My thoughts before watching: I've had a D750 since they came out and have kept my previous D600 as a spare body (which came in handy when I dropped my 750 and had to send it in for recalibration). Tremendous job as always MH. This is a splendid upgrade to the D750! The biggest difference between Mirrorless and DSLR is size and that factor is narrowing, DSLR can be smaller and Mirrorless are getting bigger. There is room for both systems.

What I like is that you are taking your time to talk clearly which is not often the case. I am not a native English speaker so the way you're talking is very important to me. Many thanks for all your time. I own Nikon D610 D750 & Z6 and FUJIFILM X-T2 + X-PRO2. Regards from Belgium ;-)
Thank you, Maarten. Hope you get better soon (sounds like you have a cold). Also hope you get a chance to do a deeper exploration of the video features on the D780. I am hoping there is an improvement in dynamic range in N-LOG.
Excellent review along with very useful settings and tips (without any bull) - one of the best I've seen in yonks. Quick question on Video - did you use an external mic / record ? and did it pick up any lens whirling / winning as it kept / reacquired focus.
Glad you enjoyed it, always nice to hear from an appreciative viewer. I did use an external mic (I only ever use internal mics for guide track or background ambience). Yes, the lens motors (on this lens anyway) are loud enough to be picked up by the internal mics.
After much mulling-over and procrastination, I took on-board the details that you give in this video and purchased a good-quality used Nikon D780. I am particularly impressed by the improved video-autofocus. I am a Nikon D750 owner and the D780 is a big-step forward. Many thanks for your very informative videos !!
I bought the D780 and love it. It is by far my favorite Nikon (unless/until a D880 might be released). I do have one question - where can I purchase the viewing device you show that provides an "optical viewfinder" to see the rear screen of the camera? I'd like to order one, but I'm having trouble finding what you used. I hope you find this reply, and can help me.
The viewer I used was the Kamerar VF4. I don’t think that those are made any longer, as the link I used to provide in answer to this question no longer works.
I am thinking about going full frame as I now have a better understanding of photography. My trouble is which choice should I make. I quite like the d780 as it is an improvement over the d750 and nikon always knew what they were doing with dslrs. On the other hand the future is in the mirrorless side but I am not sure yet about the current options. Either way it would mean investing a large amount of money to achieve this switch and I am not sure which way I should go. Any insights? I would really like to hear your thoughts.
First, I'd ask what advantage you expect full frame will provide. Then to ask which camera features are most important to you. Although I've not yet had the chance to review it, I suspect the Z6 II (although it will require new lenses) may be your best investment for the long term.
@@MaartenHeilbron regarding the advantage I’d gain is that full frame sensors are best suited for astrophotography and for landscape photography. Ideally a z7 would be preferable but its price is off limits. With the bigger mp count I would be able to print bigger than I currently print. However the current options on the mirrorless side are just ok. Nikon hasn’t come up with any outstanding products yet the way it did with the D850. The z6ii and z7ii offer marginal improvements that should have been issued with the cameras in the first place. Also the new lenses are quite expensive but I guess with an ftz adapter you can use the old trusted nikon lenses. I guess I should wait to see if anything better comes up later on. So far I am getting a half baked feeling from nikon regarding the mirrorless offers.
@@marieta.s For astrophotography in particular, you're right to identify full frame as providing an advantage - both in terms of detail and low light. I'm not sure I agree with you on the mirrorless models - I think the Z7 (haven't reviewed the II yet) is a pretty spectacular camera - certainly the equal of the D850 in terms of image quality, and in some cases, depending on the lens, the superior, particularly for small pin points of light in the darkness.
Hi Marteen, thanks for the nice and detailed review. One thing, at 12:00 you stop the shutter speed at 30sec. As far as I know it goes to 900sec. Am I wrong?
Thank you Martin for the wonderful review, one thing I wanted to ask about video bit rate , you said somewhere in the video that it can shoot 10 bit video.. Now is that internal or do we need a ninja v ?!
I did not. If you feel the images are over-exposed, have you tried using a diffusing filter? Pointing the flash a little higher, or a little to one side of your subject? Have you adjusted the flash compensation? There must be lots of ways to compensate for this.
Thanks for your kind words. That would be interesting. Clearly the D780 is faster, but I was not able to have them side by side to test the exact difference.
Very interesting and useful review, Maarten! Your reviews are usually the first ones I look for on some new gear. Keep up the good work. BTW, I find gin & tonic to be a grand cure-all for most anything that ails a person. If one doesn't help, have a second or even a third.
Nice that you let us hear how noisy or quiet the different shutter modes are. But did you really? To me, apart from the silent mode, they all just sounded unpleasantly noisy compared to my 90D. But then I do tend to use it with a lens attached which I'm sure dampens the noise considerably. I assume Nikon users do the same. Speaking of the 90D, did I miss your review? I can’t find one. By the way, I think candlelight is about 1500˚ Kelvin. So the only way to get there is with a custom WB. (Or, as I did in the film era, with stacked KB filters adding up to KB 35 which will degrade the image quality as well as swallow at least four and a half stops of light).
Yes, I agree, it's only worthwhile on a comparative basis. I'm really just poking fun at silent. And it is a fairly noisy shutter. With a lens attached? Interesting! Have not had the opportunity to review the 90D. Canon Canada is being somewhat unresponsive. I'll keep at it. Yes, in that range (about 1800 is what I usually get) Not all custom WB (not one of Nikon's strong suits) can get a good reading that low., so sometimes just best to go with 2500 (that is the usual bottom end of K settings) and accept that the difference makes it look like candle light. Too white and it's not right for the tone/mood.
