Just a quick comment: Hear the bishop, but we need more Altar Boys. In many churches, the girls have taken over. Complex reason, but cannot dispute the fact that at the same age the girls are filling the need and the boys who may be less attentive (as the Bishop noted) don't feel as competent to help out and step up to the challenge. How do you get boys to join?
If we are to restore and build a Catholic community in a world that is increasingly secular, we need to stop treating the Mass as a relativistic entity whose expression changes according to the tastes of the laity and priests and pray it with reverence in accordance to the formulas provided in the Roman Rite in both the Extraordinary and Ordinary forms of the Mass that diminish the personality of the people and gravitate toward Jesus’ sacrifice.
Bishop Coyne is simply repeating the approved discipline of the church, and has done so with clarity. We are pleased to have his episcopal service in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
I grew up in the eastern orthodox church Only boys were allowed But when I went to a friend's catholic church, I was surprised they had an older boy and girl
Mt 19:8 “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so." If Christ is commenting at all about the changing times, he is saying the opposite of what you claim, that just because times change doesn't mean God's law should. That said, girls on the altar is not a matter of divine law. The Church has authority to rule either way. But it is disingenuous of Bishop Coyne to claim that vocations have no relation to altar serving.
I think we are not supposed to understand everything.. We are to wonder and think of the personal meaning.. Maybe that’s why Jesus always spoke in parables.. To me Jesus was saying as times change man should change also (within reason) Now back to the question about girls serving as altar servers… I think if Jesus was here and we asked Him this very question, I believe with every fiber of my body he would say it’s fine…
For every girl in the altar as servers one less chance for any boy to have the vocation to be a seminarian. It is sad to ammit that this is the main reason why the priesthood is in decline.
It is a blessing that women want to participate in the Mass, but we need them to make scholastic apologetics for the Church that may evangelize the world before and after the Mass and perform Gregorian Chants during the Sacrifice of the Mass.
I have served for serval bishops and cardinals, as a girl. I see no problem in it, if we wanna be close as possible with god then let us do. For god we are all the same!
In my parish now the young boys think that altar serving is intended only fir girls . My parish posted the need of altar servers and included a picture of only girls in cassocks 😞
n his encyclical "Allatae Sunt" of 26 July 1755, Pope Benedict XIV explicitly condemned females serving the priest at the altar with the following words: "Pope Gelasius in his ninth letter (chap. 26) to the bishops of Lucania condemned the evil practice which had been introduced of women serving the priest at the celebration of Mass. Since this abuse had spread to the Greeks, Innocent IV strictly forbade it in his letter to the bishop of Tusculum: "Women should not dare to serve at the altar; they should be altogether refused this ministry." We too have forbidden this practice in the same words in Our oft-repeated constitution Etsi Pastoralis, sect. 6, no. 21."
I'm sorry. I have to disagree. Kids should not just be learning what's going on at mass by serving. At that age, they should already have a very good idea of what's going on and the parents and the Catholic schools are responsible for ensuring this. The Church is in deep crisis. We have to get back to tradition. That is what our children need. Allowing altar girls doesn't change the fact that we are doing a terrible job of being good Catholics ourselves. You say in this video that it's great to see altar servers doing a wonderful job celebrating the mass. The problem with this is that you are excluding all other children who are not altar servers. What purpose does allowing girls at the altar serve? I seriously never understood this. What message does it send? Are we now thinking that Jesus wanted female clergy as well?
What a disaster, we have no priests, and if your parish doesn't have the spiritual substance to produce an altarboy you will not produce a priest. St John Paul II roundly condemned the practice. This is just another innovation that first began in rebellion then was slowly legalized. Just like Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist also an innovation begun in rebellion.
Bishop with all the respect in the world but every pope and church leader must be looking down on your comment notting there heads. Allowing girls to serve as a acolyte is mid leading they can't ever become a priest , leave it to the boys . Shame on you father for promoting this , pope John Paul bless his heart and his soul was not thinking correctly when he made this ok
I appreciate the point he makes about mothers and grandmothers being the ones who most often encourage vocations in their sons and grandsons. I hadn't considered this factor before. I would have loved to have been an altar server, but couldn't back in my day. However, I encouraged my children to serve. I managed to raise a server and a Eucharistic minister and catechist. I'd be thrilled out of my mind if any of my kids would go on to develop a religious vocation, but that's in God's hands.
This bishop diminishes the consequences of using altar girls. While not all priests served as altar boys, it is traditionally a men's role because they are serving at the altar in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Also, it undermines the seriousness of the issues surrounding the Great Schism between the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. The Orthodox will not return to communion with the See of Peter with the Roman Rite permitting the use of altar girls.
