    Fun Fact: Jack Nicholson was originally considered for the role of the old man, but Darren McGavin was given the role because let's face it, this was a role he was born to play.

    • @patrickdumas224
      @patrickdumas224 3 роки тому +9

      That's right, plus I think Jack also wasn't available to play the old man, cause I think he was in the process of working on something else around that same time.

      Jack Nicholson's a great actor but him in this role would've been way too distracting and out of place. Darren McGavin was perfect with his facial expressions, and his mannerisms that highlighted a tough but loving father.

    Clearly, she broke the lamp on purpose. You can tell by how the leg part was shattered like a crushed egg shell in three different sections, literally looking like she picked it up and slammed it down on the table corner. Had she accidentally knocked it over, the most damage that lamp would have had is a bent shade bracket and maybe a broken top lightbulb.

      That's true. I was thinking that too. Unless maybe the scene from 2:07-3:08 was probably like 30 minutes after he went out to go buy glue, and maybe he wasn't putting the glue on but, was just checking after 30 minutes to see if it was dry (I didn't see any glue in his hands where he looked like he was feeling the lamp to make sure the glue was dry) and before he put the shade on, the look on his face from 2:21-2:24 was like he was saying "oh good, it's dry, time to put the shade on." Unfortunately, maybe the lamp was too much broken that glue wasn't helping whether it was regular glue or super glue.

      Shea Raven That's okay. I sometimes make mistakes when I watch UA-cam videos. But yes, I can see a little bit that a reflection looks like he put tape on the lamp. I can somehow tell he put glue on the lamp and not tape since from 2:07-2:18 he looked like he was feeling the lamp after putting glue by checking to make sure it was completely dry and from 2:21-2:24 the look on his face was like "it finally dried, it's time to put the shade back on." Unfortunately, the lamp was broken too much that glue or super glue wouldn't help.

His mother whooped his ass for it, cause she saw him do it. A few days later, it shorted out and died. But I was able save the memory card. Shortly after, I put it back into the box it came in and I buried it out Into the woods. The boys mother apologized for what he did and offered to pay me about a hundred dollars to buy a new one, I said "no need. I have a Nintendo Wii." Which I bought a few months earlier, Cause Wii plays GameCube. The boy was a friend of my nephews and I don't think they keep in touch anymore cause a few months after, they moved to Pittsburgh. Afterwards, my nephew told me he was glad they left cause he said the kid stole something of his. Which makes the kid a troublemaker. He broke my GameCube and stole from my nephew, so there you have it.

    It was a curious tension beginning to build in the house. Kids can tell this. And one night, just before supper, the old man was in the kitchen. I was downstairs in the basement. My kid brother was in the john - he spent a lot of time in the john. My mother was dusting, and she was humming away. Radio on top of the refrigerator was playing. We had this radio: white plastic case, it had tape on it, and an airplane dial. It had a hum. Bing Crosby was always singing "Sweet Leilani." My mother was always listening to that. I remember asking my mom one day, "What's a sweet leilani, Mom?" She says, "You wouldn't understand." I never did.
    She's dusting and the radio's playing. It was just a day like any other day. When all of a sudden, from the living room, we heard this tremendous crash. Every one of us knew instantly. _Instinctively,_ man knows when his world is changed. It's like the minute that the first bomb landed that the Hiroshima-man instinctively knew nothing would be the same after that. There was this crash. And for one brief instant, there was a kind of an electric air and the old man suddenly in the kitchen heard it and he yelled, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT??"
    And I heard him run down the hall into the living room. I came up from the basement. My kid brother came running out of the john with his pants off. And there it was, spread out all over the floor: the old man's major award. And my mother stood there amid all the wreckage with her dust cloth. And he took one look at it and says, "My god. You broke it!"
    My mother said, "Yes. I'm sorry."
    He looked her right in the eye. It was the first time I'd ever heard him talk like this and he said, _"You broke it. I know why you broke it. Because you're *jealous!*"_
    She says, "Jealous? Jealous of what? Ridiculous lady's leg?"
    And he says, "No! You're jealous because *I won.* ... Where's the glue?"
    She says, "We're out of glue."
    And he says, "God dammit." And he ran out of the house, jumped in the car, and you could always tell the attitude of the old man at any given time by the way he drove the car. We had this fourth-hand Oldsmobile, an Oldsmobile Rocket 98. He stepped on that baby and then first you could feel the gravel hit the front of the house. He was gone.
    Ten minutes later he came back with two great big tubes of glue, the kind of glue that they used to glue together exploded locomotives. Then he squatted down at the kitchen table and he started to glue that thing together. And he never got it glued together. It didn't work.
    And finally, he got up. Walked out to the back porch and dropped the whole thing in the wastebasket. Came back and sat down and started to read the sport page. They never mentioned it again. But nothing was ever again the same in our family. Everything was changed after that.
