Another pro tip I learned in studios was to make a sync beep on the beginneling of your song. Playback the tracks you want to taped en and recordback the tapehead immediately in the DAW. This way you will make sure your sound has all the tape features but you can sync them to your multitrack after you sync the beginning beep. You beat relativity
I bounced three tracks to a Revox B77 as part of the mixing/mastering process just to see what it would do and I was really blown away. Tape saturation and warmth is exactly what people say it is, I just had to experience it first hand to not just see it as hipster snobbery. It makes things come alive!
The internet works in mysterious ways… I’m actually working on a video (that will be out on tuesday) about mixing to my A77 and now this video pops up in my feed!? Great video, and what I hear you also noticed that its a fine line at what levels to record at! ❤️🙌

Excellent. This is my personal recipe: I do what I called "analog buffering", using a 3-head cassette deck recording harsh or sterile digital sources onto a TDK AR-X cassette in real time (cassette playback mode ) connected to digital. recorder or CD burner. By recording and playing back the tape simultaneously, I can monitor the sound and make precise bias adjustments. Wow and flutter is reduced by a factor of 1/2. Good tube like sound on a CD.
Thats wild. I always wanted to do a A/B test regarding this. Something in me says its better to rewind and play thru but I could be saving a lot of time!
@@vvundertone Yes you can do a full rewind and play thru but this is equivalent to an analog transfer for me and not 'buffering'. A solo piano or a guitar will sound much more fluttery ( Cat Steven's Tea for the tillerman) A specific tape formulation is needed according to the results you want to make. Personally, i love super ferric tape's The simplest and fastest way is a tube buffer between your source and your recorder. Musical Fidelity X-can for example. But the tube buffer does not coulour the sound as much as the tape does. The tape is still much more "dirty"
The problem with these kinds of tape decks is that the low end becomes crunchy and you don't have a clear and punchy low end ,you might want to low and high pass two tracks and see if that helps, anyway the good tape recorders used in studios are to maintain resolution because they go faster but also add something special. the transient are smeared in a nice way!
Totally. With the work I do I’m not concerned with getting a mix sounding let’s say Dr Dre 2001 I’m more into Madlib style sound. So I like (some) crunchy..But I am always searching for different sounds so I may try this hipass ty!
I would actually leave certain instruments out like drums and bass and do higher instruments like synths and guitar, or maybe just a certain instrument that you want to stand out. I also just thought of something while i was typing, it would be cool if you just did the reverb through it
it was fun , it was, must say i have a few of this tape baby's my self, now am thinking should i make a video like that as well, you just inspired me , thank you 🙂 ah forgot, great video to watch and fun as well 🙂
nice channel and videos also! pls can you Advice, which mark or type TAPE you best use to REVOX a77, last week i find this machine in good condition and buy it
Congratulations!! You have found a legacy piece. I use RTM tapes. Check my recent video about tape mastering. Included is an affiliate link for 10% off. I use LPR 35 but started getting into SM900 which takes more gain thus allowing you to combat hiss better when recording quieter material. But if your slammin meters any of their tape is amazing!
This is a highly slept on technique which is very accessible and very cool sounding. You can use a fresh stock vhs for something crispy or find some dusty 1980s horror movie and get some cool lofi warble. Although blending the vhs signal with digital maaaaay be a tad difficult. Let me know how it goes! And I might try too :)
Hey Man, thanks for making this video! Do you have any issues of the tape speed not being exactly in sync with the original file? I tried to put drums thru a cassette deck but an its not in sync anymore after a couple of minutes. That means it messes with the timing and everything sounds off. Would love to work with tape but it seems not really reliable.. :(
Ah yes this is common with certain tape devices. The more cheaper or out of maintenance the more likely to experience drift and timing problems. If you have a more professional machine this is less likely. But in the meantime I would suggest committing to the tape drums from the start. So make your drums, bounce it to tape and back to the DAW. Produce the track on top of the tape drums. It’s ok to make music off the grid sometimes in fact I highly recommend it. Give it a try at least once!
@@vvundertone Yes thank you for your response! In my case it's a live recorded Trio Setting. So it won't work. But in case anyone has the same problem I found a plugin called AutoAlign Post wich helps a lot!!
Hi! Love your channel! Do you need to have a "record"-button on the tape maschine to be able to sample it into logic, or can one just playback "through" the tape and get the sound?
@@vvundertone Okaj! Better get one of those then!!! Thanks for inspiring me man. Going through some stuff rn and you really lift me up with your videos. ☀
Right? I have been searching for a VST piano that doesn't sound like generic cold unapologetic nonsense for years. My friend you must get Spitfire Sampler, the sound is "Soft Piano" and its even free!!
Loving this channel! Can't get enough of it. Great vibe all around. What drum samples are these? Can I get them in a specific sample back that you made? Thanks.
Thank you! When I make music I dig thru all my packs and pick whatever one shots speak to me in a new curated folder and then give it a name. This time I was using "gallery" & "compact flash summer" on the first 3 songs. The last part of the video is from a live drum session of me improvising an I haven't completed that edit yet. If you tell me specifically what sounds you like I can upload the compact flash summer on the site?
Nice vid man! I`ve been using tape lately and my AKAI has a very nice sound, but when i bring back the music to Logic, he messes up with the tempo, sometimes its ok, sometimes its faster or low. How do you deal with it?
this is the bane of my existence. A truly perfect machine is very hard to come by. I just get to know each one of my machines. How long each one can stay in sync. I stick to that length. Or I format my song around the tape and say screw the grid. Which I know is not ideal especially for most producers. But for the type of music I truly love, 60s / 70s...grid is not real. OR I just stick to short 4 bar loops and repeat them. Its always a challenge. Syncing warbly cassette to video is one of the most challenging. But as I say in this video, I never want it to be easy. The fight makes it all worth it.
@@vvundertone well, o think we fight the same war! I dont think that fallowing the grid is a good deal, but sometimes i want to put the kick and SNARE in the two channels, and in another Record o want to put the over and the Room Mic, normaly i need tô send and Record in the same take! Anyways, the hard work always pay off! KEEP the good work man, good Channel for producers with vintage problematic gear!
I recommend RTM. For this video I am using some recycled old tape. Since switching to RTM I have been able to control the tape hiss much better which to me is a big plus.
Hi - great sound!!! I also record on tape - did you use some noise reduction unit or some in post? I am surprised how low level of hiss is in your video.
Just pulled up the original session and there is 0 noise reduction used at all. This was a new old stock high quality blank tape which may of helped. Although I am no stranger to various noise reduction techniques and you gave me a great idea for a new video!
@@vvundertone it could be still alive , that thing is so heavy it broke a step , but who knows maybe it is still in working condition , I'm just afraid to switch it on again aha
So far so good on my part. None of my machines has had any issues. But it’s important to know someone who care repair. I live in LA and I’m sure there’s a handful of people who do this stuff I just haven’t found them yet.
Some plugins do a decent job! But if you can find one of these old machines cheap you won't regret it. Plus the value will only increase, opposite of plugin investment.
"Annoying digital frequencies" - not sure what your referring to here. Unless your sample rate is ridiculously low your digital recording will be quite literally capturing whatever you recorded in from your instruments.
what I am referring to is your point. Its too exact. I like shooting film because it enhances the scene, adds a little magic. I feel recording to tape is the same. It gives me back something different than whats in the room. Color, texture, etc.