@@MaartenHeilbron Yes, I agree that perfectly neutral colours will ruin the candlelight atmosphere. But I prefer a neutral starting point and then tweak it from there. 2500K is too red for me.
I wonder if Nikon plans a D880, as in a D850 that gets a similar treatment as the D750 got. I for one prefer F mount until Nikon offers a better selection of Z lenses, and don’t mind the larger body size, but do really appreciate the improved live-view focus features. I do like an EVF, but not so much that I’m willing to live with a limited lens selection unless I want to tote the FTZ adapter. I also appreciate the ability to continue to use Nikon’s plethora of stellar lenses from past decades, which the F mount provides. Yes, I think I could be happy with a D880.
I was hoping this would be priced the same if not less than the Z6 (since I rent Z6 with G lenses anyway) but shocked to find the body-only D780 surpassing even the Z6+FTZ+64GB XQD+24-70mm f4 S Lens combo price at my local store! Nikon just doesn't want to challenge the A7III 😒
I have tried. There is no media relations or office in Canada. After dealing with their US office for over a year, with occasional replies like "not right now, I'll get back to you in a few weeks", I've given up on Pentax.
Maarten, great review. I have a Nikon d7200. I want to upgrade to full frame and I want to stay DSLR. Interested in your opinion of my upgrade thoughts.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for the reply. I've been wanting to go to full frame for a while now. I've had great photos with the D7200 but am hoping the jump to full frame will provide some new possibilities. I know the lenses are important and I'll have to work on getting some quality glass. I did go ahead and order one and I hope I love the camera. Not patient enough to rent first so it's time to dive in. Thanks again.
The last gasp for survival from DSLR companies, if they still want this product line to thrive, are a couple features. Number one in my list is IBIS. Number two is Full frame DSLR in the D5600/T7i body size complete with dials in the front and back, with a hard, and very light aluminum body. Third, All the mirrorless features such as eye autofocus, and at least 8fps in live view mode. Swing to side tilting screen should be standard, and battery grip port should also be standard.
Hi Maarten! Thank you very much for the great review. Do you think that the D780 is the perfect camera to upgrade from DX to FX? What do you think about the 24-120? Greetings from Germany :)
Thanks for the kind words. Not sure it's the perfect camera for an upgrade, unless I knew what you felt your were missing in your previous camera. I haven't had the chance to the use the 24-120.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for your answer. At the moment I'm using just a entry DSLR (with pro lenses). So I think that the D780 would be an good upgrade.
@@MaartenHeilbron Hi Maarten, I would like to get a better AF, a better ISO performance and more settings/options in the camera. Although the D780 has a better picture quality than my D3500. With telelenses the ergonomic of the D3500 is not the best.
I am a first time viewer of your UA-cam channel, and I have subscribed. I enjoyed your breakdown of the d780 -- lots of informative and relevant information. I would like to make one suggestion. You tend to skip from one shooting menu to another which makes your presentation a bit difficult to follow. For future videos, you might want to stay with one menu at a time.
Thanks for the kind words and the subscription. First, it is a review, not a tutorial, and I tend to group the settings into topics using a task-oriented approach. The concept of just walking through the menu time by item - even though it seems to make sense at a high level - is not really interesting to me. If that's what you need - there's the manual which is organized in that manner.
Thanks for reviewing D780. It will help me decide if Im getting a unit. How do you focus or what mode, if you take the camera in vertical orientation and eyes of the subject is beyond the focusing area. Camera is NOT in live view. I'm use to take photos the old fashion way - in the viewfinder. Any tips. I usually hit and miss on this.
I'm not sure by what you mean "beyond the focussing area". I would use the centre focus point and use the focus with a soft press, compose and snap method.
@@MaartenHeilbron I meant if you are composing your shot in vertical way, in your view finder you are limited to focus within the focusing area of the view finder. What if the eyes of your subject is beyond that area. sometimes its in focus but sometimes its not. Do you have any tips in focusing accurately? Thank you in advance
Thanks for that beautiful review. One point I am confused. You are saying (12.06) shutter speed from 1/8000 to 30 seconds. Then bulb and timer comes. But on paper it says that D780 has shutter speed up to 900 seconds. Would you please explain that point, how it works up to 900 seconds ?
Sorry, I didn't include the extended shutter speeds which are available in manual and activated as custom setting D6. When On, that allows settings from 60 seconds up to 15 minutes.
Just upgraded from a D3300. Havent taken any pics yet charging the battery and watching vids going over the manual. This is going to be such a mega upgrade lol
@@MaartenHeilbron it will be cost too much i think, Z6 ii is 350$ more expensive than d780 in my country and this is without the cost of adapter.. I love my Sigma Arts lenses and don't wanna shoot without them:)
Thanks. Very thorough. Still leaning towards purchasing a Z6... but - we shall see. (Still utilize the pop-up flash as a trigger for CLS but notice the 780 doesn't have one... too bad).
This is just the review I was looking for. I've been considering the D780 as an upgrade to my D750. Initially I was leaning towards the Z6II, but having to get the FTZ adapter and not being sure if my non Nikkor glass is fully supported, I came back to considering the D780. Also, and despite the smaller coverage area, I'm well used to how the AF works over the viewfinder when shooting action, usually motorsport. Also, the AF in liveview will be a great improvement for my tripod/landscape photography. Your video really helped to assure the assumptions I had coming from some 3 ou 4 extensive reviews in written form. Thank you. 👍
Looks a very capable camera if you shoot F Mount and don't want to migrate to mirrorless. But why no battery grip Nikon? Thanks for the detailed and informative review Maarten.
