In case someone cares. I believe the name DaDào means something like thoroughfare or main road. 大刀(DaDāo) is a type of knife and 大道(DaDào) is the name of this pen. Cheers.

I have 2 of these Jinhao 9019. I cannot praise the pen more. Both of mine wrote wonderfully out of the box. Reverse writing is a treat too. Quality control appears not to be there with Chinese pen but it wrote better than many expensive Visconti's and Auroras.
A pity that you got a dud. I bought 2: first a lovely burgundy with the M nib, the second the transparent olive green with the “heartbeat” nib design also in M. Both lovely writers. You’re right that number 8 nibs are the current “zeitgeist” in the community.
My was great. Perfect writer. My was semi dry and scratchy. Tuned it up and polished it and she writes wet now. Great, fun pens imo.
Pretty sure it's not a copy or homage of MB 149, but Namiki Emperor. I have none of those, but just from the pictures it's very clear that 9019 is based on Namiki's shape and clip. Also I believe it's bigger than MB 149. Jinhao X159 is the one that copies 149 and 9019 is bigger than that.
As for the nib, I'm afraid dryness is an issue with Jinhao's #8 nibs. I have three of them: two X159s and one 9019. The 9019 was the only one which was fine enough as it arrived. First of my X159s is usable but very dry - hard starts and skipping are a frequent problem. The second was almost unusable - I bought a replacement Jinhao nib and this one is much better, but also not exactly what it should be.
I also have two of these (a fine and a medium) and both of mine wrote beautifully out of the box. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. Sorry to hear you were not so fortunate.
I bought one few months ago, with an EF nib. That one was too wet, to broad, and a lot scratchy. After fiddling for a couple of hours, I ditched the nib and transplanted one in from x159 (you can screw the whole nib unit from the newer x159, they're compatible).
I ordered several #8 EF jinhao units, will see if I get better luck. And yes, in my experience, most of the #8 from jinhaos needed some adjustment (they were mostly too dry).
It's unfortunate that you got a badly tuned pen. I bought EXACTLY the same model in a simple plastic sheet for 8 dollars - and it wrote wonderfully.
No complaints whatsoever.
I'm curious - I recently got the new "X159" by Jinhao. It has the same nib as this 9019. Before first use I washed it with some dish soap and noticed there was a trace of what seemed like green ink. I'm sure it was new so I i can only assume that it had been tested in the factory - just like lamy. Btw the nib is okay. Wet, although not as smooth as the old all metal jinhao 159 nibs
Bought late 2023 I have now 4 of these in and have ordered some nibs as these are surprisingly nice pens. I love the large size, the plastic feels very good in the hand unlike older Jinhao pens that I wish I never bought- including the 159, 450, 500 and X750 -these are metal and heavy but importantly just don’t feel good in the hand. For me the 9019 writes smoothly, is a little stiff with little feedback, is not as smooth as Pilot or feedbacky as Sailor, yet is enjoyable to write with. There is no missing in what I have, and left alone for weeks still writes immediately with no skipping.
As for what constitutes an enjoyable writer, I would have to leave that to others more experienced to answer. But I can say the 9019 even though it flexes little, is up there with Pilot 823 and 845 in terms of writing pleasure. It does not come close to the Pelikan M1000 I am currently wigging out on, that arrived 2 days ago, but at this price I think this is a wonderful pen.
I had the same issue with the same pen, but a fine nib. Put a bit more of a gap in the tines, and now it is actually a very enjoyable pen.
Same here!! I just got the pen in F nib and it's hardly writing. How do you enlarge the gap? I am new to having to fix issues with pens. I usually buy the pricey pens and don't have issues. For $13 I'm learning....
Bought six 9019/X159 and every single one wrote perfect out of the box. Very unfortunate that you are so incredibly unlucky time and time again when it comes to these pens.
I'd recommend Hongdian over the other Chinese brands. They seem to have the best quality control on their in-house nibs.
The nib on my X159 first nib came like that.
Had some spares to swapped it, and turning the defective nib into a stub.
If memory serves the 9019 uses the same nib unit.

Why not start a 'Go Fund Me' for a $7 pen?
The pen really mimics the Namiki Yukari Royale in size, although the nib looks like cheap steel Montblanc 149 copy. The best of this pen is the cartridge converter, with a huge ink capacity and a screw-in mechanism that holds it safely in place. Many manufacturers (Sailor & Pilot, to name a few) should take a careful look at it!
As someone that bought a few X159s and a few 9019s, all of the #8 nibs were very dry (to varying degrees) and required running a brass shim to open up the times. The nibs write really nice once they have some decent ink flow. That being said, it absolutely would be a determent if I did not know or did not have the capability to do so.

