    The mangosteen is also called the "honest fruit" simply because the number of clovers at the bottom tells you exactly how many cloves you'll get once you crack it open.
    Btw, I've never seen someone who loves mangosteen so much. Asian fruits are always fragrant (in various ways, if we considered the durian), so yeah... God, I miss home already... (not because I'm not in Asia, but because I'm in another part where my favourite fruits aren't available anywhere :'D)

    I was in Guatemala in May and we picked gallons of fresh lychees. It was cool to taste variation found from tree to tree. What made the experience so great is that my professor for the class happened to be Chinese. Every time we ate some or went to pick them she got super excited. I haven't tried the other two but they look delicious! One of my favorite fruits though is jackfruit (although most people I know absolutely hate it). :D

    I'm lucky enough to live in an Asian community so there are plenty of Asian fruits. Out of those, lychee would be my favourite. Sweet and juicy. As a consequence, they're very sticky when they dry on you though.
    I like all of these. As well as jackfruit, durian, long an, dragon fruit and persimmon. I'm not picky with food :P

    Good quality mangosteen is soooo amazing. I completely agree with your description: like peach, clementine and lychee rolled into one. They are next to impossible to get good ones where I am in Canada :'( They look fine on the outside but bad or just tasteless on the inside. Only ever had good ones while visiting Asia.

    I want to try these Asian fruits so bad, because they're delicious culturally. My dad loves to eat Apple Pears every year during the spring and the summer. The produce market located up the street from our house has them out in season annually. The DNA is crossbred between an apple and a pear like you said.

    • @sianzations2605
      @sianzations2605 6 років тому +1

      Lychee is the tastiest and juiciest of the three. Lychee has a smooth seed that is similar to longan so you can bite off the flesh easily, leaving only the smooth shiny seed. Rambutans have a rough seed somewhat like an almond nut. When you try to bite off the flesh, sometimes part of the seed might peel like a tree bark and stick with the flesh. All of them are sweet in their own way but lychee is most tender like grapes, so it is more juicy.

    I grow up in Vietnam and I must say...I'm very lucky to have tried almost all kinds of tropical fruits. Each one has many kinds of itself and depends on where they grow, the taste may very vary. In VN, mangosteens in Binh Duong province is most famous(I think) for its juicy sweetness n light souring, in other places they are maybe more sour. Now I'm in America and it's little bit disappointing about variety of tropical fruits. I don't see any fruit I liked at Krogers in Richmond city, Ohio.

    The ban on importing mangosteens was lifted in 2007, but they must be irradiated prior to import to kill the eggs of the Asian fruit fly. Also, Sichuan peppercorns from China were banned until 2005 to avoid introducing a citrus blight; they can now only be imported if heated to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit first.

    You can buy 3-4kg of the best mangosteen in Thailand with $20~!
    I've tried some mangosteen in other Asian countries (no offend intended here, just my personal thought of the taste) but they all were not as sweet and meaty as the Thai's one. I bought 2kg in Malaysia once and it was super good, later found out that it was imported from Thailand.

    I'm not a big fruit fan either. Other fragrant Asian fruits that you seldom find in North America are champedak and rambutan. The latter can be found more often than the former. Custard apple and sour sop (Spanish: guanabana) are also great. Sour sop is grown in Latin America and makes a refreshing drink :) Have you tried any of these?

      It’s just a hop on metro north, then the number 6 subway down to Manhattan Chinatown when the fruit vendors are out on canal street.

    Just a note, holding a lychee stem up and applying pressure near the top around the fattest part of the lychee results in the skin splitting into two lengthwise.
    It's a much easier and faster way to peel one.

      Pretty similar to how you open a mangosteen as well.

    Of all the asian fruit I've tried, longyan wins hands down for me. I've never found a good batch in Australia though. The freshest and most amazing longyan taste like they've been dipped in liqueur, soooooo yum! Lychees for me are like the longyan's little sister. Second-best fruit would be dongshizi (after you freeze it and defrost it and suck out its gooey magicness, oooohhhh.....)

    @StrictlyDumpling Did you know that if you count the clover leaf at the bottom of the the mangosteen it would be the equal amount of pieces inside :) I'm from thailand and mangosteen is like freaking cheap 1kg is like less than 4 buck XD in asia american fruit are the expense one

  • @sergiol114
    @sergiol114 9 років тому

    In Indonesia, we call it the honest fruit. That clover thing on the bottom tells u how much clove you have on the inside. If there's 6 petals on the bottom, there will be 6 cloves inside. In Indonesia they are very cheap :)

    Ohhhhh my God I love Mangosteen!!! My mouth was watering when I was watching you open it, I'm not kidding.... I had some in Sri Lanka for the very first time and it ruined me for other fruits lol xD
    Oh and btw, I don't like apples either.

    They lifted the ban on mangosteens about ten years ago. Now you can find them at 99 Ranch throughout the season.

    The ban on Mangosteens was lifted in 2007. They used to believe that they harbored a fruit fly that was non native and could be destructive.

    Mikey, when I took a trip from Northern China to Guangzhou (Canton 廣州) in 1981, litchi (_lìzhī_ 荔枝) fruit happened to be in season. I was ecstatic, bought a whole bagful and started to devour them right in the middle of the plaza in front of the main train station. A mature lady stopped me and, probably in her best Mandarin, told me that a young man like me shouldn't eat so many of those fruit. I wondered why, until a Chinese friend told me they are considered an aphrodisiac. (The local matron may have been afraid of what I might do to the hapless local women.)
    Have you ever heard about this attribution (or myth)?

      All I know is what my mother told me, lychee is considered "hot" in Chinese medicine. You could get a sore throat due to inflammation, worse temper, I'm not sure what others symptoms are associated with it. She also told me to be moderate when eating fried food because of this.
      And here's Mikey, eating hot oil like it's nothing. Maybe he has a higher tolerance or immunity.

    Back in our generation there weren't a lot of fruits grown in northern china because it was so damn cold during the winter and planting fruits was impossible back then.unlike the south were the climate was warmer and soil was more moist and easy to plant fruit than the north,cause the soil up there is way too dry.so mikey I can understand where you're coming from,stick with only one's you can tolerate,and avoid the one's you can't.i'm half northern Chinese from my dad side of the family,so I get it.
