Yeah immediately when I saw that shot of him skating across the water in Sonic 3 I thought "Oh they definitely looked at footage of professional roller bladers or something because this looks very convincing"
I mean, they are AIRSHOES. It’s going to look like he’s ice skating in more recent titles. He’s still skating at the end of the day. Even if he doesn’t look like he’s rollerblading.
No joke, while struggling to figure out how to roller skate, I remembered the skating animation from Shadow Generations (it was late August-early September, so the only times we saw it was through trailer shots). I then proceeded to master the skating by copying his movements.

Ngl I kinda prefer the slower pushes of the later games compared to his frantic pace in SA2 It just feels like it makes sense that he starts with faster movements and then gets slower as his speed increases, and he's just gliding across the ground
His Generations one is how Shadow skating should look like him putting force in every skate he makes. I know a lot of people don't like his animation where he boosts Instead of skate but I'm fine with it.
I love how in SA2 when he begins to skate, he does it effortlessly. He doesn't begin to show exertion until he starts to go faster. It just matches his stoic nature
@@TRZ-Official The light coming from his boots, and his effortless glide, it's all part of what makes it satisfying. Something artist haven't been able to recreate.
@@casf120 I love the light, it's so much better than the fire. Ngl though, the movie does it best with the blue flame. Making it blue was such a good decision, it looks a lot more appealing imo.
This makes me think of speed skating, though the rhythm would be the opposite of SA2. Starts fast and choppy, then once at speed turns into long, forceful strides using the whole body. It should look almost effortless while the skater is moving 30+ mph.
As somebody who grew up rollerblading, I can feel the effort and connection Shadow has in SA2 but the rest feel like there's no impact with the ground. You gotta feel that push, ya know?
There was something that was very satisfying about just skating around the void in shadow generations. To your point, sometimes it made me not want to hold my boost down when i was playing the levels because it's not as cool
I miss how his shoes would actually have the rockets going off while he was running, they got rid of that in the later games and I miss it cause it looks really cool
Please actually understand skating before you make a video about skating animations. You don't move your arms and legs more the faster you go like the way he does in sa2 you actually move slower as you're no longer need to build speed by pushing yourself Also 2:25 saying ketchup doesn't belong on fries is insane
I'm talking about the animation from the pov an animator specifically, not the physics of staking. Nowhere in my video do I say I intend to discuss the physics of skating. I'm only talking about how it looks. Also I know you're supposed to move them slower, that's why I recommended him taking longer strides for the Gens boost animation.
This might be an unpopular opinion but i put Heroes and 05 just a bit above Sa2. Because its just so fluid and smooth. Especially with the squash and stretch with 05
In the scene where Shadow is running on the wall (in the movie), it shows him shifting into the flying. I think they’re just showing he can do more than just skate with the air shoes.
I think his skating animation in each game is supposed to be canonical to what state of mind he is in. He was skating like that in SA2 because he was determined, He had a mission that he was desperate to se through to the end, The destruction of earth. He isn’t putting effort into his skating nowadays because he is no longer rightfully pissed like he was back in SA2. That doesn’t mean i wanna see that sauce with the skating again though🔥
I know it sucks but I love his 06 skating animation. Something about the way he flails his arms and legs around is just neat to me. P-06 defo did it better tho
Shadow's skating animation might actually be the best animation in all of SA2. It's definitely the best running animation... and definitely better than Sonic being set to vibrate...
Is it bad that i kinda like the hovering boost? I like how it shows how powerful shadow is, being able to hover even slightly without anything boosting his power (the shoes are probably aiding in propelling him forwards and not aiding in the hover due to the boosters not facing the ground)
Unfortunate for his own game. I agree with you. It seems though that it has nothing to do with the animation itself. His quills are less dynamic/"stylised", and so far that's the difference I noticed.
SA2 looked the best cos of the speed the animation played at i reckon. he needs to be moving his legs faster otherwise it feels like the shoes are doing literally ALL the work lol
I don't think his boosting animation is him being propelled by his shoes, I think it's similar to how he flies past Sonic with the emerald when they first meet but to a much lesser extent obviously.
It's not a matter of think. He is using his airshoes, but the thing is that its effects are overshadowed by the other visual effects produced while boosting. Noone is talking about this, but the movie Shadow DLC changed the color of it, which is now very seeable and nice (it's inline with the movie's color choice). It's very weird that a movie DLC pack, still in development too, does the airshoe exhaust thing better than the main game (that it's a part of) itself (especially when certain games before it, like Sonic Dash among others, pulled it off).