Bought one 6 months before, had exactly same problems - Nib/feed misalignment and Not writing ! Abandoned the pen.
I bought one too and I have been pleasantly surprised. The clear plastic case looks like the TWSBI case. My pen wrote right out of the box after cleaning. Thanks again for great reviews.

2. I really love the oversized converter. I wish every converter pen came with a converter maximized for the pen. The KoP in particular comes to mind.
You must consider the price of the pen. QC is not consistent on the Jinhao. After some minor adjustments Jinhao's work rather well..... Comparing a Jinhoa with a Mont Blanc 149 is a serious error in judgement and quite unfair to Jinhoa.

I have been very lucky with my Chinese pens. At this point I think it's just a matter of time before I get a faulty one.
Mine didn't write either. But after a treatment with brass sheet and micromesh, the nib is one of my favourites.
My pen was exactly like yours out of the box. I still haven't really fixed it because I'm a bit worried to try and I have other pens that write.
Great review. I purchased two pens 9019 with Medium Nibs. Mine worked perfectly out of the box. I find Jinhao pens the perfect platform to modify nibs and feeds. I took a EF nib from a x159 (same as 9019) and ground it into a stub. It worked out so well, I did it on several pens. Learning how to align feeds and tune nibs are skills if you are going to have a fountain pen hobby. However, very frustrating for those that just want to write.
My 9019 f nib did not work out of the box and I had to do a lot of tinkering with the nib as the gap was too small, eventually I managed to widen the gap and aligned the tines, then it worked well but the flow was too much, it had turned into a broad from a fine 😅
I guess i widened it too much, i tried to narrow it down again, without luck
I have about 8 of these pens, all demonstrators, along with 5 Lamy Vistas. The 9019s I've inked, all write beautifully. I even took one completely to bits, including the brass threaded unit out of the grip section. Put it all back together with a finer No.8 nib and it worked perfectly. I like large pens, and only demonstrators.
I bought a Pilot 742 from the Japanese market since they don't seem to sell this pen through regular commercail channels, in Canada . The 14k gold nib had a horrible "scratchiness" to it that was not a simple fix however, I was able to tune it. I understand the problem with quality control but was also hoping you could also provide your thoughts on the pen after tuning it. I get it. Not everyone would be able to fix these issues, so your reasoning is valid, but I respect your expert opinion if it's a good writer, when working properly. I've been trying to limit adding to my collection cheap Chinese pens and this bit of info would have been interesting. Hopefully you can let us know...
I have 2, one not yet filled and used, but my first - a medium nib - glides nicely and is a wet writer. I love it!
I look forward to seeing your next video correcting the flow and making it juicy. I’ve got 2 Kaweco sports a stub and a broad they are dry hard starts I can’t get them to work properly.
There is a very small hole at the end of the barrel (verified by sucking on the end of the barrel) so I don’t believe it could be used as an eye dropper.
I purchased three for $20 on a special deal a couple of months back, black, blue and burgundy I don't like clear. Two fine and one medium. The medium had exactly the same issue, the tines pinched so tightly closed they would not write. One fine was great out of the box and the other fine had issues being too wet and wrote wider than the medium. Now having said that, they are probably some of the better presented I have found in this three for $20 category, they just needed a better focus on tuning and assembly. But they are three for $20 so I won't complain about the need to do some tuning. After tuning two of the three are very good, but after reassembly one of the sections has become loose for nib and feed. On inspection I think there are artefacts that indicate they are most likely assembling the nib and feed hot/warm into the section, and they are probably tested before they go cool as there was ink in the feeds. I wouldn't be surprised if I come across another dry one that it would write better once warmed up a bit, but what use is that to most people so you must be prepared to tune them. I don't have particularly big hands, but they sit quite comfortably and I do prefer thicker pens using an eMotion as an EDC. In summary, if they were good enough to write reasonably OOB they would be a good buy, but people not understanding or into nib tuning will buy these and many will likely be disappointed. If people ask me for a first pen recommendation I'll stick with my Safari recommendations or maybe even horror of horrors a crystal clear Vista, shut my mouth! 🙄
Had to work on the nib a bit with mine as the tines were also too tight, but after I did, it became a great writer. I think it is more a "homage" to the Namiki Emperor, not the 149. Ordered another one because...colors.
Another informative video Dr. Brown but why does this pen look so familiar? It took me awhile and I remember your G.O.A.T. video featuring your Delta Roma imperiale! I had to purchase one like, yesterday and it's on its way.
I have the green demonstrator with the " heartbeat" nib but instead I received the pen with a fartbeat nib , really annoying.
Went back and viewed/ applied your tutorial on nib issues and now it's perfect, enjoyable and resuscitated.
I gifted my father a 9019. Had that pen had the issues yours has he would've probably chocked it up to it being a straight up bad pen and wouldn't have used it. I was lucky enough that, when i checked the nib not only it was properly alligned, but it also had traces of ink from being tested.
I can only guess Jinhao stepped up their quality assurance on the newer models only to drop the standards once the bulk of the sales have happened in an attempt to make it so reviews, which usually come out early and are therefore among the first units bought; all have a positive spin
I got two 9019s in a bundle, and had managed to already forget that one of them had this same problem. After improving the flow, I've enjoyed both -- but now I'm wondering what it says that "didn't write until I fixed it" is something I take for granted will happen sometimes.

