Modal Masters: Percussion and Effects with ARGON8

Get an in-depth look at some creative ways to make synthetic drums and percussion effects in your own productions. Using the fast workflow of the Modal App, we'll create some new sounds on the fly. We'll then take those sounds into Ableton and explore some effective ways to blend the percussion in with side-chain compression and Xfer LFO tool. This instalment is shown on an ARGON8 but also applies to other MODAL synths, like COBALT8 or COBALT5S.

Anyone attempting to make synthesized percussion should watch the first 17 minutes. I bought an Argon 8 in 2024 and have applied these techniques after watching the video multiple times - but - I also own a Roland SH-4d and applied the knowledge to that unit as well. The teachings apply to any synth with a decent mod matrix. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing the fun of tweaking this synth. I think we can inject this kind of percussive effect with music like Dangdut or campur sari from Indonesia and sure more others.

Wow thank you James - been trying to make a decent percussion patch, made a few myself, but haven't yet achieved the complexity you accomplished here. Awesome tutorial. Ended up using the animation lanes to fake-sidechain in non-daw playing mode. not quite to the extent achieved w/ableton, but almost as much.

Thank you. I am much more interested in wilder sounds. I have so many sound sources that I'm looking for what Argon8 can offer that is difficult or not available from other products in my battery. I would much rather present a sound that tells you itself that it is not a drum or a drum simulation. The intro to 'Being boiled.' by The Human League is a long term favourite in this area.
