    Thank you for putting this up. The first match I ever went to was Arsenal v Man Utd in Sept 69. Today was the first time I've seen the goals since then. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks again.

    Great footage. The goalkeepers don't have numbers on the back of their jerseys - when was this introduced into the English game?
    3:14 - 1969-70 was the last season for Stockport County featuring a jersey with a band across the middle.
    10:30 - with the introduction of colour TV, did many teams update their kits so that they would stand out better?
    21:20 - you don't see too many pitches like this today!
    23:09 - Eddie Gray scores one of the best solo goals of all-time.
    28:52 - goalscorer John Trollope still holds the record for the most games in the Football League by a player who played with only one club - 770 games for Swindon Town between 1960 and 1980.
    36:03 - first time I've seen the four goals in the game that weren't scored by George Best!
    48:06 - cracking goal by Ray Crawford.
    53:30 - the outrageous skill of Rodney Marsh.
    1:21:58 - ball was placed outside of the corner arc, so the goal shouldn't have been allowed.

      I always think of Tony Coleman as the greatest commentator of them all . But I loved Brian Moore too . I also think there were another 3 or 4 top , top football commentators from this era . I loved listening to them all when I was a young boy , still love hearing them now . They were so much better than today’s commentators . A world of difference , way superior . And the football from this period was light years ahead of the football played today , in my opinion . It was just so exciting . Thrilling in fact . Today’s game just cannot compare . Rubbish in comparison .

    crikey its a wonder spurs didnt go down this season - we were awful. 60-70 really marked the end of bill nicholson's 'glory glory' side. Credit to him for rebuilding and creating a very good spurs team in the early 70s. No question signing the martin peters from west ham was crucial to tottenham's early 70s revival which saw them win 3 trophies in 3 seasons and reach another european final

    Nice job ... I was a kid when this happened in the late 60s but the names I recognized when was an early teen in the 70s are all here .. I even remember the commentators voices ... they knew then that here was 'cadence' and 'swing' to the game that persists to today

    Everton would go on to win the First Division championship that season, Culminating reaching their peak after a good 1968-69 season. Spurs and Leeds had challenged them all the way.
    Arsenal were a great team with perfect balance and would succeed Everton the next season and complete a league and cup double.
    Players like John Radford and Charlie George, and Peter Osgood would have been a revelation in the Premier League.
    Sadly Everton, after providing four players who played in the 1970 Mexico world cup, fell away in the early 70s. The four, Ball, Labone, Newton and Tommy Wright became shadows of the players they were in the late 60s. To think the great strikers and defenders on show here were paid a pittance compared to the 1980s onwards.

    I was at The Arsenal Everton game. Actually I think I put the mockers on the Toffees. I saw 7 of their games and they lost three of them. But they were a great side. Biggest highlight for me though is the Rod Marsh magic at 53.30. The biggest ever crowd at a reserve match at Roots Hall was when Southend Reserves played QPRs and Rodney was playing his first game after coming back from injury.

    when football was a real pleasure for the working man , all games kicked off at the same time . Okay the pitches might not be like today's pitches however the players more than made up for this with their determination to compete for every ball. Tackles were full on unlike today's game , you only have to sneeze and they fall down clutching their limbs.Has for the fans Saturdays was their day , the smell of cigarettes and hot pies , the sound of the sings from the terraces the then game died thanks to Sky

    Your never ever see the likes of some of these players again . Every team in those days had special players, didn't matter who you supported. I was brought up on Law Best and Charlton. But I have to consider the likes of the Greavsies , Hurst,s , Osgood,s , Lees and marsh,s of this world and the countless others that were to grace the English game at that time. Players with various skills , players who were hard.
    I like many was so lucky to see the many characters that made sat afternoon,s a bit special . Most of them in my opinion were worth their weight in gold compared to some who play today . But as we all know the game has changed. I often wonder how some of today's players would of coped if they had played in the 60,s and 70,s .

      He was a fine goalie, which is why he broke the world record transfer fee, I've seen lots of goalie errors at that time from the likes of Stepney and Bob Wilson, yet everyone remembers Sprake's howlers. People should remember he also made fine saves in that FA Cup final, was excellent in the 65 FA Cup final and the 68 Fairs Cup final. He recently died and it's high time there was a reassessment.

    • @choppy249
      @choppy249 4 роки тому

      Bernard Jay . Sprake was always having mishaps . There was some amazingly good goalkeepers from that period though. Banks , Jennings , Bonetti , Stepney , Shilton , Wilson , Corrigan , Montgomery , Springett , to name just a few . In fact during this era it was generally accepted that England had the best goalkeepers in the world . You have to remember that the pitches could be diabolical in those days often with a very heavy and muddy ball . That made it so much more difficult for goalkeepers than it is for keepers today , playing in pristine conditions with a much lighter and cleaner ball . It was a nightmare trying to stop a thunderous shot with a great big heavy and muddy football back then . Today’s keepers have it easy in comparison .

    Under what circumstances were matches shot in colour vs black and white? Did it depend on what the home club could afford?

    • @YeOldeFootballChannel
      @YeOldeFootballChannel  9 років тому +7

      Sridhar Sarnobat This is a very good question and I have a good answer. No, it did not depend on the home club; but for the capacity of the TV station to have colour cameras. Colour Tv arrived on ITV on November 15th 1969, but only London, the Midlands and Yorkshire covered their games in colour by that day (both had test recordings of early games in colour). Granada (North West) started their colour coverage in January 1970, and the rest were arriving: Tyne Tees started the following season, as well as Southern. HTV (Wales and Bristol) and Anglia (Ipswich and Norwich) were the latest, in 1971-72.
      This does not mean that colour was everywhere, because there were moments where bad light meant that cameras had to be switched to B/W (example of this, games in Anglia during 1973) or during the winter of 1970, where a Technicians strike meant that all ITV programmes were shown and recorded in Monochrome.
