I'm redesigning my characters as I continue to think of the concept for my story. Giving them distinct shapes, sizes to fit personalities and their position in the story.
An OC i've had since 2012 has gone through at LEAST 12 redesigns since it's original form. What started out as a green and brown (terrible color choice I know) MLP OC is now the silvery blue anime girl I use as my persona(?)/channel mascot xD a lot of the changes i've made to her design were minor, but it's kinda weird to see how far she's come from her original state.
@@jestersudz6085 I guess not all the redesigns were minor, lol. There was a period of about 3 years where I made a lot of minor tweaks to the character, but her design only changed majorly 2 or 3 times.

Great video. To answer your question in the video, I haven't really 'redesigned' my character. I've gone back and tweaked the design over time, improving the shape of things as I get better at vectoring.
In my case the re-design was pretty significant as my OC went from being a mutant pegasus with hands to a Kirin, however I've kept the same color palette and some other features. One of the driving point was a opinion that those colors works much better when used with Kirin, rather than what I had before. Another reason being also the fact that I simply love Kirins :P At the moment I'm pretty happy with that I have right now, and don't plan new re-designs however.
My scalesona, Talon has been through a lot of redesigns, but her most recent/current one is one I'm very happy with. However, someone pointed out that the markings on her wings (light blue, purple and white against brown wings) looked "too much". I was a bit taken back by it, so I asked my boyfriend on his opinion on it. He shrugged and said, "Looks fine to me." I personally do not think they are too much, but if and when she goes through another redesign, the least I can do is tone them down a bit, so it's honestly not a big deal now, compared to the first time I saw that comment. Great job on the video Spirit!
My main OC has been redesigned only a few times, and I guess I kept that first tip from the beginning. She gives off a rich/beautiful vibe, so her main colors are purple and white, with an accent color of yellow. Her accessories are just gold jewelry, and her personality is a bit boastful, but she's very generous at the same time. Basically the kind of person I am (minus the rich vibe?).
I’ve redesigned my characters more times then I can count. One of my characters went from an edgy peryton to a tall cervitaur to a short, chubby albino deer.
I made my first oc 3 years ago and the biggest struggle I had when I was redesigning my characters hair and details.I changed the desing at least 5 times and finally found a hair desing and details.I also gave my oc a personality last year. With my first desing she had way too many spikes, fur, she had crystals everywere and hair was really long and spiky.
My Oc went to redesigns based on a story and plot, first stage was a pegasus with two colored mane, then turned into an alicorn, then grew a longer horn with faded blue on her hooves, wings, and tips on her hair, (I wouldn't really count this one) and lastly permanent injury with horn broken and right wing broken as well.
I forgot how many changes I've made to Ft. Bon.Bon (my oc) but I do know that my oc used to be a ripoff of ft Freddy from fnaf to being a cutesy blue bunny with a hoodie or a sweater
Malachite has gone through a few changes from having upright horns to horns that curve back, she’s acquired some stocking markings to her legs. Her stripes have gotten thinner and closer together
One of my eldest characters(And the one that went through the most changes) is Spot the Dragon, where even though him at his most basic is a red and black European dragon, he has still gone through a lot of changes in design. I first drew him in march of 2018, back when i was a young artist that didn't knew how MS Paint worked(I don't use it as much anymore, but i still go back to truly see how far i have come), so that left three whole years of changes. From bipedal to quadruped, no hair to a main on his back, two horns to six horns then back to two, wings to no wings, his design was everywhere. But i have found a simple, yet readable design that i can stick with, which is important since i am making an animated series that stars him in the first season, so his design should stay consistent in my opinion.
