The best actress Oscar may have belonged to Geraldine Page but 11 nominations and no win for Color Purple? Come on....
Eily Bergin Racism.
Steve Urkel Exactly. “The Color Purple” (a movie with an *all-black cast)* lost the “Best Picture” Oscar to “Out of Africa”, which is a movie about *white people* in Africa.
Beethoven’s Fidelio Driving Miss Daisy being nominated and winning over classic Do the Right Thing. Green Book winning over Black Panther and BlackKKlansman.
@@beethovensfidelio And not only is it a film that literally romanticizes colonialism, it's also just a very forgettable movie.
I don't mind that The Color Purple lost 11 Oscars because IMO only the soundtrack, the cinematography, and Whoopi were contenders out of any of its nominations. However, Out of Africa? That movie was so 1980s Oscar fare and NOT in a good way. It makes Green Book's win much better in comparison and I hated Green Book's win over the likes of so many more worthy films including but not limited to Blackkklansman. I use Blackkklansman as an example because to me, it was like the complete opposite of what Green Book was about and much more on point than Green Book regarding America and racial relations. The only saving grace of Green Book winning was that it stopped 4-time Oscar winner and absolutely horrible movie Bohemian Rhapsody from winning. I was seriously getting scared about that winning after it won it's 4th Oscar of the night.
The Color Purple losing to Out of Africa is like the Academy version of Separate but Equal politics. It’s like the the academy was saying “ You have our attention but not our admiration”
BOTH movies were incredible. I think that is a legit win. Out of Africa was EPIC
@@HEllis-qu5nn Not even close imo. The Color Purple was much better than Out of Africa, and plenty movies that weren’t even on the table that night, namely “Back to the Future” and “Come And See”, blew Out of Africa outta the park.
@@HEllis-qu5nn I agree.
@@heywoodjablome7535 but wasn't back to future not critically acclaimed at the time?
@@takemyhand1988 Nah it was popular an well liked, maybe not seen as high art of anything but people liked it
I always thought that the "It was their time" nonsense always cheated the rest who should be awarded for current work. That is why there is a lifetime award.
I agree!!!
That's essentially a deathbed award, and is perceived to have less honor and prestige by default
The issue is that you have to end the chain so that people aren't overdue or getting a makeup award.
I'm relieved that in general we can at least recognize an amazing film in history even if it doesn't have that preface to its title.
@The Pasty British Guy From Wonderwoman I'm saying the general chain of people not getting for one performance really deserving and sometimes getting it for a less deserving later on. Directors or actors (most other categories don't get this unless it's more about rewarding a director or actor). Not just this particular.
Again with this same logic. Even though I don't wholeheartedly agree with overdue Oscar, I think part of the reasons is because they at least gave win worthy performances several times in the past. For example, Geraldine should have won for Sweet bird of youth, Interiors and Pope of Greenwich. Likewise, Close should have won for Garp, Fatal attraction and Dangerous liaisons. There have been atrocious wins in the past, so why not give these proven talented actress award recognition at last? On the other hand, winning an Oscar so early in the does not always guarantee a fantastic career (Halle Berry, Hilary Swank, etc) so an Oscar in this case can be a waste. Also as the above user suggest, lifetime achievement award is basically "we know you are about to die but we won't forget you" award and it would be unfair to those excellent actors not getting proper recognition (believe me but this phenomenon is much more common than you are indicating here)
The Color Purple is one of those rare movies wherein the entire audience cries no matter what country you see it in.
Xtra Delite you mean only black people? Because outside America nobody gives a fuck about Color Purple.
I cried when I seen it and I was around 7 years old
@@prashantsingh9068 I am a white guy from Poland. I watched "The Color Purple" for the 1st time around 1990 when it was run on tv and I cried like a baby. At the re-run I recorded it to VHS so I could watch it (and cry) over and over again. Since the soundtrack was not available in my country, I spent a (then) small fortune to get the CD from the US and even listening to some particular tracks made me cry. It still does to these days. Believe me, I know lots of non-American, non-black people who consider this movie one of the greatest films of all times, which it undoubtedly is. It may have lost the Oscars, but it has won so much more: a special place in the millions of movie lovers' hearts. And nearly 35 years after its release we still discuss it.
@@prashantsingh9068 Not true. I'm from Europe and the movie is amazing. And well known
I really wanna know the reaction of African about this movie, because in Asia nobody knows about this movie's existence.

