I believe our ancestors were brain wash into looking to the Christian church for relieve from their predicament, which was also a tool used by the slave master to keep them docile and subservient to their abuse. We (some of us - not all), the offsprings, continue to embrace the only connection we know in recognizing "The Most HIgh God" of all people. The indiginous lands all around the 🌍 earth from Africa, China, Japan, Canada, Australia, India, Oceana countries, Philippines, etc., all have their own cultural ways to recognize the present of a force among them, they call "God." We who were enslaved from Africa were removed from our way of recognizing that force , and was indoctrinated in recognizing the European way of recognizing their force, which is Christianity, and the African way, including our culture were demonized 👿, and was replaced with what we now know as "Christianity." 🇯🇲

Read about the role of the Baptist and Moravian churches in the free villages after slavery ended. Listen to Miss Lou and learn about the slaves and their "negro spiritual" songs. Check your history. The church in St. Thomas was in the heart of our ancestors' struggle for freedom.
Check your history. Who taught the ex-slaves how to read and write? Why is it that so many schools in Jamaica today are associated with churches? The Jamaica National Heritage Foundation has some good information on the free villages that were formed right after slavery. It is worth taking the time to read about them. We have come a long way.
