Your reaction to the corrected sound is glorious!
Grigor: You literally made a video about the _exact_ thing I'm trying to do, and this isn't the first time.
I think it has to do with the fact that those of us 'in the trenches' have similar needs!
I'm just now getting into this software and am blown away by what an effective, simple improvement it is.
Cheers!
Thank you Gregor, I'm already using Sonarworks for my HP monitoring (and Goodhertz Canopener Studio) with tremendous success and am preparing to purchase the room correction module and mic. I believe the new version (Sound ID Reference) has simplified the room correction process, but in any case, you've shown this is a very worthwhile process. TWO THUMBS UP!
Is it expensive for that software
Gregor seems like the kid who mom would punish him with saying "no studying for you today'. He would then burst into tears. His intelligence is resounding and his appreciation for it is very apparent
LOL! If only. My parents & teachers were very worried about me being so uninterested, bored & distracted in class. :D -GBY
Great Timing Gregor! I just got this kit and set it up on Thursday. Love the results. Now I need to learn how to use the listening bus so I can take the plug in off the Main Out channel.
Hi Eamonn, it's very simple! Simply click on the wrench icon in the Mixer to access the Console options, as shown in the video. If you have Studio One 5 Professional, you will see a tick box down there that says "enable Listen Bus". Now all you need to do is make sure that it is assigned to the same Output as your Main Out, and insert the Sonarworks plugin. -GBY
@@presonus Where do see where it is assigned to , after you check the box ?
or how do you assign it ?
@@presonus will the listen bus be able to hear the inserts on the main out channel?
I've been using Sonar Works for headphones for a while now. After seeing your reaction, Im gonna upgrade. Thanks!!!
Great video! I don't have Sonarworks, but I do have Waves Nx. I didn't even know about the listen bus! 🤯 I was putting my Nx plugin on the stereo out bus and then having to turn the plugin off every time I exported a mixdown. After watching this video, I enabled the listen bus and put the Nx plugin on the listen bus. It's absolutely perfect now, and I don't ever have to remember to turn off the plugin! Sagenhaft!
Hi.. I have a basic question - How should one measure Loudness (LUFS), True Peak etc. during mastering when it is used in the project page - with or without Sonarworks EQ correction activated?
Watching you react at the end made my week!
Why did you apply the plugin in the post section, and not as a direct inset? Thank you. Your videos are the best!
That was pretty much my reaction too!! LOVE the magic that is Sonarworks. I have 5 but forgot about the listening bus! D’oh! Thanks for the reminder!
So, this is actually a 9-minute ad for Sonarworks and a 25-second tip on how to set up the Listen Bus. Maybe change the title?
sounds like a good concept . But what to do if you have several pairs of speakers ? Switching speakers works in Cubase 11
How do I do a listen bus on the Project Page for mastering? Also, what about have multiple listen buses, or something like the splitter plugin that could serve as speaker management like a Dangerous D-Box or Mackie Big Knob, but with room correction for each speaker set?
I just love Sonarworks, best money I've spent in a long time.
So just to confirm, the Sonarworks plugin should go into Post insert on the Listen Bus?
SO5 still asks me to bypass when I am exporting a mixdown. 😬
Hi Babul, that is strange - I can’t reproduce that issue here. In any case, you can just disable this notification in Reference 4’s settings now. The Listen Bus will never be used for the actual Mixdown, so you’re fine and won’t need that warning message to pop up anymore. -GBY
Ah ok. So I guess Sonarworks does not realize it’s on the listen bus in SO5 and knows a mix down is happening, so it gives the warning. But SO5 does not use any plugin on the listen bus in mix down. Is that right?
I haven’t fully moved over to SO5 yet, so I can’t turn off the warning because then my projects in SO4 will suffer because I ALWAYS forget 🤦🏽♂️😬🤣
Hi Gregory I put the sonar in the listen bus. But if I use ssl compresor and slate virtual tape on the main it affects the listen bus????