@Giovanna R. The Oscars were in April 1963 and Joan delivered it to Bancroft some two weeks later. So not a year. Poor bitter mangled Bette. She made those statements long after Joan was gone and couldn't defend herself.
Hard to believe since color purple is still praised to this day. At the end of the day it isn’t like Whoopi Goldberg is salty every morning she wakes up
It's funny how often the film that gets snubbed is the one that stays in peoples minds. Barely anyone talks about the films that competed against Color Purple any more while that film is rightly considered a classic.
It’s like she said in the video here - Out of Africa is good but formulaic - Color Purple is remembered because it was different
J P Out Of Africa has certainly impacted popular culture, some of the lines, the fashion, and Taylor Swift’s music video for Wildest Dreams has OOA written all over it.
@@dtoudassous So is Out of Africa. I don't think either is major influence today really. However look in context, The Colour Purple isn't rated close to Spielberg's best.

Oh honey noooo don't make me spit out my tea😂😂
I was today years old when I heard of ,”Out Of Africa.”
Lucky you. I was dragged to the movie by my parents when I was a kid. I can’t talk about it’s quality because I was way too young and way too ADHD for it. I didn’t see large chunks of it because I was wandering around the theater lobby. I have no interest in trying again now that I’m an adult, though.
The Color Purple is a better movie compared to Out Of Africa.
You missed nothing. Long and boring.
Yeah, its a bit tragic considering how much "The Color Purple" has stood the test of time, and ignited whole careers that it walked away with 0. And the ones that walked away with awards aren't even remembered today.
Actually out of Africa was a good movie but color purple was way better.
Seeing those Black women smile when they spoke of Whoopi warmed my heart 💛
i didn't like whoopi finally getting her oscar for a stereotypical sassy black lady in "ghost." not to mention that people nowadays don't think of her as a dramatic actress at all. it kinda pisses me off
Finally? It was her 2nd nomination, 5 years in the business
@@Starkardur i don't mean it in terms of how long she was in the business. I mean it took her taking an arguably demeaning role to actually get the recognition of an academy award.

I had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard at Joan Crawford’s campaigning skills!
Despite being a huge Bette Davis Fan I gotta admit that Anne Bancroft was brilliant in "The miracle worker"! She had good chances to win even without Joan Crawford's campaign.
@@RobertoLorenzPianist Joan Crawford did not campaign against Bette Davis. No proof whatsoever. And the show Feud doesn't count as an accurate representation.
Can you do a video on how both Beatrice Straight & Judi Dench won Oscars with less than 10 minutes of screentime
First go best actress
I'd love a video on actors that won with the shortest screen time.
I can understand the Judi Dench win but not the totally unremarkable Beatrice Straight, or for that matter Lee Grant, Miyoshi Umeki (Sayonara 1957, one never noticed she was there) or the Patricia Neal Lead Actress win for Hud (1963) with just 22min of screen time.
philipc67 Shakespeare in Love stole 3 Oscars. That must be some kind of record.
Mr. W Well I certainly did not agree with Gwyneth’s win and definitely preferred Cate Blanchett in the Elizabeth film. Both movies of course were fictionalized with many glaring historical inaccuracies
I audibly gasped when I got this notification! I love your channel and all that you do!!❤️
J S Same!
I remember Oprah saying that someone in association with the Oscars told them at the Oscars that "The Color Purple" will not win a single oscar that they should be honored just to be there. I wish I could find that interview
Seems that would have made headlines if that was an exact quote. Perhaps that is how they were made to feel but to say it out loud and no one raised a voice? I wish you could find that interview.

The Color Purple: an all time classic and one of my favorites.
Out of Africa: who???
Geraldine Page was also blacked list after Hondo, for ties to communist sympathizes that jeopardized her career in film for ten years.
I mean in theory being a communist sounds kinda great equality for all but I mean in all honestly Someone is benefiting from making the majority of people equal it’s like all things in moderate dosages it’s good
I've been waiting for this one! I did a college paper on The Color Purple's loss of all 11 of its nominations. I agree with everything you said. I do also believe that a film that focused almost solely on female protagonists didn't stand a chance with Academy voters.
Yes, 11 nominations for Color Purple and no wins racist and sexist.
Black female protagonists at that!
Well, "All About Eve" was a very female-centric movie that won 6 oscars, including Best Picture.
@@wylier Yes, but the actresses in "All About Eve" were WHITE. The actresses in "The Color Purple" were black.

