Good things come to those who wait! I can't believe it happened! 4 years later Cruel Summer has hit number one! WOW! Let me know below what the song means to you and when you fell in love with this magical song? Also let me know what song you want me to deep dive next!
i feel like call me maybe should get one
did it hit number one ? i thought drake ruined it
i never realized how this track really is its own mini Eras Tour in a song 😭 ugh your mind! omg Taylor is a mf genius!!!!!! Taylor is a legend…
Taylor's probably going down as one of Pop's best minds... no joke she's truly a one of a kind talent who will always be the pinkprint for future artists who want to dominate 🩵
The rise of 'Cruel Summer' is just proof that so many of her non-singles could have the potential of becoming a smash hit. And knowing that she's re-recording her past albums, she could use this opportunity to re-release her underrated songs as singles or her Vault tracks as singles. Either way, I'm hoping she uses the impact of 1989 and Reputation to create more top-charting hits (which I doubt she won't do lol).
We need to see Getaway Car finally hit the Top 40 since it was dropped right as streaming actually started to matter. I feel like Don’t Blame Me bc of the tour will also probably smash. Honestly, I see 1989 occupying the Top 40. 😭
@@EljohnMacaranas YES. Also, for Reputation, I think 'Dancing With Our Hands Tied' or 'Gorgeous' could also work for singles as well. As for 1989, literally any song could work XD.
OMG Dancing With Our Hands Tied needs a renaissance, the unique structure with that fun little pre chorus that disappears
@@EljohnMacaranas Fun Fact: It was actually produced by the same producer for the Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights'. So, if that was one of his biggest smash hits, DWOHT could also have the potential to be a hit.
OMG that honestly tracks! Wow!!!
Lover as an album feels like the essential Taylor album, like it’s the album you need to play to convert someone into liking her music. Lover has like a wide array of songs, and also demonstrates Taylor’s lyrical genius. Like cruel summer is an iconic pop song but also feels linguistically intense. Lmao
I think its timing in 2019 (a really competitive year for pop where every week there seemed to be a new smash) stopped it from getting the attention it deserved! Lover is a great starter record for modern post-1989 Swift. It has some proto Folklorian lyricism but charming inviting melodies and an airiness to it that’s echoed on Midnights!
Lover was the album that converted me! Literally had been proud I managed to avoid listening to a TS song for the 13 years before that and now I love her because I read that lover was different and gave it a listen lol. False god ftw.
False God getting an SNL performance 😭🩵
It not only avenged but completely redeemed the Lover era, when Lover was slandered by media & public for juvenile singles and performative activism, its now remembered for being home one of her classics.
I’m so glad it has a redeemed legacy! The single choices in hindsight were bizarre but a learning moment. Midnights was extremely successful bc of momentum but also wise single choices!
I don’t know, I kind of love lots of songs in Lover… like daylight and lover…
@@gerry8381 same here its homes some of my all time faves
Deep cuts are def one of her best.
But i find it very difficult to listen to it as a whole body of work. Many fillers, outdated pop tracks & out of placs, completely unnecessary songs makes no sense in album at all
It was mostly adored in fans, public & media reception was worse than reputation.
I would remove I think he knows,Its nice 2 have a friend,Me,paper rings,i forgot u existed ,london boy.
You need to calm down is fine sonically but the performative activism makes it sick. The Man is very forgettable.
Add All of the girls & "Need".there we have one of her classics.
@@gerry8381 what i meant is its rollout, single choice remains her worst to date.Aint no way a mega pop star in her 7th album would choose disney/kids bopz rejects as lead single.
But now with massive success of Cruel summer,Lover era seems redeemed.People now remember it for gr8 songs like CS & title track Lover.
Cs helped clean off the stain of singles & performative activism a bit
My fav song is Miss Americana & Heartbreak prince.
Also CS,Death by 1000 cuts,Cornelia street & the archer.
@@adiawasthi4589 so you don’t love lots of songs of Lover, you would cut a lot of them… And they are not unnecessary, you can dislike them, but not everyone share that opinion
Cruel Summer was my most streamed song of 2022. It is absolutely one of my favorite Taylor songs ever and from one of my favorite albums of hers.
The taste shown here. It’s immaculate!