Thank you for the informative video, but I have a question if I may ask,... Right now I own a D3500 and D7200 with 3 DX lenses (18-55, 18-105, 70-300mm) and 2 FX lenses (150-600 and 50mm 1.8G) but I’m planning on upgrading my camera soon, but I can’t decided between getting the Z6ii or D780. They look both awesome for me and have both advantages but I can’t decide between the two, what would you get?
I unfortunately dropped my D7200 and insurance paid for the D780. It’s a big step up but you can still use the DX lenses. The sensor is much bigger so you get a lot more detail in your photos and the 4K video means your videos will be much better. It’s taking me a while to get to know the camera, but it has so many great features. It’s definitely worth the upgrade and it’s a pro camera so you’ll be able to see that there’s a reason for the label; it gives you the best of the 7 series cameras as well as the Z series. A great purchase.
I know the D780 is not as capable as the D500/D850 in terms of focus tracking, particularly for wildlife/bird photographers. However, I read that the camera has some D5 focus algorithms in it, so I assume it is a capable focusing camera. I cannot find one review where someone has used it or tested it against a D500/D850--how do YOU think it stacks up to these cameras for dealing with wildlife/birds?
The video photo mode is good for shooting kids or very fast very unpredictable subjects especially if you have good light or studio continuous lighting. You can fire off frames and extract sharp stills while filming at a high shutter speed. This allows you to shoot both stills and videos simultaneously especially for the baby or pet photographer which is a good photography business. You have the ability to deliver both video and stills with just one camera one operator. Think Santa, Halloween, Easter, School, and other themed shoots. If you need the highest megapixel great, the option is there but let's be honest 4mp, 8mp, 10mp is more than enough for a high volume consumer business. 36mp stills won't net you more money, just more data storage and you don't have to shoot raw. (A photographer who knows lighting doesn't need raw especially in controlled environments. Now wildlife in low light that's a different story). Want true efficiency, shoot kelvin and batch edit at the end (don't believe the raw is for adjust white balance in post nonsense, I can adjust white balance in PS just like my raw files, know your software and you shouldn't be off by more than 2stops in highlights or shadows, if you are you may want to turn on P mode) I'd been trying to figure out why Nikon keeps these video settings. Well I think it's b/c they simply know their buyers. They aren't selling to cinematographers b/c that's not their market. However they do specialize in stills photography especially portraits, sports and wildlife and if you're running a small photo business being able to shoot straight out of camera is a god send. You may think you need more than an 8mp file and maybe you do however 8mp is plenty for 20x30 size prints if needed. Added benefit of a short video reel and you have a thriving business model that is both fast, reliable but also minimalistic. Nikon seems to be who they think they are instead of playing games with its consumers like Canon and Sony. They have kept most of their core the same across the board so photographers can more easily sync other cameras especially when shooting as a team or in a production evironment. You could have a D850, D5300, Z6, D4s, D500, P1000 and sync all those cameras to shoot a video production and sync them to shoot photography at an event and get repeatable results in quality from both video and still. As I watch the brands more and more I'm beginning to understand Nikon especially better and why they choose to omit certain options ie 4K 60p which is only available in two Z series II bodies. You could literally run a broadcast studio with these bodies where lens noise isn't an issue even in the studio with the babies or pets. If you setup your studio or space to have an external microphone, not a shotgun mic, you're not running and gunning. But a lavalear mic, boom mic or simply being at a distance from your subject/microphone ie stage play, sports event, interview, etc. F mount lens noise won't be an issue (some F mount glass is silent). Watching this video I had sort of a revelation and revaluation of all these brands and what/who they are marketing toward. Nikon no longer produce cameras below 20mp. The D4s and Df were the last high-end bodies to shoot under 20mp.
Thanks for making some interesting observations. If that's Nikon's thinking, they could do a little more to take advantage of it - the way Panasonic does with their 4K burst modes (that are really video files). I trust that you are a working photographer experienced in these topics.
@@MaartenHeilbron Photographer yes, still learning video. Have some experience in broadcast (frankenstein broadcast system at my old church 🤯) They basically got scammed into buying incorrect broadcast equipment and asked me to figure it out. I recently got back into videography but only have my Df so I just frankensteined it into a video camera. I'm in the market for a new video camera. Not sure if Nikon allows HSS to strobes while using Live Frame Grab. None of my current clients care about print so 2mp is all I need these days b/c they just upload to instagram and websites.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks. I remember the d750 viewfinder to be a little dark and not as good as the d850 one. So I was wondering if they have improved it.
Great review, but one thing is overrated: the weight of a Z6ll with 24-120/4 is only 125 grams less than a D750 with 24-120/4. And for the D780 its maybe 200 grams. Weight is no reason to switch to mirrorless full frame imo.
That was true for some early APS-C mirrorless cameras. Physics being physics, by the time you’re dealing with full frame bodies and lenses, the difference is minimal. Agreed, weight is no longer a primary rationale.
@@MaartenHeilbron yes, that's why I (and many others) have a Fuji X System next to Nikon FX and will keep both for the different experiences / use cases. Thanks! Cheers from Switzerland!
Hey Maarten, thanks for the review! One of the biggest drawbacks to using the D750 for sports was its buffer. If I understand correctly - the D780 is limited at 100 shots per burst, but how fast does the buffer clear after those 100 shots? Can you simply take your finger off the shutter for a brief moment, then hit it again for another 100?
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. With the V90 card I was using, the buffer cleared very quickly - seconds. With a U3 (V30) it's not nearly as fast.

