    Namibia was under apartheid South Africa when it got its independence in 1990.. I am glad I was there during the celebrations and inauguration of President Nujoma. Under apartheid, mainly black, colored and Indian groups were forced by law to live in own communities.. The development of both South Africa and now Namibia, which was then called South West Africa was done on the basis of separate residential areas.., under the legislation of what was called the "group areas act' of apartheid South Africa, if I remember correctly.. Namibia today is an exact replica of what South Africa is today.. Thanks for the video, heart-breaking as it is...

    Namibia's coloured comminity has it's roots in the Cape Province of SA. They are ppl of mixed race. Genetically they are very similar to the Rehoboth Basters and both speak Afrikaans, although the accent and dialetcs does differ.
    Basters are offspring of Nama and Dutch settlers. In the 1860s with mounting pressure from the Boers a group of about 90 families trekked to Namibia. They initially settled near Warmbad in Southern Namibia, but in 1880 they settled in the area of Rehoboth. At that time this area was home to the Bondelswart, a group of Namas. If you want to see a great population of Basters, Rehoboth would be the place. Coloreds are scarted in Urban areas of the coast and Windhoek (esp. Khomasdal area).
    During apartheid the white minority government had a system of social stratification, where white citizens had the highest status, followed by Indians and coloureds, then Black Africans, this included where people had to settle. So you find locations even in Namibia and SA wherever there are more coloreds/basters than others.

      Very informative ,and spot on. I am happy that you had mentioned the Indians as apart of the colored people, hence,, when they travel, to this day, act very privilege'.

      Thanks for the information.. I came to the first Namibia independence celebrations from South Africa... I remember hearing about Rehoboth and it being the hotbed of resistance to Namibian independence from South Africa, or something like that.. I guess the whole thing fizzed out with time..

    Colored people are not necessarily just a mixture of black and white people. You can have someone with dark skin who is also considered colored. They're not biracial but rather multiracial, with a mixed ancestry ranging from Asians, mostly Indians, Europeans, and other African groups, mostly the Khoikhoi or Bushmen. They're not black, nor are they white; they have their own distinct ethnicity, similar to the Latinos of the Americas who also trace their ancestry to Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans.
    For example, popular South African musician Tyla identifies as colored, not biracial. The colored ethnicity is an individual identity and culture on its own. It's not as simple as just black and white - there is a lot of complex historical intermixing that has formed the colored culture. One instance is the Dutch settlers mixing with the Khoisan, giving rise to the Basters and Afrikaners who speak Afrikaans.

    • @M_KK
      @M_KK 6 місяців тому +1

      @kish_myworld it has changed. But you need to remember some homes are generational homes. In Windhoek, Khomasdal was a coloured neighbourhood but as more and more coloureds sold their homes black people are now a lot there.
      Same for for places like Windhoek North and West. These two used to be whites only, but now 90% black. Newer suburbs have a balanced mix of ethnicities.
      Even in Katutura the neighbourhoods were divided according to ethnicities. So you find Ovambo location, Nama location etc. So naturally even now majority of people staying there will be of a particular ethnicity since those are generational homes.

    The people were devided by the Afrikaners when they build houses they build houses for blacks and different houses for coloureds and basters and then for them selves also far from each other and thats alsp how it was with the treatment a black person was treated badly than the colored or baster by the whites same with the salary a black perspn and a coloured and a white person might have the same position at work but the salary back then would be different according to your skin color, some things only Sputh Africans and Namibians can understand cos they went through the same apartheid regime and apartheid was different from colonialism

    • @victorlionelnazaire685
      @victorlionelnazaire685 3 місяці тому
