- "CELEBRATING ALLEN
When we were in the planning stages for last year's 40th Anniversary celebration show one of the "surprises" was going to be Allen joining the band on stage with guest vocalist Patti Smith performing one of the many BӦC songs for which Patti had written the lyric.
Sadly, the show was postponed by Hurricane Sandy, and Patti was out of the country on the rescheduled date.
I captured a rehearsal take on my cell phone, and Patti has been gracious enough to let us share it with everyone.
So here's Eric, Buck, Richie, Jules, and Kasim joined by Allen and Patti for "Career of Evil".
SLS"
For those who thought Patti was "embarrassed" about here collaborative history with BOC..take this! They clearly all still get along & she obviously understands & appreciates they gave her "start" in songwriting & music! Jesus! She was almost IN the band! & still a lot of love for her ex boyfriend...Allen! Well miss you always brother! (Say Hi to Jim & Helen) DFTR!
Did anyone think that?
Who ever thought that?
Why would BÖC ever be an embarrassment to her?
It's usually BOC fans who dismiss Patti's contributions. (I'm talking to you, former boyfriend and his college roommate . . .)
@@egirl622 who is 'you?' I'm confused.
This riff is GENIUS whether it be 1974 or 2022!!!! So unique.
What a cool rock and roll couple. Patti Smith And Allen Lanier.
I wish those two could have made a baby
She adds a lotta cred to BOC
I think Allen and Patti will eventually be the embodiment of the lyrics of Don't Fear The Reaper. God bless Allen, he was a brilliant musician and among my most cherished music heroes.
Ummm... Patti & Fred Smith ring a bell? That's rock n roll, baby.
Another BOC song that has stood the test of time. Such great stuff.
Had the chance to work several shows with BOC back in the early days and I must say, behind the tough on stage persona were a group of the nicest guys I have met in the business - and that even included their roadies Butch Crow and Steve Monroe...
Thanks for the music and the memories guys!
great version with patti
Love her icy vocals. My favorite rock n roll girl.
My alltime BÖC favorite. Love this song.
my favorite BOC song evah also! still sounds evil - quite an accomplishment!
Awesome song made even better by the goddess of punk, Patti Smith. All hail. (So glad I saw this band at their best.)
bark - just seen them a few nights ago in England, everyone leaving the hall said they are still around their best, played for 2 hours playing with the set list as they went along, marvellous night of stunning musicianship & a back catalogue of songs for other bands to weep over. I saw them in 1981 first & this was better ...
Steven Wilkinson a Band like no Öther. Cheers!
Debbie Harry was the goddess of punk! Accept no substitute! And how about that Mia Zapata.
@@stevenwilkinson1265 i saw them in 70's with the killer laser shows also in the 80's and 90's, but not quite as good.
The Agents of Fortune cover has Patti Smith on it as the dealer chick. Take a real good look.
I didn't think I could love this song any more. Wow.
🎉❤ Love 😍 this 📻🎧🎶🎸🎙️🎚️ Thank You ❤️
my favourite band and my favourite song - patti smith on vera gemini - shes awesome
Seems patti contributed to this song so most of the lyrics are hers
Secret Treaties man..hey no body was writing music BACK THEN like this.still not IN THIS AGE which is unbelievable actually..
I didnt even know who patti was before I started to listen to blue oyster cult. this is awesome clip. thank you. see you in next life eeryone
R.I.P. Allen.
Allen man I already miss you so much !
Rest In Peace !!
God bless you and the Cult for ETERNITY
what a fantastic rendition !!!! Love this and BOC.
what a privileged to see this.
That was great! Allan and Patti had a thing for a while, and she did backup vocals on a few BOC songs.
Great song!
Can I like this twice ?? ...what a groove ...
Thanks for sharing, very cool!
Thanxxx ... important video for BOC fan !!!
Patti Smith fans as well!
One of my top 10 of all the time... IN LIVE... SO EPIC.
RIP Allen !
Like the man said excellent
So great, thanks for sharing!
Patti heavily, unquestionably contributed to Blue Oyster Cult. She appears on the inside of BOC’s 1976 album Agents Of Fortune. She wrote and/or co-wrote many lyrics to tracks over the span of several years, but the masterpiece of all was “Shooting Shark”.
Shooting Shark lmao
@@edcollins9377 Laughed your ass off? Bro, you’re probably a limp-wrist punk who listens to that stinking rap/hip hop shit. What in the fuck do you know about rock music.
The world is so filled with the worthless weirdos, you’re one of them. Punk.
