- Alexandra del Lago, film star in hiding, wakes up in a hotel room with Chance Wayne. "I like you-- you're a nice monster," he tells her. Based on the stage play by Tennessee Williams, directed by Richard Brooks, 1962.
Elia Kazan directed Page's performance in the stage production on Broadway in 1959, so he must have. been a strong influence on her performance in the film. Page lost the Tony award for Best Actress in a play to Anne Bancroft for The Miracle Worker, as she would "lose" the Oscar to her for the film. They each deserved it (as did Katharine Hepburn for Long Day's Journey into Night and Bette Davis for What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Ah, awards.
Dwight Macdonald, Esquire, 1962: "....Whenever [Geraldine Page] is on, one concentrates on her exclusively. She has all the attributes of a great actress--style, presence, wit, timing, emotional mobility, and beauty, or what is the important thing, the ability to give that effect to the audience.... Her triumph is all the greater because the Princess is an excessively unreal role. Miss Page is able to express the grandiose phoniness of the aging star and at the same time to let us glimpse the frightened person underneath... [H]ere is an actress capable of meeting the highest demands in her art."

"Well I was born a monster." For some reason that line reminds me of Geraldine's voice performance as Madame Medusa from The Rescuers.

Geraldine was absolutely inspiring and exquisite in this film! One of my favorites. Wonderful scene.
She's right there with Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn with this performance! (Also in Interiors)

I must confess, I have not seen it. So I googled images. Okay, I can see that-- and in particular, there's a scene in Sweet Bird in which she is on her phone with her agent for awhile-- one of the images that came up for Madam Medusa reminded me of that scene!