Many thanks for all your time. I own Nikon D610 D750 & Z6 and FUJIFILM X-T2 + X-PRO2. Regards from Belgium ;-)

I am torn between a Nikon Z6ii and D780! If you were supposed to pick one of the two, which one would be?
I am using a D5100 (APS-C) for last 9 years.
I would take the Z6II without hesitation.
I always enjoy your unique and very informative reviews on cameras especially Nikon reviews as that's what I shoot, excellent thanks again.
Great to hear, thanks for taking the time to comment with your kind words.
Excellent Review Maaarten, very complete and didactic! Thank you so much
Glad you liked it! Although, in my experience didactic is not often thought of as a positive attribute.
Great video. Thanks so much. How does the Nikon d780 hold up to Canons 5Dmk4 in low light and overall image quality?
The larger sensor usually wins these kinds of questions - but it is subjective.
Thanks for this video! This is from a d750 owner thinking of upgrading..but I'll MISS my popup flash! :)
Buy an external flash - even if it's a small and expensive one - you'll be so much happier.

Great review. I enjoy your reviews even if I can't afford to purchase the camera. I like your relaxed but extensive presentation.
Always a pleasure to read kind words from my viewers. Appreciated!
Thank you today I bought a d78- and a sigma F1.4 DG I as between the 580 and this model. Great review.

