CORRECTION!!!! In 1970, it was still called the R5 350, NOT the RD 350! The RD came out in 1973, and was built until 1976, when the RD 400 came out......
I had an RD350 in the early 70's. It was both exhilarating and terrifying, and it nearly killed me on more than one occasion. It's hard to impress on someone how much performance it had. You can really enjoy that bike, but treat it with respect. Love your builds and keep up the good work!!!
Had one too, a 1973. Thing was scary quick but a blast to ride. Not to mention I had DG heads, pipes and ported jugs on it. stoplight to stoplight not much could touch it.
Back then I was seventeen and the prospect of all that speed on tap was very very attractive, but I hated the smell of two-stroke (still do) ...probably just as well, as I am alive to watch this video, and fit enough to ride a push-bike up steep hills.
the most arm wrenching bike I ever owned, mine had skimmed head, carbs from a Suzuki GT380 +K&N's, empty microns, high compression pistons, balanced and lightened crank, race CD kit, lightened flywheel, it was converted to mono shock with an alloy RD250LC swing arm, Norton Manx tank, everything that didn't make it go or stop was removed, it was like lightening, I lived many didn't, the "widow maker" it got nicknamed here in the UK,
Cracking stuff! Sounds as crisp as a packet! Lovely work. Miss my old 350B but as I replaced it with an RG500 30 years ago, I can manage! Long live two strokes indeed!!!
Mine was a brand new RD350b as well, "blue", can always rember the headlight used to shake side to side when loading it up at powerband. The footpeg brackets were half worn threw by the time I sold it. Great memories except for the few broken bones.
I don't really like the style of seat you went for, but we obviously have different taste and for what you were going for, it's fucking beautiful, I would only get the seat down just a little bit to make it align with the tank, that's the one single detail, other than that, amazing bike man.
I saw a lot of great engineering and hand fabrication. You did an amazing job with the tools you have. I had an R5 350 back in the 70s. It was a blast back then and I'm sure this one is now. Seeing you do the rebuild and riding it at the end brought back a lot of good memories. Keep the shiny side up!
I rode an RD400 once. Once. I think I may remember laughing maniacally the whole time, while also soiling my drawers. The sound of this one running down the road brought back some fun and terrifying memories of being bulletproof. Thanks.
Great vid man!!! My dad has a mint 1972 rd 350 orange with black stripes. It is truly amazing to see a builder like you totally bring back a bike like this to life! Banshee power baby!
I did a full restore on a 1975 RD-350B about a 15 years ago. It took me a couple of years to finish it. The one missing piece was the seat. I had a contact at the local Yamaha dealership who bored my cylinders and he was able to order a stock seat from the factory. There were only 2 left and I got one of them. When it arrived, the box was covered in dust and even after opening the box, I couldn't believe the amount of dust inside too. That's what happens after 30 years in the factory, I guess? When it was finished, the bike was amazing. I got pulled over by a group of Hell's Angels riding through a canyon on the way to the beach. I thought these guys were going to kick my ass. The lead guy go toff of his hog an walked over to me and said "Wow!, check this out. My first bike was one of these." Showing his other buddies. Then he congratulated me on the restore and they took off. Whew!
Incredible, thank you. Brings back a bunch of good memories from my younger days, my buddy had a RD 350 and I had the 125cc. The DT 360 was my all time favourite.
Beautiful work Vasily! You're builds get better and better - absolutely love this RD350! I'm a big Yamaha fan (my daily is an FJR1300, all my audio equipment is studio Yamaha, raced a YZ80, YZ125, YZ426F) and have always loved that RD350!! Keep up the great work! Thank you so much for all the time you spend to share these videos, I know it takes a lot of work and we all appreciate it!!!
Nice job, man! 2 strokes never die! Just a tip for your alloy welding : don't cut the parts with the grinder, use a saw. Those discs pollute the weldingby leaving particles inside. Tig doesn't like it. You 'll improve drastically your welding. Try that and let me know. For me, that was from middle age to total recall ;). Thanks for your video!

