What Happens When a Spinning Basketball is Thrown Off a Dam!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лип 2015
- While at the Gordon Dam doing our World Record Basketball Shot we decided to see how back spin affected a basketball when dropped from 140m up. The results were way crazier than we expected!

Imagine going for a swim then seeing a random flying basketball speed past you
Then hit you then u pass out 💀
The people: Hey look you're flying!
The ball: This isn't flying! This is falling, with style!
"It's truly, truly been a roundabout path... Thanks Gyro."
I'm super late but you are amazing.

I wish you guys had the guy in the canoe recording so you can get the perspective of how it was flying down there.
Good call! We really weren't that prepared for anything that special to happen so we only had a few cameras going. Otherwise we would have had a lot more!!
+How Ridiculous You can always do it again ;)
+iWaffling for YOUR information it's called both it just depens on what country you live in.EXAMPLE New Zealand and some some parts in Australia it's called soccer but if your in the UK it's football.

No, it's Marcus Effect.
GrinFlash lmao can’t tell if ur joking or not
Thanks gonna go research

The reason the ball makes this movement is because it produces lift due to the spin. The spin accelerates the velocity of the air above the ball more than on the bottom, creating a lower pressure zone at the top. This pulls the ball toward the low pressure zone which is forward when throwing the ball straight down (like on this video) and upward in a horizontal movement. Google spinning circle cylinder for more clarification.
"The Weather Channel" website brought me here. Awesome video!
lol just remembered this video in a dream and all I have to say is: "Great now do it again but jump off the dam with a front flip and see how far you'll spin!

Great experiment! Unfortunately not as far as we expected. I would be curious how far it can go if you spin the ball with the most possible strengh. =)
Bro. Already saw this. It was on Veritasium.
Eli Butterfield Bro. Guess where Veritasium got it from.
It skipped! :) They skipped a basketball! That takes some skills.

This video is the first time I had seen (or heard of) the Magnus effect. It was a couple of years ago, and I thought it was interesting and left it at that. I recently rediscovered How Ridiculous and I am enjoying their videos quite a bit, but I would not have given them a second glance if they hadn't included this little bit of science. Greats!
I kept seeing this vid on Facebook, followed by loud moaning
The sound when the ball hit the water is so satisfying.
This is the first video I ever saw from How Ridiculous. Its crazy how they are still doing stuff like this!
This must be how Galileo felt when he experimented with Gravity!

My basketball coach back in the 70s taught me to shoot free-throws underhanded, and explained that they go straighter when you do that. I believe Rick Barry shot that way as well.
I’m seeing this in my recommendation just now and I live in Tassie and I was there a few weeks before you posted this video aha
they should have spun one the other way. like a rifle bullet.

