The zero conditional in action - English grammar
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 лис 2018
- Zero conditionals are a really useful and simple English grammar structure.
We often use them to talk about scientific facts, but that's not their only use.
In this video you'll see lots of zero conditional examples and learn how you can also use the structure to talk about present habits and routines and even the past.
Zero conditionals have two clauses: the condition and result.
We'll show you how to form them, make negatives, punctuate them and reverse the order.
You'll learn about when and if in zero conditionals and cause effect relationships.
And just to check that all is clear we finish with a zero conditionals quiz.
To learn about other English conditionals, check out this playlist: • English conditionals

Oh goodness I LOVED THIS!!! You can see their passion for what they do. Beautiful!
Abi, we are so pleased you found this video worthwhile. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for watching.
I don't understand why you don't have more views. There are millions of fake teachers who are just here for the money and have no real ability or no different approach to teaching English online and your videos are just great! I've already used the one about Present Perfect (difference between American and British use) and my students loved it! What I find amazing about your videos is that you role-play the situations, so you give us the closest we can get to a real example. I always try to teach grammar chunks not focusing in structure as much as I focus in use. So, thanks a lot! You're a beautiful couple and very good teachers. Cheers from Parnaíba, Brazil!
Yes, Arthur, showing English in action we think is a good way of teaching. We're glad you think so too. Thank you so much for the kind words and thank you for watching. Cheers from Philadelphia.

When I Watched your videos every Saturday I can learn lots English.
Great example Nick. I am going to make a correction though: If you are talking about what happens generally, you need a present tense at the start - When I watch your videos... And if you're talking about the past you need a past for at the end - I learnt or I could learn. Hope this helps and keep watching! :-)
It was a very useful video. Thanks for it.
So glad you liked it Kati. :-)

Thank you very much for zero conditional,
I have already learned about first conditional and second conditional
but in this lesson I got it about zero conditional .
That's great Tamana. We plan to come back to this in the future and make some more videos about 1st, 2nd and 3rd conditionals, and also maybe some mixed conditionals.

Your channel is terrific! I have increased my knowledge since I started to watch it. Thanks a lot!
I'd like to suggest you a subject for your class. The difference between " be able " and " be capable ". Greetings from Brazil! Rodrigo
Hello Rodrigo. So glad the videos are proving helpful. We haven't done a video on capable, but we have done some videos on be able to that you might like: ua-cam.com/play/PLwrM2Wcy_MsC_3E-NvDVZwPCfb8RBT-YV.html
I didn't even know the zero conditional existed! Thank you very much! I love your videos, you two have a wonderful dynamic!
Hello Gabriel. So glad you liked it. Yes, traditionally we taught conditionals 1 2 and 3, but there are actually lots of other conditional structures in English. Teachers thought this structure was very useful too, so they tagged it on and called it zero.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos oh I see! Thank you very much. I'm in my first year at university studying English and I had never heard of this structure! Keep up the amazing work! ♥️
Best video ever
Thank you

Rasha, we are so pleased our videos are helping you study English. Keep up the good work.
Wnen I watch your videos I always enjoy your manner of teaching and English itself. 💐🤗
What a great example and a great sentiment too Elena. :-)
I've never heard 'goes off' used with that meaning. I've always been using it to describe something pop out, explode ect or of course as something similar to "turn off, stop existing" and so on. I guess I've been influenced by american english more because 'spoil' in that context makes much more sense to me.
Hello Walkwithant. Yes, this is a British-American difference - one of the many that keeps cropping up in our house. :-)
God bless both of you
Thanks so much Camil Bittar. :-)
Thank you very much
You're very welcome. :-)

Thanks so much for these kind and encouraging words Olesya.

You're very welcome Hicham.
Thank you very much
finally you've got around to making conditionals lessons.
I hope you go through the other cases of if in the upcoming lessons.
Hi Haider. Yes, this was on our list for ages! We're planning one for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and then maybe we can get onto some other stuff I find interesting - mixed conditionals. :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos yes , that would be great and useful 👏 .I'm really looking forward to watching those lessons .

So good and interesting explanation ❤️❤️
Keep going, you are great ❤️😉
Thank you so much for the encouragement kharbashat. Thanks great to hear.
That's useful. Thank Youuuuuuuuu
So glad you like it. Thanks Kevin.
Wow! It is so simple and easy to understand! Let me try:
When I train muscles, they grow!
Buckwheat burns when I forget to turn off gas under it :D
And for me it is easier to use "spoils" instead of "goes off"
Thank you! Have a nice week ahead!
Good job Roman. Excellent contexts and examples. I'm going to make a small correction to the second one. Buckwheat burns when you forget to turn off the gas. I changed 'I' to 'you' there because we can use 'you' in a general sense meaning 'all people'.
Thank you :)
Always lots of good informations. Thanks
So glad it's helpful Lucas. Thanks for writing.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos 😀
Great video! Maybe you could consider adding some guidance about using if...not / unless in negatives?
That's a great suggestion Wildherz. Thank you. It's a very common word and it often causes headaches. It probably deserves its own video, or if not, maybe with some other expressions like 'provided' and 'as long as', 'even if' and 'only if'. Incidentally, we have made a video about the phrase 'in case' which you might like: ua-cam.com/video/-o6w0aaYXRQ/v-deo.html

Another informative video! I've ben struggling with this, when do I have to use "will" and not. Thank you, Vicki and Jay!
Hello Fifa Scott, so glad you liked the video. We'll make another one about the first conditional soon.
@@SimpleEnglishVideos I'll be waiting! 😄
Wow you both hit it out of the park....