Our behavior that permits altar girls promotes hermeneutics of discontinuity within the Mass, ignores Our Lady of Fatima's command to pray for the conversion of Russia, and on our part as the Roman Rite, in relation to the other Rites in union and in schism with Rome, betrays Jesus command to be ONE. This is why figures such as Cardinal Arinze and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI discouraged the practice.
It was when Jesus was talking to the Pharisees about marriage and Divorce, The Pharisees said God to Moses a man could divorce his wife and Jesus said it was because man had hard hearts then Jesus added as times change man must too…
🤣🤣Comment thread is so funny. R. Catholic Church worship statues and talking about faith. R. Catholic Church is the funniest church I've ever seen. Orthodox and Anglican Churches are better than this thing called Roman Universal Church. You must remember original Bible was not not in Latin. St. Peter is not a Pope.
When you made it sound as if having male-only altar servers is treating ladies as if they are second-class citizens, you crossed the line, your Excellency. That was inappropriate and an un-called for shot at those who have simply maintained the traditional practice that is not only ages old and has been promoted by Pope Pius XII, but on a practical level DOES lead to more overall altar servers. I stopped listening when you said that for obvious reasons.
Boy! This Bishop was at the time of this taping a prime example of the "piling on" of the feminization of Holy Mother Church and how these modernist bishops and prelates managed everything they could to apostatize Her. "Table!" Your Excellency!? The Altar of God in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as "table"? God forgive us all for this mess we are in. "I will go to the altar of God, the God Who gives joy to my youth," is the call to the unbloody sacrifice at the foot of the Altar of God. How dare you, Bishop Coyne, trivialize the Eucharistic Banquet in order to appear "hip" and "up with the times" in front of a camera. You may have had a smile on your face when taping this piece, but you should be trembling in your bed at night while imagining what you may have been a part in while helping to lose the souls of men and women who have walked away from Holy Mother Church. May God forgive you if, in that hope, you asked for His forgiveness in confession since making this video.

The problem is the Bishop considers the Sacrifice of the Mass a "celebration at the table" - Instead of an "altar" they have "tables" now, and a "supper"
excuse me...Don't you read the scripture??...St. John declares...
"(Revelation 19: 9)
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage SUPPER of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
==============
THE Eucharist is BOTH a sacrifice and a Supper of the Lamb....
I've been serving so far for about 4 years I'd say, and my opinion on serving has not changed due to the young women I serve with. I understand tradition, but its crazy to me for people to think that girls serving would have an impact on the young men who serve as well...
It does impact men because girls have no business being on the alter . The whole point and the theology of the altar server is so that the server can think of going to the priesthood
@@ragejinraver Girls can use it to think about becoming a nun. If a boy stops being an altar server because of girls, than I would seriously question his devotion and calling to begin with.
@@fernandofunez9344 Again comments like you'res proves people like you know nothing about the faith . I also love how you also try to use shaming language to try to bash men in general . Don't think I didn't catch that and by the way Nuns don't offer the Holy sacrifice of the Mass . So how is being a girl alter server going to help with a becoming a Nun then ?
@@ragejinraver you make claims but not arguments. Being an altar girl can strengthen the faith of the girl. Funny you attack me by saying that I use shame language when you started your statement by shaming me. Guess what? In the entire history of the church while arguments were made for altar boys only, it was never stated that it was wrong to use altar girls. Do you think that Jesus really cares? Being an altar girl can be benefitial for the faith and devotion of women which is also important and doesn't stops altar boys from becoming priests. There is no actual arguments against the practice, just assumptions and preferences.
@@fernandofunez9344 I make claims not arguments what are your talking about . That proves that you know absolutely nothing about Catholic teaching you are the typical modernist . I bet you don't even know anything about the 4 last things and most likely you even believe that Jesus is literally body blood soul and divinity in the Eucharistic . Why don't you watch videos from Dr Taylor Marshall and other Traditional Catholics and educate yourself before trying to argue with me . Because your not going to beat me in a Theological argument . I've got the 2000 year old Tradition of the Church to back up what am saying what do you have . Modernism thinking from Heretics
And now we have women arguing for the right to become deacons, they don’t want to be nuns anymore...altar girls are a bad idea
Only clergies are allowed to enter the altar (passed communion rail). Therefore, only clergies can be alter servers such as acolytes. Due to shortages of minor order (acolytes). Vatican gave indulge, so lay male can take place of acolytes; hence, clothing of altar server are clerical clothing without Roman collar. If female altar server is allowed, then it's also a potential for female to be priests. To know our Lord & His true teachings, please look up Michael Voris at Churchmilitant.TV
And yes people reading this, check out Churchmilitant.TV! Mr. Voris and company simply are relaying basic and traditional Church teaching the way our ancestors knew it! I HIGHLY recommend you all to check it out to learn about the TRUE faith. Mr. Voris is a humble man who isn't afraid to speak objective truth, please go!
