  • Setting up decoys is an art. If you don't do it right you can watch as the toms turn away from your setup and leave you wanting to just run them down. In this video we go over 3 tips to help you pull in more toms to have a more successful turkey season.

Turkeys move in a flock in the same direction always in a certain pecking order. I’ve spent countless hrs just watching turkeys on our farm. Set the decoys up that looks like a natural flock. Btw gobblers usually are always towards the back so set ur strutter up accordingly. Early season my favorite setup is lookout hen out front (she’s the dominant girl) followed by a breeder (really just a casual following pose) 2 feeder hens with a lay down hen at the back with a 1/2 strut Jake or full strut tom 1-2’ behind her. Perfectly mimics how a real flock moves. String them a little facing parallel to ur position. The gobblers will always key in on the jake or tom decoy in ur flock and work towards the rear of ur decoy flock so make sure when they key in on that male decoy they ain’t staring right at u. To many guys just put a ball of turkeys out there when they run a flock and doesn’t look natural at all

Never did much decoy hunting and have killed many birds, but this year change it up with .410’s and decoys

If you are a right handed shooter set your decoys up on your left side if possible. This makes for a better gun swing and easier shot opportunity.

Use a hair dryer if your decoy has a indent in it it should pop out and hold its shape if not it’s a dud

I’ve heard numerous turkey hunter “experts” state “don’t set
the decoy directedly in front of you”. A straight line between 2 points IS in
front of you (i.e. shooter to turkey). Possibly you (& others) are trying
to convey a different message regarding setup. Which may include oblique angles
regarding camouflage from the intended target (albeit much more in depth than
that simplistic statement). It does involve the concept of the target’s ability
to identify you. Quite possibly it’s more of a movement / camouflage issue versus
placement of decoy. I do enjoy your vids & thank you for posting.

I've killed more turkeys with the cheap soft foam decoys than you can shake a stick at. Plus they are more convenient if you gonna run and gun on the turkey. Just fold them up, stuff em and move.

We used to use a 1/2 car tires on sticks to decoy geese, then later just plop our layout blinds down in the spread without duffing them in at all. Had Delta foam turkey decoys and killed gobblers over them regularly in the 80's. Now you almost have to use real taxidermy decoys or none. Did we just kill the stupid birds off over time?

It’s definitely something to think about. I know there are a lot of times when two toms are together the younger less dominate turkey is the one that comes in to the setup first. Some hunters say you should shoot the second one because he’s more wary one.

I used to use the foam hen decoys and killed more turkeys than I do now with the avian X decoy

You should never put out more than 1 jake or tom in a setup.

Great tip. Too many toms or jakes just look a group of bullies.