Of course! Because you are still monitoring your MIX! It's just that you are additionally mixing with consideration for your room anamalies. You wouldn't want your Listen Bus to not hear your master effects, right? You wouldn't be able to tell what adjustments they are making.
1st I did not believed in absorption panels. Then room correction. Now I believe in both.
Hi there, great video! I have one question about it: is there a way to use sonarworks studio and headphone version at the same time (one in each bus with different outputs), without the risk of mixdown with corrections? Thanks!!!!
Oh guys, don't make me cry! Great solution!
U a gem Gregor, the reaction video was priceless, gunna correct my room tn! thanks!
Some kind of Listen Bus feature on the Project mastering page to utilize Sonarworks Reference in the same way would be awesome.
Is it possible to use it to tuning a Church speakers?
Then copy that correction eq to a graphic eq.
Thanks
Man, great to have this. I used to have to do a lot of tricks to achieve a similar thing in logic, and very inconvenient. It would be nice though to be tied to the output of the main out. I for example switch between monitors and headphones, and always need to switch in both outs separately. I cannot think of a reason when you would want both heard at the same time.
Also this feature is really missing from the Project page! Would be great to have it there too, it is as, if not more important to have calibrated speakers during mastering (also worse if the correction ends up in the final render by accident).
Is it possible to use it only with headphones on apollo twin and not use at the same time on monitors? How to reach this?
Thanks Gregor, just upgraded to StudioOne5 coming from Reaper. Where to insert the Sonarworks plugin during mastering in the project page? When i put it on post, de LUFS level is not correct anymore.
I've watched many videos, still don't understand the routing. So the master flows through the listen bus?
Yes. But the processing for export stops prior.
Is there a way to *make* a Listen Bus in Studio One Artist? It's the main thing I wish Artist had. Reaper has it ("Monitor FX").
Why did u insert the plugin under Post section and why nit under pre section. I use to insert it in pre
Dear gregor I really hope you still reading this I just bought two sceptre s6's. I finished the room and was ready to use the sonarworks reference id. But i kind of stuck on the part where it asks me to point the mic at the mid driver. Do you have any tips of where it would be best to place the mic. Because it is kind of impossible to place it at the center of the mid driver.
Sonarworks also have no idea what to do.
Whats different about this one than say the IK Multimedia ARC3???
Is it like a control room in Cubase?
Surprised that Presonus is pushing Sonarworks when there are other comparable products out there. I use IK Multimedia's Arc 3 and its superb. 😎
Can you use Goodhertz' Can Opener Studio in conjunction with it in the listening bus?
Yes! Just check if it supports the latest version of Studio One.
Hi Gregor- Thank you for the fantastic content! A quick question- I noticed that you placed the Reference ID plugin on the 'post' section of the inserts in the Listen bus. Does it matter if it's pre or post? Also, should my master bus plugins (limiters, etc) now be placed on the Listen bus after the room correction plugin? Thanks again.
I'm not Greggor, but... He drops it into the POST slot. This makes sense so that it would process sound AFTER the bus, meaning that it won't be applied to your mixdown -- only to your monitoring! So, yes it would seem to matter a great deal!
Master Bus plugins should remain on the Master Bus (i.e. MAIN) if you want them to process your audio. If you want an additional limiter (for hypothetical consideration) simply to not blow your monitors, you could add one to the Listen Bus AFTER the Room Correction.
Question.. I have both Sonorworks (for my room with my Genelecs), and Slate VSX (for headphone reference). I want to have the Sonorworks plugin on my main (for my genelecs) and the Slate VSX on the listening bus going to my headphones. It works, but I also get the Sonorwork processing on the Main through my Listening bus. Is it possible to have these 2 outputs independent? meaning, I don't want to hear the sonorwork plugins on my listening bus.
Put them both on the Listen Bus only. Toggle between which one is on/off (Solod/Muted). Only run one at a time.