I always wished Cruel Summer got its flowers with how messy lover was. Now, can we do the same for New Romantics?
New Romantics is gonna go top 10 I think!
YESSS
She has so many potential songs to become hit singles like Cruel Summer
- Mr Perfectly Fine
- Getaway Car
- Don't Blame Me
- August
- Hits Different
- New Romantics
- Message in a Bottle
Hits Different genuinely should have had a push!
Lmao New Romantics was the last 1989 single, it legit has a mv but bc this was during 1989 swift was over saturated in media and music and the immense sense of the previous singles had this one overlooked
@@brandonphan1847New Romantics flopped because she didn’t care enough. It shouldn’t even have been left out of the original 1989 😭😭
lover stans we are finally out of the trenches!!!
We did it kids! No more “flop era” allegations. Number 1 4 years later, outselling Midnights this week (I was gagged)
Free from the shackles 💗
Prediction: Someday Taylor will Beat Madonna and be the biggest female pop star of all time! And I can't wait!
Honestly, it seems like a natural conclusion. Fitting given Madonna is an artist herself defined by her own eras and transformations.
I never noticed the similarities between the two, but you are so right about Cruel Summer being the spiritual successor of I Wish You Would (which also deserves to be a single)
I Wish You Would (TV) for Top 10! We can do it! Though I know the vault track, Slut! is probably going number one.
Man, it’s kinda crazy how Taylor wrote to track with Jack for it and now 10 years later, they’re the top dogs in the songwriting pop game!
@@EljohnMacaranasCan't wait for the release. I Wish You Would is my favorite song of hers. Thanks for recognizing the sheer perfection of a pop song that is IWYW
Cruel Summer is one of the songs that got me into being a swiftie in the first place so I’m really happy about this🥳🎉
Honestly, it’s such a good entry song for everyone. I’m shocked it wasn’t the lead for Lover but time’s a funny thing and even if it feels “late”, it happened now for a reason!
Cruel Summer is just such a glorious song and moment for all the swifties and Taylor herself 💖
Deserved global smash hit
I love Cruel Summer and has been one of my faves from Lover and her discography. It's sad we never got the music video for it. I'm sure it would've been fire 🔥 😁
One day… they might as well at least post the live tour version from the movie 😭
Wow, what a remarkable climb! I check billboard every Tuesday morning, and I cannot wait to see this song at the top.
It’s crazy to me how long it took to catch on and how fan driven this was. It was slow and steady like watching a cult film find a big following!
I am not the biggest taylor swift fan, missed most of her albums and "big" singles. Started listening to the songs in the pandemic. Cruel summer was an instant hit with me (we were all in a cruel summer after all in 2020). Had no idea it wasn't a hit on the charts, only found about this, this year. Hope it gets a video. I also loved Archer.
Archer’s so underrated! It broke my heart it was cut from the Eras movie, I hope to see it on an extended cut!
When lover first came out the archer was my favorite track I don't think I got into cruel summer until 2020.
The Archer is so underrated! That song inspired a script of mine (I do that as my “real job”) that actually did end up going somewhere and if it ever gets produced, I will force whomever makes it to buy the rights to the song to use!
I love 'The Archer'! It's like the 80s-influenced prototype of Anti-Hero.
@@EljohnMacaranas when I learned taylor swift drew inspiration for the song from the movie/book series "Hunger games" I knew immediately why I loved the song. 🏹
@suspiciousstar7547 YES! It’s like a slowed down cousin that plays at prom for a slow dance
Taylor has been my fav since 2014 so it doesn't surprise me that even now I still love her ❤ she's a genius
Literally, we’ll still be stans in 2034!
A bridge so good she sings it twice. 🌸
Such a banger!
Thanks for another great review! Cruel Summer has been one of my favorites since Lover was released and I’m so glad it’s finally hit the #1 spot! Singing the chorus with everyone at the concert this summer and at the movie a week ago was incredible-you can tell how much love we have for this song.