I have more than 100 pens that are all in the better-to-grail level. Since I prefer a smooth, wet writer but not a gusher, I have not found more than a few pens that pleased me out of the box. The same is true for the pen you reviewed and the 159X. A little micro mesh and these steel nibs write as well as many of the other No. 8 nibs made of gold on the MB 159, the Bock nibs on Montegrappa, and better than the Pelikan M100. They do not write as well as the Sailor King of Pen or the Pilot Custom Urushi. All the pens I named are around 100 times more expensive than the low price I paid for my pens., I like the 9019 so much that I bought around a dozen of them to give to people when I proselytize about the wonders of fountain pen writing (and tune and polish the nibs before my donees get their pens)/ Given my experience, I thought your review was slanted and unfair. I have seen some of your reviews where you show us how the pen writes after you adjust a faulty nib.
To be fair, he did say it was easy to adjust.

I also like smooth & wet pens, but in my experience the Pelikan m1000 has the best nibs.
As for Jinhao, I have several X159 and 9019s - while their writing qualities are not exactly consistent, essentially all of them write well. Some of them write better than my Pilot Custom Urushi (which writes well, but its pencil like feedback isn't what I'm looking for).
Jinhao quality control being what it is, one’s experience with their pens boils down to the luck of the draw, and there’s no rhyme nor reason to it. The nib on my first-generation X159, essentially the same one as on this 9019, functioned flawlessly, but some reviewers complained that the plastic body was poorly fitted and creaky, and claimed that the second-generation ones, which were available with the options of coloured caps and barrels and gold-plated nibs and trim, were much improved in those areas. My experience was the opposite, however: my original black X159 with a plain stainless #8 nib was as solid and stable as a rock, while it was the red one with a gold-plated nib, cap band and pocket clip that squeaked if I grasped the cap too tightly. This plated nib wrote nearly as smoothly as the plain stainless one, so I wasn’t complaining about the very minor problem with the overall package. These both have nibs marked “F” but write more like nibs with Medium points. Both start instantly when put to paper and, without skips of any kind, unfailing keep going until completely out of ink! I was impressed enough that I was eager to get my hands on the even larger 9019 with the same newly-designed #8 nib, so I ordered one with a Medium nib, but was disappointed when it wrote extremely well only about half of the time. I can write for twenty minutes nonstop with it when, despite being far from low on ink, it will stop, and it can be quite a struggle to get it going again. Hemingway Jones’ review of the 9019 noted the same thing: that his X159s functioned flawlessly, while the 9019 wrote extremely well but only part of the time. I noticed that his also had a Medium nib, as did Steven’s. One thing that occurred to me was that most of these are shipped from the factory with Fine nibs, and a lot of orders for Mediums are probably fulfilled by online retailers swapping out Fine nibs for Medium nibs themselves. To be sure, my Medium arrived misaligned too. I am only speculating about this, though, and it could be that it was the factory that dropped the ball on this particular example of their work. It would be interesting to see if the box mentions what width of nib the pen had installed on it by the factory.
That's unfortunate. Mine was quite smooth and wet out of the box, but I also paid a more for it...? I went with the transparent green. I love the hand. Very reliable.
Yes, a Chinese Dadao is kin to the European Falchio in that it's a broad, light chopper for cleaving through unarmoured opponents.