AH I love these videos!! To answer your posed question, I have redesigned most, if not all, of my characters at least once. Most of the time it's because my style has improved and the character looked very plain and uninspired. Other times, I simplify the design to make it easier on me because I have to draw them hundreds of times over haha An example would be one of my main characters, Ryan, who is a piebald deer. In the beginning, I had him designed with very complex markings, including fawn spots of different amounts on either hind. This was just too complex. So I simplified his markings to being very simple, easy to draw, but still recognizable. Anyway, thanks for the video! I look forward to more Art Block episodes in the future!! :))
My sona has changed a lot since 2014(there has only been any 2 full blown redesigns, Everything else was minor edits while drawing them again and again.{also technically this face image is outdated but only really with color hues with the hair and Fur})
I've only changed one of my original characters slightly. Also, shouldn't the base of the antler on the left, have that much of its base stick out so much when your character is facing slightly diagonal?
I have a robot OC that has been through A TON of redesigns. From it looking super basic to looking like a transformer (from what I’ve been told), I can safely say I’ve improved my drawing skills BY A LOT. Just recently, I did a full-on revamp of him, and I am not disappointed in the result. I gave him a more human-like appearance, but still kept his design as close as I can to the previous version. I now have 2 official versions of him, one cartoony version and one extremely sci-fi-based version. Hard work really pays off! But that’s just one out of twelve OCs that I have lol, my main one, to be exact. It’s both my persona and UA-cam mascot (I included him in one of my videos, and I plan to include him in even more future videos).
I remember you use to have a horse as an avatar. Things have change over time. Even with character design can change how the world change the character. I know i have one that is always adapting and it took me years for me to settle of what i want to go on. But the core is still the same however just the different elements. And it is reflected on how the end product look. So yes i agree things do change over with time as we grow and able to put different elements to which havent thought of.
Actually having a horse avatar is really common. It is so easy to blend in with the crowd. Anime Christy is an example of a horse. It is a good thing that Spirit became a deer instead. Deer are more rare, so she she looks so unique. The only other deer I know of is Tyandaga. My avatar is Meethees. She is in the profile picture by this comment. Meethees started out as a horse too. Then I just made up my own kind of creature and used that.
I personally made multiple versions of my OC Streak, he started a lot more simple as a duck with a simple olive green shirt, glasses, and a vest similar to the one of Dipper Pines from Gravity Falls. Over time he gained a pair of shorts, a toothed necklace, and changed species from a duck to a swan.
I actually just spent 2 hours re writing the backstory and tweaking parts of the design of my oc of 3 years. Before she was an elf queen with the most extreme powers who had a typical bullied nerd kid backstory but now she's simply a well respected higher ranking elf who willingly fought people as a kid, buy still kinda smart and nerdy as such. She also originally had bright pink hair and neon purple eyes but ice changed it to be brown hair with a slight pink shade and a kinda pastel muted plum for the eyes. She's still recognisable as the character she was before, she's just less of a Mary-sue.
I have an OC named Skratch, he's a calico cat with a blue hoodie and a visor. I made him in like five minutes three years ago, and I'm finally considering how go "fix" him.
I made my oc fizzqueen when I was 7 and yeesh. She still has the same pink and green hair but It used to be like lime green and got pink it's like a magenta and mint now.
I have no way to draw them myself, though often their looks i keep put to paper..some characters of mine i have a means of showing them off through comissioned art but thats about it...there are many of mine who have gone through major changes, the biggest one i can give is an oc of mine named Nevi. Now...Things that have stuck with nevi through and through; red hair, his main color being purple, and a tail with a feathery fluff at the end.. but major changes that have happened? removing antlers he had as i felt they were no longer a fitting part to his character, his eyes going from red and gold to green and gold, as i felt the latter color was more soft as he is compared to the harshness of red. He's gained a few accessories; namely an amethyst necklace and a scarf of red and yellow. His hair going from pure red, to red with silver highlights. Even the way i pictured the feathery fluff of a tail he had changed, going from literal feathers to just fluffy fur. All and all, what he's changed to now is something i'm happy with, and while sure he may have changes in the future, his look now is what i love.
The character I drew for my current profile pic used to have metal scale mail armor, and smaller horns below the two huge ones. He also didn’t originally have the blue trim, and he had wings rather than a dorsal fin before I realized how much organic wings would actually suck to have. Now he’s vibing with a suit that matches his color palette, a dorsal fin, and a double barrel crossbow. You want me to redesign him even further!? Leave my dieselpunk boi alone!
