  • Sump Pump for a French Drain is Key to proper discharge. You need a good 1/2 hp pump. Also you need a good Sump Basin or Pit to hold the pump.
Here are several examples of Good Sump Pumps and Sump Basins

Back Yard Flooding really can be solved. With good French Drain, and a good discharge, you can dry out any area. Whether you use, perforated pipe surrounded by gravel, with or with a fabric, or if you are using EZ Drain which is 4" perforated pipe surrounded by strong packing Styrofoam peanuts, or even if you are using hydroblox, you can move water and maintain a dry yard.
I know there are many different videos out there, but if you keep in mind, that all of them are doing the same thing, you can learn a lot. Basically, French Drain helps remove subsurface water. Catch Basins remove surface water run off.. The key is, discharge! Where are you going to send this water once you collect it?
Sometimes a sump pump is needed if there is not enough down hill flow or grade to let water run naturally through your pipes, but in all cases, you collect the water and discharge to day light.

I used to do quite a bit of contract work and installed my fair share of sump pumps. Love the way you break it down so simply. I hate to see people get gouged horribly because something like a sump pump seems so inaccessible to the average homeowner with no experience and even if this video doesn't instill the confidence to do it themselves at least it will educate some to demystify the process and not get ripped off

We hung our own shingle for crawlspace Encapsulations about 4 years ago. I feel like I owe money to Chuck Apple for everything I've learned. We are in the Know Kingsport/Bristol/Johnson City area and the surrounding service area has a population of one million. I'd drop everything we're doing to open an Apple Drain franchise ( I Think) lol. I've referred Apple up here more than once . Great videos

That "culvert pipe" looks like a single wall 10 or 12 inch version of the drain tile "sticks" I worked with in field drainage. You can get them from the same places that you can get the rolled 4 inch+ drain tile and in various diameters/lengths. I myself am using two pieces of 24 inch double wall pipe I perforated and covered in geofrabric on the sides and bottom to keep out silt/dirt to protect my sump pumps.

Love your videos and I want to help by mentioning the thermal conductivity of aluminum is about four times greater than of cast iron. I’m going to assume the cast iron pumps last longer running unsubmerged because of the better quality of internal components or it has more surface area to dissipate heat versus the smaller pump in your video. Im only speculating.

The reason the sewage pit lid has 2 holes is for the pump discharge, and a vent. And the smooth rim is so an air tight seal can be made so no sewer gas can escape, not so that debris can't get in.

Have you used the Liberty Pumps K001308 crawl space perforated basin? If not why. It’s much smaller but can fit through a 16.5” crawl space access. Very different design than the one you typically use.

Hi chuck. I love your videos and explanations. Thank you so much for the content. I hope you don’t mind if I ask you a question. We are first time home owners and made the mistake of buying a home without a drainage and irrigation system. Long story short we need French drains with a sump pump. One of the contractors is telling us that it will cost us 7,000$ for labor and parts to just install the sump pump with a pit. This does not include the French drains and the trenching for the drains. I feel like we are being swindled. The contractor says that is the normal going rate. Can we get your advice?

There needs to be more readily available sump pits that can hold more water, like a wider pit. Depth doesn't matter when the pump floats only have 6 inches of travel. You can put that out a mile down and it will still only pump 6 inches of water.

@Mike S , go to any supply house that sells water meters, meter boxes , sewer pipe, culverts etc and buy double wall corrugated pipe .it comes in a lot of diameters out to 36" and most sell it buy the foot so you can buy and bury the pipe vertically as deep as you can dig your hole. Pour 2 foot of washed drain rock in the bottom and then a concrete tile to set the pump on. These pipes are very rigid and designed to be placed in a ditch and covered with rock or dirt so water can pass through them under driveways but allow traffic to drive across so they will retain their shape after backfilling around the outside .You can cover them with cast iron manhole type lids sold at the same location

Depth does matter. My frost level is 30 inches so the pump needs to be down very deep so it doesn’t freeze

this cost too much. my drain is me make it myself. i dig a hole with 1m radius and 2.5 meter depth. i use frickin stone as a wall to hold the soik for not collapsing down. i use the mix of a clay, like the foundation of the concrete, but since my place got clay nearby, im using it to my heart content. i then find myself a log about 4m long with 10-12cm radius. i place it ontop of the hole i make. thats my foundation drain. its been 11 years, and i dont have any issue as leaking on top, smelly environment. nope, all was good.