Very cool, I love my old BLC albums and I really took a special interest in Allen's playing and contribution, very cool guy.
“Blue Lobster Cult” ?
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Allen has just passed when BOC did a free show just after the Boston Marathon bombings at the Hatshell in Boston Commons. Will never forget this....
I love this!!!
FABULOUS PATTI!!!! LOVE BOC forever! :-)
+michaelmachine Patti was actually supposed to appear with BOC in NYC for the 40th anniversary, but due to Hurricane Sandy it was postponed. I still made it for the new date and original members from Cult performed. Awesome show in Times Square, I believe this was a session for that gig.
too damn cool...thanx for posting this!!
Nice style! Love it! My favorite BOC album!
Sounds as good as original imo! Wow, 40 years anniversary!
I always thought Patti and Allen were the cutest couple! Combining their individual talents was magical too :)
Fantastic!
Obscure Video, B.O.C. still sounds Fantastic in 2019, Patti is very cool .
BÖC is one of my favourite bands and certainly the most influencial on my work as a composer / musician. I would love your input on the first video of my first album. It got the attention of one of my heroes Joe Bouchard (ex bass player founding members of BÖC) who is following us on Soundcloud but returns from people who likes same music is always the best. If you have just 3 minutes to listen and a bit more to comment, that would mean the world to me. Keep rockin' : ua-cam.com/video/Pu_p1wbaCa8/v-deo.html
i love this music so much ! ....i mean i love all music but this is awesome and never gets boring for me
i hate hurricanes i lived in chalmette la before hurricane katrina. glad this was captured. my girlfriend flew up for the show and was backstage and stuck in new york for a week.
So awesome.
Fantastic Song, fantastic Lyrics !
What a treat!
Yes, more horses, horses. No more swimming like a fish. Times almost up. I see you ✌ tricky tricky.
❤️
Wow I wish I was there
I grew up listening to these songs. I've never heard this version of Career of Evil. It's king of a combination of funk and punk. Must be the Patti influence since she helped to create it.
pfunctory?
yes
@@edcollins9377
I want to give another thumbs up! Very nicely done even with the rude intrusions.
This is the coolest thing ever.
Awesome. Thank you!
Sweet! I don't think I've ever seen them do that one live. And I've seen them a bunch. Cool rehearsal room too. Looks familiar, but can't place it. Anyway... Long live BOC!
RIFFHANGER if im not mistaken, they never played cagey cretins either
Allen Lanier miss you
Just Awesome !!!!
Incredible. Thank you.
So Powerful, so Cryptic.
AWESOME
R.I.P Allen
such a great song! wake up america it's not just "don't fear the reaper !
Outstanding
incredible document
Great song reminds me lots of things back in the 70s
BOC - Baby tonight baby tonight Patti & Allen! ALLEN LANIER R.I.P. {A Career Of Unbelievably Cool Rock Joy}
Would have been nice if Patti and Albert had hooked up to do some Vera Gemini.
GOLD! Absolute GOLD!
god bless you all
I don’t know who you are, but BOY were you lucky to be in that room! God bless!

nice mishap rehearsal... love it
all those great lyrics
RIP Allen!
That ending is fucking lush 😍
Awesome! What I thrive for! Sharing if you don't mind
Nice!
I would love to have a beer with them. 😃
Too Great !
Understated classic
I love the fact that there's no love lost between Patti & BOC they all came up together in the early days & contributed to each other's "career of evil"
I also find it ironically funny that Eric says "excellent" for Patti's vocal when he was the "nay vote" when she was offered to join BOC back in the day!
I can't help but think Patti could or should have said to Eric,
"And YOU didn't want me in the band! Lol!
And, uh, why do you have to elaborate on more than one post about her looks? Is it something you can control? Are you going to date Patti? Would she be interested? You know she was actually much desired by men in the seventies and didn't just date Allen Lanier? Like, get over it. Your unsolicited feedback on a stranger won't affect her life, her past or the hygiene in question. She's a Commander of the Order of the Arts and Letters, what are you, dude?
+levoldunom Looks like I struck a nerve or perhaps you enjoy being around nasty girls that burp, fart, and smell. As for those men you spoke of, I grew up in the 70's and I know of no one who thought she was even remotely desirable. However, you may have hung around with some freaks back then who thought "hideous and nasty" was a turn-on. As you pointed out, Patti is loaded with God-given talent, but anybody who cares so little about basic hygiene is disgusting. I think she is a great singer and a talented songwriter, but I just don't understand how anybody can get up and sing in front of tens of thousands of people and have so little respect for herself and her fans!