My main "oc" (she actually ended up being my fursona) started out as just..a fox. Later she developed her first somewhat recognisable design choice, a collar with a green apple charm. Now she has a solid design, though some of its aspects make the face feel cluttered in some drawings, so she has a long way to go yet, just as I do as an artist!
So, as you se my profile picture, this was my old oc, but the thing is, that i completely changed it to a type of a male copy of "Her" from Comrades: Distant Memories [a fnf mod] now that im thinking about my oc's base, he is slim, tall, agile, and the thing is that... i can't stop changing, like im thinking always of my oc's originality, and im planing a new design, but, what if i want to change it again, and again, AND AGAIN? It is kinda of a problem here :[
I'm really bad at character design. My story is set during the Vietnam war, so there is no animals other than the cadaver dogs and k9s (so no distinct pattern or fur), limited amount of hairtyles and colors, only small amounts of different clothes, and since they are all soldiers, basically the same build. (Ugh) I do give them different personalities, pretty different uniforms, and different face shapes, but they all end up looking pretty similar at the end.. does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this problem?
Eyes and noses, small quirks with how they put their uniform on.(or added accessories) colors, ect (thats all i can think of for now)(also this is YOUR story and i can be as real and unreal as you want it. Ie changing the uniform, the rules... but thats just my perspective! 😅)
So, my oldest character, Zach (indicated by the pfp) was originally just a standard Minecraft Zombie in appearance. Though, somewhat recently, I've thought up a few tweaks: - Shoes are light blue instead of grey (Reference to this inaccuracy on the Baby Zombie's plush) - Unbuttoned Leather Tunic as a jacket/overcoat - Collar w/ Name Tag on his wrist (Both referencing a game mechanic and pointing to a backstory I've yet to iron out)
Genuin question: most of these character design videos talk about also talk about about outfits, like it's part of the design.. I mean do- do you guys draw your ocs in the same outfit everytime? Like do you guys' ocs always wear the same clothes??!!
Yeah it’s kind of a joke on how cartoon characters usually wear the same clothes all the time lol. Probably also has to do with how I hate drawing outfits, so I’ll pick one good one and stick to it.
I have a Hollow Knight OC called Shrub. He’s a bee that likes visiting greenpath and is friends with one of my main Hollow Knight ocs (seen in my profile picture). He used to look like this one image I found that someone did of different hollow knight bee designs for characters or something. Now he looks more like the actual bees in Hollow Knight, but he’s much better now
So I made an oc in early 2022 and she has a 2018 look to her for say she is a fox with wings and she is pink, cyan, and purple. Her design has changed a lot, from a human with animal ears and tail to just a normal furry with hair and clothes on. She is my oc everyone online remembers me by. I still love the girl but I have made a lot of other ocs and when I post probably won’t be my main oc. The reason is because she’s to complex, I’ve dumbed it down to just a furry before but she doesn’t look right.
Question( possible vid idea?): when does someone pass the line of having too many OCs? Right now, I have 11 with one needing a complete redesign because it just doesn’t fit with its environment and such
I draw so many characters and each one is different but they arent ''ocs'' like wtf should I only draw 2 to 5 characters? No I draw something new everytime and push myself Sure I have some specific character designs reused but thats it OC is a dumb term
11 is not that bad. You can keep going. George R. R. Martin is one person that stands out as having a ton of OCs. I personally find it too difficult to keep track of them. So I only keep track of the important ones. I guess having lots of OCs is okay if Martin likes to do this.
I was starting with an male character that is kinda mixed with demon, emo kid and ninja. but later on i made it to be like that but also music that i aimed mostly. later on i changed it looks more. i was happy with that change but then later on i feelt like i didnt like it that much and then when i tried as a female it was good till i then changed it even more from male to female. i changed instead of being those 3 catagory i changed my character to a DJ Neko Girl and it looked so good. kinda took little from a character that does exist but changed some small stuff but then i got still assumed as the original one and now im stuck for not knowing how i want my new look och my real OC to be.