Are the SD 500 and SB 700 Nikon flashes compatible with the D780. I just bought a 780 and your video was helpful. This was my first full frame DSLR.
They should be. I have not tried those.
Hi Marteen, thanks for the nice and detailed review. One thing, at 12:00 you stop the shutter speed at 30sec. As far as I know it goes to 900sec. Am I wrong?
That's as slow as it can be set in M. Longer durations are available in timer and bulb. I should have mentioned those are limited to 15 minutes.

Thank you Martin for the wonderful review, one thing I wanted to ask about video bit rate , you said somewhere in the video that it can shoot 10 bit video..
Now is that internal or do we need a ninja v ?!
Yes, that capability requires an external recording, like the Ninja V.
Hi, I've a question, should I move on to full frame instead of buying Nikon 16-80 f2.8-4 for a crop body?
Either one could make sense, depending on your budget, your current needs and future plans.

Very informative video. Did you get a chance to check flash compatibility with D780? I have heard with most flashes, it gives over exposed photos.
I did not. If you feel the images are over-exposed, have you tried using a diffusing filter? Pointing the flash a little higher, or a little to one side of your subject? Have you adjusted the flash compensation? There must be lots of ways to compensate for this.
Remarkable overview of the 780. I believe you missed the max exposure time which is 900 seconds.11:55

Hi Maarten
Many thanks for this great review for D780. I am just wondering how the AF speed of D 780 is compared to D500/D5.Thanks

@@hanss9239 It is absolutely unfair to call APS-C small.
@@skakdosmer Or course.
No one can predict what Nikon will actually do.
Why are you not happy with the D780?
I was hoping this would be priced the same if not less than the Z6 (since I rent Z6 with G lenses anyway) but shocked to find the body-only D780 surpassing even the Z6+FTZ+64GB XQD+24-70mm f4 S Lens combo price at my local store!
Nikon just doesn't want to challenge the A7III 😒
Nikon suits their prices to the market that they see for this model, and it doesn't always make sense or suit our wallets.
why does Nikon have the focus points clumped together in the centre on their FX cameras?
Because focus is more complicated in DSLR - mirrorless cameras have simpler systems for focus.
I wonder why you never reviewed any Pentax camera?? They often give the best user experience in my opinion..
Okay. Why do you want to do this? What about the D7200 is no longer pleasing you, or providing the results you would like?
Good advice.
Hi Maarten!
Thank you very much for the great review. Do you think that the D780 is the perfect camera to upgrade from DX to FX? What do you think about the 24-120?

When On, that allows settings from 60 seconds up to 15 minutes.
would you suggest a nikon d7500 over a canon eos 77d considering all advantages and disadvantages?
Hard to say without knowing what your intentions and needs are. Both are suitable if you can't afford the D780.
I would take the sensor in d7500, which is taken from the flagship d500, any day over this Canon.
Just upgraded from a D3300. Havent taken any pics yet charging the battery and watching vids going over the manual. This is going to be such a mega upgrade lol

Thank you. 👍
Always nice to read that my videos are helpful and appreciated.
Looks a very capable camera if you shoot F Mount and don't want to migrate to mirrorless. But why no battery grip Nikon? Thanks for the detailed and informative review Maarten.
Thanks, always nice to read kind words, appreciated.
Unless you're planning to buy new lenses, you're better off with the D780. However, what specifically do you hope to improve with this purchase?

I'm not really able to answer that question. I wasn't able to compare them side by side, and wildlife/bird is not really my practice. Sorry.

Yes it does, and thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Sir will video not record in 2 memory card at a same time for backup?
No.
Then sir i think z6 is better option for video of its xqd card...xqd cards are more safe...
@@insidefeelings9434 While I agree with your statement in general, good quality SD cards that are well-cared for can also be very reliable.
Want true efficiency, shoot kelvin and batch edit at the end (don't believe the raw is for adjust white balance in post nonsense, I can adjust white balance in PS just like my raw files, know your software and you shouldn't be off by more than 2stops in highlights or shadows, if you are you may want to turn on P mode)
I'd been trying to figure out why Nikon keeps these video settings.
Have some experience in broadcast (frankenstein broadcast system at my old church 🤯)
They basically got scammed into buying incorrect broadcast equipment and asked me to figure it out.

I'm in the market for a new video camera.
Not sure if Nikon allows HSS to strobes while using Live Frame Grab.
None of my current clients care about print so 2mp is all I need these days b/c they just upload to instagram and websites.