I’m a black man and very sensitive to the unconscious racial biases in Hollywood movies..but Geraldine Page gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen on film in Bountiful. There was no question she is the greater actress and performance. Well deserved.
Thank you. I can't imagine deciding which actress to choose out of all those. They were all great! But Page's character really got to me. Many of us have beautiful places and times in our hearts, that are gone forever, and it hurts.
Sophia was outstanding in “Two Women”!!!
@@carolsmart238
That film was 1960. This is about the 1985 Oscars.
I remember how some black activists were pissed at Color Purple.
I still think that it was criminal that The Color Purple did not win one Oscar... and yes I think Oprah was robbed!
If we look at awards season, I think everyone had Oprah and their second choice. I would love to see how many votes each actress got, but I'm sure Oprah was very close to winning, as well as Miss Goldberg
The Color Purple should have won every award it was nominated for that year.
I'm going to be a devil's advocate here, the two standouts in the film were Quincy Jones' soundtrack and Allen Daviau's cinematography, and they both got robbed like nobody's business. .
Anjelica Houston won for a movie that isn't very good, imo. She had Hollywood legacy on her side. Half the academy knew her father and had basically watched her grow up.
@@AllGreyEverything I don't think Prizzi's Honor was a classic or anything, but it was a whole lot better than The Color Purple. Anjelica Huston's win was backed up but hundreds of critics awards who awarded her prior to the Oscars. I admit, I watched all of the Best Supporting Actress nominees from that year and at first I was like "that's all the screen time she had?" expected a much more boisterous performance for all the awards she won that year for it. But then out of all the nominees, Huston's performance was the one that stayed with me the most. I still don't know why, but it did. Maybe it was John Huston's masterful directing and the way he lit her. I think Huston captured his daughter better than Spielberg did with both Avery and Oprah (who IMO I still don't think did that great of an acting job. Provided very little nuance or subtext to the character of Sophia).
It's insane how much studio politics play into the race for an Oscar! Glad this channel dives into the details thoroughly from a lot of different angles :)
The Color Purple is still one of my all-time favorite movies. What a great story......
Your videos are always beautifully done, and well worth the wait. Clearly, you understand the meaning of quality over quantity!
I second this 🙌🏻

