Something I forgot to mention: For Air NZ A320 jet flights between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown, with a scheduled flight time of more than 50 minutes, departing Monday to Friday between 4:35pm and 7:05pm, except public holidays, there are additional snack and drink choices. New Zealand wines, premium beers, cider, L&P and Coca Cola No Sugar are added to your beverage choice, served with cheese and crackers or a savoury snack.
Another great and interesting trip report JW! I remember watching your flight come into Sydney on that windy day! I do prefer Air NZ even on a domestic service. Fun fact for you, you do receive free wine and beer on domestic (jet) operated flights between 4pm and 7pm weekdays. Isn't the approach into ZQN stunning and thrilling, it's a captain's only landing as well!! Keep up the great work!
I notice this too and AKL terminal is the worst terminal in nz IMO out of the major cities. Chch terminal is probably my favorite terminal followed by wellington as they dont have that many good cheap food places in welly
That was a nice comparison, Jayden. Definitely some pros and cons between the 2 airlines and you outlined them well. I guess we all have our preferences (e.g. cheap fares, full service, good facilities, etc.), so it's nice to have options. I didn't know that Australia's major airports are privatized. I can see how that could give things a different feel than government-run airports.
Oh yes don't get me started on the Aussie airports. I can get over the expensive tax, LHR is worse. But they charge fees for public transport, whereas pick up & drop off is free! It's 2024 and they're encouraging people to drive 🤣 - Sydney Airport $16 on top of the train cost - Melbourne has no rail link... public buses don't go to the city. Private bus costs about $20. - Brisbane $10.95, when the rest of the network throughout the whole state of Queensland is now 50c!!. Oh, they all charge for the baggage trolleys too😮💨 Adelaide no rail link but thankfully they have free baggage trolleys (which they advertise on all trolleys LOL) and no public transport surcharge. That's why I chose to live there for 9 years haha!
Very enjoyable and a good comparison, I flew Qantas only trans tasman, Wellington to Melbourne on a 767 and internationally on a Boeing 747, Sydney to Hong Kong. I only flew Air New Zealand in 1993 long haul from London via L.A. to Auckland. So never really flew NZ domestically, but did fly Ansett Australia domestically in 1994 as was flying 5 hours on a 737 from Sydney to Darwin, the service started in Melbourne and finished in denpasar. I work in corporate travel so it is good to have those little snippets of info I can pass to my clients. Thank you.
Kia ora... love air nz, lately my airfares have been great too.. I love Auckland and thankfully they're building an integrated domestic/international terminal as we speak . 😊
Unfortunately, the "integrated" terminal will cater for only domestic JET services; regional flights will, apparently for now, remain in the current domestic terminal. This beggars belief. Why bother spending billons on an "integrated" terminal that, in fact, is not. It's a job half-done. Seems ridiculous. As someone who flies through both the international and domestic terminals about twice a month, I was astounded and disappointed to discover this.
@@nikserof2183 ughh fgs, moan moan moan, aia have literally said they haven't decided yet re the regional flights, give it a bone dude, It beats the current t monstrosity , I can't wait to use it, and it looks beautiful, ciao
Great video Jayden! I would chose Qantas domestic due to the entertainment and wifi as well as the more comfortable seat, also I think Qantas international is also far superior, overall I would say Qantas is the best airline outside of Asia with Air NZ second!
Well I would say the service on Aegean Airlines is a lot better than Qantas. The Greek carrier offers a great service to European destinations. Other western carriers that are superior to Qantas include Air France, Swiss Air and even good old British Airways have really improved lately.
I flew Air NZ from Wellington to Christchurch earlier this week. I originally got assigned seat 15C, but I got it switched to seat 3F at the airport free of charge despite me only being a basic airpoints member. I can't survive without a window seat despite a 30min flight. It was a group booking so maybe thats why??. The flight between WLG and CHC is around 30mins on the A320.
