the most underrated music video i've ever seen.
This song is so introspective
Saw him live. Incredible.
Amazing
John Smith is marvellous! End of story.
I really like this song a really lot much. That's how much I like it. That's an awful lot.
oh what a beauiful song! x
Not sure how I got here.
Pretty sure though I’m never going to leave....... beautiful.

Just such a great song. Still powerful hearing it years later
He's just the best.
That's a great song!
Splendid. Truly splendid.
This is a lovely song on an excellent album.
Cai de casualidad aca y no me arrepiento!! Increible musica !! Just by pure luck i came in here and i do not feel sorry bout it! Amazing music
Awesomenessnessness!
This guy is fully independent, so it will have taken a huge effort to sync a video to Vevo. Seems he's doing it the old-fashioned way, playing gigs all the time and putting out his own records, with very little mainstream recognition (although the UK newspapers call him a genius). I know Ben Howard openly said that John Smith is his biggest guitar inspiration.
Brazil loves you, you are a perfect artist see and do shows here in Brazil!!!
such a great song. thank you for it
Love this!
Diving into the great lakes of love
...
I feel infinite

It's a great song!!!!
excelente!
Amazing :)
beautiful shot!
Ok, this song is really something. Something beautiful. :)
que hermosa
Any chance you will make a video for Winter? It's my absolute favorite song you've done (although I love all of your work). I had the chance to see Winter live and wow. I love your music, it's beautiful - the rasp of your vocals and the velvet of your guitar - I could just hibernate in it's hum for the winter. It's warmth personified.
Oohh I love it!! Especially the ending :D Happy that I found you on youtube c:
Such a sad song, l thought that the band were going to save him. Watched it five times. Love the lyrics, love the music, felt the pain and really enjoyed watching the video
I like this. :)
Echt een mooi lied!! En een mooie stem en instrumenten.
❤️
Lovely music John. What more do we need? ;)
cooooll
John this is a beautiful video. Worth the chilly dip! Hope you got a hot cocoa when you were done filming... Loving the new album "Great Lakes" too :)
dayum dats cool
:D Very nice
Aside from the obvious, of sharing the Great Lakes with Canada, it was rebecca's comment about John Smith being most common American name....& ya, I went further down the rabbit hole, then I likely oughta....cheers.
nice
seeing this
You have no idea what 'underground' music is do you? You realize that even mainstream artists do 'underground' work as well?
look at groups from the 60s, 70s, 80s and the pre-psychedelic rock/punk revolutions? like i said before even grunge and alternative music started off in the underground scenes, but because they had such huge fan-base/popularity and their own unique sound, they eventually burst into the mainstream and took over the industry. this is what makes artists 'original/different'
Holi :)
j'aime beaucoup mais ça me dérange de publier , triste la fin , par respects aux miens , je ne peux pas partager ...
the way that booshman97. can fly fast is the mod better sprint
Is this the same John Smith who does Survivors or Kickin Stones?
hmm okzz great
Lol your profile pic is exactly how i pictured you saying that to him.
Ricki Hall?
who is randomly watching this?
Dr Who is a singer now ? :o
lol everything looks cooler in slow motion
LOOKS LIKE A "LEE" or "LEVI" JEAN COMMERCIAL
If you want to get really technical, i didnt say the British.
Why so mean?
I´m thinking about the instruments :(
Moriarty, is that you?
"If they were that ground-breaking they would at least have more fans and be taking the music industry by the balls right now"
Ok, so you're saying that good "ground-breaking" music would have a large fan base and take "the music industry by the balls." So you would consider Miley Cyrus "groud-breaking"? Because she has a ton of fans and is basically the music industry's favorite person right now.
Dont get me wrong, i have GREAT respect for the old styles back in the day, from pioneers such as Cash, Dylan, Nelson, Williams etc.. even the old school 60s/70s classics from CCR, Neil Simon, Donavan, Skynard, the birds, james taylor etc.. but today it doesnt make any sense trying to re-immulate these once classic genres, theyve had theyre time, we need something NEW and fresh, and not the rap/pop shit that weve have today BELEIVE me i also agree.
No ones 'known' these days thats the problem.