The pen at least to me resembles your delta Roma, maybe because it is also a clear demonstrator.
I have all variants of the jinhao x159 with the exception of the apple green which I have in the earlier 159. I had hits and misses on the nibs and bought some nib unit replacements on Amazon. They too had issues. I put them away for now because how you expressed your issues with this pen is precisely how I showed mine except you have more restraint. I gravitate to my jinhao 159 fountain pens in which I replaced all of the nibs with either Goulet, Knox or even italix from Mr. Pen . For my preference they just feel better balanced in my hand where the x159s are just too light and sadly I have this issue with my pilot custom urushi which I seldom use.

I recently bought 8 of these pen n 3 of them I can’t draw line from left to right.. it’s cutting the paper.. well it’s only sgd8 you can’t expect much in the QC..
Hmm. My 9019 writes so wet, that the Fine nib makes a line like a Broad. I am also using Iroshizuki ink.
Mine writes OK. No issues expect my hand aches after a while because the section is actually too thick for my hand.
Hello Stephen, did you notice some similarity with your Delta Roma Imperiale? 😊 no, actually there is some sort of opening at the end of the barrel. I immediately tried to eyedrop my own and ink miserably leaked down on my table and paper 😂😂😂. Btw I’ve got 6 of them in different colors and nib size, from EF to M and maybe one (M) did not write well out of the box. I regularly use the clear demonstrator (F) on every day job with great satisfaction.

I've just ordered two of these pens for 10 USD, both with Medium nibs (transparent red and burgundy) - hoping at least one of them will write.
i had a nib like yours that didn't write. i tuned the hell out of it with six grades of micro-mesh and it's now a super-wet broad that writes like a namiki emperor. and if i'd screwd it up, who cares? ten dollar pen! i've had to do the same with $1000 pens from italy!

I got two of them. Both wrote right out of the box. However, I had to manipulate the nibs to make them wetter. Imho, the major problem with chinese pens is quality control. Sometimes you get a very fine product, sometimes you get garbage. It's a lottery.
On the other hand, I bought one of these pens through Amazon, and it wrote straightaway and was, if anything, a touch on the wet side.

I got mine about 2 months ago and after I filled it with blue DC pen super show ink and it hit the paper and hasn’t stopped yet. I guess I should feel lucky.
Unfortunate that your 9019 didn’t write. I have two of these pens and they are wonderful writers. So……there you have it.

