As beautiful and as talented and as obviously big-hearted as she is, every time I see Katy, I can’t help but be amazed that Katy is where she is today.
Katy grew up in a very, very religious family. For part of her childhood, Katy’s family would travel from one town to another in order to build churches. When one was done, they’d pick up their lives and move to the next town, ready to build yet another church.
I read that Katy and her siblings were not allowed to eat _Lucky Charms_ cereal because the word “lucky” reminded Katy’s mother of the name Lucifer (just another name for the devil). In that same vein, the Perry kids were even banned from using the term “deviled eggs”...they had to call them “angelic eggs”.
With a start off in life like that, Religious fanaticism takes hold pretty quickly. Religion kills, and if you’re “lucky” (apology to Katy’s mom: sorry about using the “L” word), it kills you quickly, and if you’re _not_ lucky, the “church” will ensure that your death is a long, slow, painful one.
And I’m sure I don’t need to tell _anyone_ here just exactly what the owners of Religion think of LGBTQ folks (but I will): we are walking, talking, breathing abominations who are out to destroy All That Is Holy. Most religious folks grow up with that big, fat lie and have it pounded into their heads day after day after day...until they can no longer distinguish deadly lies from obvious truth. Had Katy continued on that old path, she’d never have taken part in such a life-changing event as she did on Ellen’s show, providing a gay man who had been at death’s door, the chance to follow his dreams, which we _all_ deserve to do.
If all you had to guide you where Katy is concerned was a photo of her, you’d probably think that she looked happy and oh-so-beautiful, but from what I’ve read about and heard about, the road for Katy from there to here has been anything but a cake walk on firm ground. Like most of the rest of us, Katy had/has her share of hurt and disappointment in her life, but to quote Katy’s song _Rise:_
_Oh, ye of so little faith,_
_Don't doubt it_
_Victory is in my veins_
_I know it_
_And I will not negotiate_
_I'll fight it_
_I will transform._
And, in my opinion, if she accomplishes nothing else in her life, Katy has done one of the most important things we humans _can_ do: she reached out her hand to a person in deep need of a new start in life, and she helped him transform.
And there are few things in life more noble than that!