They were quick alright. I remember riding a friends RD350 for the first time in the very early 1970's and scarring the life out of myself. The bike I rode at that time was a Yamaha RT1B trail bike, and the RD350 was a whole new ball game. I found myself carrying far too much speed into corners and then really struggling to get around them. I quickly learned to treat that bike much differently to my RT1B in corners or i wasn't going to live much longer
I love 2 strokes I really wish they still passed test.. You showed some skill restoring the bike, I liked them restored but with left with patina, not overly keen on the seat though...thanks for the video.
Back in the day I owned a Yamaha 350 R5F, it was a beautiful machine, quite quick and gave me no problems at all. I consider that a very good buy and was proud to own one. (Australia)
Also had a '73... I put a drag handlebars, hollowed out the mufflers and turned the shift lever around 180. so it was easier to shift with my heel while doing wheelies! Surprised I didn't kill myself on that beast!! I've owned many bikes, but the RD holds a special place in my heart. Nice resto-Mod
Vas, I'm a scrapper, and a while back I salvaged a Yamaha 2 stroke outboard boat motor. It was a V4! I can't quite remember, but I think it had 4 carbs. It was a huge engine by bike standards, had to be 2 liters. It was big. I'm guessing the thing made at least 150 hp. I kept thinking, "this would RIP in a quad, a buggy, or a custom bike". It was full of salt water, way beyond repair, so I scrapped it. But I would have loved to hear it run!

What's remarkable about this (besides everything) is the level of mods to the frame, shocks and a ton of other aspects .. such a young builder too, well done sir !!
Great build, the EPA killed 2 stroke street bikes… took another 20 years and they eventually killed the off road 2 stoker’s. These RDs were great fun back in the day. A true giant killer. Always pleased to see young folks with skills. Great build.
Well of course i am old school so rather it before getting modified....i had an R5 for my second bike and it was a weapon in those days once timing was set up using a dial gauge. Never seen an angle grinder used so freely on a restoration and an engine being dumped on the ground as the frame was tilted...i guess this is the younger generation modern way. Great to see they are still interested in bikes. Probably made more from youtube with this bike clip then we did in our entire life from restoring bikes :)
My Army buddy in 1974 had an RD 350. It was lightening fast. He traded it for a Suzuki 380 triple two stroke with a Vetter Windjammer fairing that was not fast but a better touring bike. I had a Honda 550 Four with a handlebar mounted Wixom fairing. We rode all over Washington State.
Very nice resto, it looks stunning, and yeah they're definitely not for beginners! A friend of mine bought the Yamaha RD350 YPVS back in 1984 - it was a maniac machine, that ended up killing him. I rode it a couple of times and I told him it would end up killing him, but unfortunately he didn't listen, and it did exactly that.
I have to give u props for fabricating everything that you do you doing exactly what I want to do just building random stuff and doing all the fabrication and everything myself!!

Really beautiful bike and build. You certainly know your stuff. As mentioned these bikes were a real giant slayer in the 1970s and it's a such a treat to hear that sound again. 2 stroke heaven revisited.😁👍
Had the YDS7 in 72. In the UK in those days , you could just walk into a shop and buy a 250 having never driven before ,and zoom off into oblivion without a helmet. From what I remember , a 250 cost around £250 and a 350 was close to £350. I managed to survive the experience by a 6 week stay in hospital.
My cousin Tom asked to have a ride on my then-new 1974 RD350. "It sounded like a couple of (BSA) Bantams (British 175cc 2-stroke single) on tickover" Ah, now I hadn't warned him about what happened at 5k rpm when that 350 hit its powerband..... He came back after about 10 minutes, shaken & stirred! It had taken off like a scalded cat. Huge fun in the traffic light Grand Prix though!