Hey Gregor, long time S1 convert and follower. Thanks for another great vid! I cannot seem to figure out how to do what I need, without connecting an external HP amp. Not sure if its possible, and whether its a hardware routing issue, or software routing config issue in S1. Im not clear on how Cue mixes and the Listen Bus work together. In my case with a Quantum 2626. I want my Mix Bus to be clean, routed out nowhere, only for processing mixdowns, bounces, export to MP3, etc. Then on my Listen Bus I have room correction software (ik ARC3), routed to Main Outs on the 2626, going to my studio monitors. The issue is that I want cue mixes to be based on the Mix Bus (no room correction), but I cant seem to have a corrected mix going to my monitors, with a clean mix going to my cue mixes. Thoughts? Thanks and keep up the great work w Joe. Cheers, Bob in NJ,USA
Hi Gregor can this be done with studio one professional?
Hey Gregor,
I have a question about Sonarworks: how do you match the input and output level in Sonarworks to avoid any type of sound coloration? I found that Sonarworks has always different input and output level and that can badly influence all mixing&mastering decisions? ..and Sonarworks supposed to give us FLAT 1:1 sound without any colorations ...and no I'm not talking about obvious solution like SAFE HEADROOM option enabled
Thanks in advance
Sonarworks has to lower the input level to avoid clipping in frequency ranges that need to be boosted in order to achieve linearity. There is no coloration whatsoever, it's just the level that is being adjusted. As long as you bypass Sonarworks inside of the plugin, not by turning it off through Studio One, this won't affect your Mastering decisions in any way. -GBY
I tried to put Reference 4 on the listen bus and used discord to screen share and when I play the song and bypass the plugin (which is not on the main bus output) it seems to affect on my friend's side.. Any tip on how can I listen with Sonarworks on my side while the other side is getting the same mix without my calibration correction?
Why do you not show where you enable the listen bus!!!??
Great information! Keep up the good work!
Yeah - that's all very well - BUT - I've just had to remove Sonarworks from my system 'cos it would not allow me to sort out signal routing with my new Studiolive desk. Presonus support advised this and suggested I talk to Sonarworks to sort it. Which I will but in my case it was not as simple as the video suggests.
It always worked fine with Cubase - but that's not enough of a reason to go back to Cubase.
Thanks for the video, but how can we apply this with multiple sonarworks calibrated monitor sets. For example I have Adams S3H, Aphions One 15's and avantone. Now I use multiple outputs in the master section with The Adams and Amphions calibrated and the avantones not. The Adams are connected to the main out and the amphions and avantones to different outputs. I have two busses calles Mix Bus and Master Bus. The mix bus I use for mastering and all channels (busses) are send to this bus. This bus outputs to the Master bus with just plugins for measurement, no processing. The masterbus is outputting to the main output (Adams) and have 2 sends to send the same signal to the amphions and avantones. Finally I have the Sonarworks plugins on the outputs of the Adams and Amphions with there own profile. Everything comes out on the rednet network and with mute buttons I can switch between the monitors with their calibration activated and at the same listening level. I don't think the Listen bus can handle this, correct ? Would be great to have more listen busses for these cases, I think more people use some sort of calibration software and use multiple monitors.
Make your preset swaps within Sonarworks. I use 3 setups in Samplitude: My mains without sub, Mains with Sub, and Headphones. I can toggle between them or switch them at any point. Should be the same in S1, because you're making the changes within Sonarworks.
Thanks Gregor, I used to use this but it somehow slipped away from my system - I've upgraded to 4.
Question: There's no listen bus on the mastering (aka project) page. I can't see a way of automatically excluding it from burn/image/DDP etc. Do I have to rely on my leaky memory?
Hi Phil, you are correct - The Listen Bus is currently only available on the Song Page. -GBY
@@presonus Thanks for the reply.. I tried splitting to 2 channels at the end of the mastering chain, sending one straight through - the other to a Sonarworks followed by a Pipeline plugin outputting to my monitors, with nothing on the return. Seemed like a plan but I couldn't get it to work and ran out of time!