Glad you got a window at the end plus the extra legroom! I was originally assigned at the back too (aisle and middle). But I wanted the window for the Queenstown approach and the agent changed it for me :) Group bookings do usually get put together
Great video as always! Keep it up!! 👍 Air NZ does have several other planes they use for domestic routes including the A321neo and the A320neo (both have free movies/onboard wifi), and the ATR72 and Q300 for more regional routes. If you ever get a chance to fly on those then give it a go! Very different experiences.😁
I have been on a Qantas 737 from Christchurch (NZL) to Brisbane (Australia) in economy, it did the job well no complaints at all., IFE / Food & Drink and seat select all inclusive on my ticket fare. JW…Kia Ora to you and 6 Foot 4. Great TR as usual and very informative, fair and equitable. I really enjoyed it. You hit the nail on the head in all areas of your commentary and yes I work for Air NZ so I am a bit biased. Hi Bobo! Thanks for your input :) I actually learnt a new word from you - antipodean - so thank you. I've always loved my trip to NZ, but it was always during the winter. I hope to visit again in December, would love to swim in the lakes. 🤣
For a 1.5 hour domestic flight, either airline service is much the same and perfectly adequate. However trans Tasmania, give me an Air NZ 787 or 777 any day over the ratty Qantas 737s.
I would certainly choose the Qantas Domestic over the Air New Zealand, mainly because NZ doesn't serve alcohol? Deal breaker! The vibe on Qantas seemed nicer too. Did you spill something on your shirt here at 10:30 (at the into before the NZ flight)? :Nice trip(s) reviews though!!

Lounge access is not something most Kiwis can get. Lots of Kiwis were taken up to the cockpit or handed out sweets in past years, it's a fond memory.
I was reading the Air NZ inflight magazine and it was fascinating how short some regional flights are. Not surprised how some flights replaced some highways essentially!

I did Virgin Perth Melb Queenstown economy x, and Air New Zealand Wgtn Auckland Perth business class. ANZ were using the Vamos leased plane to perth and although the staff were nice, but wasn’t that clean, I’d never fly business with them again. So I’m not sure if I’d fly ANZ again on a leased plane. And I’ve flown premium economy ANZ and loved it Ak Perth years ago.
Thanks for your review, not very often I read reviews from others. 🤣yeah haven't heard many good things at all regarding Air NZ operated by Wamos. That has ended now thankfully. Hi Jayden and thanks for this video, an interesting "concept" video but would be very beneficial for those who don't travel on both domestically. It is a little unfair to compare the 2 because AIR NZ will always come out second best. This is because Qantas fare structure and business model is very different than AIR NZ. Qantas economy passengers always do better because everything is included for the standard fare of AU$287 but standard AIR NZ seat + bag only is NZ $274 so not much of a difference (the fare you quoted must have been a heavily discounted sale ticket). All that said, IMO Qantas domestic beats AIR NZ domestic hands down every time (even the lounge - ever tried AIR NZ lounge during peak? It's horrendous lol). How about you compare Qantas international with AIR NZ international? I reckon AIR NZ would be the winner (except for those awful seats lol)
haha first I will need to budget as Air NZ international is very expensive. My intention wasn’t to say Qantas is better because they obviously are given the price. But just to show people what you can expect from both national carriers :) I could do two seperate trip reports but people are getting bored of Qantas 737 videos haha. I looked on Google Flights and you can get Auckland to Queenstown (seat only) for USD67 on most days! Qantas charge a minimum of USD121 for SYD-ADL. SYD-MEL USD97.
hmmmmm ... ok then ... I'll fund the SYD-AKL leg so all you need to do is fund your AKL-SYD leg ... I can take you into the Qantas 1st lounge at SYD 😁😁😁
Hey Jayden. I was wondering if Qantas serves their SOFI drink on 737 flights internationally or they just serve those on wide body planes? Gonna fly Qantas in October on a Tokyo-Brisbane-Queenstown leg, and I really wanna try out that drink when I first have the opportunity. Best regards from Norway🇳🇴
Fun fact, for some reason Air NZ is putting wifi on their domestic ATR fleet as well as the jets… who knows why we need wifi on a 15 minute flight to Nelson from Wellington but we can say we have it soon 😂😂
