    I'm in 9a and I'll definitely be covering my dragons with burlap this winter. Getting to be about that time actually.

    Surprisingly, my Tricia turned into soup this winter, when it is known to be cold hardy. In addition this winter, where I live, the temperature dropped below zero degrees Celsius at night just a few times during the winter.

      @RAREDRAGONFRUIT  Рік тому

      Bummer. I had Medusa and Gray Panama as the 2 Ocamponis that got damaged this winter. Here, Tricia already has new growth

    • @RAREDRAGONFRUIT
      @RAREDRAGONFRUIT  Рік тому

      Yes, that is another challenge depending on where you live. If the plants are active or dormants, UV index, and temps are the biggest factors for dragons getting cooked. Wrap them in some burlap before the heat or try using 30-50% shade cloth.

    What survives best? I’m new to this, lost King Kong, a Hawaiian orange, and a Ecuador trying to root.

      Most Ocamponis and many hybrids. Sugar Dragon/ Voo Doo Child are both hardy too and self fertile.

    Start to think to build a no heat greenhouse to put all the plants inside in winter.

    • @RAREDRAGONFRUIT
      @RAREDRAGONFRUIT  Рік тому +1

      Yes, the greenhouse idea or 50% shade cloth are both used with success in California

    Does it tolerate cold weather?

    • @Shive55
      @Shive55 Рік тому +1

    I’m also 9b-FL and my Palora, Red Jaina, and Natural Mystic are all fine and healthy. They are about 3 years old now.
    My American Beauty took a hit though.

      Nice! We had a very cold winter this year. Low in 2022 was 29 degrees and this year we had long bouts of low to mid 30's. Usually it's warmer here.

    Excellent video. I’m 9b just up the coast. My most sensitive plant by far is Vietnamese white, mushy and rust all over. Second sensitive is American beauty, but the damage is very negligible, just more rust than I’d like. Please do a compaction video, too 5 thriving varieties over our wet winter.
    I actually got rid of my natural mystic and palora because I was afraid my foggy weather would be too much for them. Glad I took that step!

      Nice! Yes, some undatus can be sensitive to the cold. I like K-1, its my favorite white fleshed variety. I will do a 5 varieties that thrive video this weekend, thanks for the idea.

      @@RAREDRAGONFRUIT Yeah! We have very limited varieties here. Some collectors are trying to import good varieties from US and TLM. But it’s too pricy and complicated also. Hope after couple years later we gonna have some awesome varieties to share in Market.

      Hmm, That may be a bit harder since some of the best performing dragons are unknowns. Generally, El Grullo, G-2, Physical Graffiti, my version of La Verne Pink, Sugar Dragon, Maria Fucsia, and many hybrids do well in zone 9b.

    I lost my Seoul Kitchen, Tasty, and Thanos. I had stem rot on my Condor, DK, Starburst, Chameleon, White King hollywood, Hawaiian Red, and Donovan's Laverne Red. I lost first year branches on my Palora.I had some concerns of losing my Edgar's Baby, Bien Hoa Red, and a couple of Sugar Dragons, that went red with stress and became flimsy and soft. They are now strong, plump and growing new shoots.

      The more developed the roots, the more resistant to cold... except for polyrhizus and costaricensis.