I think we can all agree that Geraldine was long overdue an Oscar but this was whoopi’s year
Yes, it's that simple/obvious.
J S Cicely Tyson still talks about Geraldine Page's magnificent performance in that film. Cicely, after she saw the film, wanted to do a film and role like that of Geraldine Page's and she did that on Broadway by playing the same character in it's stage version. Geraldine Page is a very underrated actress and that's why nobody talks about her. She was a character actress and not a Box Office Star with blockbusters to her credit. While Whoopi is always on TV and black people are always playing victim/whining about this film. Outside US, nobody gives a fuck about Color Purple.
I think the only ones who agree are those who fall for the propaganda as if it was absolute truth and didn't see Page's performance (or any of the other performances). Whoopi was amazing and would have been a worthy winner. However, Page was also a worthy winner and deserved her award as well.
No, watch The Trip to Bountiful AND Out of Africa. Either Geraldine or Meryl should've won that year, not Whoopi.
I wonder if this will happen next year between Jennifer Hudson and Glenn Close
And Geraldine Page is my favorite actress. Her performance in Interiors was... beyond incredible!!
It'd never heard of her until today
In Interiors she was amazing.
Look up her performance in Pope of Greenwich Village on youtube. She's amazing
I wish she had her Oscar for that Film instead.
The NAACP was so hypocritical about “The Color Purple.” When it came out, the organization complained that it portrayed black men as violent toward women. Then the group publicly railed against the Oscar losses. What’s the happy medium? 🤷🏽♂️
I’d love to see you cover two Best Supporting Actresses: Marisa Tomei for “My Cousin Vinny” (and the controversy surrounding it) and Kim Basinger for “L.A. Confidential”, who served as an important comeback and the narrative to that.
Marisa was fantastic in "My Cousin Vinny" one of the funniest performances ever.
"She can't play a beautiful woman" UUHHMM? I'm sorry? WHAT? Wow... what a... wow.
Geraldine won for her Long career BUT Whoopi should have won that Oscar.
I was kind of disappointed when Whoopi didn't win but Geraldine Page had been nominated so many times it was definitely her year to win/shine. But... 🤷🏾♀️
@Michael Freed Not for Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Streisand.
@@Zeldarw104 Yeah and she died 2 years after that so in a way I'm glad she had her moment. And over the years The Color Purple has aged really well among new audiences unlike The Trip to Bountiful
@@gpad1772 Not this millennial that movie gets worse as I get older and watch more films to refine my taste . Anyway whether something "ages well" depends on how many people keep promoting propaganda to market films way after release v. those who don't have those resources. Most people who claim that Goldberg deserved it never watched The Trip to Bountiful. That's because The Color Purple had much bigger and powerful people behind it to keep it going. The Trip to Bountiful was a small independent film based on an Off-Broadway play. Of course it couldn't compete against the likes of Spielberg and Quincy Jones and Alice Walker. The Trip to Bountiful still had legs though as it was revived on Broadway with Cicely Tyson who won a Tony Award for it which inspired a tv movie adaptation where Tyson was nominated for an Emmy. I swear, people like David v. Goliath stories, but only selectively. Here, The Color Purple is Goliath. Anyway, I think those black critics who didn't like The Color Purple were right on the money. It took a great book and turned it into a sentimental immature cartoon. Only Goldberg's performance saved it.
@@SDoesNotKnow I agree. While I did not see Geraldine's film, I did watch The Color Purple and found it overly slick to be properly engaging. Typically Spielberg I suppose. That final scene with her children in the distance having their colourful shawls blowing in the wind was the final cringe-worthy straw that just broke my patience.
Can't wait in a decade when retrospectives ponder why tf "Green Book" won Best Picture over masterpieces like "The Favourite" & "Roma." Love your videos as always!
Roma and BlackkKlansman was better than Green Book.
Very true. It's sad the Hollywood press chooses to patronize rather than recognise and award hard work. Throws me off as a POC and is ultimately insulting. POC's do not want hand-outs. Award POC's for their commendable work not because the climate demands it. Just like the 2021 Emmy's gave POC's the most awards ever because it's Covid season and no-one really cares. This mentality and attitude needs to change.
Do I smell a rat?
I remember seeing "The trip to bountiful" as a little kid in the 80s on like HBO. I had such an intense emotional reaction to Geraldine's performance that even my parents could not console me and I ended up crying myself to sleep. Though I remembered the experience of the movie, I could not remember the name.
The Color Purple is so underrated
If its soo underrated why all of the nominations also turned into a broadway play
Its overrated
What??? 😆
Leonardo DiCaprio has mentioned ‘The Color Purple’ is the movie that made him want to become an actor/there are 2 sequels to the book and yet neither one has been made into a movie. It’s success/existence has been…acknowledged; but not duplicated or celebrated (hence lack of sequel movies).
The Color Purple is still one of my favorite movies
Whoopi Goldberg should’ve won for THE COLOR PURPLE as Viola Davis should’ve won for THE HELP. I always found interesting that while they both lost in the best actress category and won in supporting roles in GHOST and FENCES.
This has happened to multiple actresses, Cate Blanchet, Kate Winslett, Juliette Binoche, Judy Dench. ALl got Supporting Actress Oscars a few years after they were believed to be Snubbed for outstanding performances or a string of them.

I certainly agree that Viola Davis was robbed!!! I was so angry to see Streep win...
Viola regretted doing The Help, so maybe it was for the best that she didn't win

The Color Purple really was robbed. I do also wish I could see Whoopi in more dramatic roles these days.
Get off daytime tv talk shows, and take a meaty role again! (And yes, I am somewhat sick of Whoopi’s hot takes)

It sounds like you want her to stop speaking her mind and go back to acting.
She has, she got a role for the new adaptation of the stan by Stephen King.

