You have to love those 4-4-0 balloon-stack American-classes. They've always been charmers and there's few locomotives more iconic to the U.S. than those. You couldn't ask for a better steam loco to pull a tourist train with, either!
Hey JT, some people think that is an original 440. You should point out that it is a replica engine built by the Kloke Locomotive Works in Elgin, Illinois a few years ago for the Steam Into History group. If I was filthy rich I would have him build me one to play with, too.
This is an excellent video. I need to get there. The Northern Central in Maryland was washed out in 1972. The south end of it is now part of the Baltimore Light Rail and also used by some local freights. It is good to see that something is being done with the line in Pennsylvania. I looked up the locomotive and found that it is a replica. The inclined cylinders date the design to the Civil War at latest. Rogers Locomotive Works made sure you knew when they built one. See the replica of UP 119 for another.
Oh wow, an operating old time 4-4-0 that I didn't know about! Love the old cars too. Didn't know about this railroad. I wonder what that writing used to be on the combine. That is a quiet engine though. I barely heard any chuffing except for the part where it set off the car alarm haha. Awesome video!
I remember when this was a through route between York, PA and Baltimore, MD before Hurricane Agnes put it out of service in 1972. Both freight and passenger trains still ran on this track back then and the line had PRR position light signals. I rode a circular excursion trip over this line back in Summer 1969 which was called, "A Salute To The Golden Spike". Our train left Penn Station in Baltimore and ran up the NEC to Perryville, MD where we switched over to the Columbia & Port Deposit Branch to Harrisburg, PA. The return trip from Harrisburg was down the PRR Northern Central line back to Penn Station. The train was pulled by a couple Canadian steam locomotives with assist by Pennsy helpers. I believe I still have my ticket stub and/or flyer from that trip in my RR collection. This line is also the only rail connection to the outside world for the shortline Stewartstown RR at New Freedom, PA.
WOW !! That is so amazingly stunning. If not for the modern autos, you could be back 150 yrs. A little trackwork (no pun intended) on your part but we'll worth it. A BIG thanks to you! ✌😀
Another successful video, JT !! Don't know how you get so much time to check out all these live action places!!?? But, I'm blessed by your efforts and generousity of sharing with us!! Love ya bro, keep it up!! [ 2 more B&M style Pennsy liveried "Cabeese" !!! Sureal fo' shure! ]
Great video...I have walked the bike path before the rail bed was rebuilt. (about 10 years ago) From Glen Rock to New Freedom. You walk by a sign that says the Mason Dixon line near New Freedom. Never thought I'd see a train on those rails again.
Beautiful locomotive #17. When I think classic steam locomotive this is it. At 11:50 is my favourite view and an awesome crossing. Oh wait 15:25 is pretty darn good too.
Yes, I knew that. I rode this train about 4 years ago and they told us about it. We rode the train to a wye with an old building and they had a recreation with time period costumes.
I sure hope I can film some steam locomotives this year. I do still have a lot of video from last year with steamers to post but a lot of it was recorded in the rain. Guess, what. It's raining again today! I am planning on going to Nevada to film some dry trains when things get back to normal. lol
Always enjoy watching the NCRR...I just wish there was a bit of a grade somewhere on the line as I would love to actually hear that locomotive have to work at some point during the trip, lol.
The restored pennsy signal head near near the station was put in about 19 years ago. I was one of the volunteers involved in that, along with the dinner train that used to run out of New Freedom
Wow that's an original 440 American type steam locomotive right it's not a reproduction if that's an original that's one of the oldest steam locomotives I've ever seen running I wonder if it's older than Eureka and Palisade epic my friend very cool keep up the great work jaw tooth have a great day
awesome video! live-action! how often does the I&O Local word the distillery in Lawrenceburg? just curious I have been wanting to catch that down in Lawrenceburg but never know when it goes through.
I don't know. It depends on the weather and I don't really plan stuff out. If the weather is good I just go somewhere to film. Lol. I do want to return for more street runners at West Brownsville and another one in the center of the state, I forgot the town. I still have a lot of videos to post from Pennsylvania.
I want to return to Stewartstown and film down there by Iron Works Road area. The video that I did for the first steam in 80 years was just done by luck. I was filming in New Freedom and a worker there recognized me and told me that you guys had a steam engine. After that I went to Strasburg to film the 611 with Lero Productions.