Thank you so much for the lovely comment and the Super Thanks! Man, singing the bridge at the show was probably one of the happiest moments I’ve had in years. Summer 2020 was probably the cruelest summer of them all so it was cathartic singing that in a space with Taylor who made it bearable haha
Given the resurgence in popularity for both Cruel Summer and Lover as a whole, I can only hope that one day Taylor releases a true deluxe for Lover. When she finishes re-recording Debut and Reputation, Lover will be her only album that doesn’t have a set of bonus tracks whether that be vault tracks or songs on a deluxe version of the album. We could count All of the Girls You Loved Before but that was released mainly because it leaked months prior and she wanted to celebrate the start of the tour. There are a couple of other tracks like Need that leaked around the same time as All of the Girls and it’d be cool if we could get official versions of them as well.
Honestly, Lover likely has a few demos that’d do pretty well to be released. I recall Lover never had a deluxe due to being so long on its own and deluxe versions falling out of favor for rereleases towards Grammy season. I feel like she’d be apt to do a Lover Vault Edition maybe for the 5th anniversary next year!
@@EljohnMacaranas Yeah you’re right about that. 18 songs on its own is a LONG album and she didn’t follow the trend of shortening the track length for streaming purposes either. Red TV had 30 tracks and it was still incredibly successful so she definitely could add on another 5 or 6 songs to Lover and none of her fans would mind. Lol Fingers crossed we get something because the album definitely deserves it.
I love Taylor for breaking so many rules like we need a 27 track Lover like I know there are at least 9 tracks out there (idk random number but my gut feeling)
Damn. This is a perfect analysis. Are you a musician? The breakdown of how Taylor adds the subtle synth in the bridge and how so many song close perfectly. The reflective comment of Love Story makes perfect sense. That was when I found Taylor (Love Story).
Thank you! 💖 A couple of my friends are songwriters and composers! I’m a writer myself but rarely ever songs but still I really study structure of things to emulate them in my own work. Swift has always been a fave of mine because of her adherence to the craft of like doing things “the old fashioned way.”
@@EljohnMacaranas you should keep up writing if you enjoy it! I play music. I know I won’t go beyond a hobbyist but it’s very fun.
I love the “old fashioned way” comment. There’s so many parallels to her and Paul McCartney. Their humble career beginnings of grinding and writing more surface level songs to the evolutionary explosion with each album starting around their 4-5th album (Rubber Soul and Revolver for Paul).
It’s wild-as a gigantic Beatles fan-I feel that Taylor is as imaginative and creative as Paul.
They even both had legendary production collaborators (Jack for Taylor and George Martin for Paul).
Lover is underrated and yes a Lover review essay please
Oh for sure, I was listening to it and musically there’s a lot of food for thought
Ok so I am ashamed to say I used to not be a fan of Lover, but I have changed! When I gave a listen to Cruel Summer after the whole interpolation drama, and also watched your video essay on Lover, I gave the album a second chance looking past the singles, and the album has some of her greatest deep cuts!!? Even the slower songs in the back half of the album give a glimpse of folklore type writing and sound. It was really songs like Me! And You need to calm down that stopped me from giving the album a real listen. But I am glad I have come around to it 😊
It’s definitely a jumbled record if we go by the singles and a stellar little gem if we listen to the deep cuts!
I don't know if we ever will get a music video for it but if so I think it will be a new romantics style celebration of the tour
I’m hoping we get the actual footage
i applaud the hustle, eljohn. to record and edit this clip in enough time to be able to drop it when the news about the placement hit the press? kudos.
in another lifetime, i definitely was a newspaper columnist waiting to yell “hit the switch” as the presses begin to print
This is such an amazing video. I've been watching your catalogue and the way you make the videos is amazing.
Thank you! Keep your eyes peeled for an August surprise later this week!
@@EljohnMacaranas My eye are wide open 👀
I've been crying for a few days now over this
Me tonight and the rest of the month when we get the Vault Tracks! 😭
@@EljohnMacaranas ya for sure.
@@EljohnMacaranas I streamed this song soooo much and every week over the summer it fell short by time it hit number 1 gave up thinking it would be the week before, we have been trying since before summer started. This definitely is another "trenches" moment for us swifties but the best trenches ever
from the moment i heard cruel summer the first time in 2019, i just knew that song was meant to be number 1
Man, thinking about 2019 and how wild that summer was and all the hits, I’m glad Cruel Summer finally got its time to shine!