Yaaass. Now looking forward to Jlaw vs Jessica chastain and Emmanuelle Riva or Penelope Cruz vs viola davis.
I think the video for JLaw winning is basically the same video about the Gwyneth Paltrow/Harvey Weinstein winning. Sadly.
@posao 555 he admitted about JLaw but not with Paltrow? And you are believing a serial nyphomaniac Harvey? Questionable intention, one thing for sure Weinstein wants to prove that he is the reason for this generation's biggest paid actress to win an Oscar despite the fact that he only worked with her once. Not even before Silver Linings and not even after.
To add JLaw already had an OSCAR nomination before she met him, had 2 successful franchise under her name, HUNGER GAMES and XMEN series before she met him. Became the biggest paid new actress before she met him. All of that before she met him.
And why would JLaw not admit she was harassed by Weinstein when it will benefit her through public sympathy. The admittance of Weinstein will benefit him. Thats it.
@posao 555 clearly you dont know what you are talking about

Thank you for acknowledging whoopi and the color purple! We rewatch and quote it all the time! I do the patty cake scene with friends 😄 and RIP to Ms. Page. How prophetic was the timing of her win. Would've loved for another tie for that year.
There will always be a dark cloud over the Oscar for shutting out "The Color Purple". It made no sense then and it makes no sense now, especially since TCP has GROWN and has become apart of America's heritage and most classic films in the same way as "Gone With The Wind".
G. Page put in a great performance for "The Trip to Bountiful" but W. Goldberg's performance was greater and definitely more memorable. G. Page died 2 years after her win, so I am not as hostile about her win. I can think of two other films of when G. Page should have won an Oscar but not for this win.
The fact Hollywood doesn't like to talk too much about 1986's Oscar these days is proof they know they messed up and it will forever be a black eye on it's legacy.

I really dislike when two or three really good movies wind up in the same Oscar class. Some years have multiple "winners" that deserve to be awarded. Maybe they should change the rules?
Then that kind of makes the whole thing redundant

Geraldine deserved that Oscar she was brilliant in her performance of a vulnerable soul that had nothing in the present and was seeking the past as a warm setting what her life was filled with love with family. I was hesitant to see this film but came out crying my eyes out for her incredible performance that no- other actresses could perform this part so well. Love her for this movie, "Trip to Bountiful"
Well written and edited! I loved the end when Page said she did a good job!
I'm going to show my age here. I remember seeing "The Color Purple" with my entire college English class. My white college professor adored the book, so she could not wait to see it herself. At our next class, we discussed what we all thought of the movie. Never before have I ever seen any movie polarize so many people.
The white guys hated it. This is NOT Spielberg they griped. No sharks, aliens or bullwhips! The white girls loved it. So touching, so sweet! Then we had the black students... the black males hated it because black men were portrayed in such a negative light. As for the black females, you can guess the obvious. They absolutely loved it and couldn't wait to see it again.
And as for my professor, she though it strayed too far from the source material being the book itself and put the blame right in Spielberg's lap. One more thing: how anyone can say that Streep didn't offer the best performance that year with a straight face is beyond me. Expected standards be damned.
Streep is simply the finest actress in movie history (runner up is Liv Ullman) and "Africa' is the most romantic movie ever made, in the comprehensive sense of the word.
@@rogerpropes7129 - Thirty-five years later and no one ever talks about "Out of Africa." Some movies stand the test of time and others come and go.

@@Pistolwhipperz Opportunity usually goes hand in hand with genuine talent, tho. Meryl actually won no fewer than 2 Oscars before Miramax actually was founded.
I saw both films. A Trip To Bountiful was a good movie. I totally enjoyed watching it, but I forgot about it within a week. The Color Purple grabbed my attention from the first scene of those two girls walking through that field of flowers and held it in an iron grip up to their reunion at the end. To my mind, the most powerful line in the history of movies is the one spoken by Oprah Winfrey: "Get my children out of here. Don't let them see this." I probably misquoted it, but the meaning is stuck in my memory like a white hot brand. We don't actually have to see what is going to happen and we don't, but everybody who lived in the time of the KKK knew what she was saying. I was a white man from Ohio, but I knew. Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah, Winfrey, and the rest of the Cast, along with Steven Spielberg produce a truly Iconic bomb of a picture that deserves to stand alongside Grapes of Wrath as the greatest plea for social justice in movie history.
Bravo! You're absolutely right, Judy's beautiful voice could stop everyone and everything. She was gifted from God with that voice!