That is an interesting video. I like to change character designs every now and then. The OC that has had the most changes is Soram. He is basically a good-looking man. He is the most difficult thing for me to draw. Soram is a male character, but he isn't very manly. In his design, I go for an adrogynous look rather than a really masculine look. It is tricky to pull off. Soram has gone through a whole lot of character changes. This reflects me practicing and improving on drawing him. At one point, I changed his hair style to something more original and something more reflective of his personality. Soram does retain the same color scheme and long hair length. So I can still tell he is the same guy. I did have an idea to tweak Soram again. I can tone down the saturation of his green eyes. I only recently learned why having full saturation is not always a good thing. For me it is about having things more realistic. There are other OCs. that went through changes. My avatar, Meethees, had some recent changes. The saturation of her green fur got toned down. Her eye shape also changed to have corners. Luspear is another OC. I have her as my protagonist. Luspear is in a duo with Soram. Of the two, she is more straightforward and easier to draw. She has short hair but otherwise she looks very feminine. Luspear has had character changes, but not as much as Soram. The biggest change is the hair style. It reflects the personality of Luspear, and it makes her look cuter.
This is reminding me of how my OC Derrek (yes, his name purposely is spelled wrong, it just kinda stuck) changed like five times lmao. First he was this chubby ginger haired nerd with a puppy named brownie, then he turned into a rebellious teen who instead of always wearing green wore a lot of blue and black and red, then I made him a kinder adult with a dog named coco, and then he was a villain who only wore black and worked with zombies (keep in mind from after the nerd phase to now he has black hair that’s half blonde and is now Korean as of this point), and now he’s a mid-30s teacher who always wears sweater vests and has gravity manipulation powers and teaches a high school science class. Then there’s my OC Piper who slowly but surely went from an androgynous emotionless robot to a moody masculine looking guy who’s labeled as an off-brand squip haha
Ok let's see. Hemlock has defintatly gone through the most changes. First, he was a venomous dragon, hence the name. Green, brown and white colors, and a cold personality. I didn't us him much for a long time before i tried a redesign. Then he was a kind of shapeshifter i guess? He could only turn into a wolf though. Same colorscheme but no white. This form's personality did a full 180, being happy go lucky. Currently, the design I plan on keeping goes back to the dragon, kinda. Hemlock now is the god of poisons and stuff like that. His colorscheme is just white and green now, no more brown. A dragon like before but instead of the usual four legged winged, i went with something more like a lung dragon. Bunch of feathers around head and tail. His personality's kinda similar to what it was with his firat design but he's a lot less colder and more friendly. So now here I am, with my cool as heck poison god with a really strict sense of justice
Question tho what if u don't want to change ur oc even if people are saying to change parts of ur oc. I never been been in that situation before but I just want to know what to do so I don't get stressed or just go in to sado mode.
honestly oc design isnt that deep, sure for a serious story you may want well crafted designs but you dont have to have them, if it's something you're making not professionally then make it fun, and do what you enjoy
I've had these phew OCs since 2015 and to this day I haven even made up my mind on what their world is like therefore I cant decide what the characters' stories are and what the characters would wear -.-
I haven't redesigned my OC since I made him in 2017 (I've changed his outfit, but not the actual character) and I feel like he needs an update because I don't really feel like he represents me anymore. I'll edit this comment once I update his design.
I had a punching bag OC who didn't have arms and was just constantly scared. After a few months of having her I changed her slowly and gave her back her arms. Now around half a year after I made her she's now just a timid zombie who wants to be a singer because I realised I didn't like her concept at all
My main characters evolution She started of as a cringy batim (bendy) fan character from a time where I had an obsession with the character Sammy Lawrence TvT She had black hair and a short dress that showed waaay to much skin. And she also looked like a bendy knockoff. I ended up changing her to cover up more stuff when I fell out of the obsession with the game. And she then got turned into a human. And then had white hair and bright purple eyes. I ended up adding a twin into the mix, with black hair and red eyes. He got scrapped again. Then I changed my main oc to be less cringe. She didn't wear dresses anymore. She has a pretty hat now :> her eyes are less bright and are more desaturated lavender. I Re added the twin who was also less cringe and more of a soft Boi than hardcore devil. And then the main character got preggo somehow and had also twins cuz I just felt like it. The other character got scrapped again and the main character and the kids were in focus. I gave all of them a final redesign. The main character is now a verry overprotective mom that senses when the kids are in danger from half the galazy away. . Kid 1 is Lil angy bean and kid 2 is kinda a punching bag for kid 1.