I knew this song was going to hit #1. … as soon as I heard it on the air tour it confirmed that it’s gonna be an explosive spread
I’m praying and praying and praying there’s a video
We need a proper music video with visuals and concepts! 😭😭😭 or at least tour footage in 4K of her singing it at LA
I remember discovering it in 2021 and being SO confused on how it was SO underrated. I’m so happy Cruel Summer is having her moment ❤
She’s finally spreading her wings and soaring 😭😭😭
I never thought about the similarities with I Wish You Would but it makes so much sense now that I think about it. Well spotted! Loved your breakdown of what makes Cruel Summer the quintessential Taylor Swift song
Aaaah thank you so much for watching (and yes! I Wish You Would’s so underrated I feel like Cruel Summer is its poppier hotter cousin sure but IWYW is the punky sister who’s in her late 30’s holding out for Prince Charming)
Congrats tay ❤❤ I wish Lover and Rep had loads more No.1s (getaway car, delicate, daylight, The man) but this is still a great success 🎉🎉
Oh Delicate and Getaway Car needed to go #1… too ahead of their time
This news made me so happy despite me not really caring about charts, but it was surprisingly since Drake literally just released an album. But really, I should've expected the music industry to land on top
Oh the Music Industry is never frontloaded… she’s back to her 1989 longevity strategy
She meant it when she said she comes back stronger than a 90s trend
Oh hands down… never goes out of style!
thank you!! for giving love to I wish you would!!!
It’s such a good song! Ugh! A classic!
og cruel summer & lover stans we will ALWAYS WIN.
I’m still laughing at my one friend who had been a Lover hater during the era only to switch-up by the time Eras Leg 1 tickets went on sale 😭
One thing thats really cool about cruel summer success is that each album since Red had at least one number 1 single:
Red - We are never getting back together, All too well
1989 - Shake it off, Blank space, Bad blood
Reputation - Look what you made me do
Lover - Cruel summer
Folklore - Cardigan
Evermore - Willow
Midnights - Anti-hero
We love a queen who has had 7/10 of her albums have a number #1
girl where’s the Lover era recap video? we need one now unless another track hits top 10
Consider it done. (Well, I have to record it first)
You're so right about this song being a continuation of I Wish You Would
It really feels like it! I love her songwriting so much!!!
This song is such a fuckin BOP. It was and is my favorite from Lover and I 100% think this should have been the lead single from the album
Had it been the lead (and the followup singles been chosen a lil more carefully) I do think that whole era would have been another 1989-level smash in its own right.
Call me weird but I love Cruel Summer so much I listened to it's instruments only for years now, even the that is a masterpiece on its own.
The instrumental is genuinely one of my favorites by her
Not gonna lie: For me personally, this song hits different after her breakup from Joe Alwyn and I think that's what triggered me to listen to it over and over again now. While you said that the song is a continuation of I Wish You Would and Delicate, I personally feel that it is a foreshadowing of You're Losing Me (and a complete, ironic 180º of it). It's so painfully beautiful to listen to and one I can totally relate to (at some point in my life).
I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you… hits different (pun intended) after You’re Losing Ne
Oh for goodness sake 🙄
Lover is my happy album, it just is a fun album.
So glad it’s your happy album! It’s such a nice airy record
So now she’s tied with Janet Jackson and a few other artist for 10 #1 singles
I think Stevie Wonder also has 10 number 1’s! What a stellar club!
@@EljohnMacaranas yes Stevie wonder I could t think of the other artist all icons. Tik tok making older songs have massive success is actually really cool. I think it would be cool to see “Thriller” go to #1 eventually
Thriller deserves it so badly! I’d love to see MJ become what Mariah is to Christmas 🖤
@@EljohnMacaranas riggght?? I think it peaked at #4 back in the 80’s.
OMG never hit #1, let’s change that! Probably next year!
The fact that Cruel Summer hitting #1 and Lover going back for multiple weeks on Billboard 200 Top 10 in 2023 just proving so many fans/GP love Pop Taylor
It’s crazy the staying power its had!
I was messaging Taylor in 2020 (obviously with no response) begging her to release this as a single 😂
So real!
This song sounds a lot like Out of the Woods
Same producers! Man Jack is a genius sometimes!
