To me this scene was done brilliantly. The focus is not on dude getting torn apart, but by David's amazement with Creating New Life. Favorite scene in whole film.
But would evolution and natural selection make a head that shape? What’s the purpose of it? What’s the benefit? Is there a living creature that’s similar in anyway? The hammerhead shark comes to mind, bout their funky shaped heads help them scrape up sand from the oceans’ floors. One could say it’s a fictional creature and don’t think about it, but good sci-fi has good science in it.
I watched a video form Marvelous Videos explaining the biology of xenomorph's and they said that the shape of their head is related to the way they can shoot their second mouth at high speeds.
This is speculation, but it could be that it's packed with sensory organs. Stuff like electroreceptors, a bigger olfactory bulb, maybe even some kind of sensory system for changes in air density, like a biological version of Ripley's motion detector. Oddly shaped heads to accommodate extra sensory abilities aren't unheard of in nature. Just look at the Hammerhead Shark! Edit to clarify, since we both mentioned Hammerheads and I just didn't read good: Hammerhead sharks have better senses than other sharks, because of their heads. The extra space gives them more room for ampullae of lorenzini, which let them sense electrical impulses from things like your muscles and nerves. Plus, the positioning of their eyes on their heads gives them a full 360 degree range of vision. Hammerheads are Shark AWACS

Best chest bursted since Alien 3
If one is an Alien fan, it’s very easy to appreciate it.
It just burst because the hand is in the air. It’s the moment of its birth

@@englishcocoa I never understood the benefit of an ejecting mouth - but the idea behind it all is actually scientific in nature, which is cool.