Ed Collins To think any person, male or female, needs to show anybody evidence that they wash to strangers on the Internet is pretty absurd and some folks are preoccupied with other matters, such as making art and being talented, not petty. No, I was not around in the seventies. Yes, she was a freak in the sixties and seventies for not conforming to the cookie cutter gender role of her society. You may not find her hot but guys like Sandy Pearlman, Allen Lanier, Sam Shepard, Tom Verlaine, Fred Sonic Smith etc did. She found her people and made art, she wasn't trolling people for her appearance. She was a freak for coming of age in the sixties and seventies without wearing makeup which, in my opinion, made her look pretty clean in pictures. I don't understand your decades-long obsession with the hygiene of a woman who is surely a stranger to you.
It's odd that you claim "there's no love lost between Patti & BOC." They seem to be getting along fine here. Why would they even bother to collaborate in this way if they disliked each other?
@@edcollins9377thats one of the stupid types of comments I use to hear in the 70's. Often right in front of Patti, loudly. Some guys are rude n dumb. Always compared to Blondie. Nothing changes.
Ever toured in a bus? Patti's been in every major fashion mag like Vogue, n W.
Love this song n Revenge of Vera Gemini.
Thanks for posting Eddie!!
This is the first song I tried to do when I purchased my first digital multitrack recorder in 2001. I was in a band in the early 80's and we played several BOC tracks like this, Harvester Of Eyes and Take Me Away. Always wanted to do Divine Wind though...nothing ever came close to that track
C'est bon👍👍👍
Tight! Even with Patti not quite getting the timing right going into the chorus, it sounded awesome! R.I.P. Allen.
Usually Eric does the lead, but I thought Patti did fine.
justin kipper Yep. It sounded great! It must have been just one of those little brain fart moments that we all get occasionally. But hey, that’s why they call it rehearsal. To work out the little kinks. Love me some BOC!!
Who's not to say this was the way she wrote it? I was taken aback a bit when I heard the first chorus, but when she kept doing it the same way again and again, I started thinking this may be how she envisioned it. I'm a huge BOC fan, early seventies. And have had the privilege and honor of working some of their shows. Just a personal observation.
@@Justin_Kipper Eric and Buck are superior and so is there latest keyboardist/guitarist Richie Castellano or something like that. Great talent he is.
@@TheAxe4Ever Oh I get it. I see what you mean. Patti was the burping and farting girl /// haha
Such a talented band and of course Buck Dharma is one of rock's most under rated guitarists (along with Martin Barré of Jethro Tull). BOC's signature song is DFTR (enough with the extremely fucking lame cowbell jokes) but Career Of Evil from the Secret Treaties album remains my favourite. Honourable mention to ME262 & Hot Rails To Hell.

Together we'll make a career of Evil !
Wow. Just wow.
I didn't even know Allen had passed away. I learned today, reading on the internet.
sad it never made it to a live show
Career of evil sounds great played at gig level volume!!
wow.
wow
Buck HAS to own more than one guitar. 🙂
With both Kasim Sulton and Richie Castellano!
Reading Robert Galbrait's Career Of Evil novel right now. ;)
👍
Patti didn't get the "I choose to steal what you choose to show" right, but it's very cool anyway, great song ! thanks
Patti wrote the lyrics.
Ah!Patti
yes. and what di you do at your bbq, after the burgers.
"but still I'd keep your sheep"
Who is playing the keyboards and 2nd guitar ?
Wow , what other lyrics were written by Patti Smith?
The Revenge of Vera Gemini, Baby Ice Dog, and Shooting Shark are the ones I know of
oh allen, what was the word...longing.
Wow ! Just think if Patti was a more active role in the band from the beginning ?!?!!!
+Scott Mills She actually was. She wrote a number of songs for them. As did Jim Carroll and Mike Moorcock.
Scott, Popov's book suggests that Patti Smith was being considered as their full time vocalist at one stage, presumably when Les Braunstein left and just before Eric came in. Apparently Sandy Pearlman was a fan of hers.
@@stevenwilkinson1265 They were very close. In Patti Smith's latest book "The Year of the Monkey", she talks about planning to visit Sandy P. during her tour of N CA. Unfortunately he ended up in the hospital, where she visited him to say good bye. Sad.
Check out the book.
More cowbell!
hairs standing up on my neck..............
sUBERB!!
I always wanted to hear Patti do "Career of Evil". This rehearsal for a cancelled gig, captured on camera phone, may be as close as I'll ever get. It's not as special as I would have liked.
