Handsome Chance Wayne never found the Hollywood stardom he craved, but he’s always been a star with the ladies. Now, back in his sleepy, sweaty Gulf Coast hometown, he’s involved with two of them: a washed-up, drug-and-vodka-addled movie queen and the girl he left behind…and in trouble. Paul Newman, Best Actress Oscar® nominee Geraldine Page, Rip Torn and Madeleine Sherwood re-create their stage roles, and Ed Begley gives an Oscar®-winning* portrayal as the town’s corrupt political boss in a bravura film version of Tennessee Williams’ Broadway hit. Sex. Money. Hypocrisy. Financial and emotional blackmail. Familiar elements of Williams’ literary realm combine powerfully as Chance battles his private demons in a desperate bid to redeem his wasted life and recapture his lost sweet bird of youth.
Special Features: "Sweet Bird of Youth: Chasing Time" Featurette; Vintage Rip Torn and Geraldine page Screen Test; Theatrical Trailer (HD).
    Directed By Richard Brooks
Starring Paul Newman, Geraldine Page, Shirley Knight

I first saw this film in 1988 in a college class called Film and Theatre: Tennessee Williams. We read the plays then saw the film adaptations. This was the first time I had seen Geraldine Page as a younger actor - until then I had seen her only in her later years ("The Pope of Greenwich Village," "The Trip to Bountiful"). Her performance in Sweet Bird of Youth blew me away. The instructor for the class was a retired actress who had been directed on the stage by Tennessee Williams himself. She agreed with my admiration of Page. This performance made me understand F. Murray Abraham's comment about her being the greatest actress in the English language before he announced her Oscar win for "The Trip to Bountiful."

Geraldine was beyond brilliant. It's fascinating watching her throughout this film. Her ups and downs, the way she plays with Newman. Just phenomenal

I can never understand the casting back then. Geraldine page was only 37 when she made this. From the script you’d have though she was pushing 65 and then some.

Well, for this specific film, Geraldine Page was cast because, she originated the role on Broadway (and was nominated for a Tony for it). Onstage, it's not really essential for actors to play their actual age (since the audience isn't very close) and it's often frowned upon to even ask an actress' real age when she's auditioning. That said, the age of her character is not, necessarily, quite as far off as you think. Her character, Alexandra Del Lago, is probably only about 10 years older than Geraldine Page really was (i.e. around 47 rather than 65). Remember, when she's referred to as being old or past her prime, that's not from the point of view of a normal person. She's a movie star who was obsessed with youth & beauty. The character is not actually "old", she's middle-aged. But, middle-aged is old to her. In the movie/play, the character retired early so her onscreen image would always be beautiful. That would most likely have happened in her mid to late 30s right when the first signs of aging started to show up (i.e. gray hair/wrinkles). Definitely, before she reached her 40s. Since the character has been retired for 15 years, she would be in her early 50s at the oldest. Still older than Geraldine Page but, not by as big a margin as you were originally thinking.

37 in real life in movie land is the death trap for women who were known for their beauty.
