- I have started to learn the #trumpet 3 months ago as a personal #challenge. Here is a quick video update. I have now spent a total of 54 hours working with the trumpet.
Any critics & advices are welcome!
I've played for 6 years and I'm top in my honors band and I wasn't nearly this good my very first 3 months WOW
TheFr0stiestSn0wman ! He practices too much lol
i think he has a bigger advantage since he play clarinet but yes his progress in this amount of time is still incredible.
same! in my first 3 months i could not even play the C propperly!
currently playing for 2 years (febuari will make it 3 years!!!)
Ok that’s what I thought !
I’ve been playing trumpet for 2 years now I know it’s not that long but he is really good for only 3 months wow!
As a trumpet player myself, that’s very impressive to have come that far in only 3 months. I can tell that you’re keeping your lips and face relaxed which is a great thing and is hard to do, so keep that up. But also, try using more air when you’re playing-brass players play brass instruments because they want to be heard, so don’t be afraid to play out!
“Learning trumpet for 1 year I’ve made the Chicago symphony” 😂😂
Nice. The choir I'm in sung the world premiere of Jubilate Deo back in 2016. Makes me jealous I wasn't in it at the time.
Could you possibly put together a playlist of videos you used to help you learn? It would be much appreciated :D
Keep going! I've been playing for a year now and watching your progress after 3 months is very motivating. What you've accomplished in 3 months took me twice the amount of time. You are great keep it up.
Ayyye that’s some good progress!
Great improvement. Make sure you’re starting off by tonguing and not just blowing air into the horn.
spinner spanker Not really, I’ve experienced with that in band settings and the director always seemed to like it more for more melodic pieces, when changing notes though, you should most definitely tongue the notes. It sounds much more beautiful starting out with air just going into the horn as it doesn’t have as jagged of a start.
I feel like in the last video he (and a lot of beginner brass, myself included) had the opposite problem. He used his tongue as a crutch and didn’t let his lips learn how to initiate the note.
@@liiam2200 when in this case it sounds choppy
Good job! Always great to see a new trumpet player honing his craft.
I suggest using more air to improve your tone. On brass instruments, lots of air is the key to a good tone.
Gorman HexSteed Coming from the previous video, you can definitely tell he’s working on it
I agree. also he sounds good but I don't think he's articulating enough
Lots of vibration is the key to a good sound. Open teeth, wide cavity, and good embouchure are what get a beautiful tone
Really nice to see your progress!
Oof! The Force theme at the end... actual chills. Well done!!! Inspiring to say the very least!
Hey, great work you've done here and it's great to see inspired people working their buts off to get good at something! One tip I can recommend for finishing notes is instead of a) cutting them out with your tongue (only in jazz should you do this) or b) just letting the air die, you can breathe in at the end of notes to cut it off cleanly. When I visualize my air for a note I imagine pushing a paper airplane with my breath, fighting not to make it go up or down until I hit the end of the note and it runs into the wall right at the force it started with. Keep up the updates!
In 20 days a high G, respect ✊
Flippin 'eck. Great progress in a very short space of time. Well done!
Great progress! A few tips: maybe think about how each phrase, whatever it maybe, needs a consistent flow of air. Sometimes we can get a tendency to push air for every note rather than one long line. Also, maybe start thinking about tuning. Make sure you pull out the slide for your D. Tuning can definitely help with reaching pitches! Good luck 🙂
Excellent progress
Good job man! Good luck in the future and great playing as well :)
It's fun seeing people being interested in playing the trumpet, your videos made me happy!
Can't help saying this though: your right hand fingers should be rounder and your left pinkie should not be in the way of pushing the valve out with your ring finger in order to make the d and the c# not sharp.
Really well done! - I've been playing for just over 2 years and try to play for at least an hour everyday - as you illustrate so well, it is a real game of perseverance with such a tough instrument! - There are good days and bad days and patches where it feels like no progress is made and then all of a sudden a real jump forward is made - I am sure you find the same.
Anyway, keep at it and continue to update us on how you get on.
