I give this pilot a solid 8.5. I thought it was really well done and it brings us back into the world of Dune, many years before the rise of Paul Atreides.
I feel like the lack of technological advancement is due to them forbidding computers all together, not just AI. Kinda reminds me of Lord of the Rings which never seems to advance no matter how many eras and millennia pass. I enjoyed the first episode. As a fan of what Villeneuve has done with the movies, I’m intrigued enough to see how things play out. Glad the visuals match as much as they can for a TV show. It’s not easy to fully match Greig Fraser’s cinematography, as seen in The Penguin which also did a pretty good job matching its universe.
Wait, so they can have all these spaceships, flying cars, holographic projectors, etc. without computers? ... I dunno, man. That sounds like Atlantis from Tentacolino being built without screwdrivers (because they were banned).
My theory, Desmond Hart was given a gift by the worm that made him an early version of the Kwisatz Haderach 10,148 years before Paul born to disrupt the Sisterhood, the early version of the Bene Gesserit. We know House Harkonen, House Carrino (The Emperor), and House Atreides all exist 10,000+ years into the future. How much can you make a personal shield change in 10,000 years if they work? I mean in the movies the Barrons shield was on his finger, Paul wore it on his palm, in this show it was a belt buckle, so the technology did get smaller.
Technically, all the Atreides, Harkonnens and Corrinos are descendent from the all the characters in this show with any of those last names. Between BG breeding and feudal politics, all the houses in the landsraad have interbred.
I lean towards Desmond being a Ghola. They do need to introduce Gholas and Face Dancers for the next films. So, we shall see. How he assassinated the Sister from across the galaxy means it wasn’t a psychic power…probably. So it could be an Ixian technology. This is an interesting show. The burning has to do with the visions, and again that makes me lean towards Ghola.
@@maggyfrog I did say that he was Ragnar Lothbrok. I also mentioned him being in Raised By Wolves. As well as him being in Warcraft and Baytown Outlaws just to name a few.
@@nupefromdaville my apologies I wrote this before I watched that part. Not sure if syntell has watched it before would be cool if you reacted it with him since there nice themes about moral and life in that show. Keep up the work!
We decided to have all the Pasty Harkonenn (because of the wonky Sun in Geidi Prime we saw in Dune) to become random diverse people. Otherwise, most stuff follows (precedes) the movies fairly well.
If you don't want too much talky-talky, this ain't for you then. Dune is all about politics and machinations behind the scenes. 'Talky-talky' is what makes Dune Dune. This is what makes shows like GoT great too. Not saying it is the same quality, but behind the scenes talky-talky is what makes these stuff great.
I think what he's saying is..the "talky talky" is not intriguing. GoT's politics was intriguing. This might have come first but the back and forth was meh at best.
Wasn't it? I found it really interesting with the world building. Surely not in the same level, but it wasn't bland or boring or meh imo@@believeume122
We know that the book was very much exposition overload, which is why it was seen as unadaptable. Also exposition is more acceptable in text because you don’t have the option of visual exposition. But Dennis showed that it is adaptable bc he reduced the exposition in my opinion and trusted the audience to enjoy the world he thrusted them in. This show in the first episode used his character like talking pieces. It made him boring 🥱. Also what is it with the extreme tonal shift when we get to the heir? Is this a space adult féodal drama or a teen drama. They should have made the choice before putting it on our tvs. They didn’t have to start with Valya killing Dorothea. We should have started 30 years in the future with them prepping for the princess’ arrival and more. We could discover what she did at another time in the series… Also making Valya “invent” the voice is 🤕 (dumb). Before you come from me, the specific trilogy that inspired this show wasn’t written by Frank Herbert. I have many more issues with that specific trilogy and the pilot of this show but I have said enough.
@@Sarahlancey But they are not completely adapting one book, they are taking many stories of the sisterhood to adapt it. I do not think any conversation made it boring and I am not one of those people who thinks only action makes a show interesting. For goodness sake, it was the first episode and they have to set things up and they did that well by introducing these characters. And what bloody teen drama? There was no teen drama. Putting it on our tvs? So a well done pilot with good worldbuilding is bad to you? I don't even know what you are pressed about here. And stop telling people how to structure a TV show. They should have definitely given us background on the machine war because that is the precurssor to what happens. And we will have flashbacks And yet another silly thing Sarah is mad about, what is wrong with Valya inventing the voice? This happened fucking 10,000 years before Dune 1, what is wrong with one of these characters inventing the voice? How is that fucking dumb? You have a problem with the book which they are not adapting in the entirety, go cry about the book. The pilot was not bad, none of what you said makes any sense
First off, you cannot compare the last 60 years of human to the rest of human history. We are in a technological revolution that will not last forever and only a few hundred years ago. throughout most of history, tech moves very slowly. If at all, we should not be surprised then that technology is the same, especially since that as seen in the show, technology is regulated, especially in regards to thinking machines.
The nightclub scene happens in the book too. They just didn't go too overboard with it which they should have. Frank Herbert often talks about people being on drugs. None of what he said was 'facts' lmao
I give her like a C. Because I think alot of people will not return to watch this. I'm interested and I would still just play it in the background while I multi task. They could have done way more with visions, quick camera angle changes, and eerie sounds to keep us captivated. It feels like it wasn't done with much passion. But I'll keep watching. FYI: they just finished a war with machines so there will be no technological growth.
cyberpunk is actually an RPG like D&D that came out back in 1988. It has just started to hit the mainstream more the past many years en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberpunk_(role-playing_game)

12:45 they have banned the technology and thinking machines, the world of Dune has stagnated in terms of technology. That is why it looks the same.

“What’s in the cloth” was unexpected and took me out completely! Lol
39:10 House Corrino rule the empire in this show, and in the two Dune movies. Mark Strong's character is the ancestor of Chris Walken's character

some great vibes around here. subscribed!
y'all gotta watch vikings the blue eye warrior is a awesome actor and the main actor on that show.
it's times like these that i'm reminded that vikings premiered a decade ago, and an entire batch of humans are yet to be made aware of its existence
We did notice who Travis Fimmel was

@Vince_scott thanks. I think he has watched Vikings. He may not have finished it. I finished Vikings and Vikings:Valhalla

I've seen raised by wolves and I totally agree with you Rakkel about fimmel's character
Sci-fi channel vibes
The way to pronounce the movie directors name: Denis = Deni (the s is silent) Villenueve (Villa -Nuvvah)
Villa-Nuvv*

The part they should have left out was the nightclub scene, too much NOT Dune.