@@EljohnMacaranas he was truly fond of punchy bridges/coda 🙂
everybody is talking about cruel summer but have any of yall hears industry baby by lil nas x???? 👀👀👀
OMG I love that one! 😭 Where is he?! Lil Nas X has to come back
My Queen.
She’s so mother!
Me! Gets such a bad rap. It’s actually a really good song, especially played acoustically.
I think it's great but not lead single material
No Because When I saw the Eras tour movie I was shocked that Cruel summer was in Lover I never paid attention to it
It was such a deep cut a year ago, only like absolute die hards would flinch if you referenced the lyrics 😭
I’ve always thought it was so badly underrated! The first time I listened to the album I immediately made the worlds shittiest art from the line “He looked up grinning like the devil” and only took it down when I moved earlier this year
Hahaha I had a stencil I made in my old room that said “Liver” 😭
Lover is in my top 3 albums from her
I have it in my Top 5 but it sneaks to 3 sometimes, I think it’s such a dense work there’s a lot to love. It’s not a quick listen like 1989.
I think Swift really regretted not releasing “Cruel Summer” as the first single from _Lover_ back in 2019. It would have a different reaction than “ Me!” as the first single.
Welp Swifties already knew it would be this influential and grand when the album came out...Glad that Lover has her own #1 now. The album was phenomenal and i personally loved how it dealt with so many different themes from politics to sexism to love.
I still can't believe it was a "flop" era back in 2019... granted the space was far more competitive but she really outlasted and outdid the competition.
@@EljohnMacaranas ikr, honestly 2019 was great ..we got NFR, Thx u next, lover, father of the bride etc.
P.s ur channel is so cool lovin the content
Thank you!
She's great, and so is this song, but boy am I getting burnt out from Taylor oversaturation lately. Plz don't come for me Swifties I still love her 🙏
I think after 1989 TV she’s gonna take a brief little break, maybe do a holiday EP at most in December then announce Rep and Debut TV towards the middle of 24 then truly just take time to rest. I was thinking as I watched the Eras movie yesterday, how do you top this?! I’m certain she will but yeah I’d love for her to rest up.
@@EljohnMacaranas insert "its been 84 years" meme here
@kail_red I just know if I were her, I'd nap for a whole week (then go back to writing bangers) but at least a week of sleep bc idk how you do 3 hour shows, fly to and from NFL games, and just be the President of Pop like that
wanna know what pushed this? see the concerts in argentina and brazil
oh no doubt… LatAm is truly the best
As someone who's only became an "official" fan over the last few years, who's been using the TVs to get to know her older discography (even though I already know 1989 pretty well)... Taylor Swift has too many excellent songs!! 😱😱😭😭 Cruel Summer is just one among a shit-ton of them. It's insane, it's mind-blowing, it's even a little annoying. I could totally not listen to any other artist or band if I'm not careful with myself.😅
It really is Taylor Swift's world.
Oh I’d say 2021 was a year I nearly exclusively listened to Swift between Fearless, Red TV, and the leftover magic of Folklore and Evermore like… it was too much all at once!
@@EljohnMacaranas over the last few years, the only breather we really got was the first three fourths of 2022. 😅
I KNOW!!! Omg I need one after Rep and Debut pls 😭😭😭
I find Lover to be one of her best
It’s an album that really just cycles in and out for me, when I’m into it… it really lingers for awhile, definitely her definitive Summer album in some regards
Lover era was cut short due to the pandemic and the release of Folklore before getting its own tour, also the main single choice was not great, Me! seemed like a nice radio bop but it wasn't what her fans wanted. Cruel Summer clearly would have been the better choice back then. So I'm glad that it finally gets the main recognition it has always deserved, even though I feel like my little secret is out now 🤣🤣🤣 I've been playing it repeatedly since 2019^^
Man I’m sad it’s not a hidden gem but I’m glad everyone knows the bridge!
@@EljohnMacaranas I mean apart from being a Swiftie I'm mostly a metalhead and 80s darkwave/goth lover so I have my hidden gems there still at least ^^
I disagree with Cruel Summer being the better choice for a lead single. It caused quite the commotion in the fandom with speculation into her love life, and she would have been torn apart by the media, especially since trying to recover from her media blackout with reputation. In 2019, the music landscape was very different. I feel Lover would have done excellent in 2010, and clearly it's doing well now. Something about the timing of everything was just off.
