  • Over two million Americans suffer from opioid use disorder, leaving them unable to stop using certain pain medications or dangerous drugs like heroin without experiencing extremely unpleasant effects. Peter Manza, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is exploring how those patients’ brains change when they take medications that help them stop using opioids. He hopes his work will decrease negative societal attitudes towards those treatments and encourage more patients with opioid use disorder to get the help they need.