Sir,same to same looking Yamaha RD35O cc was made in India to.7000 units, now 4000 units went to melt down, the rest 3000 units are still around valued at 400,000/- Indian rupees, well your mods are great, seems wecan do it to the RD 350, All the best sir ,😄
Super Cool, Love man. I had 73 rd350 one back in the early 90"s when I was young. Absolutely a fun and Insane bike to ride, rode the hell out of it all over California. Great Video, Thanks for the memories, wish I still had her.
You have earned a sub I have no clue what I'm doing but I am soon to get a bike and start doing the same thing for the very first time I have had a few motorcycles over the years but this has made me want to do the same thing that you have done so hopefully it goes well
R5 bought new in UK for £350, in early 70s. Drum brakes, and 36 bhp. A deep fondness for TS twins, starting with Suzuki Super Six in 1968, £300 from Pride and Clark. Ending with late 70s Yamaha RD 250, the best of the lot. Ahh salad days.
Absolute gr8 restoration ,you cant beat the old RD s i used to production race them back in the 80 s brilliant bikes for the time, there was a lot of work on filming and editing take credit for that too, greetings from Wales UK.
Yeah it's a nice bike, BUT it would have been better if you had done more of the work yourself. I mean apart from stripping the frame, re-fabricating it, doing all the welding, building the forks, stripping the engine then rebuilding it, fabricating a monoshock swing arm, creating the seat base, changing the set up of the brakes onto the new wheels, fitting the tyres, setting up the callipers etc what exactly did you do yourself? Seriously tho, mate, MASSIVE RESPECT. What an effort. What a result. Sounds beautiful too. 👍👍👍
awesome, this was my very first motorbike, from 1981-1982 - just a diff. colour (red-white) but anything else, identical, sold it after 1 year because i could affort it (too high fuel consumption and insurance premium for a student) and bought aYamaha XS 650....
Some of us with the coffin tank RD250 wanted the barrels off those 350's - they were the same stroke and would drop right in. My 250 had 2mm off the top of the exhaust port, a bit of gas flowing on the transfer ports, a little work on the piston and went like stink for what it was, so when it got blown away by another "250" I was surprised...and then learned it had the 350 barrels. Of course, most of us had Ace bars and Allspeed expansion chambers. Heh.
Awesome! Almost finished my 1979 yb100 cafe racer build, just need a pipe and a better air filter, tune the carb to them and hopefully ill be able to hit 100kmh
Yamahas RD350 are legends and giant killers......Kenny Roberts raced one back in his early career and after kicking everythings elses ass the AMA outlawed it....the 70 midel with the purple stripe is still a piston port engine....

Don't you just love it when the world goes blurry
I had the Suzuki GT380 two stroke tripple. Same idea - mad power band. Great fun!
Sir,same to same looking Yamaha RD35O cc was made in India to.7000 units, now 4000 units went to melt down, the rest 3000 units are still around valued at 400,000/- Indian rupees, well your mods are great, seems wecan do it to the RD 350, All the best sir
,😄
R.I.P. Yamaha 350. less one in the world
Man that thing must be so fun to ride and it sounds nasty!!
great job looks fun
Following u from 3 years…Love from Pakistan❤️
👏🙏
@@VasilyBuilds why bro following means watching ur bulid😍
Another classic lost forever. I hoped the term "restoration" meant reviving it to it's original glory.
Dude's a genius 😎👍
Amazing platform(RD350) meets Amazing skill set/Vision! Had a couple RD350’s back in 90ish. Wicked little monsters!
Thx for posting... I've owned 2 of these over the years... :)
Super Cool, Love man. I had 73 rd350 one back in the early 90"s when I was young. Absolutely a fun and Insane bike to ride, rode the hell out of it all over California. Great Video, Thanks for the memories, wish I still had her.
Amazing.
2T never die
You have earned a sub I have no clue what I'm doing but I am soon to get a bike and start doing the same thing for the very first time I have had a few motorcycles over the years but this has made me want to do the same thing that you have done so hopefully it goes well
These motors were famous for Atc builds! That would be killer if you did another one in this time and day!🙂🙂
I actually have an atc frame haha
That would be a Awesome build knowing your skills!
That bike came out perfect! Love the pipes and the patina in the gas tank
Very rare touchup . Great job
Darn good work Vasily. It's a beast!
Super awesome. Any more and that bike will need a wheelie bar and wings lol. Thanks for showing man.
Thank you sir!
awesome, this was my very first motorbike, from 1981-1982 - just a diff. colour (red-white) but anything else, identical, sold it after 1 year because i could affort it (too high fuel consumption and insurance premium for a student) and bought aYamaha XS 650....
Heh.
I can’t wait to see the after break in video
The clips at the end of this are after break in! Full gas
You need to recalibrate the oil pump to run 50:1 synthetic. Then you can run the colder plugs without oiling them up round town.
Awesome! Almost finished my 1979 yb100 cafe racer build, just need a pipe and a better air filter, tune the carb to them and hopefully ill be able to hit 100kmh

Banging behaviour, your skillset is bad ass..
For certain you made it a better bike!! Nice!
Yamahas RD350 are legends and giant killers......Kenny Roberts raced one back in his early career and after kicking everythings elses ass the AMA outlawed it....the 70 midel with the purple stripe is still a piston port engine....