Redesigning? Oh boy. Whitewaters has had several changes, going from bat-like fluffy pegasus, to someone with membranes between feathers, to full on batwings. His markings changed on each one as well, as well as teeth designs and accessories. I'm currently doing my fourth big update, but no spoilers on what's about to change.
Some I haven’t completely redesigned But I’ve tweaked a bit for some and redesigned others But the ones I just tweaked I didn’t redesigned because i love the outfit.
Oh I’ve had my oc for about...coming up to a year now she’s been through a few designs but I’ll do a info thingy on them! :D Name:Bella Nationality:American (boring ik) Sexuality:Abrosexual Species:Cat x dark savior (my own species) Fandom?: Jojos bizarre adventure :) (no she’s not dating a canon character) Her stand can create nuclear bombs and mess with reality and it a massive floofy Cerberus :3 she’s in a lot of my videos so yeah you can tell me if she’s a sue or not! (I kinda think she is) also she has a service dog named Killer Queen :)
Oh and what I mean by “messing with reality” I’ll give a example,so let’s say your on a beach ok? She can mess with reality and change it to a field let’s say (she doesn’t use this very often tho)
I'm redesigning my characters as I continue to think of the concept for my story. Giving them distinct shapes, sizes to fit personalities and their position in the story.

My Main OC Fantasy Has Way Too many Redesigns
Edit: I Have Too many Backstories For her
So, as you se my profile picture, this was my old oc, but the thing is, that i completely changed it to a type of a male copy of "Her" from Comrades: Distant Memories [a fnf mod] now that im thinking about my oc's base, he is slim, tall, agile, and the thing is that... i can't stop changing, like im thinking always of my oc's originality, and im planing a new design, but, what if i want to change it again, and again, AND AGAIN? It is kinda of a problem here :[
I'm really bad at character design. My story is set during the Vietnam war, so there is no animals other than the cadaver dogs and k9s (so no distinct pattern or fur), limited amount of hairtyles and colors, only small amounts of different clothes, and since they are all soldiers, basically the same build. (Ugh)
I do give them different personalities, pretty different uniforms, and different face shapes, but they all end up looking pretty similar at the end.. does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this problem?
Eyes and noses, small quirks with how they put their uniform on.(or added accessories) colors, ect (thats all i can think of for now)(also this is YOUR story and i can be as real and unreal as you want it. Ie changing the uniform, the rules... but thats just my perspective! 😅)
GrassyMania B also teeth and mouths you can change small things about the teeth. Also scars don't forget scars.
Spirit looks amazing :)
So, my oldest character, Zach (indicated by the pfp) was originally just a standard Minecraft Zombie in appearance. Though, somewhat recently, I've thought up a few tweaks:
- Shoes are light blue instead of grey
(Reference to this inaccuracy on the Baby Zombie's plush)
- Unbuttoned Leather Tunic as a jacket/overcoat
- Collar w/ Name Tag on his wrist
(Both referencing a game mechanic and pointing to a backstory I've yet to iron out)
Genuin question: most of these character design videos talk about also talk about about outfits, like it's part of the design.. I mean do- do you guys draw your ocs in the same outfit everytime? Like do you guys' ocs always wear the same clothes??!!
Most of my Ocs do lol. There’s even one character who wears different clothes a lot and it’s considered strange lol
@@Neon99 CONSIDERED STRANGE? what... now that's strange to me.... I always draw them (my ocs) in different clothes.