cety so are you saying that to yourself
That probably isn’t coriollis (as a lot of people in the comments say), but Bernoulli, or another external factor.
I’ve made the calculations to get what would the angle be between what we expect (an straight line to the surface) and what we would get with the coriollis acceleration.
Set a_0= -g j (This is the acceleration not taking into account coriollis)
Then, we calculate the coriollis acceleration of a mass that it is at the same time accelerating (g). Let’s see if I can explain myself.
Coriollis acceleration = -2W X V (Where W is the spin vector of the earth)
And you calculate:
î j k.
0. 0. 72.72*10^(-6)
0. -gt. 0.
You multiplied by the scalar (-2) and you get that the coriollis acceleration is
-1.426*10^(-3) î. (We already ser that it is sooooo small, but someone could thing, well, 150 meter are a lot, therefore it should desviate a lot )
Once we have this we have that the acceleration of the mass , taking into account coriolis should be :
a_c=-gt j - 1.426*10^(-3)t î
You integrate this function 3 times in order to get the position function and we get that
û_c= (-g t^2)j/2 -(1.426*10^(-3)t^3)/6
You put t=5,53 s. (The time that something at 150m needs to reach the ground)
And you get the position vector.
The angle would be 0.01 degrees. Or 266.68•10(-6) rad.
In other words, the body has only been deviated by 0.04 meter to the right ( î axis)
this calculations are not taking into account the air friction, but as you can see that would only make the acceleration be even less. In other words, in the video we can see some what is probably the result of aerodynamic forces.
My man you got the entire fucing answer
does the magnus effect the acceleration of the ball, like does it cause the ball to fall slower?
i succ
hi
topito :D
Having recently arrived in the viewership of HR it's so weird to hear such a subdued voice. I'm so used to the shouting. 😂
The shot when you dropped it without the spin is actually an example of the coreolis effect, so you technically had two effects in one video.
+ANDROUMAC1 Coriolis effect wouldn't have such an effect over such a short distance
+ANDROUMAC1 No! The bullshit coriolis effect only has a 3 inch variable at a thousand yards. That went way farther than that could account for. It's due to the curve of the dam and air. You could get that ball depending on wind to fall to the left. When it went straight it went further and did not go left or right. It's spin and lack there of. the spin made the ball go way forward. Just like in golf. No one ever figures the coriolis effect. Your target would move and it would be to late.
In their original clip they showed themselves spinning the ball with both front and back spin. They have edited that part out to make the theory work in the video. They did both front and back spin and both went over the lake when the front spin should have curved towards the dam. Creative editing will make them famous but science makes them FOS.
When we were attempting the world record, we actually threw one win some forward spin and it got sucked back into the Dam, just the same as a ball with top spin dips down in tennis/soccer etc. If you watch the world record shot you'll see the ball doesn't take off and go nearly as far even with a slight amount of back spin, however it did go in the hoop so it was still great!
Not to say that the hoop shot was not amazing, which it was, I was just noting that in the first clip that I saw both drops with spin, backward and forward, went out over the lake.
Darwin Simmons Why would a ball with forward spin go out over the lake? Scientifically speaking, the forward spin should get sucked into the dam, just as the original video poster observed.
In the first clip that was posted, as stated in my earlier claim, both forward and backward spin went over the lake. That was my point. However, as restated by you, the ball with forward spin should have curved into the dam. However, in this current, edited clip, they do not show where they dropped the ball with forward spin, and even fail to mention forward spin. They also edited in showing the person in the boat because so many people were commenting on whether or not they recovered the balls that were dropped.
The point being is that it was edited to make their point work for the demonstration by removing part of the data from the footage.
Darwin Simmons Even if the video was edited, why would forward spin make it go out over the lake ? That makes no sense scientifically.
Dude Perfect beat you guys, not to make you cry or anything, but, yeah.
watching the Weather Channel live right now and they used a clip from this video and shouted you out lol

Thanks for the cool vid! Same principal as hitting a golf ball and giving it back spin or hooking it...
That second one was crazy lol
watch this vid for my science class! we loved it!
Dang. Who knew that adding a bit of spin can dramatically change the ball's path? Landing the world record shot must have been a lot harder than I thought (as if throwing a ball into a hoop 100+ meters wasn't hard enough).
I watch a lot of the newer How Ridiculous vids but my physics professor linked this one as an example for us since we can’t do any irl labs cause of Covid and online learning and as soon as I saw his description of the vid saying “a guy dropping a basketball off a dam” I was like “is it How Ridiculous??” and it was lol
Awesome guys great job
Damn this video was insane!
Moment of a force we call it torque.
One of the first videos I ever watched
Cool. Good to see they did recover the balls.
1:09 the dude on the radio was so pissed lol
I'm Australian too :D
Finally, someone is using metres and not feat!
Make the vertical axis horizontal and you can think of it like baseball. A four-seam fastball is thrown with backspin so the seams give it a slight rising action. A knuckleball is thrown with as little spin as possible, which has led to one of its names being "The Dancer." Only one MLB pitcher can throw a knuckleball (R.A. Dickey), because it's hard for coaches to teach, hard for pitchers to master, hard for a catcher to keep a glove on, but even harder for a batter to make contact on. That's all due to the ball just wafting along at the whim of thermodynamics.
Now, if he had put topspin on the ball, a la a curveball, and thrown it outward away from the dam, it would have curved back towards the dam and either lightly skimmed off, or would just roll down the wall.
All of this gives me ideas of how we could spin an asteroid to make it bounce off our atmosphere instead of falling on us.