@windy3935 1. I specifically put that I had the footage of the mod because it was difficult to get footage of him during the bossfight, not because I "couldn't find it". There's no point in exchanging opinions in life if everyone's is somehow always equal at all times. Anyways... Most general depictions of top speed, when a character has the option to run or fly, is flying (yes even on ground/flat terrain). I "wonder" why that is. Secondly, objectively Shadow gets more out of and can move at faster speeds when using his air-shoes the way he does while boosting (hence why he does it). It's not exclusive to the games either, will be seen in Sonic Movie 3 (literal transitions from skating to flying), a place tied even closely/closer with realism. The best skating by far has to be this guy: ua-cam.com/video/ChKErdAd5zs/v-deo.htmlsi=aMrBwNDYKllRBRBw (Game wise, I’d say the Sonic Generations mod is the best, SA2 definitely had the second best, but he is rather frantic, it’s kinda goofy. The generation mods’s skating, with some more easing could be the best of the bunch.
If Sonic Generations has the best, then logically Sonic Forces has the second best (or rather is equal). I still wouldn't say SA2's is second or third. There are previous skating animations similar to Gens/Forces, even.
(Edit: Perhaps I was a bit blunt, but I don't really see that as a bad thing nor as inherently rude. I still stand by the message behind the original comment. Sorry if bluntness can hurt the feelings of some, but my directness is a sign of respect. As I'm being just as direct as I am with myself, and trusting that you can handle it as well as I can and take the message from it.) Literally nothing of value was added to the discussion, in this video. "Sauce" is not a valid descriptor that says anything meaningful about what makes his skating animation good or not. Talk about the dynamics of how his skating is supposed to work mechanically. How his shoes interact with the ground. How, since hovering would mean no friction, his skating form would affect how he propels himself forward. How his boost would affect all the above. How this needs to look in order to be believable. Something with substance, instead of wasting the viewers' time.
I appreciate your input, but there's no need to be rude. This video was not supposed to provide an objective point of view of the animation or how it would look using real physics. If it was the point then that's what the video would be about. It's about my opinion on the animation, from the POV of an animator. I'm specifically talking about how it looks purely from an animation perspective and not how it actually functions. If I was, this video would be about the physics of the animation. But it isn't, hence why you are wrong. The purpose of this video is not to "add value" to a greater discussion, it's to share my opinion. If you feel like you are wasting your time by watching my content, by all means don't watch it. The only person wasting their time here is you by making a comment that in my opinion, was pointless. (Edit: From what I understand you're asking me to dive deeper into the science of the animations and why some things look the way they do. Of course there isn't anything wrong with that but you're acting like my video is objectively worse because I didn't talk about those things, when those topics really weren't my intention for the video. Thanks for sharing your opinion.)
Hey dude I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I really wanna start doing commentary similar to you but I feel like when I talk I’m just not very confident. Do you have any suggestions? Like for example I want my sentence and speech to come off natural, but I feel like I come off as hyper and just insane and I don’t like that. 😢 do you have any suggestions? 😅
I’m not him, but I’d say practice recording sessions can be helpful in getting used to speaking on camera. And after a couple just doing it. If using scripts, they do need to be good, so reviewing them even after being written, and practice over time could help.
@EagleTronStudios Hey man! Honestly the best thing you can do is practice. Talk slowly(not too slowly!) and calm, and make sure what your saying has direction behind it. I didn't really script out a few of my early videos but I did have an outline for them which is really helpful to make sure you stay on track with the topic. Another thing I recommend is seeing how other UA-camrs talk when they do commentary. That helped me a lot with figuring out how exactly I wanted to sound. Of course it's different for everyone since we all have different voices and ways of expressing ourselves, but the main thing for me is try to be unique. When viewers hear your voice they should instantly know what kind of video it's gonna be, so make sure you aren't changing your natural voice to the point where it isn't you. Best of luck bro!
Shadow generations and forces look terrible to me. There isnt any effort being put forth and he's scrapping his shoes on the ground with each glide. I miss the chunky SA2 sway, they never did it right since that game to me. There really feels like a loss of genuine effort from Shadow that made his speed feel justified.
It uses Shadow's ingame skating animation from Generations. I literally put text there to explain that it was the only way I could find a good look at the animation.
