect fit for the standard certified Ercoupe. For her to fly other planes with rudder pedals, she would need it modified.

    The Ercoupe lands crabbed. The gear is designed for it and handles the side loads. So no slip is required for a crosswind landing.

I'm sure it was not easy. I think you should just appreciate it for what it is, mans or womans will is some powerful stuff and with the help of God, almost anything might be possible. Don't quit & make it possible. Any way I got a kick out of as a Pilot and it touched me. Cheers

    I understand your concern, as a pilot well over 10,000 hrs, several thousand as flight instructor, I assure you she can do it. She plays piano w/ her feet! The plane she flys requires no foot input to control, no pedals. Also she's bright. Dumb pilots w/ arms are unsafe. She knows her limits & fly's within. I trained many student pilots. She's HAS TO, meet FAA qualification standards for certification, no exception. She has limits, sure but is safe in those limits? She ROCKS in general aviation!

  • @gmcjetpilot
    @gmcjetpilot  15 років тому

    I've never owned one or flew one but they are nice flying planes I hear. The idea of rudder pedal alerion inter-connect really never took-off so to speak, but its a neat idea w/ obvious limitations. You can't cross-control, intentional yawing of the plane with rudder opposite of bank. For cross wind landings you just fly it down land in a crab I beleive. Most pilots want more independent rudder-aileron control. Mooney made the plane for awhile, may be w/ rudder pedals I think, could be wrong.

    Fair question, I'm an airline pilot, former cert flight instructor. Fed Reg's, FAA is stringent, she HAS TO meet criteria & tested for flt proficiency, incl emergency procedures, no wiggle room. Pilots need to meet medical standards. Disabled pilots can get medical wavers w/ special review & may have extra limits in type of plane (SEE info notes) or flight conditions they may fly? She may have no restrictions. No hydraulics. The pilots BRAIN is most important factor in an emergency. (see info)

    Any thing that could cause you loss of consciousnesses is different from a physical impairment. I believe she has sport pilot certificate. The medical requirements are different. However for a private pilot certificate you need a 3rd class medical. Wavers are given on a case by case basis, often requiring a special practical (in the airplane) evaluation. No doubt she is limited to that airplane or special adapted aircraft. As a former flight instructor, watching the video, she is safe.

    The Ercoupe has been discussed in detail in the video notes and previous comments. Your comment that it was designed for people missing legs who wanted to be pilots (WWII vets) is wrong. The Ercoupe came out in 1941 and went bust the first time in 1946 (blows the WWII theory). It had 3-innovations of the day: Nose gear (avoid nose over of wheel planes), twin tail with limited elevator travel (stall/spin proof) and interconnect of aileron/rudder. It was to make it easier for ALL people to fly.

    Who knows, could be insurance. Could be the reporter hates flying (he does seem a little skiddish in general from what I've seen); could be they wanted good camara angle, or she did fly him but didn't use the footage. She can fly the plane just fine. She's not a cocky pilot (like some pilots with arms can be). She'll picks days with out hurricane cross winds as she builds experience. Who wants to fly on those days anyway. I make my living flying & I have to fly, well to get paid at least.