Out of interest, have you considered having lessons? - my wife bought me a couple after about 6 months of playing and they were so helpful that I have kept them up about once monthly for a couple of hours - They really help to break bad habits, give motivation and made me focus on things i was not doing right, embouchure, finger position, etc, etc.
Also highly recommend getting a copy of the Arban to work at although it is a bit tedious sometimes! :)
Wow, you really did a good job of getting to not use your tongue as a crutch and freeing up your air flow from the last video. Good job, man!
I bought mine yesterday wish me luck :)
Already 3 month... And still sounds better then my trumpet line in marching band
Dawg I’m about to pull the trigger on the $100 amazon horn!! Inspirational
These videos are really interesting! Great progress, man.
Question for you though Sébastien. How do you record your trumpet playing? It sounds really good despite you being a beginner. How do you do it?
Use your tongue to start notes, use air support to hit higher notes rather than using force and pressure, and keep an open embouchure (aka leave some space between your teeth so air can pass and keep the tone open and warm). You’re doing great so far especially seeing how quickly you’ve learned it, just focus on tone quality and centering each pitch and you’ll seem like you’ve been playing for years! :)
Sounds great! Did you have any brass or woodwind background before beginning? You're an inspiration.
Pretty good progress. I guess what I'd say to work on is clear articulation on clear changes of notes. But really good sounds for your first 3 months
Cool, good progress keep us up to date. Have you managed to practise during the confinement ?
Have you been practicing after that challenge? Or no? This is what was you remembered
Yes, I haven't stopped to practice since the initial 30 days challenge! After the challenge I was at 30h of practice and I am now at 54h after 3 months :) Thanks for your support, it helps me to keep the motivation!
@@SebMusicForLife please make another progress video.. coming up on 2 years?
Nice progress! I suggest working more on long tones and softer dynamics!
You’re doing great after three months!
A couple things I noticed.
You seem to be tense holding it and it sounds like your throat might be tenses up. Remember to be relaxed while playing.
Your pinky should never be in the pinky ring unless you are snapping the horn. (You won’t that’s a marching band thing) Let your pinky rest on top of the ring or to be free sitting on nothing. It will help with your hand being tensed and allow you to finger faster. Something else that will help with that is using the very tips of your fingers to move the valves. Be quick and sharp so you change notes right on time. Try not to be sluggish, it will muddy your transitions.
Other than those small things your doing great! Just play or practice every day and you’ll get much better with time. Over time your tone will get better overall. Happy Playing!
Edit: idk if you played it in this video but I think the Mexican hat dance you were either tounging with a “da” sound or slurring. Make sure your attack uses a “ta” syllable behind your teeth so the note is crisp and clear.
Impressive! You have probably already heart but a book grate for beginners all the way to professionals for working on sound control articulation and technique is: the Arban. Just do the first pages for a good time and eventually you will be able to do the harder stuff, it cover all you would ever need to know. I'm studying the trombone, but still spend at least 20 minutes every day on the first pages of Arban, and all the trumpet players I know do as well. At least the good ones;)
I suggest you practice with a tuner and play scales very slowly if you haven't, and make sure the d to c is a bit smoother. other than that, this was really inspirational and your hard work is showing through. Have a nice day Sébastien! :)
How did you record the trumpet and mix it to where it sounds so much more angelic??
I've played for two months im in 8th grade and I can hit an e above the staff as well im now 5th chair in my band im coming for first
Above the staff e? That’s like 4 ledger lines
@@warriorsanjay ikr @Chase Martin yeah right
Maybe the e but not e 2 months
@@brodymichaels3729 ik ive been playing for like 4 years and highest i can hit is above the staff c

You sound great! I would make sure to get even more air and to maybe try using a bit less pressure.
The first two song my favorite if i learn any insturment the first 2 song will be the same Autumn leaves and summertime :D
Sounds great - hopefully you're still playing. If I were in the room with you giving a lesson I would advise putting more gusto behind it, be more aggressive about filling up the sound with more air, not to be so "delicate" and reserved in attacking notes. Also opening the teeth and mouth cavity slightly more for a more full sound. Also snap the valves down quickly - curve all your fingers.