Out of my 8 nibs purchased for the Jinhao 9019: 2 were unusable, 4 were scratchy, 2 were perfect. I have purchased different sizes (M, F, XF). It is completely irrelevant. The medium was finer than the XF. Great pen though.
Thank you for sharing this! I too bought this model. Shocker, it does not write unless significant pressure is applied. Agree that it’s not the end of the world but I wish more reviewers were a bit more circumspect before lavishing praise on this pen’s ability to, you know, write.
How do you fix the Nib and feed issue of this pen?
Thanks for the review Dr. Brown. I bought 3 colors of the demonstrator and 3 solid colors. The first use I made after writing with the 9019 was to exchange the Jinhao #8 nib for the Leonardo Galleria #8 titanium nib. The Leonardo nib refused to write no matter the ink, or paper. Now with my Jinhao nib, I can finally use my $300+ Leonardo. Since to my mind the Titanium nib is now garbage, I put it in the Jinhao and finally discovered that if I primed the feed periodically, the pen would write only in a reversed position. I guess this goes to show that any pen manufacturer can suffer failures. I own 28 Leonardos and this is my first failed pen. The company did not respond to my emails. I am not a fan of #8 nibs at this point but I am grateful Jinhao ventured there.
I bought a 9019 with Extra Fine nib, and arrived just a week before your review. I was a bit disappointed with the nib, it works but it's super dry and scratchy, way more than an EF nib should be. Writing with just a bit more pressure makes the the pen remove material from the paper. Looks like there is no tipping material at all, while my Pilot Kakuno Fine Nib has a little ball in the nib.
After trying to align the tines, then i tried to open the tines a bit (pushing down hard a couple of times on paper) and polishing it (dragging down vertically on brown paper, not making figure 8's) it has become more usable, but still below my Kakunos. Keep in mind this was my first attempt to try and do a nib tuning.
I like everything about the 9019, the size, weight, looks, huge converter, except the nib that was a let down for me, since everyone praises that Jinhao's nibs have improved a lot lately.
My 9019 worked fine out of the box, though I think the issue is more quality control.
As other commenters, I was lucky. My 9019 wrote not just good but great, even a little wet for an F nib.
I have to China and yes I bought a dadao sword part of a real human skull attached to it. So yes the word is sword also.
Unfortunately this happens a lot, my experience (small sample size, but I own ~40 pens from this price bracket) is like 10% that don't write to an acceptable degree. This one is definitely on the extreme scale of poor writing.
For people into it, and less capable of tuning / fixing the nib, I could also recommend just buying two.
nice job on this Stephen, I've been impressed with this pen, as well as the Jinhao x-159. They are increasing quality, but they must be able to write well. I find my tastes are simplifying and I like and appreciate the pens that I have. I've also come back to more simplistic inks. best to you in the northland! Frank in Colorado
I bought a non-demonstrator Jinhao 9019 in Blue from a seller on Aliexpress. I paid less than you, and mine came in a jiffy bag and a synthetic pen bag, so fair enough. I have a Jinhao 159, so the size wasn't surprised. Here's my TLDR conclusion:
I need girthy pens because age and injury means that they are more comfortable to hold, and write with for long sessions. The relatively lighter weight to the metal-bodied 159 is a plus. The pen capped, isn't too long for me, and the balance is good.
The extra large converter is another plus, as I may stop yearning now for a piston model.
My pen came in good working condition and, with a wet, smooth medium nib with very little feedback. It's my wettest nib, and would probably cope with drier inks, quite easily. It's the broadest medium I own too. So to be fair, I agree Jinhao needs better quality control as far as nibs go. I was lucky, as mine wrote out of the box.
I have so far binned only one Jinhao that came with nib issues and poor acrylic, but that was some years ago.
If Jihao gets their quality issues ironed out, the 9019 could be a staple of their range.
I have two 9019s, both wonderful writers. Yours has a strange blob where the nib unit screws in; something wrong there. I would make two points about these pens: the newer ones have a nib which aligns with the clip when the pen is closed, a real touch of class. Second point: try an XF nib. This one was a real winner for me.
Write? We can write with our fountain pens?? This adds a whole new dimension to the hobby. Thank you for starting what will surely be a viral trend. I suppose I should buy a bottle of ink for the full writing experience.
I have three Jihhao X159's. The first two were workable but had nibs that flopped back and forth on the feed. The third one is a new style feed and the nib is secure.
FWIW, mine have been great.
Sorry about your nib. I have 2 9019 pens and both work well. I did have your problem with one of the pens. I shimmed the tunes and now works well. The other pen wrote out of the box. Consistency of Jinhao nibs have gotten better but nibs from any manufacturer can release a bad nib.
I think the size of the nib is close to the Pilot Emperor than the 149.
Sorry you got one of the lemons; mine was surprisingly...great! Smooth, wonderful writer right out of the box -- more than I can say for my (few) Visconti's and at much more tolerable price! Sub-optimal QC annoys me, too (looking at you, Visconti and Monteverde).
Never had a good Jinhao. I had the same model as yourself and really wanted it to work. Alas no, nib was awful.
Great review! Of course the review pen turns out to be problematic... Murphy's Law? I purchased all 3 demonstrators and a blue one with various nib sizes via AliExpress a while ago at about $8/pen. All four nibs wrote nicely out of the box (or bag, actually). I've ground one of the M into a cursive italic and it is a lovely writer with the feed keeping up flow. I've also swapped in a 14k MB 149 nib into the 9019 (just nib, keeping the JinHao feed, no mod) and it too worked perfectly.
You are absolutely right to insist that a pen write from the start without tuning, as most people do not want, wish, or know how to tune their own nibs. Having the skill may be fun but should not be necessary. One can buy a 7 pen pack of Pilot Varsity and every one of the pens will write. So the QA know-how exists and is possible. JinHao and other Chinese makers have made tremendous improvements in this area over the past few years. On the other hand, I would be thrilled if my Viscontis and Pineiders had this level of QA...
True about the inconsistent quality but if you know how to tune nibs then it is a non issue. All of mine work great and I also swapped in a vintage 14C Bold MB nib into a transparent 9019 and the feed is keeps up and is a very juicy writer. Love it.
I do like clear pens. I have this pen, but given your experience, I consider myself lucky. I do like no 8 nibs, but no big deal. Unlike you, it does matter to me that it writes out of the box. I am with you. I expect pens to write
Well, you got a lemon, out of the box. Bummer! My 9019 did write, and well, although the nib and feed were loose in the collar. What I find odd about this quality control issue is that Jinhao have done such a splendid job of quality control with their 82. How did that not carry over into the 9019? I almost wonder if . . . well, never mind about connecting dots with no evidence. That said, nice nib, nice writing experience, impressive innovation with the converter, price that justifies the risk.
I bought this pen in the Burgundy color with a medium nib and it writers great... That's the unfortunate thing with Jinhao is that the nibs (the most important part) are a roll of the dice. Which is why I have a hard time recommending them despite the price because I don't want a newbie to be put off by a bum nib. I'd pay just a smidge more if they could somehow just check the nibs.
I have a bunch of these and all of them are beautiful writers. Sorry that you got a real dud of a pen.

