    Your studio is paradise 😍😍
    I'm not loving this effect for my stuff, but it sounds great on this song

    • @thomas_juth
      @thomas_juth  2 місяці тому

      Yes, it is a dream to work there. 🙃 It is actually not my place personally, but I love working there for specific projects and when I feel that I need more of an analogue vibe. Otherwise, I also enjoy working purely in the box too.
      About the effect, yes, it totally depends on the song, and not every song will work well with these sorts of effects. But at least it is something you may come back to later when you feel it calls for it :)
      Anyway, great to hear from you and thanks for watching!

      I actually mix a lot in the box myself, but when I work with a console (like in this example), I always use it as a summing mixer. It's definitely the best way to work, as it gives you the sound of the console but the autonomy from the DAW.

      Great question. For me, it’s mostly about feel, but I also like to push things to the extreme on purpose. I start by making the effect way too loud compared to the original sound, then I make it too quiet, and from there, I move toward finding the sweet spot in between. ⚖️ 🎛️
      This works well for leveling reverbs too-first, make it so quiet that you can barely hear it, then bring it up until it’s too much, and finally, settle somewhere in the middle. From there, you can fine-tune as needed. That’s how I approach it, at least!

      @@simsfister2940 Hey, no worries! So, a summing mixer is a way to take all the individual tracks from your mix and combine them outside the computer, using analog hardware.
      Instead of merging everything digitally in the DAW, you’re sending those tracks through actual gear, which can add some warmth and character to the sound. It’s a subtle difference, but it can make the final mix feel more cohesive and glued together.

    Left confused by the signal chain in here.
    1.) Create ADT, separate left+right and add FX (no reverb)
    2.) Create Dry, filter high/low, send (add 4s decay reverb as insert 100% wet)
    3.) Create +12 pitched vocal with bent formant. (send to reverb 1.5s decay)
    but then out of nowhere at 4:35 you say "and now I'm sending both of these into my valhalla reverb..."
    What are you referring to as "both of these?" Obviously #3 (+12 layer) but didn't #2 have a 4s decay reverb on it?? There's no way you're sending that to another verb right?

      Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. And yeah, you’re partly right. I’m using a doubler called ADT as a part of this process, but I’m also playing around with other layering effects in this video. As you perhaps saw, it also involved playing with the formant and adding reverb that was pitched. So there were several parts to this effect.
      Again, this was just me playing around, having fun, and trying to create something that was right for the song. And yes, you’re right. Part of it can be replaced with a doubler, but the other parts of this process were taking that further into something a bit more unique.

    • @greganikin7003

      @ making things complicated doesn’t usually work. You were having fun that’s absolutely fine. You could also have soundtoys pitch plugin set before reverb and have it as a send aux and have exactly the same sound. And honestly, this fx you created doesn’t fit this song much + the reverb is way obvious and colored, it drags away the attention from the lead vocal.

      Thanks for watching and great question! 👌🏼
      I’m not sure I would use this effect in a song with several harmonies, especially Beatles-style harmonies, as it may get a bit too thick. But, having said that, it could also be cool depending on the context, of course. If I tried it, I would probably only add a lighter version of this, perhaps only on the lead. Or maybe send them all into an effect as a group. But it's definitely something you'd need to play around with and see if it fits the song :) If you try it, feel free to share a link and I’d happily check it out!

    question: why would you just always print stems in stereo if the source is mono? You're wasting space and the time it takes to render a stereo file as well as import it. IOW, what benefit do you get? Seems like you're making your CPU work extra also for no reason. Just send the mono version to the effects and the fake doubling will be panned left/right anyway, yes? Just seems illogical to print a mono source to a stereo stem. thx

    • @thomas_juth
      @thomas_juth  2 місяці тому

      Great question and thanks for watching! 👌🏼
      I print stems in stereo-even for mono sources-because it allows me to retain all the stereo information in the mix, including any panning, spatial effects, reverbs, or delays. These stems are printed when the mix is finished, through my mixbus, to capture the full stereo image for later use.
      For example, while a guitar might be mono at its source, once I add stereo reverb, chorus, or panning, it now lives in a stereo field. Even simply printing it in a stereo stem preserves its panned position, whether it’s hard-panned or centered.
      Printing the stem in stereo ensures that all this spatial detail is preserved and can be recalled later without needing to reprocess anything. It’s particularly helpful for consistency when revisiting or reimporting stems, ensuring everything lines up in the mix just as it was originally intended.
      As for file size and CPU load, the tradeoff is usually minor compared to the benefit of keeping the mix as flexible and ready for future use as possible. Hope that clears things up! :)

    • @TruthSurge
      @TruthSurge 2 місяці тому +1

      @@thomas_juth oh, I get it now. When you said "stems" you mean POST-effects. I was talking about stems that are raw. Like having just a copy of the orig recording. But you mean some stereo file that represents that track as a whole so you could create a mix again w/o actually having all the settings. So okay, I get it. You'd have to render in stereo for most of that except bass guitar maybe. Or anything you know is literally mono but only panned. ok.... me understand. :)

    • @thomas_juth
      @thomas_juth  2 місяці тому

      @@TruthSurge
      Exactly and glad it makes sense :) And yes, I’m mostly talking about stems I print after the mix is done, so I can bring them back if we need changes later. This is especially important when working on consoles where recalls are difficult.
      I print all stems in stereo, even if some elements like bass are in mono, to ensure consistency and prevent any level changes when re-importing the stems. I want everything baked into those stems to keep the mix intact.
      In this video, I used older stems from a mix I did two years ago, so the drums and vocals were already mixed, which is why you saw me using stereo stems. Sometimes I also balance stereo stems during mixing to reduce track count, but the key is preserving the stereo image in both cases.
      Anyway, have a great day! 🙃
