  • I'm giving away all of my secrets! In this video, I explain and describe how I (generally) learn and record my cover songs. I want to emphasize, however, that creating a formula (although useful) can easily put you in a rut. I hope this video can give you structure, but at the same time, it is important that you continue to experiment and stretch the boundaries. Never settle!

I continue to be amazed by your musical knowledge and talent! As for me, the older I get, the less I desire to do covers of other people's music. I just get more enjoyment out of writing my own songs. The drawback is, most people want to hear songs they are already familiar with. As far as writing things down in musical notation, I did that with the first one or two songs I wrote back in the 90s. After that, I just started making recordings and didn't bother writing anything down. Of course, back in the old days, I was writing songs with lyrics and vocals, which made writing things down more important. At the very least, Id' have to write out the lyrics and chords. Now that I only record instrumentals, I don't bother writing things down, other than some notes in the recording software about which guitars, tunings and patches I used, the BPM of the drum track, etc.

It's true. I do get tired of doing covers so often, which is why I'm trying to incorporate a few more originals. And yes, I often procrastinate notating. However, it's good if you ever want to sell sheet music at any point.

Heck yeah, this is awesome Sarah!
I've been doing some ear training and trying to transcribe short songs, but this is really helpful and a God send right now!

This is a fun video, and a nice window into your process. :) You get GREAT results, and I really admire your approach to rhythm without drums. I would have never guessed that you're working around a weakness with regard to playing drum parts, just that you've found a different expressive language for creating rhythmic elements which doesn't rely on the thing most of us use as our "go to" for rhythm. This is a great guide for folks out there wanting to give music video creation a try. :)

Thanks!! I'm glad I can slightly mask this weakness. Limitations force greater creativity. Perhaps that is what's happening here. Haha

Hello! I'm 16 and I had to stop going to college because my chronic illnesses got quite bad but I've always loved music. So I've decided to learn the cello and music theory and I'm loving it. It is quite difficult though because I'm in a lot of pain so I can never practice for very long. My cello teacher is telling me that I have to keep my right wrist relaxed and I'm really struggling. Do you have any tips for staying relaxed while playing? Thank you! You are a wonderful musician xx

    • @sarahjoyrecordings

Breathing and moving are what really help me stay relaxed. It's also important that you practice slowly and not learn any pieces that are too far above your level.