Cool bud! Yer not very far from where I live! There are those who have said Lincoln road a train on these rails on his way to give the Gettysburg address and I think those rails were part of the western maryland railroad. 👍👍
Next Sat. my Salvation Army church will go aboard and an actor will play the part of President Abraham Lincoln and reinactors will be playing Civial War soliders. They will reinact the time Abe was to go and give his Gettysburg speach. It's a 2 1/2 hr. trip. $30. a ticket & Veterans at least this time can ride free. I'm an Army Vet. and can't wait. I luv stream trains. Thank you for this video! After showing it to church friends this week maybe they too will sub to your channel.👍💖
0:33. How sad! Seems that all of the people in the video are real except Jaw Tooth. Finally I find out that there is no such person and no one with that name on their birth certificate. Here we are in late November and it feels like finding out the there is no Father Christmas (Santa). :) Good video though.
New Freedom is located just north of the Mason-Dixon line of Maryland in Southern Pennsylvania. It is a few miles west of Interstate 83. There is also a bike trail that runs beside the tracks from North Central Maryland to York, Pennsylvania.
Jawtooth finds the unusual. I realize the steamer is only 6 years old, but it is a shame to have to run it in the rain. Too pretty to get it dirty, unlike Jawtooth. You had some really nice shots along the way but that one shot of a building advertising crabs got to me. I'm off to the grocery store for crabmeat.
@@JawTooth You know...I also would love to actually ride a passenger train. It doesn't matter if it's Electric, Diesel, or Steam. I just wanna ride a passenger train. And maybe even ride the J class 611 one day. Maybe even UP Big Boy 4004. That would be epic.
The old bridge was awesome but but one lane off to the side when it looked as though there could be two lanes. If anyone knows why this is I'm intrested in knowing thanks. Great video
You’re welcome, I live in Lancaster County to the east of York County. We have a lot of unusual tunnels and bridges mostly in the southern parts of either counties.
Lesa Shiminski sadly, no freight, only scenic trains. The line connects to York, Pa, that has a busy short line. York Rail, part of the G&W conglomerate.
Hi Jaw Tooth. I am continuing my leaning about the US railroads (versus the UK Railways). Do you know whether this is a real coal burning steam loco or whether it is an oil burner? It also looks like the loco is so clean etc. is it a replica? Do you happen to know about those two rail coaches, are they restored originals or also replicas? These little "Iron Horses" are iconic and very much part of your country's history. They ran for decades whereas "Big Boy" (although a massive engineering masterpiece) had a very short working life. I imagine that the saddle tank (no 85) would be a restoration as these locos are from a much later period. BTW do you know how long the track is? I looked on the their website and didn't find the answers there.
@@leohoward7282 There are others too. Most of the steam outside of Baldwin and Alco are fairly obscure, but there were quite a few American companies that built steam engines. For diesels, Alco and Baldwin also built quite a few. Most of the older units you will see in the US are EMDs or Alcos. The Baldwins are very rare, as they ceased production after the mid-50s. EMD was owned by General Motors for roughly half a century, and had reporting marks such as Electro-Motive Diesel and General Motors Diesel. It became Progress Rail at the end of GM's ownership. The other company that remains prominent is General Electric. Amtrak switched to GE units after their last EMDs. I believe that all new Amtrak locomotives are now built by Siemens. EMD really just builds engines for freight trains any longer, but then again, that's mostly what they built anyway.
Hi Leo, i am a UK railfan, that lovely engine is a" brand new" engine and very nice it is too!Classic wheel arrangement for US locos of it day,the middle 1800's to around 1900,,they are very elegant designs.were a standard all over the USA.

Such a gorgeous little steam engine with all that burgundy trimming and polished brass gleaming against the black. Beautiful!

this engine is brand new, was built like 5 years ago or something like that. Its a neat little engine.
N0 bike path keep the small train instead.
The bike path was there way before they started running trains again
The writing on the combine was basically an advertisement for a local bank. Kinda ruined the period appearance.

Great to see steam return back on the rails like it did in the 50s
That engine is a classic design. It would be right at home on Petticoat Junction. Disneyland still uses a couple, running off LP gas.

Cool find, Brian. As always, thanks for posting.
That old steamer has a lot of brass parts. That's a beautiful rig. Keep on training 🚆
The engine and tender are new, built from scratch I think it cost about $3 million

wonder how far that black engine #85 @2:15 can go without a tender car for water and fuel?
Awesome video! Is this locomotive wood or oil fired?
Bessemer & Lake Erie 902 probably propane, just my guess, but minimal smoke indicates this.

Handy to have someone at each crossing
