This is poetic, Barrios es amazing... so sincere in his feelings. He is like Chopin on the guitar.. I just have no words of... how this piece goes sweetely direct to your feelings and makes you cry.
If you think David Russel is more expressive than John Williams then you are a deaf fool. They're both incredible guitarists in their own right, but Williams simply possesses a mastery over the guitar that nobody other than perhaps Segovia himself could ever attain.
Russel is good but he butchers Barrio’s music in my opinion, he way over exaggerates every note, adds way too much rubato. Williams and the recordings of Barrios himself is where it’s at when it comes to Barrios.
@gergthims Yes, exactly, we shouldnt make an argument about music. Music is for listening, and enjoying. Who cares who is best, i care that he plays the piece and it is beautiful. Even if someone can play better, what does it matter, and what does it accomplish.
Another spectacular interpretation by David Russell. Shame about the heavy compression. YT should compress the most unpopular in a category over time, and restore the best to their full resolution.
She looks charming (She is the young woman on the left side, just near Barrios). Make a google images search : normanacsa julia Florida She appears on the first image...
Music has no class nor social status. It's THE universal language. If you can't sit back and just enjoy the music, then I hope you have an interesting life with your narrow attitude towards music.
russel has never been one of my favorites, but one must respect everyones taste. since some dude has removed sölscher's "julia florida" from youtube, i recommend berta rojas rendition. as for me, certainly the best
this piece is very difficult to play. Demanding in a musical way. Any good classical guitarist can play "the notes", it's not that hard, but the rhythm... especially, the constant rubato.... that's another question. I personally prefer William's version, but this is one is also flawless. Great guitarist.
Does anyone but me hate the comparisons game? I don't mean the commentaries about varying interpretations, but the simplistic 'he's better, she's better' nonsense, especially when it involves sports metaphors. Russell is a genius, but other people also have something to say about this piece.
Don't forget, there certainly are male angels. And our man Dave surly proves that...Some don't care for this treatment of "Julia". That's your right to. If you are judging this only from this video, not having seen Mr. Russell in person, you are not hearing the graceful way this really sounds. It's a poor recording.. And there ain't no poorly-lengthed fermati anywhere either. This is a perfect performance,....soup to nuts...
I'm just gonna say it this song would be better slower. fuck the shit music timing. i know most wouldn't agree, but play it slow maybe you would agree.
Jive51, please stop letting people know what you would like them to do on basis that you hold the unbreakable truth and that anyone who doesn't agree is an ignorant. arogant fool. I know when I hear a poor musical performance and this is one. He plays Julia Florida as if it was some kind of galant style comp. with trite emotionalism. This is a pure romantic piece for heaven's sake.
I DON'T LIKE HIS sudden stopping of the meter on some notes. It does not work. nice tone. bad dynamics. very bad rythm. he just kills the poesie in this song by breaking the flow all the time. I HATE it. Sounds like he got bored with the piece.
Why do people associate guitar music with swank looking rooms full of aristocratic looking crap? Guitar is historically the instrument of the poor man!!
This is poetic, Barrios es amazing... so sincere in his feelings. He is like Chopin on the guitar.. I just have no words of... how this piece goes sweetely direct to your feelings and makes you cry.
Totally without pretense. Genuine and pure. Such beautiful flow and phrasing. Always a step above the rest.
Just got a new Almansa for Christmas, and getting back to Julia for the first time in about six years. So happy.
david russel is so expressive, much more so than Williams and many others this is why I prefer him.
If you think David Russel is more expressive than John Williams then you are a deaf fool. They're both incredible guitarists in their own right, but Williams simply possesses a mastery over the guitar that nobody other than perhaps Segovia himself could ever attain.

Mr. Russell is easily among the finest guitarists before the public today. This piece is a joy to hear.
Beautiful. It's one of my favourite songs on the classical guitar.
very melodic beautiful piece, inspiring, played with feeling; first class performance.
This is by far the best interpretation of this piece that i've heard to date! Davids at the top of his game, and everybody just can't catch up!
one of the best executions of this piece
Mi piace molto, interpretazione equilibrata e appassionata, sobria, elegante.

DAVID YOU ARE AMAZING!!

Nice, Russell its my second favorite classical guitarrist

This might be the best piece that Barrios wrote!
fantastic
@piquedard yeah, Berta's Barrios interpretations are really good.
thank you very much..
Manuel Barrueco, I think he is as famous as John Williams, Ive never heard the Bach lute suites played so lively and energetic!
This is not Bach though....
it was written in Costa Rica, 1938.-

chopins berceuse in d-flat major has a similar pattern in the bass that kinda reminds me of julias main theme
here i am, here i am, here i am
Because they played for Kings & Queens
Just a little hint of "La Vie en Rose" in there. I wonder if there was a connection.
She looks charming (She is the young woman on the left side, just near Barrios).

id love to see williams' interpretation of this piece
HE USED VERY GOOD THE RUBATO.... THAT GIVES MORE EMOTIONAL DEPTH....
Some good parts in there. I'd name them but it's like "Measre five, beat 2.5" so I'll just say good!
i always wondering what julia florida look like
By the way, im 16 and im gonna join a guitar competition . I think im gonna play this one
THANKS
ΝΙΚΟΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΥ how did you do
Too easy for this altough beautiful don't you think?
how do you like it shokola
adil
how difficult is this compared to most classical guitar songs? I am learning it and wondering
I've played this one before. Its the kind of piece you can spend a week or two learning, but spend a lifetime mastering.
Which guitar he is playing here? It's a M. D? Anybody knows?
Can someone tell me in which year this piece was written please??
December 1938

You mean you haven't listened at Göran Söllcher's!

I prefer berta rojas version... on youtube
@PeaceSells102 delcamp.us
If you have not already done so listen to Jason Vieaux playing this piece on utube not this butchered version by Russel here. It is day and night.

he is an ogro. the ogro of guitar.
Very good but it feels kind of dry (mechanical) and a bit rushed at times.

i don't know.. i don't like russell playing barrios
actually i prefer göran söllcher's interpretation!

Sounds like you want to be heard as the unbreakable truth as well. Let people have their own opinions, strong or otherwise........just like you.