I give up. Be an angry person then. I'm just going to listen to this song and love it so intensely it'll overpower your anger. While I'm at it I'm going to send positive thoughts your way. I have a feeling it will have the same effect that sunshine has on a vampire.
Ok, first of all, I strongly disagree but thats ok. We can have differing opinions, but come on dude, if you don't like this song just don't listen to it! If "the only 'talent' now is either underground or old" then only listen to underground or old music! I doubt someone is forcing you to listen to John Smith, in fact, it would be better for everyone involved, inc. yourself if you didn't. There are a lot worse things to be upset about these days, don't waste your anger on an argument like this.
1st comment
dat beard *.*
Oh give me break. im not writing a freaking novel on here?? its just youtube.
Anyway it may not be some sort of 'revivalism' attempt, literally, but it does seem as though people are (as SW MP had mentioned) trying to bring back some of the old ways and styles of music, because of the terrible crap with which we have today currently.
I think the truth is its more to do with the actual music industry itself today and marketing/$ in general. only gearing towards specific audiences etc.
i thought english was always there. i knew vikings invaded them but they were there isn't it .
most common american name of ever
It's a little strange that you are into underground music with that theory.
Are you suggesting that as soon as an artist like John Smith (who has operated on the folk underground for about ten years) takes an opportunity to publicize a new record, that he instantly loses talent and artistic quality? It seems you have decided that, just because you have never heard of someone and you are unwilling to research their catalogue, you are happy to write them off. In which case, an artist as gifted as John isn't for you, and you should consider watching more cat videos.
I'm sorry but this sounds nothing like MC or NM. Your argument is a bit scattered. If you were saying these things on their music videos I would understand but still think that your anger would be put to better use somewhere else. Music like this doesn't do any harm, it may not speak to you but it does to lots of people and I'm sure that songs like this are better for society than "We Can't Stop." Maybe you should put your passionate distaste to use and create the music you're looking for.
Am I the only one here who came because of Doctor Who?
What has America got to do with this video?
Why do you keep implying that im 'angry'? im not ness angry, im just 'tired' of all the bs these days that we have to put up with in the music/entertainment industry and bitching about it etc, and i shouldnt have to be the next 'kurt cobain' to change everything, EVERYONE should be realizing this and doing something about it at this point.
Its not just this song i dont like but the majority these days, was my point. it all sounds the same and has no life or rhythm to it, an only lasts a month or two, and im tired of having to resort to underground or old stuff from the past, everywhere you go these days its stupid fucking "miley cyrus" or "nikki minaj" in window advertisements, websites, commercials, movies etc being shoved in your face, cant escape it.
English name!....gosh, Americans really do think they invented English, eh? gosh!
My argument isnt scattered its just a generalization, im not saying this 'John Smith' is one of those auto-tuned mainstream tweeny pantie wetters obviously, but he's nothing special either, he sounds the same as all the other so called folky-rock/alternative groups these days, If they were that ground-breaking they would at least have more fans and be taking the music industry by the balls right now, like they did in the 90s > prior
I'm sorry but I just don't think we can be friends.
i know i hate country, its all over the charts and i am sick.
Still going on about this? First of all, CALM the fuck down, second, i have no idea what im saying? Whats truly embarrassing is how your completely missing the point in what iv said? im not ness saying that this specific guy is the epidemy of ALL terrible music? Im making a general statement about the 'current' trend of our music in general, and how its not even a matter of opinion anymore, but 'quality', which is literally gone at this point.
The only 'talent' now is either underground or old.
Were we about to become friends?
AND I STAND BY THAT STATEMENT, music fucking sucks these days. period.
Its all the fucking same and they all sound the fucking SAME and only last a month or two at the most. theres literally no character or talent left anymore.
Sir, more heinous than your error-ridden and poorly written spiel is the fact you've missed the point. Completely. This isn't some sort of revivalism; it's just beautiful and honest music. It's not trying to be outré, challenging or mould-braking. Agreed, we need new directions and energy (hold your balls and preconceptions & check out The Dillinger Escape Plan, Nordic Giants, Animals As Leaders, Arcane Roots for starters): just leave this frail, classy beauty alone. It's bloody wonderful.