The reason is because she’s to complex, I’ve dumbed it down to just a furry before but she doesn’t look right.
i like mine,
i love late 1800’s and early 1900’s
and love rabbits
bada bing bada boom

Question( possible vid idea?): when does someone pass the line of having too many OCs? Right now, I have 11 with one needing a complete redesign because it just doesn’t fit with its environment and such
I draw so many characters and each one is different but they arent ''ocs'' like wtf should I only draw 2 to 5 characters? No I draw something new everytime and push myself
Sure I have some specific character designs reused but thats it
OC is a dumb term
11 is not that bad. You can keep going. George R. R. Martin is one person that stands out as having a ton of OCs. I personally find it too difficult to keep track of them. So I only keep track of the important ones. I guess having lots of OCs is okay if Martin likes to do this.
Once it reaches +607,835, that’s when it’s too many. I’m at 607,834.
i redesign all of them and they looking fresh
I’ve been looking for some help I can’t redesign my oc well so maybe someone else can help?
I plan to redesign one of my oldest OCs today! =]
I cant even draw, why do i keep reminding myself that
This is reminding me of how my OC Derrek (yes, his name purposely is spelled wrong, it just kinda stuck) changed like five times lmao.
I had a stuffed animal named brownie he got cannibalized by my dog :(
Thanks for this video existing. I was just messed up.
My main fursona went from a white house cat to a natural schemed puma 😂

Well I think my character is fine why thank you!
I'm joking 🦈
I had a punching bag OC who didn't have arms and was just constantly scared. After a few months of having her I changed her slowly and gave her back her arms. Now around half a year after I made her she's now just a timid zombie who wants to be a singer because I realised I didn't like her concept at all
My main characters evolution
She started of as a cringy batim (bendy) fan character from a time where I had an obsession with the character Sammy Lawrence TvT
She had black hair and a short dress that showed waaay to much skin.
Yeah I probably do need to change mine, Its all bugs
I can't believe that Dumbsville called this UA-camr "Critically acclaimed"
man my main oc has had slight changes, but I did it in a sly way as I just changed his design as he aged.
*i’ve redesigned my oc at least 76 times and it’s only June.*
I have a question about your character on screen.
If your oc is a female, and a deer then why does she have antlers? Only males do.
Some I haven’t completely redesigned But I’ve tweaked a bit for some and redesigned others
But the ones I just tweaked I didn’t redesigned because i love the outfit.
Me how can’t even draw my fursona because dyspraxia : how i can do that :/
oh i know youre not saying this with a generic blue deer design

the answer: when you want
Having trouble with my art style so, heah
Me who just watched ‘ your oc doesn’t belong to you’ TwT yeah imma stick with the normal one…
I do that all the time
i love how your oc was a mlp style character all those eyars and suddenly BOOM furry
*I though she had a Hitlerstache in the thumbnail*
"your oc sucks"
me: i know xD
Woeoe
nice
Hi. How are you? ;-;
Why do you sound like cat? Ō_Ō

Got a new subscriber in me :) .
MY OC SUCKS?!?! WELL YOU'VE GOT A HITLER MUSTACHE!
LOL i know what you mean, but thats the way deer noses look like
Oh I’ve had my oc for about...coming up to a year now she’s been through a few designs but I’ll do a info thingy on them! :D
Name:Bella
Nationality:American (boring ik)
Sexuality:Abrosexual
Species:Cat x dark savior (my own species)
Fandom?: Jojos bizarre adventure :) (no she’s not dating a canon character)
Her stand can create nuclear bombs and mess with reality and it a massive floofy Cerberus :3 she’s in a lot of my videos so yeah you can tell me if she’s a sue or not! (I kinda think she is) also she has a service dog named Killer Queen :)
Oh and what I mean by “messing with reality” I’ll give a example,so let’s say your on a beach ok? She can mess with reality and change it to a field let’s say (she doesn’t use this very often tho)
My oc is a fuking penguin in a mech
* me realizing that i took 1 year to make the good mha oc *
* and me realizing that i took 2 months to make the good creepypasta oc *
My oc is a robot

My oc is gud boi
They all were distinct since the beginning. This video is pure nonsense