And you lost me the moment you said SA2 had the best skating animation before even GETTING to the other games...cause fanboys just can't stop singing their praises of SA2
In a perfect world, we wod gave kept his SA2 style(which is based on the real life double-push inline skating form) but have his push speed slow down similar to real skating at high speeds. I hate the glide with every fiber of my being, it is so sauceless and lame and boring, mofo looks like a statue.

Everybody's opinion being equally valid is what subjectivity means. So the phrase "it's hardly an opinion" really makes no sense to me. I respect your opinion tho 👍🏽
The best skating by far has to be this guy: ua-cam.com/video/ChKErdAd5zs/v-deo.htmlsi=aMrBwNDYKllRBRBw
(Game wise, I’d say the Sonic Generations mod is the best, SA2 definitely had the second best, but he is rather frantic, it’s kinda goofy. The generation mods’s skating, with some more easing could be the best of the bunch.
If Sonic Generations has the best, then logically Sonic Forces has the second best (or rather is equal). I still wouldn't say SA2's is second or third. There are previous skating animations similar to Gens/Forces, even.
@ actually yeah I agree with that
@ I think I just prefer shadow skating in gens and forced (and SXSG).
(Edit: Perhaps I was a bit blunt, but I don't really see that as a bad thing nor as inherently rude. I still stand by the message behind the original comment.
Sorry if bluntness can hurt the feelings of some, but my directness is a sign of respect. As I'm being just as direct as I am with myself, and trusting that you can handle it as well as I can and take the message from it.)
Literally nothing of value was added to the discussion, in this video.
I love how he's tryna give you the pin of shame when you're right
As a person who loves looking at the details of animation thx for saving me time
Sa2 is the most jankiest to me tbh
What about sss shadow's animation?
Wasn't going to cover all of them in one video. I said I'd save some more for a part 2.
@TRZ-Official oh alr.
I prefer the hover. All I gotta say.
@Squorzel For sure!
What about the boots in sonic riders?
I wasn't covering a lot of spinoffs this time, I explained I would do it in a second part.
they just make videos about anything these days
What is bro waffling about? 🤔
Why are you talking about a mod like it’s official…
It uses Shadow's ingame skating animation from Generations. I literally put text there to explain that it was the only way I could find a good look at the animation.
sa2 looks janky to me im sorry
sonic P-06 is my favourite
And you lost me the moment you said SA2 had the best skating animation before even GETTING to the other games...cause fanboys just can't stop singing their praises of SA2
Okay? I'm not even an SA2 fanboy, I just like the animation. You do you bro 👍🏽
@@TRZ-Official I'm sorry, that was uncalled for, i'm just sick of seeing SA2 overshadowing other Sonic games, so I get rather heated when it happens
@@firehedgehog1446 No hard feelings bro, it happens. Thanks for apologizing tho 💙
In a perfect world, we wod gave kept his SA2 style(which is based on the real life double-push inline skating form) but have his push speed slow down similar to real skating at high speeds.
I hate the glide with every fiber of my being, it is so sauceless and lame and boring, mofo looks like a statue.
SA2 being the best??🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ YKB
🫱🏿🫲🏼
YEAHHH!!!
@@TRZ-Official Aye, but lowkey, reading some of your comments is irritating because you got people saying stuff like "You shouldn't speak on skating if you dont know anything about it" or "Of course an SA2 fan fanboy thinks it's the best", etc. Meanwhile, I got a dude to inform me on what Shadow's skating form from SA2 represents on one of my Shadow videos 😭
Idk why they're being weird to you, but all I gotta say is bump those fools & keep grinding. From one SA2 Shadow skating animation enthusiast to another✌🏿💕
@@LucarioDXAuraStorm Thanks bro, that means a lot to me 💙 I saw your Shadow video a while back, and really enjoyed it! Keep doin what you're doing! You deserve a lot more subs.
His skating animation in SA2 makes no sense. I'm sorry but it doesn't. Nobody skates that fast. I dare say his animation in Generations is better
I hate his Adventure 2 skating animation, bro looks like a stick when he skates at top speed
Guess I found the most meaningless video on the Internet
Pretty sure that'd be something more like "how to breathe" but whatever floats your boat! 👍🏽
sa2 nostalgia bias is so real, no irl skater moves as fast and janky as that
Oh yeah because I'm not allowed to have a preference 👍🏽
Yeah the boost animation SUCKS.
Honestly I kinda like it, but it would definitely be cooler to have him take longer skating strides.
SA2 shadow skates FASTER as he increases speed
Sega…take notes.
