The Sankakusen grind by CY on the standard gold nib will make you slap your mama. Worth every penny it costs. Shame this had to be done without the standard nib because it is an incredible experience.

I have both the Kyuseido and Gravitas versions of this pen. They are great pens but the unusual colouring of the gravitas makes it pop more. The only issue I have is that there is nothing to act as a roll stop so I have to bring a little pen rest when travelling. I also have a Conid Bulkfiller. The conid is also great but the recent price hikes make it over twice the price of the Kakari. I would rather have both Kakaris with custom grinds for the price of the conid.

The filling mechanism is different. I would imagine this mechanism takes less space in the back hence more space in the ink reservoir.

Take care: if you have a problem with the pen, Gravitas support is none and you cannot trust any answer provided by Ben Walsh. I have no problem to write this as I have several proof. Gravitas sent me 2 unusable pens. 4 months of exchange with B. Walsh, he recognized the problem, told me several time that the parcel was sent with the needed parts to repair, and in reality the parcel each time was not sent. Still finding many excuses about something which goes wrong. But each time I'm asking for the parcel number, he lies. I'm not alone in this case. I've a -let's say- "not neglectable pen collection", I've never seen a company acting like that.

At this price point, I feel like that should be the standard pen, not a special edition. This pen looks solidly built but lacks some esthetic appeal. It's not ugly, but I expect a little more from a pen at $600.

Penbbs 355 bulkfiller has the same filling system. The engage/disengage mechanism isn't exactly the same, but the method is the same. I don't think it allows you to disengage the piston at the halfway mark. I haven't tried. It's the Asvine V200 that most resembles the Conid, and the Asvine has similarities in looks, to the pen you're reviewing although the V200 is a regular vacuum fill system. The first time I filled the 355, I ended up with ink all over my fingers as disengaging and replacing the rod, displaces some ink and I didn't expect that. Yes, please do a shootout! Only get an Asvine V200 and make it a three way shootout. I've written with both the Conid and the V200 and I preferred the Asvine pen.

Conid used to customise pens similar to a musician's instrument. You could make custom requests and they would do it. They were so successful that they no longer bother to do that. They sell pens in pre-made batches through a retailer. Much of the appeal of a Conid is gone, yet the price has stayed the same or increased. Not to mention, the Conid has some design flaws that have not been corrected in over 6 years. It seems obvious that they stopped innovating due to their massive success. I welcome more competition in the market.

    Excellent review, congratulations Stephen !
The Kyuseido /Gravitas filler is effectively a slightly different but nicely made Bulkfiller copy
Being the designer of the Conid Bulkfiller , allow me add one important difference.
It concerns he integrated “ stick-slip breaker slope” in the Bulkfiller
It looks Kyuseido /Gravitas opted for a relatively high radial pretensioned piston seal.
However the higher the radial pretension of the piston seal , the more the piston seal will initially stick when trying to push the piston down after being parked -static -for a few days
On any static seated rubber piston seal the micro ink film between the sealing lip and the piston bore is gradually pushed out, resulting in a dry wall contact, causing “stick”
Thanks to the Bulkfiller’s axial 1.5mm axial piston displacement by the stick slip breaker slope, ink directly restores between the sealing lip surface and the piston slides easily over its total stroke .
Note this “stick-slip” phenomenon is also experienced on a classic piston filler
If you screw the piston down for filling, one first experiences a higher resistance due to the dry contact, “the piston sticks”'. Given the screwing movement is avoiding a brusque down movement the remaing ink will not be ejected
Screwing the piston a few millimeters further the higher frictional resistance falls away , "the piston "slips”. Given the screwing movement is not triggering a brusque down movement the remaining ink will not be ejected, but with a bulk filler similar system ink will be brusquely ejected when leaving the "stick" zone !!

I don't see anything wrong with the pen, but it doesn't really do anything for me either. The "leaving the piston half-way" thing is just a gimmick to me, because it has a shut-off rod(so burping on a partial fill is irrelevant) and I have never felt the need to adjust the weight balance of a properly designed pen.
It's also somewhat disingenuous for them to claim their design is based on the 1898 patent rather than the bulkfiller. As they mention(to their credit), the original patent basically sat idle for over a century because it didn't detail how the piston would be prevented from endlessly spinning around in the barrel when you try to unthread the rod from the piston, which is a problem Francis Goossens solved and was then able to patent because it turned a useless invention into a functional product. I doubt Kyuseido would even have known about that patent if it weren't for people falsely claiming that Conid "just copied a 1898 patent" on FPN a couple of years ago. The Kakari is a good pen, I don't think they had to try so hard to make it seem like an entirely novel filling system; it just makes it sound like razor companies slapping on yet another blade and calling it a revolution in shaving.

    • @francisgoossens8237
      @francisgoossens8237 26 днів тому +1

Thanks for your "Conid friendly" reaction @osirisgolad!
Allow me to give you some insight in the development history of the Bulkfiller.
After the initial bulk filler design - started in 2010! - and making/ thoroughly testing the “proof of principle” pen we made 5 prototypes given to 5 “frequent writers”
After testing for 6 months we integrated some improvements triggered by their feedback and decided to patent the Bulkfiller system.
Despite the extensive research of our patent attorneys we only learned - after our patent application - that a patent of GH Means from1898! “Spritzenfüller mit einschiebbarem Stange” existed.
This was reported to us by the US patent office.
However the system was never marketed because the piston at the rear could not be radially locked ,hence the piston rod could be unscrewed or screwed in.
We were logically disappointed, and even considered stopping the patent application
After further consideration in light of the important advantages of our Bulkfiller design, we decided to proceed with the patent application anyway.
Consequently, there are two important “patented” advantages in our design
1- The positive radial and axial locking of the piston in its “parking position” after filling.
This system guarantees that one can always screw the piston rod in and out of the piston without any risk of the piston slipping axially or radially in the barrel.
2- The radial "stick-slip breaker slope"
The Kyuseido /Gravitas filler is effectively a technically slightly different but nicely made Bulkfiller copy
It looks Kyuseido /Gravitas opted for a relatively high radial pretensioned piston seal
Thanks to the Bulkfiller’s axial 1.5mm axial piston displacement by the stick slip breaker slope when unlatching the piston from its “parked" position, hence fluid contact directly restores between the sealing lip surface and the piston slides easily over its total stroke .
Note this “stick-slip” phenomenon is also experienced on a classic piston filler On which the piston has not been activated for a few days.
If you screw the piston down for filling, one first experiences a higher resistance due to the dry contact, “the piston sticks”'.
Screwing the piston a few millimeters further the higher frictional resistance falls away , "the piston “slips”
Hope this gives you more insight the Bulkfiller history….
      Kind regards,
      Francis Goossens