Carol Saint Martin I'm sure you and everyone else did but there is no proof that Joan campaigned against Davis. No where did she pointedly ask any Academy members or nominees to please not vote for Bette. And the show Feud does not count as an accurate reference.
I'm a simple guy, a new BKR video is an automatic like
Great job! Ms. Page, my favorite, I never saw her not give an authentic performance.
Geraldine Page and Glenn Close are so underrated that it’s ridiculous.
Page worked steadily for many years, and Glenn at this point is pretty much a household name.
Have any of you even watched A Trip to Bountiful???? Geraldine's performance was stellar and extremely well deserved. Whoopi was great, but Geraldine was still very deserving.
Bountiful is underrated.
I get such a rush of excitement when your videos appear! They’re always great. Keep ‘em coming!
“I received a lovely note of congratulations from Miss Crawford,” said nominee Geraldine Page. “And then she called me. I was tongue-tied, very intimidated in talking with her. To me she was the epitome of a movie star. I always loved her movies . . . All I could manage was, “Yes, Miss Crawford. No, Miss Crawford.’ When she mentioned about accepting the Oscar for me if I won, I said yes. Actually I was relieved. That meant I wouldn’t have to fly all the way to California, or spend a lot of time looking for a new dress to wear. I was happy and honored that Joan Crawford would be doing all of that for me.”
-Geraldine Page
Class act. And no, I'm not referring to "Miss Crawford."
loved this video, I loved Geraldine in interiors, and this made me decide to watch a Trip to Bountiful more! she si an amazing actress. What about doing a video on more recent winners, like Lupita Nyongo who won on her first film but has failed to do any recognizable work or Julianne Moore who was nominated 5 times before winning?
I get so excited each time you post a new video
Still kills me that Whoopi didn’t win that year. Oprah too
Hoping you could feature Kate Winslet's win in The Reader.
I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it, the attention to detail, historical references, the careful research and archival research and painstaking care that are put into these videos is incredible and the humor is pitch perfect and placed so well without taking away from the more academic style of the information being given. One of my favorite youtube channels, always so excited when new content comes out and am perfectly content waiting for it as the quality of the content is just so well produced. Kudos!
15:04 Please help me scream!
I know, right??
Stupid guy! Is he dead now??
You have the most pleasant-sounding voice in all of video essaydom just thought I'd say that
First of all, I can't emphasize enough how much I love your channel. Thank you for all your hard work. Second of all, The Color Purple is one of my favourite movies of all times and I never watched it as a black movie. To be fair, I am not from the US (although I lived in the US for a while) and when I watched the movie for the first time I was totally ignorant of the history and dynamics of racism in the US. Therefore, when I watched The Color Purple for the first time, I perceived it as a woman movie with a universal feminist message against male dominance. It is utterly unfair to dismiss the powerful message of the movie under the shadow of the supposed racism in Hollywood/the Academy/the US. To this day The Color Purple stays as one of my top picks among the movies on women. Lastly, I didn't know that it was Whoopi's first movie. Thank you for enlightening us.
I had no idea who Geraldine Page was.. thanks for the video, very informative
Payback did eventual come. Outside of it’s amazing John Barry score, Out of Africa is usually not remembered. When it is mentioned it is not spoken of fondly. The Color Purple on the other hand is remembered and highly spoken of.
I remember watching The Trip to Bountiful on TV on my Summer vacation about 22 years ago. It's one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Even though I never rewatched it, I never forgot the story... and Geraldine Page's character reminds me so much of my deceased grandmother, her strength of will, traveling alone all those miles just to see her old home one last time. That's the only reason we never tried, I mean, we tried, but we never made my grandma come live with us in the city. She'd be miserable outside her village. When she came to our home on my Xmas vacation, she couldn't wait to leave and see her chickens, take care of her garden... The Trip to Bountiful will always be one of the most special movies I've ever seen.