Would a simple Output plugin be an idea?
Thanks for your great work.
Cheers, Stay safe.
Can we use this with st1 4.5
Yes you can - Although you won't be able to use it as conveniently due to the missing Listen Bus. You will have to insert Reference 4 on the last insert slot of your Main Out chain, and always remember to turn it off before you export a Mixdown. -GBY
awesome video Gregor!!!
Excellent video, Gregor.
Thanks so much! -GBY
haha genuine g-man excitement when switching it on.
Great video! May I ask what that song is you're listening to in the end of the video? Super catchy!
Thanks so much! That's "Enter the Cave" from Dunkelsucht, a song I produced, mixed and mastered :) You can check it out HERE: ua-cam.com/video/YIvIW4prRLk/v-deo.html -GBY
Sonar works is a presonus product?
No, Reference 4 is a product by Sonarworks. It does work wonderfully in combination with PreSonus Studio One 5 though, as you can see. ;) -GBY
why no Tutorial with the PRM1 reference Mic from PRESONUS???
The PRM1 would be a great choice as well. What I like about the Sonarworks measurement microphone is that you can deduct its frequency response from the measurement result, but that is a very minor difference indeed. The PRM1 would be a fantastic choice as well. -GBY
Wow, Gregor, do you actually work with Rammstein? Or did you use just so little of their song not to trigger the copyright algorithm?
Hi Brett, I take that as a compliment :). The Song is actually from one of the bands I produce, called Dunkelsucht. It's called "Enter the Cave" and you can listen to the full song HERE: open.spotify.com/track/3Mlq3rVXXxq0PKIv21EI9Q

@@presonus So that WASN'T Till Linderman signing? It sounds exactly like him, I've seen him live 6 times.
@@brettmarlar4154 Haha, it definitely wasn't :) I'll make sure the compliment is forwarded to the singer (Patrick from Dunkelsucht). -GBY
@@presonus As you should, he's got great pipes! I am impressed!
Can I calibrate my own mic or only sonarworks?
You can use another mic as well - but make sure that it is a neutral, omnidirectional one. Otherwise, the mic will skew the measurement. -GBY
@@presonus Oh no dynamic mics?
@@keyboardmatrix4328 Definitely no. You need a measurement mic. It costs $70, and you should get it together with the software during purchase anyway. This is still cheaper than a few acoustic panels, so just invest the money in it since monitoring is the most important part of your setup that affects everything you do.
Thank you so very much!
You are so welcome!! Thanks Michael!
Works fine in daw, but pops & cracks in windows10 sytstemwide. Tried all options and update but not working for me
i have win 10 no problems with sonarworks systemwide
Hi Farshad, please make sure that you've updated Reference 4 to the latest version. Also try to see if increasing the safety buffer helps. Otherwise, please reach out to Sonarworks tech support. I'm sure they'll help you out. -GBY
Make sure your Windows Audio Settings (WASAPI) match your Sonar DAW Settings (ASIO). i.e. both at 48k. This should solve it.
Capo Gregor!
Hi Bro!Now this utility only worsens the sound when working with Studio One))Respect !
Thx!!!!!!!
sound like alien AI in your room
And another good feature which cannot be accessed by artist users , 🙏 thank you presonus
Sloth Hands, don’t you mean Thanks for the free software Presonus!!
@@chrishorton8460 No, I bought my version. so i ment in a sarcastic way
Sloth Hands my bad! I thought Artist was free, but it’s Prime that’s the free version. D’oh!!
This is why there is a Pro version. You can upgrade if you find the pro version compelling.
@@chaddonal4331 then what's the point of buying an artist version?, in version 5 they made vst support available for free, and no discounts for those who paid for the addons for v4 or earlier..smh pretty much disappointed 😪
👍🏽
Except this video is not about using the listening bus but using sonarworks. Very little info on how to set up and use the listening bus. I tire of misleading video titles.