Tabish Khan, this is Jay writing. I'm really impressed you've used an American baseball idiom. I'm a baseball fan.
Hahaha! Ok, Vicki, I have to admit I've already breathed helium before and I've really enjoyed it. If I have another opportunity, I'll do it again. It is quite cool and funny. I was hoping for Jay doing the same, hahaha.
Hi Elizabete! Great to hear from you. Yeah, helium is so silly but such fun. I was expecting Jay to want a go too, but then he reminded me he had asthma. For once he was sensible! :-)
Thank your for they help
You're very welcome. :-)
Is great.
Thanks Daniel. :-)
You two are good at explaining English grammar.I always enjoy watching your videos.
In India "spoil" is used. In fact I do not remember the last time I heard "Go off"
Hi Mehrdad Y. This is Jay writing back to you. When I first heard Vicki say "...the mild's gone off", I understood what she meant, but I'd never heard it before :-) Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our videos.
Good job....
:-)
Though the video is long, it is super useful. Do give it a watch till the end everybody.
Thanks for that suggestion to our audience, Sakib. And thank you for watching.
hi!! i’m a fluent american english speaker, but i was wondering if you could please consider making a video of past-tense terms like; drove, drive, driven,,, and how to use terms that are similar to those!
much love!! xx
Hi sleepy dreamer. I may have misunderstood, but this sounds like a request for a video on irregular verbs. We've never done that, but it's a good suggestion. They are so tricky! Thank you.
Simple English Videos yes!! thank you so much! i adore you two so much!!!😭💕💕❤️❤️❤️ thank you for reading my comment!!
Another great lesson...
The interesting part is as ussual, American vs brits.... 😁
We waiting for another lesson
Thank you for your sharing
Wijang Kumoro, This is Jay writing. Vicki and I often have interesting discussions about the differences between British and American English. Since we live in America, I sometimes have to "translate" what Vicki says so our American friends can understand her. :-)
@@SimpleEnglishVideos 😀
Both of you are completing each other. I don't know, who to get more "profit" 😊😀
Oooh thank you incredibly much for talking about conditionals!
I always had trouble with the usage of tenses in conditonals! And I didn't know, that you can use "if" in the past form of a zero conditional! 😲😲
That was very informative and I'm looking forward watching your next video!
I enjoy friday nights, when I don't have to work and can sit on my couch waiting for your new video lesson! ♥
You know what I will be dreaming of this night?
....
Jay wearing a cute school uniform skirt 😂😂
Thank you for this picture in my head!
Btw - I wanted to ask, if your FB group is still active? I sent an application a few days ago. 🙈🙈
I hope you'll have a relaxing, sunny weekend you two! ♥
Hi Steffi. Traditionally we teach 3 conditionals and, while they're useful structures, they are by no means all the structures we use. We thought we'd start with zeros and then look at others. One way of thinking about it is there are real conditionals (zero and 1) and then there are unreal conditionals (2 and 3). We hope to look at more conditionals in future videos.
Thanks for reminding me to check the FB group. You are accepted and sorry you had to wait.
Oh that would be really helpful.
Conditional structure 3 has always been tricky for me 🙈
In school English back then we just read and wrote conditionals in work books.
It was only after I started SPEAKING and USING English in real life situations due to work, that I truly understood how to use diverse grammatical structures such as conditionals. 🙈😅
Thank you so much for accepting my application for your FB group 😍😍
Good job
Thanks Minas-Marsel Bro! :-)
You are awesome!!!
That's so kind of you to say Irina. Thanks for watching.
I am from Ukraine and I am an English teacher). And your video lessons are so useful for myself) and for my students also! Thank you for your work, you are really cool teachers!!!!
My goodness! You people are so professional! So funny! If you breath in helium, your voice goes funny!
Thank you so much for the kind words. Much appreciated. :-)
Hi vicki and Jay, thank you for your sharing. When we use the zero conditional sentences, can we use modal verbs? if we can, what kinds of modal verbs we can use and how to use them?
Hi Mengyang. This is a great question. The zero, first, second and third conditionals are not the only conditionals we use in English. Another way to categorize conditionals is to think in terms of whether they are open or restricted. We can use modals in both types. Zero and first conditionals are examples of open conditionals - open because we have an open choice for the verb forms we use. You can use any modal that's logical for the situation. And in restricted conditionals we use modals too, but the choice is more restricted. We'll try to make a video about them.
That's really amazing and you people provided new stuff related to Zero conditional... espically that past....l.Thanks for that in addition i have a question what will be appropriate to say...
@If u don't work hard,you fail the exam..
Or
@If u don't work hard , you will fail the exam..
Here but *particularl and general* concept confuse me here this is the question i wondered to know before many times but haven't got satisfactory answer yet
Here whether it is fact(truth)or what and if it is fact whether it is particularl
or what...
Thanks.....also i don't ask question to tease or something else like that you both i just want to learn and to be batter than the person that i was yesterday....
Looking forward eagerly for the next video ...
Hello Tabish. Great question about the 2 conditionals. The zero and first conditionals are similar because we use both of them to refer to real situations.
If we look at your first example, you're making a statement about what's always true. 'If you don't work hard, you fail the exam.' It's a fact of life and the 'you' here is a general you. It refers to people in general.
Now what about the 'you' in your second statement? 'If you don't work hard, you will fail the exam.' This you is a specific person. Why? Well this is is a first conditional, so we're talking about a particular case. This is probably a warning you give to your friend or child before an exam.
Hope this helps.
Bundle of thanks...
I forgot the structure, thank you very much.
Glad we could remind you. Thanks Inocencio. :-)
Wow, thank you a lot for hearting every single comment on this video, you are the best!
Well this is a comment I definitely want to heart. I'd wish I could heart it twice. Thanks ImOneOfThem.
