Cinematic Studio Woodwinds in an Ensemble Piece

- A lyrical composition featuring Cinematic Studio Woodwinds and Cinematic Studio Strings (con sordino). Let me know in the comments what you think. Thank you!
In the first two tutti parts you will hear the flutes a2, oboes a2, clarinets a2, and bassoons a2 instead of the respective solo instruments. In the final chord you will hear all the a2 instruments and all the solo instruments playing together. I've chosen the microphone settings (see below) because I feel that they provide just the right room sound and realism for this composition.
The picture was taken in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany, Italy.
Mics
CSW: Overhead and Main, with a tad less of the OH
CSS: Close, Main and Room, mostly Main
Reverb
Seventh Heaven (Scoring Stage)
Equalizer and Limiter
Gullfoss (Recover 15%, Tame 25%)
Ozone 8

What?! Woodwinds is the only piece of the CSS range I don't own yet. Buying now! Great piece!
Thank you very much, Willem! I put a lot of love into this piece.
This is a beautiful composition Frank. You have very good skills writing for woodwind instruments (the breaths, melody, phrase, how you articulate)
The placement of the woodwinds and the space is very natural. It would be great if you make someday a walkthrough (how you eq etc).
Thank you, Gerti!
Beautiful piece, and beautifully produced - an excellent example of the library that I am definitely planning on buying ASAP. Thank you for sharing! :)
Thank you very much! I share your excitement for the library.
this composition reminds me of Chrono Trigger, I don't know why, very beautiful!
Thank you, The Riser!
Now, THAT'S how you do it. First class job Frank, both the composition and the programming. You should send this to Alex Wallbank! (He's the very talented guy who makes the Cinematic Studio series).
Thank you so much for your feedback. That is a good idea. I‘ll do that! :D
@@francolupo23 Alex is a very receptive guy - I know he'll appreciate it.
@@Nick.Magnus I have already sent him the link to the video :)
This sounds GREAT but my opinion is that it's a bit too lightweight in the center. Still, I'd love to see more of a breakdown of the track!
Thank you for listening! Sadly, I’m not planning to go back to that composition. I might be posting new ones though.
Wow, this makes me want to buy the Library asap, hopefully soon. Lovely piece, really does justice to CSW, well done!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Great composition! And I think CSW sounds beautiful. I guess I'm gonna buy the whole studio series soon!
Thank you very much!
You won‘t regret buying the entire series. It‘s state-of-the-art.
Truly emotional piece. Full of desire and uplifting vibes. With the strings on sordino setting, the woods have so much space to shine✨. Subscribed 😊
Thank you, Theo! These fantastic instruments really have no need to hide behind other instruments. I am amazed at how lively and authentic they sound for their specific lines. My compliments go to Alex Wallbank, the developer of the library. On a sidenote: I didn‘t use the readymade mic mix. The warm presence and simultaneous capability to blend perfectly with the strings is due to the chosen combination of OH and Main mics.
This piece is a beauty !
Well done Frank :)
Thank you so much!
What are your reverb settings here? Also, for the woodwinds, how do you set your mic positions? This all sounds great!
Thank you, Steven! What I remember right off the bat is that the microphone choice was more important for the sound than the exact reverb settings. I used the Scoring Stage reverb from Seventh Heaven.
Very regal! The Cinematic Studio Series patches may actually be the best on the market currently.
¡Excellent!
Sounds very nice . I love CS great Job.
Thank you, Romodorok! My pleasure!
Flawless 🧘♂️
Thank you, Limbiclesion!
Such an inspiration, I'm coming back everytime i can ;p
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed composing the piece. :)
Thanks, what a lovely demo.
I thank you.
Beautiful!!!
Thank you very much! :)
Very sweet
Thank you for listening, Tristan! :)
Very clean work. Bravo!
Thank you very much, Khiro!
Wonderful piece! It sounds really good!
Thank you! It is an inspiring experience to work with those exquisite virtual instruments.
Not only the sound of the library but also the music is so beautiful! Congratulations! :) And also the picture in the background. Is it from somewhere in Italy?
Thank you, Serkan! I appreciate it. The picture was taken in Tuscany, Italy.
Wonderful !!!
Thank you, Zardoz!
Lovely!
Thank you, Mark!
I have the library and i can say that actualy is the best woodwinds library.
Thank you for your comment. At the moment I‘m redoing the piece with different virtual instruments for comparison. My initial attempt to use BWW Revive was so unsatisfying that I am now turning to the Exp B instruments.
@@francolupo23 Is the sound of the berlin soloists acceptable? I wanted to buy it, but I‘m not sure if it is a better choice than CSW. Kind regards! Moritz
@@motu9741 Hi Moritz, thanks for the question. Berlin Woodwinds Soloists are definitely among the best libraries out there. I’m a bit reluctant to say which ones I think are the best. It might be a good idea for me to do this piece again, but this time using Berlin Soloists. That way you could compare them directly.
I would be very interested to hear the comparison!
Lovely Composition, did you use any plugins on the mix bus?
Thank you, Louie! I make an effort to limit the use of additional plugins in order to preserve the library's natural sound. Moreover, I am truly impressed by the meticulous execution of the microphone positions in this library. They offer a remarkable degree of flexibility and deliver an outstanding sound experience.
@@francolupo23 You're welcome! That makes a lot of sense to do, I agree with that approach fully. I only own the cinematic studio brass, but they are incredibly and offer much mixing flexibility/ control
just wow
Cheers, Jan! :)
Awesome Work 👍
Thank you very much!
Beautiful! And also very good programming and mixing :)
Thank you, Emre! :)
@@francolupo23 You're welcome :) Also I want to ask something, how did you use the reverb? Instrument by Instrument or together?
@@arsinbadik I created sends from the tracks that go to an aux track and brought up the send levels, adding as much reverb as I liked to each track. Generally, the levels for the woodwinds are the same. For the strings too, but lower because of the natural releases of the CSS instruments
@@francolupo23 Thank you so much! So you're not using their own reverbs right?
@@arsinbadik That‘s right. I used LiquidSonics’ Seventh Heaven reverb (cf. the video description).
great!
Thank you, Simon!
Fantastic job sir. I have just run into your page. Do you have a similar work with Berlin woodwinds? It is said to be the best ;)
Thank you, bulentkamali! In fact, I started working on the exact piece using BWW, but only to find out that it would not have been able to keep up with CSW. So I decided against the direct comparison video. An entirely new piece might be an option.
@@francolupo23 hey, why do you think they can't compare, is there something missing?
@@artemi-music I tried to create organic lines with the library, but, for this piece, it just didn’t work. Am a great fan of Orchestral Tools’ though. :)
excelent ¡
Thank you very much, Ruben!
The only thing I would complain about is that I can’t hear the bassoon at all. Other than that, very beautiful arrangement regardless.
Arianna, thank you for your comment. I appreciate your feedback. In the part starting at 0:56 the bassoon blends beautifully with the English Horn. When you take the bassoon away there, the sound of the melodic line changes entirely. The bassoon is best heard at 1:59 for about seven seconds. Later it also blends with other instruments. But I do see your point. Compositionally, I could have reserved more time for the bassoon to shine on its own.
Frank Wolff I was not trying to be rude or anything. I just love it when I hear the bassoon play, it’s just so beautiful and melts my heart. I’m a bassoon fan, can you tell?
@@ariannagorbet6674 Actually, I agree wholeheartedly.
Frank Wolff Glad, the bassoon is a beautiful instrument and when it stands on its own, the result is heartwarming.
