The only thing that actually failed was the engine, but at such low level that is quite a big enough of a problem by itself. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He was looking like he'd be short of the runway, so a gear up landing would be the right call. Then he realised he would just make the runway so gear down was the call, but the gear did not have time to lock. many WW2 airplane engines weren't built to last. they were mass produced for a war where planes didn't last long. I've heard they are designed for only about 300hrs of operations tops before the engine had to be replaced or swapped.

Unfortunately Sea Furys do have a bit of a history of landing gear being a pain and not locking down. Normally a couple tries will get it, but he didn't have that much time.
Given that the engine was blowing smoke I'd suggest there's more than the history of gear issues at play here, the gear is primarily hydraulic, and the hyds will be engine driven, so a beat up engine wont be doing a good job of keeping the hyd system pressurised, making the gear situation much more precarious.
I mean.... I don't think the sea fury had anything flight critical on it that was hydraulic, sure it had hydraulics, but they weren't flight critical, landing gear and maybe flaps, well you can fly without them, it just makes the transition between flying and not flying, or vice versa harder. You also have to remember that just because you see a hydraulic failure, such as the gear not coming down hydraulicly, doesn't mean that's the cause, the hyd failure can be a symptom. In this instance I'd say he lost the engine and was gliding in, since the hydraulic systems run from an engine driven hydraulic pump and these old warbirds rarely, if ever, had electric hydraulic pumps loss of the engine meant loss of the hydraulic pump, which meant when you use hydraulic systems you'd quickly loose hyd pressure and find yourself without hyds.
When I watch videos of warbirds in trouble like this, I cringe a little. However, when the outcome is like this on field and pilot walks away, I'm hopeful the plane will be restored and fly again.
This is a very skilled naval aviator. He left the gear until just prior to landing to ensure he made the runway. Unfortunately the gear failed to lock down. Still a great effort though as the aircraft was saved.
Sea Furys tend to not operate their landing gears properly at low rpm or an even failing engine due to hydraulic pressure going down. A wheels up landing in this case would've avoided further damage but the pilot obviously tried his best: If the undercarriage would've locked in down position he most likely could land the aircraft without a single scratch.