Thank you for stating that the true nature of a fountain pen is to write. I received the identical Jinhao 9019 from Amazon, and it did not write. I sent it back without fixing the exceedingly 'tight' tines on the nib. Also, I believe the body of the pen is too
'fat'....it needs to take a little Ozempic around the barrel. It's girth needs a trimming.
They now have a model 9016 with the same basic shape but a bit slimmer. I can’t remember if it’s fitted with the same no. 8 nib or some smaller one. I just hope you can get one that actually writes - and that I can too.
But ... did it write ...?
Most nibs are a bit too dry for me, so I expect to do a bit of work on any pen I get.

While some fountain pen aficionados might be able to adjust their pens, not everyone will, and average people who just happened to have stumbled upon this item on Amazon, eBay, or Etsy and liked the look and price certainly wouldn’t even know that they can be fixed. Nor should merchandise need fixing when new. I am going to take a chance on this one and order it, but poor quality control across the price spectrum is sure to doom the growing fountain pen industry/hobby.

My 9019 wrote quite well, and with a pigment ink at that. It performed swimmingly each time I picked it up. However I find the pen weirdly too large even though I like large pens. There's something about the acrylic that feels unyielding & uncomfortable. Conversely, the x159 feels excellent in my hand but it was not problem-free, sadly. One of my strict criteria for fountain pens is that they don't spontaneously fall apart. That's my x159 story. All said, these are sub-$15 dollar pens. Get = paid for and all of that.
My experience exactly. I have very large hands and like large pens but this pen is just a tad to large. I have a few and they are all flawless and don't dry out when not used. However, the X159 is just the right size but the clip is garbage and the pen dries out right away.
I had an x-159 that wrote fine and was my favorite for about a month. Then it fell apart. My 9019 OTOH is great.
Incidentally, after making my original comment I discovered that my 9019 was still inked up with a pigment ink while tucked away in storage. I had not used the pen in at least one month, perhaps two. And I uncapped it and it wrote straightaway. That’s worth mentioning.

When I tried to write with it, it was clear that it needed to be returned... This type of fountain pen is clear evidence that the world is not perfect. But like everyone else, I want to live the illusion of perfection in life…:)
Yeah, writing samples seem rather useless in most cases. Only a few companies have that level of quality controll, that a writen sample of one pen could even be remotly close to a pen of the same model.

The problem is that the pen is not an italian pen....
You'll find many trolls on this review. I bought Jinhaos, used them, cleaned, refilled, until I came to conclude they're a waste. If the pen doesn't write, is not worth any of my money. Thank you for a video of this company, your opinion does matter, please don't bother about Trolls. Take care please🎉

I bought one a few months back that was exactly like yours - transparent - and mine wrote very spotty. Cleaned it before filling it. After I inked it, it wouldn't start. After 10 minutes of getting it to flow, it then was spotty. Very closely checked the nib and made sure it was properly seated, etc. I cleaned and tried 3 other inks, same results - hard start and very spotty. FINALLY, got a more consistent inkflow. Capped it, let it sit for an hour. Came back, and it wouldn't start. I have over 100 pens and while there are some that had a hardstart, none ever did what this Jinhao 9019 did. I was VERY VERY disappointed because the size was perfect, I enjoyed the transparent look, etc. I have some friends that swear by it and others that have the same results. BUT, I'm not willing to gamble on inconsistent quality control issues. But, I'm glad the pen was inexpensive - I just chucked it into the trash can.
I've had the same issues with Jinhao nibs (particularly the 82 model). I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who isn't willing and able to either do some basic nib work and/or replace the nib entirely.