Not bad,you sound really good for how long you’ve been playing
awesome! ! Keep going! I want to know how you are playing now. I am using Google Translate.
Hey Seb, just wanted to say both 'thank you' and 'damn you' for encouraging me to buy a trumpet! I've played Sax for years and thought 'how hard can it be to play trumpet?.. This fella did really well in 30 days'. Ha, ha, ha... well, I've found out it's really friggin' hard!! But I'm playing pretty much every day as I've seen the progress you've made and know it's possible. Any tips or practice suggestions most welcome. Cheers!
@@visco09 Oh my god.. I didn't know that and it's so sad. What an inspiration to be taken so tragically.. RIP Seb
@@visco09 Good day. I was wondering, how do you know that he passed away? Really sad to know if this is true..
Sébastien was my guitar teacher. He was a very good person.
@@visco09 merci pensons à sa famille.
Hey Sebastien, honestly, do you think we can reach this level in 3 months ? Or you are talented and we should maybe think about a year - if we do the same number of hour.
🎉
When you play, it almost sounds like youre nervous
💪👍
I would recommend looking into the arban book. My fellow trumpet players refer to it as the trumpet bible. It has valuable material that is useful for beginners and experts alike.
After 3 months I was the best in my band class and could play a double g above staff
This is my 4th year playing is a high e above the staff
I was expecting you to play “it’s been a long, long time”
Try the Flugelhorn next...
Can you play the song 'It's been a long long time'??
Which trumpet are you playing?
Make sure to work on your sub pedal tones... i find that stability in the extreme low region helps with the extreme high register.
As someone who learned baritone in a couple of months for marching, nice
I would do more long tones tho and focus on tone and flexibility those really do be the hardest even as a person with a music background, also don't wear out ur chops doing high notes especially if ur squeezing them out. Ruins ur chops for the whole day
Which trumpet do you have?
Yamaha 4000 series? 4335G?
This really goes to show how important practicing is. Whoops. PS Long (looong) tones as quiet as possible can help with many things. And good support from the stomach. Playing the trumpet doubles as an ab workout (not really but let me live)
Try tuning
Try Learning some vibrato, it makes long notes easier to listen to and just sounds nice in general.
do you still play the trumpet?
Good but try to switch throughout your partials a little more cleaner
Sounds good, and you have a pretty good range of notes! You should practice faster songs now (like wipeout)
Playing that well in the months? Color me impressed. I’m in 8th grade and I made region orchestra, but I was not even near as good as you in three months. Keep up the good work! I would say that you should work on breath support and just overall quality of the notes!
I'm in 8th and I just got my trumpet today! I'm so excited!
I can play up to high A
Tjpagute I can play up to quadruple octave Bb
DeepboxVDM nobody cares
Tjpagute i can play a quintuple double double C sharp
I can play high F# but my braces fucked it up
HOW IS THE TRUMPET GOING

You can tell that he's been practicing close to daily lol.

Your Trumpet is really good. Mine is having steel valves. Tye stuck a lot while practice. You still need to work a lot on inntonation and try to bring more fuller deep resonant sound. You are facing pinching at some place and your slur is also not consistent. Accents are also weak and there is not confidence and musicality in the playing. Please have a instructor and trining before attempting any recording. Remeber its not a competition, Music is for praise. All the best.
I think more work on dynamics and your attack of notes will help out a lot. Here the attack of each note sounds aggressive and blatty.
Learn trombone :D
as much as I want to see that, I'm a trombonist myself, if hes this good at trumpet already, we wouldn't him to start both and be mediocre at both
Will Strauch I didn't mean he should learn it *right now* , I'm merely suggesting he should learn some time in the future.
0:26 Is that a jojo reference ????
Try producing a good tone the whole note and not letting off at the end but rather use your tongue to end a note
0:27 ayo this kinda sussy
longest minute and 14 seconds of my life
That's cause it was 1 minute and 44 seconds
Sure he's learned the fundamentals that doesn't mean he's a god or anything I played for less than a year and did more than he could. Everyone has their own way of learning and everyone learns it at different time. All he has to do now is work on breathing and fixing up his embouchure and tone and he would be pretty good.