Having said that (I always laugh at this expression), Whoopi should've won best actress, The Color Purple should've won best picture. I've never watched Out of Africa and I can't STAND IT! You know those movie you know you don't need to watch to know you won't stand? Just reading the synopsis is enough? That's what Out of Africa is to me. Schmaltzy romance is just not my thing... Same thing with The English Patient. Tried to watch it, felt like Elaine Benes screaming at Ralph Finnes to just die already 5 minutes in!
"Because I did a Damn good job as Carrie Watts!" YES SHE DID!@!!
I think I spotted little Angelina Jolie at 17:19 (back to the camera applauding Ms. Page) ...Oh, and somebody named John Voight too.
The color purple is a CLASSIC this it's hurtful
Geraldine Page was Freaking AMAZING in that Movie, The Trip to Bountiful and she deserved to win..However The Color Purple SHOULD HAVE WON BEST PICTURE and BEST DIRECTOR and Best Supporting Actress!!!
The Color Purple deserved several Oscars. We know why it didn't receive any...prejudice.
this was Geraldine Page's consolation Oscar, Whoopi should have won. Ironically, Whoopi would later receive her own (arguably) consolation Oscar for Ghost.
I think it's always kinda strange how many authors don't get recognized for their best work but rewarded for just regular roles.
But really who else could’ve done justice to Oda Mae?
This is the movie Whoopie SHOULD have received the Oscar for!
Also, Geraldine Page originated the role of Mother Miriam Ruth in Agnes of God on Broadway and received a Tony nomination. Years later the screen version went to Anne Bancroft who ironically lost to Page for Bountiful whom Page last to years ago Bancroft (via Joan Crawford !!).
Thank you so much for your wonderful and stimulating content! Every time I see you have made a new video I get very excited! Keep doing what you do!
When I saw the "Green Book" winning i immediately thought about the "Out of Africa" winning. It's ridiculous to me that actual masterpieces like "The Color Purple" and "BlacKkKlanman" were snubbed and soap-opera-bs-level-pieces take home the main award.
(excuse my broken english.
and also i would love to see a video about Frances McDormand both wins.)
Rulvoney P. Junior I personally though Blackkklansmen had no way of winning its only oscsr win was a consolation for Spike and honestly I didn’t like the performances, felt that the directing was the same thing we see from every other Spike lee movie. I thought the score was it’s saving grace. I was however outraged by the green book win; I thought that Roma should had won.
The Blackkklansmans cinematography was beautiful. The story was coherent and made sense. And the acting and writing was there. I thought it has a chance!
Spike was right: "Oscars are so white". Geraldine was a great actress, she deserve it. In the future, I think what happened to her will happen with Amy Adams, she will win for a small picture, after many nominations, against someone as good as her in the same year.
The joke about Joan Crawford was the best.
Love your videos. Don't stop making 'em 🙌
BKR … just came upon this.
Love your analysis and commentary.
I want one for Jessica Lange
Shes such a great actress!! And a beauty
@@blue2134Danm she is one
Video Suggestion That Might Be Successful: Kate Winslet 7 Oscar Nominations, only to win for her most underwhelming performance ( The Reader ) compared to the other nominated ones, ( Titanic, Sense And Sensibility, Quill, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind ), and then never got nominated again as much as before, which led to people thinking that the Academy was giving her an Oscar as a way of celebrating her career more so than her performance. And thank you for the video.
I am honestly kind of surprised she did not win for Titanic or Eternal Sunshine.
Noemi Starlight me too, both those performances were so good, but the one that shocked me the most was her first nomination for “Sense And Sensibility” the Jane Austen film adaptation as Marianne Dashwood, it was so good, I felt like I was watching a person going through heartbreak.
I watched that Oscar night and felt like Whoopi was totally robbed, but it was really a "robbery" of both actresses. BTW I love these Oscar analyses you do. Thank you!
Am a huge fan of Geraldine Page! Thank you so much for this feature! 💗💞
I never knew The Color Purple took home zero Oscars.... that is absolutely outrageous.
It was protested and that scared voters away. Spielberg was also resented especially back then.
@Tolstoy111 ahhhh yeah I guess in context it makes sense. It's just so hard not to look at it now in hindsight
Geraldine Page is a phenomenal actress and her portrayal was heartfelt. As a child she was a favorite of mine.
Idk why people always get surprised when capable comedy actors perform fantastic in drama roles. To be a comedy actor, you have to be a good actor, fullstop.
Agreed. Robin Williams, just phenomenal in Good Will Hunting and my favorite, Dead Poets Society!
Then Jim Carey in Majestic and Truman Show…