If you think it's a good thing, then you're not worth listening to.
He is a great guy and good teacher!
Maybe he is but just not on the idea of alter girls
Our team of servers in our parish is balanced in male and female servers originally it was done by only male servers.
Notice how we are divided amongst ourselves? How can we unify the world to God if we cannot unify ourselves?
If we are to restore and build a Catholic community in a world that is increasingly secular, we need to stop treating the Mass as a relativistic entity whose expression changes according to the tastes of the laity and priests and pray it with reverence in accordance to the formulas provided in the Roman Rite in both the Extraordinary and Ordinary forms of the Mass that diminish the personality of the people and gravitate toward Jesus’ sacrifice.
I'm a female and i'm an alter server.
What about now
Bishop Coyne is simply repeating the approved discipline of the church, and has done so with clarity.
To me Jesus was saying as times change man should change also (within reason) Now back to the question about girls serving as altar servers… I think if Jesus was here and we asked Him this very question, I believe with every fiber of my body he would say it’s fine…
unfortunately ChurchMilitant TV is not endorsed by the producer's local bishop, and Bishop Chris Coyne actually is a bishop of the Catholic Church.
So sad, pray for these bishops!
For every girl in the altar as servers one less chance for any boy to have the vocation to be a seminarian. It is sad to ammit that this is the main reason why the priesthood is in decline.
It is a blessing that women want to participate in the Mass, but we need them to make scholastic apologetics for the Church that may evangelize the world before and after the Mass and perform Gregorian Chants during the Sacrifice of the Mass.
im a altar server and its nice to finally have equallity
I disagree with you Bishop! Revert back to tradition!
That's sad
It's great! All engaged in various aspects of outwardly showing love and commitment/ caring of God!
dear bishop,
you are not obliged to implement it.
back to tradition!
n his encyclical "Allatae Sunt" of 26 July 1755, Pope Benedict XIV explicitly condemned females serving the priest at the altar with the following words:
"Pope Gelasius in his ninth letter (chap.
We love our Altar Girls!!!
Cringe
I have a question- can girls be cross bearers?
Good question
Bishop with all the respect in the world but every pope and church leader must be looking down on your comment notting there heads. Allowing girls to serve as a acolyte is mid leading they can't ever become a priest , leave it to the boys . Shame on you father for promoting this , pope John Paul bless his heart and his soul was not thinking correctly when he made this ok
Coming from a former altar girl for someone that worked for a past pope...... please read some more books
No no and no
I appreciate the point he makes about mothers and grandmothers being the ones who most often encourage vocations in their sons and grandsons.
Amen. Praise be to God. :-)
Hi I am a Alter Sever but I am a young lady age 29 going on 30. And I have some thing to ask you hope you can try to help. I am from New Hampshire and at my church we do not have may Alter Boy's or Girl's at all. So I sever a lot at my church but there is one thing that just happened this past week one of the adult sever tall was gives me a hard time and it all was happened was our priest is a way. She like bossy to me and the
other severs. What can I say to my priest and how shod I tell him ?
Great answer and didn't Jesus saay something like this to the Jews... " As times change we have to change too"...
No
Truth never changes
If you have a bicycle, that is not allowed to be on the road, why put training wheels on
I disagree
Shame on you mr. coyne
You need to watch some Church Millitant.TV your excellency. Ive lost all respect for this show. Will no longer be watching it...
Woman can read the world of the God, they can sing during the mass they can even play the musical instruments but just alter serving is not allowed for woman not because woman are weak but because they can't be priest since that is particularly for men. Woman, can still be hospitality servers
Yeah but there’s not a single role that only lay women are allowed to do and men are banned from. And for kids there’s really nothing a girl could do if not altar serve
I won't be watching this channel anymore. Bishop Coyne - your superior wouldn't agree with you!
It's need more training father.
I am a woman and altar girls just feel wrong to me
UGH...
Informative video, but the constantly changing background is annoying.
As Catholics we never see women as "second class" citizens. My evidence? Mother Mary, Mother of our God and Savior and the Queen of Heaven and Earth perhaps? With all due respect for the office that you hold bishop, WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I'm surprised that you even attained the position of Bishop with that heretical way of thinking. Altar servers needs to be boys for it has always been our tradition in the Catholic Church. That doesn't mean women are of less importance. That notion is only the stance of leftist liberals and feminists.
I pray to God that that way of thinking does not reach or take hold on other countries where Catholicism is deeply rooted. i.e. Italy, Brazil, and the Philippines etc.
As a non-American, I really don't understand where do these American bishops get their line of thinking which is in direct contrast to what most bishops in other countries would preach.
This is NOT righteous