Now let’s not confuse being restrictive/controlling, with being wise.
ME! is a terrible song and Borchetta would’ve made the right call not to allow it on the record, let alone being a lead single.
Even for Speak Now they made the right call by giving the record that name and not the one Taylor intended.
Taylor is a genius and for sure is talented, but she needed that bit of confinement to help her career trajectory going upwards and not downwards.
For sure in some aspects BMR was way too restrictive, but many times they made the right call, for example by excluding MIAB from the original Red.
Let’s not forget that Taylor got to the point where she is now also thank’s to the years she spent under BMR and following their guidance. Otherwise she probably would have imploded much earlier like Katy Perry did
That’s fair to a degree but I can’t help imagine if BMR would have ever let Folklore or Evermore happen especially during the pandemic.
Katy’s downfall was particularly tragic but arguably a mix of self inflicted wounds (not addressing Taylor feud, disappearing for 3-4 years, joining Hillary 2016 political campaign, being extremely “corny”) and stuff out of her control (Dr Luke being the worst, uplifting pop falling out of vogue, switch to streaming model.)
I think Taylor being able to recalibrate after Lover “flopped” was great since Midnights itself always felt like “what if Lover went on without a hitch/had good singles”
THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING I WISH YOU WOULD
Literally I’ll never stop talking about how good that song is!
No cruel summer pick up where getaway car leaves, not delicate.
oh i was talking if it had been the lead single instead of me! it would have been able to continue that thread
All The Girls You Loved Before deserved a spot on Lover.
OMG YES (and Need!) I think there’s a bunch of tracks we never got (mainly those done with Dukes and Bell)
@@EljohnMacaranas All The Girls is a beautiful song
The harmonies on it, I think that was a motif from Lover that needed to be more prominent
i thought Cruel Summer came out this year. how did this song did not make a hit before?
Taylor’s team meant to make this the touring single for Lover Fest but the pandemic happened and she moved on to Folklore 😭
I think you need to calm down turned off a good amount of fans and that’s why the album didn’t do as well. But the songs are great on it. I love cruel summer!
That single did pretty well on its first week or two, even hit #2! I think majority of the damage was Me! looking back. Delicate and Rep Tour being loved brought back some hype and acclaim and it died so fast that April morning.
Google “Taylor Swift through garden gate” and see who comes up. Hint: it’s not Joe
The top result was a reddit thread saying it was Joe for me lmao

💖
Wow I usually agree with you but I completely disagree that this song actually turns around at the end. He looks up grinning like a devil is a guy realizing he has power over her to me. She's still trying to play it cool and her desperate admission is met with an evil silence. It's fun to sing bc it's a little healing to yell at someone like who was featured in "I knew you were trouble." It's cathartic to relate to having a crush on someone who lead you on and wasted your time and then didn't reciprocate. The awful conversation in front of the vending machine where one person is feeling all the emotional stakes and the other person is just a long for the ride or worse feeding off it. It was amazing for Lover which to me was completely about how anxious love is. I don't think there is a genuine calm love song on it. Even LOVER the title track isn't romantic. It's very much one person wholly dedicated to a deep relationship but the other person is only putting in a fraction and maybe absent.
I agree with everything else 😅 cruel summer should have been the lead single. "I forgot that you existed" is probably the only calm happy song other than calm down.
swiftie 4 life !!!!!!!!
When we’re on Era 20… we’ll still be there!!!!!
I wonder when and how she'll go for the egot
Emmy for directing/TV special
Grammys (she has a lot)
Oscar for direction or writing
Tony stage play of her music
@@EljohnMacaranas I'm a new swiftie but I'm a performer- I feel like she could do similiarly to Sara Bareilles w/ Waitress. I don't know if she could necessarily write the book for a musical but songs most definitely. Could she get an oscar for her eras tour movie?
Oh the book seems likely, I wish Eras was eligible but it’s not a documentary, though the Oscars should and could have a concert film category one day since so many artists do those now
she copied the song! check the song "STYLISH" by loona
