First year turkey hunting opening day heard a gobble about 300 yards away and I literally took off at a dead sprint to this bird I turned into an Olympian and cleared a downed tree like a hurdle. I did not kill the bird
Hahahahahahahhaaha thank you for that
You can’t bayonet charge turkeys.
😂 Now that’s funny. But I think we all have done that once or twice
The playing Hard to get method works in most situations. I’m a run and gunner, but I know when to shut up. Your Set up & timing of calling is absolutely everything
I once left my gun at the truck when I went to check a field to see if there were birds in it. Came up to a big Tom 20yds away with no gun in hand! Always take your gun
lol yeah been there before. Then you rush back to get your gun and they’re gone.
@@InformedOutdoors that’s exactly what happened. Lesson learned
Lol I took my decoys, blind, gun, everything 40 mins into the woods... to forget my shells...
@@travisgowdy2411 oh the memories we make in the woods! Never had a bad day hunting but some days are better than others
Had a massive Tom 20’ away last weekend and I noticed my sig H4 was dead as I was about to take the shot…
Always pack spares. 👍
Fantastic info 👍🏻

This was me this morning. About 45° this morning in eastern nc. Set up on the ridge over looking a finger creek. Started gobbling behind me about 0830, thought he was moving off with some hens I saw, so I Got impatient. Rounded a thicket and 70 yards to my right all I saw was a white blur. Rookie mistake
Great tips!
Thanks for watching!
I have been hunting turkeys for over 10 years. I was set up with my decoy in the field and I was back in the woods. A turkey gobbled multiple times a long ways away on another property and forty-five minutes later after being totally silent to various calls, he came in behind me and gobbled. I don't know how far away he was when he did so but I think based on how loud he was, he was extremely close (talking within feet) I moved in response and he was gone. (Not sure if he would have walked by me or not but I have had that happen, too (
I’m 15 years old and I didn’t know any of this thank u for advise
Good stuff

Went on my first turkey yesterday and you described perfectly what happened to me, I honestly couldn't wrap my head around what I did wrong. Thanks for the knowledge!
If they gobble like that and I head in the opposite direction but keep calling but they shut up, should I keep calling so they know where I'm at or should I shut off?
I would but spread out like 20 minutes between calls. He most likely is just being silent.
Most of my birds have been killed with a 30 year old ithica 12 gauge with a built in modified choke, a pot call that’s been sanded one too many times, and a pair of foam decoys i bought from the local sporting goods mini storw for five bucks a piece. It’s all about the method.
Mine is over calling I have a bad habit of over calling when a bird gets hot
It’s hard not to keep calling at him.
Worst mistake, first year turkey hunting in 2019. Heard a gobbler on the roost and decided i was gonna get in his bubble, got set up to where i thought was about 60 yards from this turkey. Well when he gobbled again i jumped out of my skin because he was 20 yards away in a tree, needless to say he wasnt there much longer after my soul left my body. Lesson learned, that gobbler could be facing away from you when he gobbles and end up being MUCH closer than expected.
My turkey gobble more than ever since my husband passed away
Hmm, sorry your husband passed.
I’m big on mistake #3 😂
Gobblers can cover more territory, faster than you realize. By not having my gun up with safety off. Thinking I had a bird 50-60 yards out from me has cost me more times than I care to admit.
Good point! Sometimes they work in slowly, others it’s a dead sprint.
Hahaha. That was me the past season. The mid morning Gobbler answered me over 250 yards. I wasn’t prepared, not faced his direction, safety on, everything wrong to miss that Big Bird. Little I knew, turned around he was on top of me. I had little to no time to react. Behind the ground blind, I waved my shotgun towards where he was, he noticed me and went behind the tree trying to take off, on his way out I was only able to see his head, took a panic shot and he flew away. He could’ve been in my game bag if I was, “faced his direction, gun ready to bang, safety off and everything in reverse of what I did.
I’m not a new Turkey hunter. I got one 2 years ago with exact same scenario, but I was all ready that time . We keep learning
Don't over call. That's why I only use slates and a box. Because it makes me not be able o call constantly when he gets close. It's hard to hold your gun on your knee and call with a slate at the same time...Also just because you had one gobbling and just like it happened to me a couple days ago, I was within 100 yards of him off the roost and he drifted away gobbling, doesn't mean you did anything wrong. I shut up and gave him 15 minutes of silence and he went silent so I backed out and tried another angle. But with him on the river, there's only so many ways you can go. so after another 30 minutes I left. There's nothing wrong with backing out and giving up. You can't kill him unless he comes to you, but you can bumble your way around and bugger it up. Back out and try another one, or another day.
Literally just did mistake #2 Saturday.
I shot and missed opening morning so I feel your pain.
Definitely I over call
A few tips for you, if you can’t tell it’s a person behind a decoy while someone is reaping, and you are in shotgun or bow range, you’re the problem. Not them. Also, if you think 3.5” TSS isn’t plumb deadly at 70 yards, you’re also dead wrong there. I don’t do either personally because we have enough birds where I live I don’t need to. However, I get so sick of people knocking how others want to hunt. Everyone’s on the same team unless you’re riding with Biden and if you are, in that case, carry onward.
Bird shot at 70 yards is irresponsible I don't give a f*** who you are or what you say
i hunt turkeys in washington and it’s very steep and the situations seem different. i have a couple questions anyone think they could answer?
Maybe someone with a lot of experience in steep terrain will chime in, but I think that’s where those flat spots become even more important. Even if it’s just a small area with slightly less grade that other areas it could be enough for the toms to want to strut there.
Mine would be missing the turkey at 21 yards
Been there
Don't feel bad, I missed one at 15 feet!
What’s your kill count?
I’m big on mistake #3 😂
