      Thats the big problem with MtG now. Every card has to either win the game after one turn or be a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1. High power formats end up stifling creative deckbuildibg instead of promoting it.

    You had lethal at 7:15 by animating Mishra's Foundry and casting Volt Charge. Not guaranteed, admittedly; if your opponent had instant speed removal you'd be back to square 1, but you wouldn't be in a worse position than just doing nothing.

    I do think the no-mountain hand was a mull and not a keep, but more importantly, I think the deck has too many colorless lands in general. Yes they can be useful and you definitely like the blast zone with all will be one, but you just lose when you don't have enough red sources. I would consider going down to 3 blast zone and 2 foundry, and dropping the sokenzahn too, for 4 more mountains.

    • @totalcoward
      @totalcoward Рік тому +4

      I think the math actually backs up mulliganing pretty heavily in that instance. Like Seth was already at a disadvantage with Soldiers being in the play, so by taking a 50/50 shot at drawing the land he needed to do anything in the game he’s essentially halved his chances of winning. And considering the alternative was to ship the hand, draw a new 7, and get rid of the worst card in it I don’t really do much to defend the decision to keep there. Like sure if he went mountain into mountain then he’s in great shape since he can cast Brotherhood’s End, but those odds are even worse than the 50/50 Seth calculated

    • @weirddan455
      @weirddan455 Рік тому +2

      Yeah, that was a bad keep. At least in a 2/3 color deck if you're missing a color, you probably still have other cards you can cast in your hand. All colorless lands is a non-starter. I also think there's just too many colorless lands in the deck. You want ~18 red sources to cast your 1RR spells on curve (Chandra and Brotherhood's End) and with Koth you probably want even more so you have enough Mountains to kill large creatures reliably. Utility lands also have diminishing returns. If you too many, you're not going to have the mana to use them all.

    Honestly I think Koth is easier to understand and functions better when you consider the +2 as "+2: Draw a card"? Removal on the downtick is really good in mono red, the fact the uptick puts him at 6 and puts cards in hand for your looting effects is really nice, and if you have a board you can ult super quickly and use the uptick to fuel the ult? Not the most powerful walker ever, but definitely not bad!

    I've been playing Koth in Explorer and loving it! No AWBO, but I get some extra mileage out of it by grabbing Into the Fire to wheel consistently (which is further aided by fetching up mountains) and topping things off with Yidaro and Fiery Emancipation on the high end.

  • @bartoffer
    @bartoffer Рік тому +26

    I tinkered around with this idea before, without even All Will Be One. In Game 1, for example, when they're at 5, there was also lethal with play AWBO 2 -> volt into proliferate buster = 5 damage. When the opponent was down to 3, you could pay 7 to put 3 counters on blast zone.
    It's surprisingly versatile as a result of interactions like this. And the power of Koth+ on four, volt and ult on five can sometimes feel like cheating. Light Up The Night is a crazy good card at times (hits thalia for just 2 mana) and can turn Koth's high loyalty into an out-of-nowhere spike, and torch breath in the sideboard can relieve a lot of Ux tempo pressure.

    The fact that you only need to proliferate Koth once (alongside the initial +2) to ultimate is huge and something I think many of us overlooked initially. I seem to loosely recall some other walkes that ultimated 2 turns after playing, but I'm also recalling that either their ult wasn't a standalone game winner (I think original Garruk might have overrun two turns after playing him?), or their increase ability was +2 so proliferate wouldn't substitute for a whole one (Ugin I think fits here - 9 on the first turn, 11 on the second, then ult - though Ugin would actually work as he only need 3 loyalty above start, so the uptick and a proliferate is perfect).
    Basically, going to have to have a look through the list of walkers now to see which ones can be done the turn after playing them now, and if their ult is good enough to build around. Fun times. :)

    (6-mana Chandra is my favorite Historic Brawl deck, so I play big red control a lot) Honestly, Staff of Compleation looks pretty bad, even when it's good. I think swapping them (at least in the main deck) for another Mountain and either a 3rd Chandra or another removal spell would be better. Maybe it comes in against control, but in any matchup where the opponent is doing damage, you can't expect multiple activations. Unless you curve into Koth and they can't remove counters, so you get the turn-5 emblem, the staff is either win-more, or you could have achieved the same result with another Light Up the Night, which doubles as a serviceable removal spell against aggro.

    imo the keep at ~23:32 was fine. i probably wouldn't have kept it (because really you want to draw a mountain on your first draw or else it's probably too slow for soldiers when they're on the play, and the probability of drawing it on 1 draw was too low for my to want to risk it), but i don't think it was an unreasonable keep.
    that said, i do think it is a bit of a fault in deck construction to have so many colorless lands that you run into this problem. especially with koth in the deck. and wanting to cast brotherhood's end on 3 post board.

    I think with a roughly 50% chance of not drawing a red source with your opponent already having an advantage, keeping a hand without any red mana is absolutely the wrong line. Like let’s hypothetically say your chances of winning against soldiers on the play is 60/40 in favor of opponent. By keeping a hand with a 50% chance of not doing anything by turn 3 you’ve essentially halved your chances of winning, taking the odds from 60/40 to 80/20. Those are awful odds. Especially when the alternative is to draw a new hand of 7, get rid of the worst card in it, and having the chance to play your cards. Some of which can be 3 for 1s or 5 for 1s

    At 25:00 in regards to the greedy keep, I think you're underselling the downside of not drawing a red source -- that is, you do *literally nothing* for 2-3 turns. If not having removal kills you, letting an aggro deck have 2 turns for free is just as bad.
    Meanwhile, if you go to six, you might be behind on resources (which you already are when you flounder for two turns with a grip full of cards you can't play), but you can also get an almost as good hand that doesn't just flounder waiting on a red source. The London Mulligan is powerful; use it.

    I don’t like “hoping to draw a land” because you’re just stuck if you don’t. Regardless of the probability, I don’t like being in top deck mode essentially from turn 0 on

    Keep trying to tap and hold on cards to read them, like that will actually do anything

    Dragonspark Reactor or Geistflame Reservoir plus proliferate gives the deck some additional inevitability.

    25:25 Didn't you guys have a podcast about consistency in one's mana base? According to that you wouldn't have kept that hand.

    Funny enough, in match 3 game 1, you didnt even have to tick up your blast zone to get the last point of damage:
    You just had to proliferate their Restoration of Eiganjo
    All Will be One only cares that YOU are the one putting counters on permanents, not whose permanents are getting the counters

    In Match 2 you show us the probability. Wouldn't you look at the hypergeo prob instead of the cdf? It seems with every draw you are extracting from the population size. I am not sure and that is why I am asking.

    The one red proliferate spell is too much for me.
    I would pair this with Green(three good pro-s) or Blue(GREAT interaction w/ pro effects) for a mythic-tier build.

    My experience with this deck: 45% of the time, lose to aggro. 45% of the time, lose to Invoke Despair wiping your board. 10% of the time, do cool things.

    I'll always love your videos, but I mostly play bo1 these days. It would be really awesome if you would add a bo1 version of some of these decks. Or just talk about it at the end or something.

    The issue with this deck is that it's all in on All Will Be One. If that's gone, the deck kind of needs to be ahead to win. Then, if that's the case, you wouldn't need All Will Be One. I think the deck needs something extra.
